I have watched this video multiple times. I feel like I’m there with you guys and that is what I look for in a fishing video. Love it. I just got your decals in the mail and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it man. 👍thank you
Really appreciate your videos man. I live 30 minutes from lake raystown in PA. Huge stripers in there, I'm a flathead maniac so I drive 6 hours round trip to the Susquehanna every weekend to chase giant flatheads....i need to learn stripers! Be nice to save all that gas at least every once in a while lol!! These videos you put out are without a doubt, the most informative that I jave been able to find. Thank you for putting the time in to make them.
I might not have as nice of a boat. (it's a pontoon) I might not have all that simrad gear. (We have the cheap Garmin stuff) I might not have all that fancy rigging and tackle. (Walrmart GX2) I might not catch my own bait. (frozen anchovies) But I can 100% guarantee we have as much fun as you guys and we're super thankful for all the tips and tricks! You guys rule and motivate me to step my striper game up!
Mike, thank you for another great video. As a recently retired guy looking to develop my new hobby, these are very helpful! I appreciate the time and effort you put in to sharing these.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Just the one you said you were working on regarding where the fish are actually located when viewed on the fishfinder. I think there is a way to measure distance from marked fish to boat on my lowrance but haven't figured it all out yet, especially when viewing sidescan.
Great video Mike!! Really impressed with your net throwing skills and appreciate all the details on handling baits, setting rods, etc. I will be watching this video a couple of times to make sure I can record all the good tips and advice. Thanks!
Great video Mike. Really appreciate you always being very open and informative. Been watching your videos for years, pretty cool to see your kids grow up along the way. Tight lines.
I really appreciate that brother!! These types of videos take forever to make so hearing positive feedback is awesome. That’s my youngest boy, he can squat a city bus but won’t swat a fly. Thanks again brother!!

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I think I have a much better chance at catching them since I started watching your vids... I'm actually originally from South Jersey so, I like when I see you up that way too because I plan to take my boat up there too.... Soooooo, do you haul your boat everywhere you go?
Been binge watching your videos. Hoping to get my first striper this weekend. Primarily I fish lake Allatoona in Northwest Georgia because its the closest to me. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Great video! My aunt and uncle have a house on the NC side in Pretty Creek. We come down (from Ohio)every summer so the girls can swim and I can fish. Taught myself to fish for Stripers trolling jigs and plugs. Of course I had a lot of help from some friends that have mastered the art of precision trolling on Lake Erie. Anyway looks like it’s time to learn to throw a cast net and do it Team Old School way. Keep rockin out the videos!
My understanding is 10-degree change at most for these baits. I have shocked more than a few doing too much of a cool down with ice. I've had lots of luck using foam off to keep that ammonia in check.
Funny story. I was tossing the net off the back of a ranger and over rotated and rolled myself right off the edge and into the drink. just glad it was about 80ish
thomas noland I appreciate that brother, but Unfortunately I had to stop guiding years ago when I started traveling so much and shooting video on so many different bodies of water. I never know exactly where I’ll be. You really need to fish 1 or 2 bodies to deliver a trip of a lifetime. It’s not possible to stay on consistent fishing when I’m always jumping around. Sorry brother.
I know that sounds like a broken record but all your videos are so well put together very informative. I come away learning something new if not many things new each and every time thank you Mike
Great video man! Thanks a lot for doing a few freshwater videos for us freshwater guys. I really enjoy the instructional videos. I fish a couple lakes without the river system you was fishing so I have to fish deep in the summer. Have you seen the seaqualizer striper? Curious on your thoughts on it for C&R summer fishing. Thanks again!
Thanks brother!! I appreciate the comment!! I really like that tool. I grew up catching Lake Trout that we had trouble releasing, as a kid I rigged a milk crate with a 2 pound weight on it to get those fish back down to the 80-90 ft depths we caught them from so I think that equalizer is a great idea. You’re probably like me, we understand that a lot of the summertime fish die after release, but their chances are better in the lake than in the cooler. I think tools like that definitely increase survival chances. I know for a fact that it helped with lake trout because they were all tagged and I recorded them all just to see. Let me know if there is anything you would like to see in a video. Thanks again!👍👍
Interesting to see that you use Motorguide trolling motors. That's what I am considering buying. The GPS went out on my Minn Kita. Not supported any longer so can't fix. Minn Kita has been less than helpful assisting me.
