Hi man, great video :D It's refreshing to see appreciation for modern/contemporary art coming form someone who started in the illustration/animation area of art. The lack of understanding that runs both ways between the two is often exhausting. I hope your video (and ur work) will shed some more light on the fact that all forms of expression come from the same driving force of life within us and that the differences between the works of those arts are just superficial. I think your story is a clear example of how much a person can benefit when he/she makes the effort to wrap his/her mind around a work or form of art they've underestimated before (Duchamp and Mondrian, lol, great examples for that XD). Btw your art certainly stands out much more now then back when it was all about "the impressive display of skill" (nicely put btw). The simplicity and the "clearness" of your current style certainly gives more strength to your artwork (even without the likes I'm sure u could have felt the progress you've made). And being as open-minded as u are, who's to say you won't implement your realistic drawing skill in some new style that u develop later on. It's a long life and eclecticism is a wonderful thing. +Janko Ivcic hey man thank u. You 100% get me. There is too much division between art camps. If only ppl could see that all forms of art art just vehicles to express our common humanity. Learning this with an open mind has helped me improve ten fold as opposed to religiously focusing on one art style or community. And yes I plan to reincorporate realistic elements once I have a grasp of storytelling to keep evolving my style into something more unique. Thank u for the wonderful comment.
Like you said, planning to be the best artist is the path to total burn out. Once you reach a certain skill level there isn't a "best." There is only "different."
I dont think thats true... Its always dependent on your goal, your definition of art and what kind of artist you want to be. If you look at concept art, you can tell why some people get the jobs and others dont. Art can be a profession if you want it to be a profession... "different style" tends to be an excuse for inconsitency and lazyness.
@@tomaswoodall not really, I´m also into abstract art, pop art, impressionism, op art etc. and I´m pretty bad at painting realism. Anyway I think that (succesful) contemporary art turned into something ridiculous... most people copy things that already have been done and can´t take any criticism at all. They try to distract from their incompetence by behaving like a passive agressive baby and stop challenging themselves. Fact is that art changed a lot over the last 100 years and most talented succesful artists are not found in fine art anymore. A great idea, a good concept, or a provocating image is not enough to make it anymore. There are way more competitors than 50-100years ago, peoples mindset changed a lot and you have to dedicate your life to that profession, if you want to make it in any creative field.
Wow, I think you brought across such an important message in this video! I am constantly plagued with worries that my art style is not good enough, and does not look 'professional' enough, simply because it is not realistic. So thank you for making this video, it really means a lot for someone to talk about it! It is genuinely helping to remind me that I should probably stop viewing art as trying to be the best (as I do that far too often!), and instead concentrate on drawing what I love, and how I love to do it! And I'm so glad that you've found an art style that makes you happy, I'm sure your art career will prosper from it!

I don't think many people really got this video. I feel that what he was saying about his change in art style was that it wasn't just about the likes, it was more about him being happy. Just because someone wants to strike a chord with people doesn't mean they're 'only doing it for likes' and as someone who's been complimented on my art, it's just the best feeling to know that what you're doing people enjoy. He changed his style because he felt it was a better way of connecting with himself through his art, and connecting with others too. There's nothing wrong with that. (also sorry if I'm all over the place and don't have the best grammar. I'm twelve, cut me some slack.)

Your comment reads like you're 21, haha. You got a good mind to see that, and you're right about it being whatever it is that makes people happy as the reason for what spurs on their work. The industry of commissioned and specific pipeline work wasn't his passion. I wouldn't blame him - successful and satisfied illustrators aren't a jack of all trades type people with the time to fill as an animator or modeler. Respectively, great and consistent modelers are modelers first, or animators as animators first, etc. Being spread out too thin I think is what he hinted at as well. It's what got me to drop out of college with the same or similar classes he took: It didn't build up my sense of independence, financially related confidence, or personal happiness as an artist to be trained to be a jack of all trades. Expressing himself more easily and freely was, and his interest in being an artist was reinvigorated with a sense of personal passion rekindled.
Oh My Gosh! I have been doing realistic drawings with graphite and charcoal for a while, and people like it a lot. But when I show them my instagram, they always single out the one drawing I don't like the most. I spent little time on that, and it was just right from my imagination, not copied, so not very detailed. They comment it more and say it's their favorite, which I couldn't understand. The reason is because that drawing tells a story, even though it took me less time and is less detailed. You are right, and I'm just realizing it, thank you.
You know what? I think having your own art style is the most necessary thing any artist should have. Without it, you often lack confidence in your art. Even people who draw realistic human portraits have their own style; they use their own strokes, shades and blending techniques even if the result looks the same to another portrait. I used to make digital paintings, however the insane number of steps it took to create a piece frustrated me so much that I switched to cartoon characters. During that time, I developed my own style due to the simplicity of it, and when I felt confident enough, I ended up creating digital paintings of cartoon characters. It was far more simple than painting humans, but still had that professional blending to it that I loved. Your art style can sometimes clash with itself-- there will be certain aspects that you hate and others that you adore. As time passes, try tweaking the elements you hate into something that's more enjoyable for you to create. As you draw, you may even tweak the elements subconsciously, which is why I love my brain so much.
Thanks for the insight Mimzy! Art styles can be a complex thing, but like you said, sometimes it's subconscious and I guess my overall point is that we should focus less on style and focus more on the ideas, expression and the heart of our art. Style will naturally form as a by-product of that :)
I personally strive for my art to be memorable. I want people to remember my art style, and if they see a drawing of mine somewhere they think, "Oh, isnt that made by that one artist?" or something like that. I really doubt that-at least at the moment-my art is memorable. Ive been told that my style is really basic and doesnt have anything that makes it unique. Ive been trying to force little things into my drawings but they never stick with me. this actually demotivates me a lot and it makes me feel really down. As I write this I honestly feel really upset hopefully I eventually find a style that other people like seeing as well
Hey GriffinMM I'm working on some videos that will address a lot of these issues with finding your style. But basically, don't force things into your drawings. Rather, focus on being yourself. Drawing what you like, the things you like, the stories and ideas you have. Look at outside influences and only incorporate them if they make you happy, not to appease other people that tell you your style is 'basic' (even if it is basic, if thats what you like then what's wrong with that?) Just keep working hard, enjoy the process and don't let others expectations change your path.

