- Hey guys! Talking about art style has been a popular request, so I thought I'd finally made a video about it. It was a little tough to explain but I hope I did a good job~

which dumb "professional artists" tell people not to copy. copying is how you learn to draw , jeez
That Anime Guy my uncle XD
You can definitely start learning by copying, but maybe not tracing so much. Learn to draw by copying the way LavenderTowne does in the video. Unless you're tracing circles. Circles are hard
BoomSnag Well your work should of course not be copyied , but much of how you learn is of course copying
Well, as a dumb wanna be pro, I have concerns when it comes to copying. What happens if the artist you are copying is making mistakes? You will learn, yes, but there isn't a guarantee you'll learn something correct. If you are hobbyist you probably have nothing to worry about, but anyone more serious needs to start working on "realistic" things, learn the rules before you break them.
Copying is a great way to _start_ drawing and build confidence, or at least that's how it was for me. Then you start to draw from life, looking at pictures of real people and such.

that moment when you draw everything perfect the body, face, eyes and etc. and you can't draw hands.....

beautiful just beautiful 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
5 stars. Top quote
agree.
Yes
yeah probably
I have a couple different styles, but anyway I have some tips.
1. DO NOT
Let ANYONE tell you your style is bad. Its YOUR Opinion.
2. Let yourself be free.
Draw whatever, whenever.
3. Doodle. What does it seem you like drawing most? Draw that a lot.
4. Have as many styles as you want!!
5. If you see something wrong with a piece you've worked hard on, oh well. Its something for you to cherish. Its beautiful.
6. SPEND TIME ON IT
Draw frequently.
I have a problem - I'm decently good at drawing, but only when I'm doing fanart. I have a tendency to copy styles almost _exactly._ If you put my fanart for say Rick and Morty alongside my fanart for Death Note you wouldn't believe they were done by the same artist.
So how do I develop my style? I've tried and failed to mash things up. It looks bad and when I try to fix it it becomes one of the things I'm trying to mix up in the first place >_
What is a good type of way you like to draw that pleases you? Anime, chibi, simple, or basically pick a style you like and is easiest when doing fanart.
For example, anime. If you like that, you should use it. If there is any thing that you would like to add and take away, go ahead.
One of my styles are anime.
But I changed up the eyes a bit and mouth and also the hair.
Also, you could have many styles.
A tip on drawing is sketching out the body and the bone structure and basically whole body.
don't erase sketches until you're done.
tutorial throughout drawing USE PENCIL**:
1. Sketch body of the character. Make it in the pose you want. note that you can make this how messy you want, it doesn't matter/
2. Add hair, but make sure its not just scribble hair. You know what I mean. I do thick locks, not every strand separate from another..but if you want to do that, go ahead.
3. Add the face in the position, and, emotion you want
4. face is pretty much done, just add shading if you want or blush.
5. clothes...if you want to, put shading and wrinkles in clothes.
6. outline all details in outliner or sharpies, or pens, just something permanent
7. erase sketches
DRAWING DONE!
I hope I helped you!
What do I like drawing most?
*maniacal laughing*
D O K I D O K I
Thank you very encouraging! I grew up on anime and I have my own style for that pretty down but its probably still evolving! Now I am taking interest in western styles and old cartoon styles like Rubber Hose style and more so I want to develop one like that as well! Art is so fun! Enjoy everyone and don't worry you will get there!
@Cwoo!, dont beat yourself up about it. Keep drawing until you like what you draw, and take criticism into account. Ask people about what they like least about your art, and you might realize that's what you don't like about your art and try to fix it! But whatever you do, dont get too upset about what other people say or even your own self doubt. Eventually, you'll find something you like and keep on doing it.

I know that feel. Until like yesterday, I was convinced I'll always use a quite realistic artstyle because I just love kinda realistic artstyle. Well I was just scribbling on paper a few weeks ago and I've drawn some chibi weird things. Yesterday I came to the horrible realization that I actually like them and now I can't decide which is my main artstyle. Like wtf brain?
Finding an art style for an artist is like finding the purpose of life XD
(Wait what why do I have so many likes)
Nico Nico Nii true lmao
You have perfectly summarized how hard it is to find your art style.
yeah... I might as well not have a purpose in life right now...
Are you okay buddy?
"You'll see purpose start to surface"
Idk if this was intentional but is that a kitchen sink reference
What my style became since it took me forever to get liners and pens scared me: Commitment? Line art? Never heard of it.
That said, I've actually had a lot of people tell me that clean lines just dont feel "me" and that they preferred messier sketches or messier/more jagged line art. I also kind of prefer it (and not just because it's easier)
This is really awesome cause I always feel guilty when I copy someone else's art style even positions , I feel like I don't deserve the praise I get.

