    Last year in the Delaware river I was fishing for stripers after watching some of your videos and you were saying how you hate weight. So I tried doing it your way, I accomplished the exact opposite of you LoL. They didn’t touch that rod for nothing. Great videos man love them!

    Nice vid Mike, got a question. I live near a lake In PA got a boat and the whole nine yards, we have Alwife and Gizzards in the lake, how do you hook them? And how big of shad do you use?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 роки тому +1

      I go as big as possible with Alewives and up to 8” with Gizzards on lakes with small Stripers and to the max size on lakes with 20lb fish. Through nostrils sometimes and in the mouth and out the top other times.

    So you said don’t yank when using an offset circle hook or even a regular circle hook... do you just do a steady pull upwards to set the hook ideally, or just let the fish have it and start reeling once I think he ate it?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 роки тому +1

      If the fish runs hard right away I do nothing but keep the rod high. If the fish is tentatively pulling away I will crank fast to the fish until I feel it’s hooks. If you want, you can do a long steady “pulling up” of the rod, but never deliver a sharp violent hook set.
      This might help. ua-cam.com/video/ftPU4soUf3g/v-deo.html

      Mike Smedley thanks for the tips man. Caught a bunch of big blue cats the other day but unfortunately missed out on a lot of stripers due to not letting the hook set properly. I’ll remember what you said next time.

    What we’re using for bait?

  • @Gibsonguitarman89
    @Gibsonguitarman89 5 років тому +1

    Why not just always keep the offset hook versus non offset? Less guy hooked fish with non offset?
    I used circle hooks and got so tired of guests getting excited and setting the hook and thus not hooking the fish I switched to octopus j hooks and rarely guy hook fish and have way more success. Just curious your take cuz I’m alwats opinion to trying new things.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  5 років тому

      The offset sometimes doesn’t let the hook slide out of the belly so we still see some gut-hooked fish. Bigger fish especially, have a tendency to swallow the bait in one quick shot. If there is no offset, the hook can slide out of the belly to find the lip. Offset circle hooks also tend to still hook the fish when yanked sometimes. When I have a boat full of patient, experienced guys I go NON offset all around, but if I have even ONE greenhorn I use offset circles. I can honestly say that my hookup ratio is close to 100% when the fish at least bends the rod down to the water with NON offset hooks. We may miss a diddler or two, but usually small fish anyway. Try the Owner light MUTU circles and Daiichi Circles. Unbelievable hookup ratios. I’ll bet you never go back to J hooks. Also, I have lost countless BIG fish on J hooks because they were gut hooked. You fight the fish to the boat and then the hook pulls from the soft stomach. A few minutes later we see a dying fish float to the top flopping around just dying from gut damage. I’m willing to be that MOST big fish pop off due to gut-hooking.

      The guys from Bait Caddy sent me a few quite a few years back (2004 or so) and I love them. I have a 55 that can keep SkipJack all day long. The company still exists, but unfortunately they don’t make Bait tanks anymore, just other plastics. If I was gonna buy a new one today I would get a Creekbank or a Shad Shack. The new Evolution tanks look good too. I’ll see if I can find the Bait Caddy Number, I’ll bet he will still make one or two by order.