The thing about the basic style though, that's what makes it not be memorable, and I do want it to be. I feel comfortable with my current style, and I cant say I dont like it, but I want something better that people would remember, and i doubt i'll be able to achieve that if it's plain
Ahh I see what you mean. I could tell you all kinds of things like 'look at other artists', 'experiment' etc. (which are all true) But the most important thing is to remember to have patience. Artistic development takes time. Just don't give up and keep striving to create art that makes you happy.
I love young people, they find themselves, then again find themselves, and slowly find themselves in a pattern of redescoer, no one told them. Great vid, well done, like to see your progress in 10 years your a good storyteller. Don't stop
Stardust Angel I thought the same thing as you. but maybe its because they find it boring like "oh wow, another detailed piece of art I see all the time. And probably can't do..." then they see the simple art and think "wow, I can do that!" or "its so simple but it captures a great picture"
I was going to go and on about my own artistic path and how this video affected my artistic perspectives, but it got pretty long and I don't want to bore you with such stories. Well if you insist, haha. I've been drawing seriously for about two years now and art style was something I used to get hung over since I greatly admired realistic and detailed art and yet preferred exaggerated cartoony styles. Currently I do still respect more realistic art, and do hope to improve in that area, but mainly focus on cartoony art. This kind of bothered me because a lot of my peers preferred detailed and art with high technicality whereas I tended to prefer contemporary art or 'simpler' looking art that effectively communicated big or relatable themes (though I have to admit sometimes modern art can get a bit too crazy for me). My difference in opinion bothers me from time to time so it was really nice to see this video which kind of worked in an opposite way to what most of my peers think. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for those videos and I'll be looking forward to them as well!
Yeah I like more realistic art and I'm still trying to improve in that area. Most people that don't understand art immediately assume high technicality means greater value, but it all depends on context and purpose. Like you said, sometimes simpler art is better at communicating big or relatable themes. To me, I much prefer a simple art piece that succeeds in reaching it's audience vs a complex piece that no one connects with. This should be a topic of a future video :) Anyway don't let the opinions of others drown out your own, good luck and wish you the best.
It's just that generic UA-cam animator art style. • big round head • small eyes • small mouth • eyes and mouth close together I can find at least 5 other channels with that style.
This simple cute and minimalistic style is one of my favourites. I love making simplistic looking sequential art that delivers deep and meaningful messages. The surprising contrast between childish, cute drawings and moving themes/concept is something that really inspires me and I've finally found a style of art I could see myself creating for the rest of my life ^-^
Up until recently, I've tried to master realism, as I thought that is what would make me a great artist. But it never made me happy, so I started doing what I really love doing, and I feel like a kid accomplished artist. I'm glad I stumbled across this, it really made me feel better about doing minimal art.

I actually cried because You basically explained my entire life in this video. And i'm so thankful that you took your time to make it. Chronic competitiveness has actually managed to drain my whole artistic juices and leave me with no desire to pick up a pencil at all. And it's very validating to see other people who have went through the transition and came out of the other side alive.
I really needed this. I've always had a problem comparing myself to other artists and putting myself down because my art isn't really as defined and realistic as the other artists. I try to get better everyday, but I tend to feel like I'm not getting anywhere, especially when it comes to drawing anime. I love anime, and I aspire to become a manga artist and create my very own anime series for my UA-cam channel, but drawing anime can be hard at times because of my struggles of drawing hands, feet, and adding wrinkles and creases in clothes to make it more realistic. I feel like I'll eventually get to that point of my art looking better than what it is now. I want to improve my art style because I'm sick and tired of it being simple, but watching this video made me realize that maybe my art style isn't that bad. I'll still need some improvements here and there, but I do love to draw, and I want to be a better artists. So thank you for making this video and making me realize that everyone has their own style.

for fuck sake ads are how the youtube creators get money and ad block is basically stealing it. UA-cam is not a video platform it is an advertising platform and this is how it makes its money as a buisness. i hate ads just as much as the next guy but UA-cam would crash and burn without them.
Don't complain then if you feel like you're giving them money for the content. I don't pay attention to the ads so it doesn't work either way for me. (Like I would literally mute them and do something slightly more productive with my life in the mean time)
I agree, but I don't think we can ignore realism. It certainly annoys me when morons claim only realism is art (Someone in 9gag once was insisting Hitler was better than Egon Schiele cause his paintings are more realistic *facepalm*) But realism is important when you want to change your style. Schiele could draw realistically, and so could Picasso. We could argue it as "it's just the times" but honestly, I think for one's art to look convincing, even if the style is simple, it is important to understand anatomy and perspective. That being said not all of us should be Shishkin in order to be considered good.
Hellion Shark i agree (notice when I listed "things that make art great" I included realism, it was never about one vs the other, but including all) I still love realism and will continue to do life studies. But breaking out of that to explore storytelling and cartoony styles has opened up a whole new world to me. Next step is to fuse realism and cartoony styles to keep evolving my style. Jaywalker Pictures, I understand what you mean. Realism can be a big trap. I am trying to break out of it myself and it turns out to be a challenge. That and the feeling of "my realism is not good enough cause I ain't Rembrandt." can become quite the problem. But some people just jump on the simplistic thing and say "it's my style" to excuse the lack of skill. Their art looks amateur not because the style is simple, but because there is no understanding of the fundamentals and it shows. Simple styles are beautiful, but they should be a conscious decision, not a necessity. Thank you for replying. :)
Yes of course, it's two extremes - one camp is dogmatic about realism, the other completely ignores the hard work and does what's easy. Neither are correct. Better to have a balance of continuing to improve our understanding of life, but also exploring how different styles can communicate emotion from cartoony to realistic.
+Hellion Shark, okay, but honestly, Hitler being one of the most (if not THE most.) despicable beings to walk the planet, does NOT negate the fact that his paintings were beautiful and full of life and vision. If I could fairly judge art off of the person making it, I would, but my ethics are to fixated for me to be so subjective. Objectively, all art can be fairly and wonderfully judged. By that, I am in no way implying that people who make cartoons are not skilled, I myself draw 80's - 90's style comic art, but I AM saying that you are being unreasonably biased towards an art piece, simply based on the artist. (Just to reemphasize, I hate Hitler and what he did, and if I could kill him over and over again, day in and day out, I totally would. Aggressive? Tell that to the millions he had killed and butchered.)