I am so glad I watched this! Thank you LavenderTowne! I was having so much trouble drawing to the point I wanted to quit until I watched this! This is why you are my Idol at drawing!
I’m 8 and that’s important for what im about to tell you, I found what I liked drawing the most by just copying what my friend did to draw. She was very good at art and I was not, she was AMAZING for her age! You could literally mix up her anime with a 15 year olds anime! So being the competitive little brat I am, ‘-‘ I started drawing her art style, and asking her for help, and learning her techniques, soon I got bored of anime characters with wolf ears a tail and a standard woman’s THIN body. And one day in art class I was curious after watching a naruto episode with my brother, I had never seen other anime at the time and in art class I wondered … “is there other ways to draw anime?” Narutos style of anime was so different than mine.... So I searched on the school iPad “anime drawings” and down the rabbit hole I went! I eventually stoped copying and came out of my comfort zone. I didn’t want to draw ears on this character, I didn’t want to make her thin as a stick! And I didn’t want to trace, because at this point I wanted to be able to make real art without tracing. And after that, I started practicing art none stop, and currently my style is a slightly curvy anime with realistic proportions and hair but fantasy enough nobody expected it coming! And that pretty much explains how I got my art style!
This- you're eight, I wish I was into art as much as I am now when I was your age, I can't-

I've been loving your content the last few days, the way you give advice and talk about the topics is very down to earth and "soft"
I feel most artists, like you said, just tell you to practice, to find your own way and not look at others and I'm sure they mean it in a positive way but that's good advice for someone that already knows how to draw and simply needs to go to "the next level"
For absolute beginners tho, your content is a godsend, I really mean it when I say thank you, I've picked up digital drawing and I'm happy with my progress so far, partly because of your videos:)
I can’t believe I’ve watched you for so long! I decided to return to this video specifically since I want to start my own channel and comic now that I’m older and could handle that. • k a k a s h i • I drew when I was two years and eight years after it I found my style just take your time
Same here my friend same here T_T
Same. Lol I just draw, and it changes suddenly, and I have no idea how it happens.
I get bored so easily with styles so I'm always jumping to the next one. I don't know if I'll ever have my "own" style at least a style that will stick.
Death Queen feelin ya, mine changes EVERY time i figure out a new angle to anatomy (my pitfall is in my anatomy). I cant get a style to stick, although if i go back through my work i do notice similarities between my current drawings and the kind of stuff i did way back in primary school, (just more refined because, you know, i didnt know anatomy was even a thing in primary school).
SilverDirt Draws yeah but I'm the type of person who never likes to keep things the same I always want something diffrent that's probs why my style changes. Maybe it's the same for you *shrugs* who knows.
Yeah, some artists don't really have a certain style but, that doesn't make you NOT a artist.
I used to be like that, I would switch styles almost daily, and a lot of them would look incredibly similar to whatever artist I was into at the time. obviously this changed a lot and I would find that one particular style wouldn't work for a particular artwork so I'd either switch to one I'd already developed or develop a new one for that piece, and after about three or four years of this I finally got something similar to the style I use now. it still changes a lot but it's less drastic changes now, usually I just change parts to make them more realistic because I'm trying to work out real proportions before I simplify it, but I think it proves that just because your style changes a lot now doesn't mean it'll always stay that way.
You could try to let the style find you instead of searching for one. Try as many as you like and while you do see which characteristics stick to you and which you like best. Also having multiple styles isn't bad at all, it's actually better.
When I was doing my first oc, I started with tracing a picture of Mina Ashido and once I started drawing it more without the reference, I started to see my style. That method worked perfectly and i would recommend it so much :D
OMG! this was so helpful, and I have decided to actually LISTEN to someone for once and do this, because it actually helps me to understand which things to do, and also how to more express my characters. Thank you Lavendertowne, you are so helpful!

For me it was or sleeved because it was still cute but usually I just kinda drew blobs😳✌️
Yep. When I learned to put hands behind back it was great
So many people crying in a corner...