Thanks brother!! Kerr is a fun lake. I wish they would skip a few years on the stocking though. They put SO MANY millions of tiny Stripers in that lake over and over. Massive schools of Stripers so small they look like White Perch even after 2-3 years. I bet that lake would be like it was in the late 80’s early 90’s if they left it alone for 5-10 years. Just MY thoughts.
That was an excellent instructional video on Striper fishing. That's a super nice bait tank you've got there. I want to start casting for my own bait instead of buying it local. You throw like a champ. Have you got an instructional video on throwing a net? Also, I have been using chlorine remover for my city water. So far, it seems to do a good job as long as I let the tank run for a few hours before adding the herring. Again, great video. I learnt a thing or two from it.
That’s awesome brother!! I appreciate that. Yes sir I have a few videos on how I throw the net. Scroll down a bit and you should see them. I have learned since then that chlorine doesn’t freeze. It escapes as gas when the water is frozen so that explains why I never had an issue with gas station ice. 👍👍. Keep me posted. Let me know how your netting goes 😊👍. Thanks brother!

Another great video, Mike. For freshwater striper, can you live line small bluegill? They are easy and fun to catch, plus they are very abundant (at least where I live). I use them a lot as cut bait for catfish. I know some people use live bluegill to catch largemouth. I also heard a story about a guy who drifted live bluegill in the Indian River in Delaware. He only got a few drifts in the saltwater before the bait died, but he caught stripers. What do you think?
Stripers ABSOLUTELY eat Bluegill. I’ve seen them cough up anything they fit down the gullet and something’s they can’t. Think about a Striper striking any artificial plug, WHO KNOWS what that Striper thought that plug actually was. It appears alive and swallowable- meets criteria 😁, and alive is just a bonus. On this particular lake White Perch are allowed to be caught in a cast net for Bait now and I have used them in a pinch. Just be careful about the laws where you live, everywhere is different of course, but lots of places let you use different kinds of Bream if you caught them on hook and line (like you do), and keep to creek limits. I HAVE heard of States that forbid certain Bream for bait. Thanks for the comment brother!! Great question!!
Hey Mike I live powhatan, VA. Went and targeted stripers down on the james before we had all these storms and caught my first striper while targeting them. Thanks for taking the time to explain as much as you do! I do have a couple questions. 1. How can I find them using just nav charts specifically on a river like tbe james as I'm not that confident in using my electronics. That and my no drill mount came flying off and about took me out last Wednesday. 2. I'm fishing just down from the maury street Bridge in Richmond. Should I be driving further east and fishing further down the river or stay in the area I'm at? Is there a certain point in the time of the year I should do this vs not? I'm running a 1860 tracker with a 50hp so I am limited when water is rough but willing to drive a bit further if quality and opportunity is going to increase. Thanks again for making the videos and sharing with all of us!
Great video. I just found you channel. A friend of mine on UA-cam "fishin n stuff" told me about your channel and I have been enjoying your videos. Thanks for the content. 👍
I got me a 25 gallon bait tank , I'm new to live bait fishing. I putt 2 1/2 cap fills to break the city water , 2 cups of salt , and 20 lbs of ice to cool it. , house water is 80 degrees, bait tank temp was 67 degrees , I'm fishing 27 feet down , the thermocline is at 35 feet , after 8 minutes my shad would die .Any help would help me learn this live bait , hybrid fishing! I think my bait tank temp was to low , and the shad maybe died of temp shock . By your video you dropped the temp by 10 degrees from surface temp , is this the normal in all the freshwater lakes you fish thanks and awesome video .I live in central TX, I fish Belton lake reservoir. Nothing like a hybrid bass tugging at the end of your line!