I agree with this so much, I sometimes write/draw something that I find really meaningful, but people just think ''I can do that too.'' Sure you can, but drawing isn't just lines, it's about imagination and emotions becoming a visual thing, and showing its power and beauty. Someone can draw something very detailed, but they'll not put anything and do it just to do something, but someone will draw something very ''simple'' but will put lots of emotions into it, and the second one is what I would consider art.
I love his style! Realistic drawings are cool, or really detailed cartoony type drawings, but I always feel really inspired by styles like Domics and his. Simple cute styles make me so much more happier than a really detailed drawing

It's important to remember that art is a form of communication, and you have to find your voice. Oh my God, this is the first time that someone told me this. I came here expecting a video just like everyone elses "just do this and that and blah-blah-blah"... but when I watched it, it was more of "You're artstyle is what you enjoy, just do that. It's not about the detail and showing of the complex things that few people can do, it's about you, who you are and what you like. Just do that." (I know you didn't say that word for word, but I snagged that from your video, haha). Thank you, this actually took a shit ton of stress off of me somehow. You earned a sub, but I honestly think you should have more.
This was like, exactly what I needed to hear. Been struggling with my art style lately, because part of me wants to draw the cool things (super detailed, gorgeous artwork with no soul), because that's what people compliment me on, but part of me wants to make simplistic comics just for fun and self expression. I think you just answered my question for me. :3
This was actually what I really needed to hear because I've been lost on the kind of painting/coloring style that I wanted for my art. I really latched onto painting back in my high school art classes because it was fun and progressively started setting standards for what my paintings should look like based on what other artists I saw on the internet said my kind of stuff should be for a professional, which was chock full of enough detail to choke an art school professor or it meant I wasn't good enough. But I'm 22, now, I gave art school a try, I was a deer in headlights but after 3 years and alot of disappointments, stress, and an artist crisis, I dropped out and with family problems and me barely drawing, I wasn't in a good place for art and I didn't know who I wanted to be. I eventually moved in with my best friend and was suddenly in a quiet place and felt motivated enough to draw again and honestly, it's been a year of just trying new things and rebuild myself as an artist and be serious, lol. The only thing I struggled with still was painting style and I then realized after a year that most of my favorite artists were more cartoony, semi-realism and simplistic, painterly but not toooo complicated. But I was still trying to paint like the next DaVinci while not actually enjoying it to the point that it takes me a month to finish anything because of alot of procrastination and general dislike of my process. But I always thought my favorite artists art looked more fun and after looking at your video I randomly found in my UA-cam Recommendations list, I feel I can look myself in the eye and stop feeling scared to break out of my habits of wanting my art to look how I believe other artists think it should look and work in a way that I actually will enjoy coloring from start to finish. Thank you so much for this and I'm sorry I rambled so much and probably took up some of your time!

when I was starting out as an artist (or well, I still am actually but you get what I mean) I also shared the belief that good art=complicated art. I was quickly proven wrong when I noticed how most people loved my simple sketches but ignored the final products. Just lately I noticed that my sketches have way more LIFE in them than the anatomically correct 6-hour full-body full-color drawings. Since I learned to appreciate the simplicity in my art it just flows WAYYYY better. Shout out to all artists who still struggle with this, I feel you and I wish you all the best with figuring out what art style works best for you!!
Really enjoyed this video because its relatable. I think this is common among all teens and young adults growing up. First we compete with each other trying to be the best of the best. Then we get depressed because we realize how empty this makes us feel. But then after this chaos and burnout we have chance to find ourselves and realize that we are already "best at being ourselves" and others are best at being themselves. After this realization we can truly start expressing our own style. Also the whole world around you changes. Every person seems more beautiful and not like another enemy to you. Maybe Im just talking about myself but I think this is happy philosophy to live by. I myself cant draw that much, but I like how simple and humane your drawing style is.

I have no idea what my art style is. I want to go into graphic design and I'm trying to practice my drawing skills to be flexible in my drawing style, but it's hard to know what to work on when you're all over the place. Thanks for the vid it cleared my head a little.
Art is a constant search, keep working hard and try to look honestly into your heart what you enjoy and like. Don't choose a style based on whats popular but choose it based on what kind of stories, ideas and feelings u want to communicate. Good luck :)
Why not both though? A simple art style is not intrinsic to what you currently do. Why not draw things with more emotional and human qualities using greater technical competency?

De za, I can't agree with you more. I am not even close to where I want to be as an artist, however when I do something and someone tells me I have "talent" it drives me up the wall. It's like tossing out the hundreds of hours I spent repeating, and repeating, and questioning myself out the window.
This video is extremely refreshing to me as a lyricist to witness how artists of all fields alike are struck with the same dilemma of self doubt... I learn to embrace my style no matter how others will perceive it and if I like what I produce along with a few others that's all that matters at the end of the day + it really is about living a purpose filled life to produce purposeful substance (by what means of purpose/significance is the artist's choice to decide) don't be self compromising, but really go full pursuit in what you're inclined to do and capture your full essence
Thank you Javon. I totally agree. It's amazing but in all art forms, one can't fully create until they know exactly who they are and aren't afraid to 100% express it. Anything before that point is just practice or pretend.