Joins while watching Fullmetal Alchemist.
I can’t get away from that show!!!
So do you want to make a no style club?
Im in the: "im not good enough,i have to learn shades so i can become better..." phase
This popped up into my recommended and I am so glad it did. I have been a lil lost with my style and this helped me find it easier. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Does anyone get like, art style dysphoria?? Like I like semi realism but I also love cartoony stuff too and my art style basically goes back and forth :///
I am doing mixtures with my style!
Um boi me too
I adjust the realism depending on the character. I usually make more stoic or scary characters lean a bit more on the realistic side, but it can also go the other way 'round.
That describes me perfectly. I love both semirealism and cartoon but I basically get art dysphoria whenever I draw...
juunbug I have roughly 5 different art styles that I switch between. So I agree. Semi-realistic (like comic books), more cartoony, and a lot of little variable styles
My style phases (so far)
1- stick hoomans
2- waffle blobs
3- “realistic” faces
4- sweatshirt galls
5- Gacha edits
6- bad anime
7- mitten kids
8-starfish beans
9-chibi beans
Woah we’ve gone through the same phases!
Silver Lollipop REALLY!! *COOL!*
I can’t draw Good TwT phases of me:
1: chibi
2 realistic cats
3: cartoon
4 comics
5 still life
6: chibi (again)
7: anime
8: kawaii cats
9: cartoon with realistic proportions (today)
cXtprism I’m currently going through a cartoon with realistic proportions phase too! Only thing is...I’m not very good at drawing lol
Silver Lollipop I barely have anyone to rate my art so idk if its good or not
I have watched a lot of videos and read a lot of stuff on social media about finding your style and such. I've always known what direction I wanted my style to go but never really where to start to find my style. When you said something about making rules for your style, that really seems to stick with me and I feel like I may be able to go about finding a style I enjoy a lot. I'll try to come back and edit this once I've got a style for myself. Thank you!!!
duudeee im so impressed with your art you inspire me sooo much 😌😌😊
YALLLLL heres a tip that no one told me, idk if it’ll work for everyone but heres what i did:
i started drawing in pen instead of pencil and because you cant rub it out i just went along and kept sketching in pen, because of that it made my drawings better? cause i kept practicing instead of rubbing it out and thats also how i found my style in such a short amount of time. (also look at other artists styles and see what u like and try drawing that but dont like fully copy it) its only been a few days and ive found a style i really like, i just need to work on the eyes :)
I found my style while making fanart, i never used eraser as a child i always just draw with pen even now,i can draw a finished thing without erasing a thing and my style is pretty realistic so
I only found my eye style, but i will try what you said
The eyes are the hardest because they make things look completely different
Pen's good
I went from pencil to Ink pens! I got really bored with me erasing every tiny thing I thought looked wrong, So I stopped drawing for a time. until I started to draw with ink pens (Thanks to Inktober that got me interested) It felt easier in some weird way, because I couldn't rubb away the mistakes, so I got more confident that "I can actually do this!" instead of "That looked bad! Just rubb it away!" The only time I use pencils is when I am sketching really lightly! =)
I often draw nature like trees stones mountains (landscapes) and houses
Sorry for my bad English! I don't speak it normally!
A day ago; Yes! This is my new style!
A few hours later; Yes! This is now my better style!
A day later: •••
i’m in the “liking someone’s art style so much that i even store photos for references and to understand her art style more”
Im just getting most of my style from you and changing things to make it easier and a tiny bit different i love your style so much and look at so many. In my opinion, yours fit my abilities and over all style the most so thank you so much!🥰

i can draw lots of things fine, but hands... just hands... like what the heck, id rather not
Crystal Robernson I can draw hands, but I can't draw the fingers XD
Crystal Robernson 50/50 chance for me.
the hands I draw always either look professional and as if they were literally made by god, or... the opposite.
Crystal Robernson your profile seems to tell the opposite.
@mister this is actually a stockphoto I found
I agree, Hands are a pain to draw. I always have to sketch them lightly when drawing
"everything I saw would leak into my art for a while"
Sounds like me except instead of art I feel like it affects my personality for a while
Camden Lushman TRUE
I'm in my south park phase rn and I literally just look at the fanart for hours and save drawing styles that I love for inspiration. I can draw heads okay, and I just full on free style the faces but when it comes to drawing bodies I have to trace over references, but it ends up contrasting with the layout and style of the face ect and I just can't seem to make the bodies look okay with the heads. Another thing I'm struggling with is the shapes of the hair and all the textures in clothing and dhgfxhdeyugr it's just so hard, and I really want to be able to make south park animatics, I'm not giving up since I'm pretty much new to digital art and actually drawing good stuff, but it can just get so frustrating
Ty a lot for this vid lavender.you have helped me realize that I don’t HAVE to keep changing my art style every day.and like literally copying other art.now I now realize that I have My own art style.it’s okay if it’s different, thank you a lot for helping realize this.love your vids!
For some reason, I’ve had this awful art block ever since quarantine started and I’ve completely lost the ability to draw eyes in a specified style😅
Melanie lempiä Same! I can’t really draw the eyes the way I did last 6 months

*My art style started from copying Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and gradually changing my OC self to look more like me. But I haven't picked up a pencil in like two years.*

How have I not subbed to this woman yet, SHE IS AMAZING!
*Chefs kiss* 😚😍😍
You really inspire me alot. If I didn't see your videos I would have never thought about becoming a artist. I want to thank you for helping me become who I am today.😊
how to find your art style:
Step 1. Draw noodle arms
Done. What’s next?
I was in the Phase
Okkk ReALly
Step 2. Draw 3 smaller lines as fingers
Step 3 add body hair and make the character very obese
After I watched this, I sat down for 8 hours straight and tried different things, and I’ve actually begun developing a style!! Very helpful, thanks so much!
Matsuyama Kitty aww good job!