It definitely could be temp shock but 9 times out of 10 when bait dies fast on the hook it’s because you dropped the bait below or into the thermocline where there is very little dissolved oxygen. There are several layers to the thermocline, you maybe marking only one layer but there can be deadly layers for Shad higher up. Next time that happens set out a few test baits at different depths and see if any live longer than others. There can be a huge difference in 8 feet of water. I see this a lot with downlines
What time of the day/night are you fishing please? I've done lots of types of fishing, but haven't tried stripers yet. I'm trying to learn basics before this summer as I plan to try it over July 4th week on Lake Ouachita. Thank you for a very informative video.
Hi Mike you are doing great, My name is Baykal from Turkey.I am very impressed you guys.I like to fishing and l am living in New Jersey, we are going to finish Hudson River and sometimes Reservoir. I catch couple of fish but I would like to get Stripped Bass. Could you please tell me which Equipment you suggest me? And give me some bait ideas please. Thank you, Thank you…….
Hey man I would really love if u could make it out to lake norman NC. We had good striper for along time but, one bad summer killed all the fish. So its been 9 years since the die off and the hybrids are getting big.this is the hardest lake to catch striper/hybrids. Pleasecome down let me tag along as navigator so I can learn from the BEST!!!
I appreciate that brother!! I have actually fished Norman several times when we fished the NSBA. I remember weighing in a 6lb fish at the big Spring Classic. 3 day event, over 200 teams. We were so bummed. Turned out, we took 3rd place!! Crazy. You should come fish with us sometime, maybe on Murray or Lanier. Murray is close to you. Shoot me an email. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com
Hey capt. Mike. I had a simrad question. When I pick a gps spot in my chart and hit "go to" the line to the spot I pick doesn't adjust as the boat moves? Is that how simrad works? My raymarine would constantly adjust as I left the dock to go out to a wreck.. love the vid. Did some stripper fishing on lake Anna in VA and used my t-top light to attract bait under the bridge too. It takes five mins and the sonar lights up with bait.. underwater dock lights work great too on fresh water lakes.
Brad 31 Hey brother, you will need to use auto routing to set a route to navigate by or you can set a route manually. When you enter “go to” numbers or a waypoint it will shoot a straight line to it just to show you where it is. 👍👍 Thanks Brother!!
Man, why did you make this video? Now I have to go load the boat and head to SML striper fishing for a few days! I actually have a trip planned after the Labor Day crowd is over, then going up there for 3-4 days. I originally lived near Greensboro and traveled to VA to striper fish for years. I was a hardcore bass guy until I was invited to go striper fishing, two striper fishing trips and I was hooked. Within 6 months I had sold the bass boat, purchased a new 21' Carolina Skiff and completely rigged it as a striper boat. Now live on the coast catching all types of species from a 24' bay boat, but miss the striper action. I catch some large fish at the coast but still hard to beat the excitement of a large striper slamming a side planer or down line!
Sorry brother!!😂😂. SML is a blast. GO STRAIGHT to seen Dewayne Lamb at Captains Quarters. Tell him I sent you. He will give you the skinny on exactly what the fish are up to and give you the shirt off his back at the same time!! Are you still in NC?
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS - Thanks! I have a buddy that talks to a few of the guides and the retired neighbors that fish a lot, he lives in Indian Creek area. He can usually give me some input on what part of the lake they are in. I will look Dewayne up about a week before I go. Yes, near Wilmington.
Chris M Definitely stop in to see Dewayne. He has every Striper toy you can think of in Captains Quarters. You need to fish the bridges in January and February for Stripers out there. Pitch eels and Bucktails. 100 fish days brother! Dewayne himself was one of the top guides and Striper tournament fishermen on SML. In fact he was also the NC State Champion for several years in the NSBA. He’s a bad ass.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS - It can be crazy up there when the fish are on. My best day was with 2 friends onboard. 6 side planers, 4 down rods and 2 free lines. 47 striper in 3.5 hours in one cove. I will defiantly go see Dewayne the day I get there. I usually launch and stay at Westlake hotel which is just North of the bridge.
Mostly striper fish in a resavoir. Can see them schooling on FF but don't hit much. My sister has had better luck fishing the California delta. Guess I need to head up there.