I have always been so obsessed with other people’s art and how it looks, and I tried to imitate it, and when my drawings did not meet this ideal standard I set for myself, I would just give up. I have two art styles for some of the same reasons you changed yours. I absolutely LOVE my old art, but I super love my new style as well because it's more simplistic.
Whenever i feel terrible about my art, I always come back to this video of yours. I couldn't count anymore how many times i have visited. This truly inspires me, and always give me the strength to continue the path i had started.
I went through the same type of thing Just a few weeks ago. I was struggling to create pixel art animations (because i need them for game development) and I kept comparing myself to others (specifically shovel knight) and one day it was snowing and i saw this one girl turn and look at me and when I got home i made an animation out of it and it was such a random event that basically inspired me to just make what I want and it was amazing
As an artist, this is what I have always struggled with, but could never explain. Your video brought a lot of clarity to what I've been missing in much of my art, and I want to thank you for that.
Hey, I love the realistic high fantasy stuff. But I agree, the demographic for it is small. I struggled with that in college as well. I went to design school a lot like yours learning everything from graphic, to web, to after effects. Unfortunately the 3D animation is something I have to learn on my own. I made a Warcraft animation that featured Medivh transforming between his human form and the demon form. I was so iffy about the animation because not a lot of people know about it. So I tried to tackle it in a more simple geometric style that wouldn't appear to be "warcrafty" and more something people would pick up. I love the realistic style and I am still working to improve that, as it is important to me, but telling real life stories that connect with real people does get the winning hand. I want to find a way to connect both, I think it would be interesting. Loved your video.
Hey Alexa, I think the high fantasy stuff still has a huge demographic (e.g. warcraft, LOTR, Harry Potter etc has a massive following) but I think as we mature our appreciation for real life stories grows. I still love both and yes a way to connect the two would be incredible. I think a good example is game of thrones - it combines the spectacle of high fantasy with strong character driven stories about real life themes, which is why it was so popular. I completely agree! Game of Thrones is an excellent example. You're right, it's a big demographic, but I guess not where I went to school. Harry Potter is a great example too, because it had a lot of real life struggles. I didn't think there was a soul who didn't know what Harry Potter was until college. I love magic and armor too much, I don't think I'll give it up when I'm old. Have a great day!

If I may critique... it looks like your past work was very generic, and that's likely why you weren't getting notes. What happened was your deterrent from realism helped you focus on the *content* rather than the *execution*. Concerned with "what" you were drawing, and not "how". Drawing more simplistic is easier to read and can be just as effective. Just ask Pixar. Though it didn't mean you had to abandon your skills in realism. However if it's more enjoyable for you, keep your newborn style!
Dude thank you, I completely agree. At the end of the day I enjoy all styles, realistic and cute, but like you touched on, doing the 'simple' stuff is a form of training. It's been forcing me to focus on story, concept without the crutch rendering. You are probably the first person that has noticed this, so thank you for the great comment.

I'm glad I came across this video, since I'm always self-conscious about my art style not being "good enough" because it's not realistic (my profile pic is of a digital drawing that I made, by the way). I feel pretty comfortable about it now, but I do think that there's a *lot* of room for improvement. (As a side note, I've been drawing in that style since I was 12 and I'm 13 now, so it's only been a year. I found the style by looking at other people's drawings and taking out parts that I like.)

Anyone can be an artist. We all start out being able to draw the same, some of us simply have more practice than others. Someone once said that the talented person is just the person motivated to keep trying. Set standards for yourself. When you're done with something, don't just look for things you did right or wrong, think about ways you can use them or improve on them in the future. Most importantly, never stop. If you have a passion for making art, keep trying! Even if you hate everything about what you make, if you can learn to recognize the "why" it needs improvement, you can fix it with practice.
most people who see picassos later work think hes a hack until they see his earlier work which was technically "perfect" in terms of realism proportion perspective, etc. what most people dont understand, is that creation and originality is difficult.....if youve got some drawing talent then anyone can be technically perfect. but not everyone can be innovative or creative
This inspired me a lot, persuaded me to start drawing again.. Thank you so much, man. You've made my career and style a whole lot more fun and better, in a lot of ways. I used to draw really detailed pictures, but much like you, they didn't get much love. Then I started drawing straight from my head, and just going from my mind onto a piece of paper. It was more fun, more engaging. It made me think of what was actually going on, what was good, what wasn't. Thank you, once again.

I can draw somewhat well. It's mostly doodling and I I draw stuff from my mind, but the only problem is that I'm not able to add any detail. I might draw a simple dragon form with some muscle lines and some simple shading, but it always seem so empty. I try drawing some robot car thing and all I can get to is to just some simple blocks and buttons. I'm not sure what to do.

Alpha Ceph well I just can't think of any detail to put into any doodles or drawings. I have this picture in my mind with lots of detail and color, but at the same time its really blurry and all I can see is the basic shape.
Practice - with references. This is the best solution to your problem (being able to draw with detail) but keep in mind that if you want to 'get good' that quite a lot of work will need to be put in. There is a difference between having an idea of what you are drawing and knowing what you are drawing. For example, if you want to draw trees realistically, then you should go outside and draw some trees or take a picture of a tree and draw it. The more times you do this, the better you will get each time and after at least 10 drawings, you should be able to draw it from you mind decently - the more times you draw from reference, the more different perspectives you draw from reference, the better you can do it from your mind. For creatures like dragons where they don't exactly 'exist' you can use other people's art as a reference (for practice only), or you can use the animals that other artists use as a reference, as a reference. For simplified art such as semi-realism, which is something I am currently working on, you must master the realism first and then through school (techniques) or trial and error you can find what works best when simplifying realism. You don't 'need' to go to school to get good at art, but it can speed up some of the learning process. School will teach you techniques that can save you time. There is a lot more that could be said, but I hope this helps some.
Justin is right, I used to have the same problem, still do to a degree. I used to operate under the assumption of "if I'm making something up, I should be able to make ALL of it up." But I found that when it came to details, a lot of my work was lacking, because I didn't have any experience to pull from. You can painstakingly beat your head against this dilemma and you'll slowly gain more experience in making up these things(I did this for a long time), or you can make improvements by leaps and bounds by looking for a reference any time you feel yourself get stuck. The most common type of imagination is the cobbling together of multiple pre-existing ideas in new ways. That's very applicable to drawing, if you have no pieces for inspiration, you'll find it difficult to put together your puzzle.

Naturally I chose a cute style that would match the emotion of the scene - if I just wanted likes I would draw Disney princesses or other popular fan art...
Mahi Sometimes you end up somewhere else you don't expect, and that's okay. You don't always have to follow your biggest dreams, if you're content with what you have then, in some sense, you can still get far in life.