I have found that there are more schooling fish in freshwater that appear to be Stripers more so than in salt. White Perch. White Bass. Crappie. Even Catfish to a degree. I have been fooled plenty of times thinking I was over Stripers when I wasn’t. That’s definitely something to keep in mind. I recommend simply moving on when you find a school that won’t bite. 👍👍
Many many times. We shot this there with my good friend and guide Chip Bragg ua-cam.com/video/VJKHMkQ84r4/v-deo.html He’s on FB if you’re want to set up a trip. Tell him I sent you.
I have a 9 ft net and I’m terrible at throwing it. Kills my back to use it plus I also suck. 😂 how small of a cast net can be effective? I go by myself normally. Really only need a couple dozen baits. Is a 5 ft net just a waste of time?
Sorry brother. I travel so much nowadays that I can’t run trips anymore. To be a great guide you really have to stay on one or two bodies of water to deliver that lifetime trip. Shoot me an email though. Sometimes I have room for you to jump on for free. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com Thanks!!
Th bracket is made by Joey Scruggs it’s my design. His number is in the description. I use CeSmith rod holders (also in description). It’s a Bait Caddy but they don’t make them anymore.
I fish on the Tennessee river chain and I have no fish finder or anything like that so how should I striped fish because it’s my dream to catch one on my own
Drift live Skipjack down stream near the banks or fish cutbait on the bottom on points. 👍👍. Get up close to the damns too, but be careful. Keep safe distance.
Hey brother!! Yep, it’s a freshwater lake. We add salt to all kinds of Shad and Herring, but nothing else. They can live in both fresh and saltwater and do much better in captivity with some salt. Just don’t use table salt, get rock salt for pools or water softeners.
Hey Mike I make planer boards would u like to try some of mine also I have a couple lures I have made that I would love to get your opinion if u have time

Im a big fan of afternoon till dark, that is what we do 99% of the time. but most Striper fishermen fish early morning.
Great video. I'm learning your tactics, it's very helpful.
Thanks brother
Do you use lake water , or city water when filling up your tank in fresh water , thanks and awesome video!
Thanks brother. I use well water first, lake water second. Never city water.
have you ever fished carters lake in northeast georgia? this lake produces some monster striper
I have fished Lanier, Clark’s hill and Hartwell. Lanier is awesome!
How fast you pull planer boards low speed up to high speed on lake hartwell with live bait and artificial thanks good video
Greg davenport Thanks brother! On lakes I go a bit slower than most, .3 - 1.2mph usually, but as fast at 1.8-2mph on occasion.
Great video! Do you have a link for the nets you throw? Or size? Can't wait to use some of these tips, thank you!
Hi Mike you are doing great,
My name is Baykal from Turkey.I am very impressed you guys.I like to fishing and l am living in New Jersey, we are going to finish Hudson River and sometimes Reservoir. I catch couple of fish but I would like to get Stripped Bass. Could you please tell me which Equipment you suggest me?
And give me some bait ideas please.
Thank you, Thank you…….
I love Striper Stealth rods in Mh
Thanks brother!!!
Accurate valiant fury or Terns are awesome in 400 regular wides.
30lb mono.
On the lakes use Herring they sell at the shops. In salt use fresh Bunker. Bloodworms and clams are good for smaller fish.
Awesome video man just subscribed!
Thanks brother!!
Hey capt.
You need to check out Miramichi NB stripers. The most insane striper fishing on the planet. You can catch 100 a day.
@@johndeere2799 That’s one place I haven’t heard much about. Fish have good size too?
Chris M AINT NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!! 👍👍
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Good to know. Thanks. My luck lately hasn't been so great but it's enough to just be out there. Fish on!
Mike, Thanks, Always enjoy watching your videos. Curious Do you ever use the boat live well?
John
Sure, I use them in saltwater all the time and in freshwater when the water cold.
MIKE, ever fish lake murray? any good guide you know of?
Many many times. We shot this there with my good friend and guide Chip Bragg ua-cam.com/video/VJKHMkQ84r4/v-deo.html
He’s on FB if you’re want to set up a trip. Tell him I sent you.
good vid.