Thing is I don't want to even be amazing at drawing, I don't care for it all that much. However, my passion is with 3D modeling and in order to create amazing things, I need a reference. So I'm trying to learn how to draw so I can first get my idea down on paper which will make it alot easier when transferring it in to 3D
When I said I don't care for it, that's not exactly true. When I see other people's amazing drawing I'm blown away and I would love to be able to draw like that. I just don't really see myself getting better. I can't even create simple drawing and I'v been doing it for months.
Focus less on making a piece that will blow people away and more on improving your understanding of objects proportion and space. That's what u need for 3D modelling. Do what ur excited to do and if that requires drawing, then do that too. Whatever it takes to make your passion and vision into reality :)
Damn accurate, I'v done the whole 'but muh realism' for a few years only to come back to a simplistic comic like style. Sure its simple, unimpressive and I do have that whole 'shit I'm over 30 and I draw childlike' insecurity but at least I enjoy it.
Making art with the enthusiasm and spontaneity of a child is the art I like the most, in any medium. Even photography, which requires precision, I have found that an automatic camera is the best way to make a good photograph. And yes, I also feel insecure sometimes because my work requires not that much effort compared to others that use very bulky cameras and think alot about what their next move will be but I feel this is my true voice. I'm a happy-go-lucky kinda person so why shouldn't I represent that in my art :) fyi, I'm 25 and fighting really hard to finish my bachelor's degree. My teachers feel that my personality "lacks respect and is easily satisfied".

What if I draw depending on my emotion?.. Like sometimes it can be a black and white old fashion comic style, and my most frequently used, charcoal realistic... Sometimes its neither, its super cartoony... Is that bad?
Of course not! Not everyone has just one style. Some people never have the same one twice, but it's never a bad thing. It just means their art is more flexible!
That's great! One of the reasons we create art is to express ourselves and our emotions, so you are on the right track. Keep creating and expressing yourself!

It's refreshing to see appreciation for modern/contemporary art coming form someone who started in the illustration/animation area of art. The lack of understanding that runs both ways between the two is often exhausting. I hope your video (and ur work) will shed some more light on the fact that all forms of expression come from the same driving force of life within us and that the differences between the works of those arts are just superficial.
I think your story is a clear example of how much a person can benefit when he/she makes the effort to wrap his/her mind around a work or form of art they've underestimated before (Duchamp and Mondrian, lol, great examples for that XD).
Btw your art certainly stands out much more now then back when it was all about "the impressive display of skill" (nicely put btw). The simplicity and the "clearness" of your current style certainly gives more strength to your artwork (even without the likes I'm sure u could have felt the progress you've made). And being as open-minded as u are, who's to say you won't implement your realistic drawing skill in some new style that u develop later on. It's a long life and eclecticism is a wonderful thing.

+Janko Ivcic hey man thank u. You 100% get me. There is too much division between art camps. If only ppl could see that all forms of art art just vehicles to express our common humanity. Learning this with an open mind has helped me improve ten fold as opposed to religiously focusing on one art style or community.

If you look at concept art, you can tell why some people get the jobs and others dont. Art can be a profession if you want it to be a profession... "different style" tends to be an excuse for inconsitency and lazyness.

@@tomaswoodall not really, I´m also into abstract art, pop art, impressionism, op art etc. and I´m pretty bad at painting realism. Anyway I think that (succesful) contemporary art turned into something ridiculous... most people copy things that already have been done and can´t take any criticism at all. They try to distract from their incompetence by behaving like a passive agressive baby and stop challenging themselves. Fact is that art changed a lot over the last 100 years and most talented succesful artists are not found in fine art anymore. A great idea, a good concept, or a provocating image is not enough to make it anymore. There are way more competitors than 50-100years ago, peoples mindset changed a lot and you have to dedicate your life to that profession, if you want to make it in any creative field.

I am constantly plagued with worries that my art style is not good enough, and does not look 'professional' enough, simply because it is not realistic. So thank you for making this video, it really means a lot for someone to talk about it! It is genuinely helping to remind me that I should probably stop viewing art as trying to be the best (as I do that far too often!), and instead concentrate on drawing what I love, and how I love to do it! I don't think many people really got this video. I feel that what he was saying about his change in art style was that it wasn't just about the likes, it was more about him being happy. Just because someone wants to strike a chord with people doesn't mean they're 'only doing it for likes' and as someone who's been complimented on my art, it's just the best feeling to know that what you're doing people enjoy. He changed his style because he felt it was a better way of connecting with himself through his art, and connecting with others too. There's nothing wrong with that. (also sorry if I'm all over the place and don't have the best grammar. I'm twelve, cut me some slack.)

Your comment reads like you're 21, haha. You got a good mind to see that, and you're right about it being whatever it is that makes people happy as the reason for what spurs on their work.
The industry of commissioned and specific pipeline work wasn't his passion. I wouldn't blame him - successful and satisfied illustrators aren't a jack of all trades type people with the time to fill as an animator or modeler. Respectively, great and consistent modelers are modelers first, or animators as animators first, etc.
Being spread out too thin I think is what he hinted at as well. It's what got me to drop out of college with the same or similar classes he took: It didn't build up my sense of independence, financially related confidence, or personal happiness as an artist to be trained to be a jack of all trades.
Expressing himself more easily and freely was, and his interest in being an artist was reinvigorated with a sense of personal passion rekindled.

Oh My Gosh! I have been doing realistic drawings with graphite and charcoal for a while, and people like it a lot. But when I show them my instagram, they always single out the one drawing I don't like the most. I spent little time on that, and it was just right from my imagination, not copied, so not very detailed. They comment it more and say it's their favorite, which I couldn't understand. The reason is because that drawing tells a story, even though it took me less time and is less detailed. You are right, and I'm just realizing it, thank you.

You know what? I think having your own art style is the most necessary thing any artist should have. Without it, you often lack confidence in your art. Even people who draw realistic human portraits have their own style; they use their own strokes, shades and blending techniques even if the result looks the same to another portrait.
I used to make digital paintings, however the insane number of steps it took to create a piece frustrated me so much that I switched to cartoon characters. During that time, I developed my own style due to the simplicity of it, and when I felt confident enough, I ended up creating digital paintings of cartoon characters. It was far more simple than painting humans, but still had that professional blending to it that I loved.
Your art style can sometimes clash with itself-- there will be certain aspects that you hate and others that you adore. As time passes, try tweaking the elements you hate into something that's more enjoyable for you to create. As you draw, you may even tweak the elements subconsciously, which is why I love my brain so much.
Thanks for the insight Mimzy! Art styles can be a complex thing, but like you said, sometimes it's subconscious and I guess my overall point is that we should focus less on style and focus more on the ideas, expression and the heart of our art. Style will naturally form as a by-product of that :)
I think another important this is that, with your own art style, it's much easier to put emotion or feeling or atmosphere in it.