Thanks brother!
I have a 9 ft net and I’m terrible at throwing it. Kills my back to use it plus I also suck. 😂 how small of a cast net can be effective? I go by myself normally. Really only need a couple dozen baits. Is a 5 ft net just a waste of time?
Try a light 8fter 1lb per foot and try to throw the old school method. It’s super easy. It’s in my channel. My Oldest video I think.
Here ya go!! Use an 8 ft. ua-cam.com/video/OBDdoOnGwbI/v-deo.html
Mike Smedley Thanks dude.
I took my net outside on my deck and practices for 30 days now I throw a 15 ft net great ever time
Love it. Hell yeah!!
Do you do guided fishing trips on Kerr? Would love to take my son out.
Hi , Great video.
Do I need a fresh water license when targeting stripers in fresh water ?
Yes. Every state requires fishing license.
Nice fish! were those medium heavy rods?
Wankel Rotary yes sir. MH.
What brand rod holder and T bracket are you using. Also what brand bait tank.
Th bracket is made by Joey Scruggs it’s my design. His number is in the description. I use CeSmith rod holders (also in description). It’s a Bait Caddy but they don’t make them anymore.
Hey Mike, great video. where do you get your glass beads and what size are they?
Maia 10 thanks brother. I wanna say they are #3’s. I got them from Cabelas.
Where would someone purchase those rod holders that are perpendicular to your gunnels?
I fish on the Tennessee river chain and I have no fish finder or anything like that so how should I striped fish because it’s my dream to catch one on my own
Drift live Skipjack down stream near the banks or fish cutbait on the bottom on points. 👍👍. Get up close to the damns too, but be careful. Keep safe distance.
Hi Mike, first thank you for all the vids buddy!! Second is that a freshwater lake and if so the salt you added didn’t hurt the bait?
Hey brother!! Yep, it’s a freshwater lake. We add salt to all kinds of Shad and Herring, but nothing else. They can live in both fresh and saltwater and do much better in captivity with some salt. Just don’t use table salt, get rock salt for pools or water softeners.
Does it depend on which lake/state that allow you to net these baits?
There are definitely different laws by state, I don’t know if they are not allowed in any state, but there are size limits for sure.
Who makes the bait tank you are useing I am looking for one with a filter thanks
Jim Bryson It’s a bait Caddy but they don’t make tanks anymore. I would get a Mel’s, Creek Bank or new Extreme.
A bud come down Crisfield md and catch some giant reds 40 plus pounds , let me know I have a place for your boat and sleeping . Thanks
Heck yeah!! Email me. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com
Hey Mike I make planer boards would u like to try some of mine also I have a couple lures I have made that I would love to get your opinion if u have time
Absolutely brother!! Shoot me an email. Mikesmedley9@gmail.com.
Do u ever fish lake Anna?
Never have, but a few buddies fish there a lot.
I want to know the price of the boat and electronics???? Lol👍
Do you ever use Braid?
Never with live or cut bait. I use on spinning reels baitcasters and reels for jigging.
Do you anchor when chunking ??
Yes sir.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks for the reply Mike ?
Can you use weights with the float setup
Absolutely!! 👍👍👍
Please try a smaller thrown net. You are too much better I promise. Turn on the 8 foot
There should be a great father bridge which way the winds blowing you should be able to tell the current where the drop in the water or whatever your father’s face covered up all those carrots the bigger shed
How would you fish this lake during the winter ?
Michael Lester we have had great luck on main lake points.
Just outside of Holly Grove and just outside of Poplar Creek. Downlines and jigs. 👍
You need some de foam for your shad tank.
Love your videos but a commercial every couple of minutes is worse than watching TV. Don't think I'll be watching too many more of your videos. Too bad because they are good.
Really?? How many are there? I set it to automatic so UA-cam sets them. I’ll check it now.
HOLY COW!!! UA-cam put 8 ad breaks on this one!!!! I’ll drop it to 2. Thanks for the heads up!! That’s crazy.