I personally strive for my art to be memorable. I want people to remember my art style, and if they see a drawing of mine somewhere they think, "Oh, isnt that made by that one artist?" or something like that.
I really doubt that-at least at the moment-my art is memorable. Ive been told that my style is really basic and doesnt have anything that makes it unique. Ive been trying to force little things into my drawings but they never stick with me. this actually demotivates me a lot and it makes me feel really down. As I write this I honestly feel really upset
hopefully I eventually find a style that other people like seeing as well
Hey GriffinMM I'm working on some videos that will address a lot of these issues with finding your style. But basically, don't force things into your drawings. Rather, focus on being yourself. Drawing what you like, the things you like, the stories and ideas you have. Look at outside influences and only incorporate them if they make you happy, not to appease other people that tell you your style is 'basic' (even if it is basic, if thats what you like then what's wrong with that?) Just keep working hard, enjoy the process and don't let others expectations change your path.

I feel comfortable with my current style, and I cant say I dont like it, but I want something better that people would remember, and i doubt i'll be able to achieve that if it's plain
Ahh I see what you mean. I could tell you all kinds of things like 'look at other artists', 'experiment' etc. (which are all true) But the most important thing is to remember to have patience. Artistic development takes time. Just don't give up and keep striving to create art that makes you happy.

I was going to go and on about my own artistic path and how this video affected my artistic perspectives, but it got pretty long and I don't want to bore you with such stories. Well if you insist, haha. I've been drawing seriously for about two years now and art style was something I used to get hung over since I greatly admired realistic and detailed art and yet preferred exaggerated cartoony styles. Currently I do still respect more realistic art, and do hope to improve in that area, but mainly focus on cartoony art. This kind of bothered me because a lot of my peers preferred detailed and art with high technicality whereas I tended to prefer contemporary art or 'simpler' looking art that effectively communicated big or relatable themes (though I have to admit sometimes modern art can get a bit too crazy for me). My difference in opinion bothers me from time to time so it was really nice to see this video which kind of worked in an opposite way to what most of my peers think.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for those videos and I'll be looking forward to them as well!
Yeah I like more realistic art and I'm still trying to improve in that area. Most people that don't understand art immediately assume high technicality means greater value, but it all depends on context and purpose. Like you said, sometimes simpler art is better at communicating big or relatable themes. To me, I much prefer a simple art piece that succeeds in reaching it's audience vs a complex piece that no one connects with. This should be a topic of a future video :) Anyway don't let the opinions of others drown out your own, good luck and wish you the best.

This simple cute and minimalistic style is one of my favourites. I love making simplistic looking sequential art that delivers deep and meaningful messages. The surprising contrast between childish, cute drawings and moving themes/concept is something that really inspires me and I've finally found a style of art I could see myself creating for the rest of my life ^-^
Up until recently, I've tried to master realism, as I thought that is what would make me a great artist. But it never made me happy, so I started doing what I really love doing, and I feel like a kid accomplished artist. I'm glad I stumbled across this, it really made me feel better about doing minimal art.

I actually cried because You basically explained my entire life in this video. And i'm so thankful that you took your time to make it. Chronic competitiveness has actually managed to drain my whole artistic juices and leave me with no desire to pick up a pencil at all. And it's very validating to see other people who have went through the transition and came out of the other side alive.

I really needed this. I've always had a problem comparing myself to other artists and putting myself down because my art isn't really as defined and realistic as the other artists. I try to get better everyday, but I tend to feel like I'm not getting anywhere, especially when it comes to drawing anime. I love anime, and I aspire to become a manga artist and create my very own anime series for my UA-cam channel, but drawing anime can be hard at times because of my struggles of drawing hands, feet, and adding wrinkles and creases in clothes to make it more realistic. I feel like I'll eventually get to that point of my art looking better than what it is now. I want to improve my art style because I'm sick and tired of it being simple, but watching this video made me realize that maybe my art style isn't that bad. I'll still need some improvements here and there, but I do love to draw, and I want to be a better artists. So thank you for making this video and making me realize that everyone has their own style.

for fuck sake ads are how the youtube creators get money and ad block is basically stealing it. UA-cam is not a video platform it is an advertising platform and this is how it makes its money as a buisness. i hate ads just as much as the next guy but UA-cam would crash and burn without them.
Don't complain then if you feel like you're giving them money for the content. I don't pay attention to the ads so it doesn't work either way for me. (Like I would literally mute them and do something slightly more productive with my life in the mean time)
I agree, but I don't think we can ignore realism. It certainly annoys me when morons claim only realism is art (Someone in 9gag once was insisting Hitler was better than Egon Schiele cause his paintings are more realistic *facepalm*) But realism is important when you want to change your style. Schiele could draw realistically, and so could Picasso. We could argue it as "it's just the times" but honestly, I think for one's art to look convincing, even if the style is simple, it is important to understand anatomy and perspective. That being said not all of us should be Shishkin in order to be considered good.
Hellion Shark i agree (notice when I listed "things that make art great" I included realism, it was never about one vs the other, but including all) I still love realism and will continue to do life studies. But breaking out of that to explore storytelling and cartoony styles has opened up a whole new world to me. Next step is to fuse realism and cartoony styles to keep evolving my style. Jaywalker Pictures, I understand what you mean. Realism can be a big trap. I am trying to break out of it myself and it turns out to be a challenge. That and the feeling of "my realism is not good enough cause I ain't Rembrandt." can become quite the problem. But some people just jump on the simplistic thing and say "it's my style" to excuse the lack of skill. Their art looks amateur not because the style is simple, but because there is no understanding of the fundamentals and it shows. Simple styles are beautiful, but they should be a conscious decision, not a necessity.

Yes of course, it's two extremes - one camp is dogmatic about realism, the other completely ignores the hard work and does what's easy. Neither are correct. Better to have a balance of continuing to improve our understanding of life, but also exploring how different styles can communicate emotion from cartoony to realistic.
+Hellion Shark, okay, but honestly, Hitler being one of the most (if not THE most.) despicable beings to walk the planet, does NOT negate the fact that his paintings were beautiful and full of life and vision. If I could fairly judge art off of the person making it, I would, but my ethics are to fixated for me to be so subjective. Objectively, all art can be fairly and wonderfully judged. By that, I am in no way implying that people who make cartoons are not skilled, I myself draw 80's - 90's style comic art, but I AM saying that you are being unreasonably biased towards an art piece, simply based on the artist. (Just to reemphasize, I hate Hitler and what he did, and if I could kill him over and over again, day in and day out, I totally would. Aggressive? Tell that to the millions he had killed and butchered.)

I agree with this so much, I sometimes write/draw something that I find really meaningful, but people just think ''I can do that too.'' Sure you can, but drawing isn't just lines, it's about imagination and emotions becoming a visual thing, and showing its power and beauty. Someone can draw something very detailed, but they'll not put anything and do it just to do something, but someone will draw something very ''simple'' but will put lots of emotions into it, and the second one is what I would consider art.

I love his style! Realistic drawings are cool, or really detailed cartoony type drawings, but I always feel really inspired by styles like Domics and his. Simple cute styles make me so much more happier than a really detailed drawing

Been struggling with my art style lately, because part of me wants to draw the cool things (super detailed, gorgeous artwork with no soul), because that's what people compliment me on, but part of me wants to make simplistic comics just for fun and self expression. This was actually what I really needed to hear because I've been lost on the kind of painting/coloring style that I wanted for my art. I really latched onto painting back in my high school art classes because it was fun and progressively started setting standards for what my paintings should look like based on what other artists I saw on the internet said my kind of stuff should be for a professional, which was chock full of enough detail to choke an art school professor or it meant I wasn't good enough. But I'm 22, now, I gave art school a try, I was a deer in headlights but after 3 years and alot of disappointments, stress, and an artist crisis, I dropped out and with family problems and me barely drawing, I wasn't in a good place for art and I didn't know who I wanted to be. I eventually moved in with my best friend and was suddenly in a quiet place and felt motivated enough to draw again and honestly, it's been a year of just trying new things and rebuild myself as an artist and be serious, lol. The only thing I struggled with still was painting style and I then realized after a year that most of my favorite artists were more cartoony, semi-realism and simplistic, painterly but not toooo complicated. But I was still trying to paint like the next DaVinci while not actually enjoying it to the point that it takes me a month to finish anything because of alot of procrastination and general dislike of my process. But I always thought my favorite artists art looked more fun and after looking at your video I randomly found in my UA-cam Recommendations list, I feel I can look myself in the eye and stop feeling scared to break out of my habits of wanting my art to look how I believe other artists think it should look and work in a way that I actually will enjoy coloring from start to finish.

when I was starting out as an artist (or well, I still am actually but you get what I mean) I also shared the belief that good art=complicated art. I was quickly proven wrong when I noticed how most people loved my simple sketches but ignored the final products. Just lately I noticed that my sketches have way more LIFE in them than the anatomically correct 6-hour full-body full-color drawings. Since I learned to appreciate the simplicity in my art it just flows WAYYYY better. Shout out to all artists who still struggle with this, I feel you and I wish you all the best with figuring out what art style works best for you!!

Really enjoyed this video because its relatable. I think this is common among all teens and young adults growing up. First we compete with each other trying to be the best of the best. Then we get depressed because we realize how empty this makes us feel. But then after this chaos and burnout we have chance to find ourselves and realize that we are already "best at being ourselves" and others are best at being themselves. After this realization we can truly start expressing our own style. Also the whole world around you changes. Every person seems more beautiful and not like another enemy to you. Maybe Im just talking about myself but I think this is happy philosophy to live by. I myself cant draw that much, but I like how simple and humane your drawing style is.

I have no idea what my art style is. I want to go into graphic design and I'm trying to practice my drawing skills to be flexible in my drawing style, but it's hard to know what to work on when you're all over the place. Thanks for the vid it cleared my head a little.
Art is a constant search, keep working hard and try to look honestly into your heart what you enjoy and like. Don't choose a style based on whats popular but choose it based on what kind of stories, ideas and feelings u want to communicate. Good luck :)

This video is extremely refreshing to me as a lyricist to witness how artists of all fields alike are struck with the same dilemma of self doubt... I learn to embrace my style no matter how others will perceive it and if I like what I produce along with a few others that's all that matters at the end of the day + it really is about living a purpose filled life to produce purposeful substance (by what means of purpose/significance is the artist's choice to decide) don't be self compromising, but really go full pursuit in what you're inclined to do and capture your full essence

I went through the same type of thing Just a few weeks ago. I was struggling to create pixel art animations (because i need them for game development) and I kept comparing myself to others (specifically shovel knight) and one day it was snowing and i saw this one girl turn and look at me and when I got home i made an animation out of it and it was such a random event that basically inspired me to just make what I want and it was amazing

Hey, I love the realistic high fantasy stuff. But I agree, the demographic for it is small. I struggled with that in college as well. I went to design school a lot like yours learning everything from graphic, to web, to after effects. Unfortunately the 3D animation is something I have to learn on my own. I made a Warcraft animation that featured Medivh transforming between his human form and the demon form. I was so iffy about the animation because not a lot of people know about it. So I tried to tackle it in a more simple geometric style that wouldn't appear to be "warcrafty" and more something people would pick up. I love the realistic style and I am still working to improve that, as it is important to me, but telling real life stories that connect with real people does get the winning hand. I want to find a way to connect both, I think it would be interesting. Loved your video.
Hey Alexa, I think the high fantasy stuff still has a huge demographic (e.g. warcraft, LOTR, Harry Potter etc has a massive following) but I think as we mature our appreciation for real life stories grows. I still love both and yes a way to connect the two would be incredible. I think a good example is game of thrones - it combines the spectacle of high fantasy with strong character driven stories about real life themes, which is why it was so popular. I completely agree! Game of Thrones is an excellent example. You're right, it's a big demographic, but I guess not where I went to school. Harry Potter is a great example too, because it had a lot of real life struggles. I didn't think there was a soul who didn't know what Harry Potter was until college. I love magic and armor too much, I don't think I'll give it up when I'm old. Have a great day!

If I may critique... it looks like your past work was very generic, and that's likely why you weren't getting notes.
What happened was your deterrent from realism helped you focus on the *content* rather than the *execution*. Concerned with "what" you were drawing, and not "how".
Drawing more simplistic is easier to read and can be just as effective. Just ask Pixar.
Though it didn't mean you had to abandon your skills in realism. However if it's more enjoyable for you, keep your newborn style!
Dude thank you, I completely agree. At the end of the day I enjoy all styles, realistic and cute, but like you touched on, doing the 'simple' stuff is a form of training. It's been forcing me to focus on story, concept without the crutch rendering. You are probably the first person that has noticed this, so thank you for the great comment.

I'm glad I came across this video, since I'm always self-conscious about my art style not being "good enough" because it's not realistic (my profile pic is of a digital drawing that I made, by the way).
I feel pretty comfortable about it now, but I do think that there's a *lot* of room for improvement.
(As a side note, I've been drawing in that style since I was 12 and I'm 13 now, so it's only been a year. I found the style by looking at other people's drawings and taking out parts that I like.)

Anyone can be an artist. We all start out being able to draw the same, some of us simply have more practice than others. Someone once said that the talented person is just the person motivated to keep trying.
Set standards for yourself. When you're done with something, don't just look for things you did right or wrong, think about ways you can use them or improve on them in the future.
Most importantly, never stop. If you have a passion for making art, keep trying! Even if you hate everything about what you make, if you can learn to recognize the "why" it needs improvement, you can fix it with practice.

most people who see picassos later work think hes a hack until they see his earlier work which was technically "perfect" in terms of realism proportion perspective, etc. what most people dont understand, is that creation and originality is difficult.....if youve got some drawing talent then anyone can be technically perfect. but not everyone can be innovative or creative

I can draw somewhat well. It's mostly doodling and I I draw stuff from my mind, but the only problem is that I'm not able to add any detail. I might draw a simple dragon form with some muscle lines and some simple shading, but it always seem so empty. I try drawing some robot car thing and all I can get to is to just some simple blocks and buttons. I'm not sure what to do.

Alpha Ceph well I just can't think of any detail to put into any doodles or drawings. I have this picture in my mind with lots of detail and color, but at the same time its really blurry and all I can see is the basic shape.
Practice - with references. This is the best solution to your problem (being able to draw with detail) but keep in mind that if you want to 'get good' that quite a lot of work will need to be put in. There is a difference between having an idea of what you are drawing and knowing what you are drawing. For example, if you want to draw trees realistically, then you should go outside and draw some trees or take a picture of a tree and draw it. The more times you do this, the better you will get each time and after at least 10 drawings, you should be able to draw it from you mind decently - the more times you draw from reference, the more different perspectives you draw from reference, the better you can do it from your mind. For creatures like dragons where they don't exactly 'exist' you can use other people's art as a reference (for practice only), or you can use the animals that other artists use as a reference, as a reference.
For simplified art such as semi-realism, which is something I am currently working on, you must master the realism first and then through school (techniques) or trial and error you can find what works best when simplifying realism.
You don't 'need' to go to school to get good at art, but it can speed up some of the learning process. School will teach you techniques that can save you time.
There is a lot more that could be said, but I hope this helps some.

Justin is right, I used to have the same problem, still do to a degree. I used to operate under the assumption of "if I'm making something up, I should be able to make ALL of it up."
But I found that when it came to details, a lot of my work was lacking, because I didn't have any experience to pull from. You can painstakingly beat your head against this dilemma and you'll slowly gain more experience in making up these things(I did this for a long time), or you can make improvements by leaps and bounds by looking for a reference any time you feel yourself get stuck.
The most common type of imagination is the cobbling together of multiple pre-existing ideas in new ways. That's very applicable to drawing, if you have no pieces for inspiration, you'll find it difficult to put together your puzzle.

So you choosed being internet popular instead being a proffesional artist working on a real videogame, concept art, movie, short, etc? I know it's hard, but the biggest thing are. Also some of the best games have the simple style, it's dosen't it's easy

I chose to draw art I enjoy doing, that allows me to express my feelings, ideas and stories. I wasn't popular then and I'm not popular now :)
in that case that's pretty good, i was afraid to see another artiste choosing an "simple art" just for likes
+Mahi yeah I didn't know it would be popular. in the video I said I was inspired by a movie I watched and I wanted to be express that cute scene in my art. Naturally I chose a cute style that would match the emotion of the scene - if I just wanted likes I would draw Disney princesses or other popular fan art...
Mahi Sometimes you end up somewhere else you don't expect, and that's okay. You don't always have to follow your biggest dreams, if you're content with what you have then, in some sense, you can still get far in life.

Thing is I don't want to even be amazing at drawing, I don't care for it all that much. However, my passion is with 3D modeling and in order to create amazing things, I need a reference. So I'm trying to learn how to draw so I can first get my idea down on paper which will make it alot easier when transferring it in to 3D
When I said I don't care for it, that's not exactly true. When I see other people's amazing drawing I'm blown away and I would love to be able to draw like that. I just don't really see myself getting better. I can't even create simple drawing and I'v been doing it for months.
Focus less on making a piece that will blow people away and more on improving your understanding of objects proportion and space. That's what u need for 3D modelling. Do what ur excited to do and if that requires drawing, then do that too. Whatever it takes to make your passion and vision into reality :)

Damn accurate, I'v done the whole 'but muh realism' for a few years only to come back to a simplistic comic like style. Sure its simple, unimpressive and I do have that whole 'shit I'm over 30 and I draw childlike' insecurity but at least I enjoy it.
Making art with the enthusiasm and spontaneity of a child is the art I like the most, in any medium. Even photography, which requires precision, I have found that an automatic camera is the best way to make a good photograph. And yes, I also feel insecure sometimes because my work requires not that much effort compared to others that use very bulky cameras and think alot about what their next move will be but I feel this is my true voice. I'm a happy-go-lucky kinda person so why shouldn't I represent that in my art :)
fyi, I'm 25 and fighting really hard to finish my bachelor's degree. My teachers feel that my personality "lacks respect and is easily satisfied".

You've inspired me. Lately, after I graduated college a year and a half ao, I feel like I've been in the same boat as you were. Struggling with my art, uninspired to continue. Lost. You give me hope. What if I draw depending on my emotion?.. Like sometimes it can be a black and white old fashion comic style, and my most frequently used, charcoal realistic... Sometimes its neither, its super cartoony... Is that bad?
Of course not! Not everyone has just one style. Some people never have the same one twice, but it's never a bad thing. It just means their art is more flexible!

That's great! One of the reasons we create art is to express ourselves and our emotions, so you are on the right track. Keep creating and expressing yourself!
