As someone who has grown up with SRB2, evolved with SRB2, in terms of maturity and creativity, it wasn't just nostalgia. SRB2 2.1, even back then with it's strict and harsh community, would always be the golden age to my eyes. 2.2 brought so many changes that while I did come to enjoy, I still say 2.1 was the best. From Wii100 to Blacker, this game grew up with me. I've gone through constant hiatuses from it, as the rest of the community did. I remember a lot from srb2 members, this includes you, sandwichface. The only difference from you and the rest is you helped me somewhat take the thoughts out of my head from what I was thinking during the surge of lower quality mods flooding the message board. You've helped me realize how bad a state SRB2's community was becoming. While the modern world is more kind than what it was a decade ago, it's also a lot more cruel than it was a decade ago. I'm sorry that this community has broken you to a point that this is where you draw the line. If it makes you feel better, if I ever tend to do more shit with SRB2 and it's engine, I'll guarantee to make sure *you* think it's a good product in the end. I've been watching the trash bin showcases ever nearly since the first one. And I hope to see what you'll bring in the future. I kinda stopped playing srb2 around 2 years ago and I didn't even know they were this insane. I've never seen a community as toxic, or a community so restrictive with their modding rules. Literally no other community I've seen gives a shit about "portlegs" or "posting mods in any place besides the wiki"
heyy, I actually relate to this vid a lot. Started playing in 2011, still remember being a little kid filling chat with cringe in those lobbies full of people speedrunning levels all picking tails for the spindash flight trick; and around when I was 14 or so, I started hosting servers. I ended up becoming a core part of the community in some ways, I hosted a dedicated server for over an entire year straight, gaining a discord full of around 300 people (totally unrealistic by today's standards of srb2's state of online), and knowing the game like the back of my hand. I learned all the speedrun tricks, all the popular wads, how to make some myself, and remember being part of the big hype train leading up to 2.2. I was chronically online back then in my young teens I think, and the stress of it all lead to me leaving the community all together (last thing I remember was a huge wad creator being outed as a predator on the official discord (I didn't like the guy so I was like big win LMAO)); I still remember back then how pretentious the community was, and that was with the old members, but I also grew alongside newer popular community members whom I no longer have ties to and I saw their pretentious cults forming as well, so I can only imagine how horrid it's all become now. I felt much happier after I left the community, and never looked back, only occasionally play now, but it taught me the dangers of attachment, and what spearheading famous figures in a community can do to itself.
I had a similar experience with SRB2 tbh, I used to be super into it and played it a lot (alongside TF2 and Gmod) up to 2.2's release. It was also around when that one wad creator got outed for grooming that I really started losing interest (which was already kinda happening from just being in the community for so long, but I had also directly worked with the guy on SRB2-related stuff and had no idea about any of that until he got called out for it. I remember feeling really shameful about that and that definitely didn't help my growing detachment from the community.) I still play the game occasionally and check out mods from time to time, but I really dislike the state of the community. So needlessly pretentious over a Sonic fangame that's older than I am. There's treating modders with respect and giving credit where it's due and then there's treating their mods like high art. It's ridiculous and no other modding community I've seen is remotely like this; it's weird as hell.

I found you on the Thok video, where you absolutely changed my view on the design of this game and I hold the game just as highly without mods as I do with them because the game is so competently designed. An interesting aside from this video, is I was talking to a friend in a call and I brought up SRB2 (just generally, no specifics), and despite him not being involved in the community in any capacity whatsoever, instantly starting making fun of them, unprompted, because he knew the general reputation of that space. I assume through osmosis and other communities. He even made fun of them "getting pissy over copyright shit in a fan game based off of a video game series" (paraphrasing). He is not really a particularly big fan of Sonic, so if someone who isn't engaged with the SRB2 community has such a low opinion of them, it's safe to say that at least some of the stories of negative behaviour and toxicity that goes on every now and then has rippled into some general audiences. I don't personally have any ill will towards anyone in the community specifically, I was just kind of astounded that he was even remotely aware of the stuff that goes on.
I know you're not proud of that one Pokemon ROM hack video but I personally love stuff like that and want to see more, I think that one just didn't get views because of how niche the subject was. As long as you still have fun with this channel

I like hearing about communities and their stories like this. It sounds like SRB2 was really fun in the 2000s when it was smaller and the early 2010s when you started, i really wish i'd been there. I honestly apreciate you speaking out like that because i have been in some very similar communities to the current SRB2 one and i don't know what it is but something just keeps me from realising the community kinda sucks until someone else says it. Have fun with whatever else you make, if it's gaming related i'll probably stick around.
This showed up in my recommended randomly, so I have no idea what's going on, but I actually am aware about the devs being pretty bad at times. The code for SRB2 is so bad that the game lags on powerful hardware at times, and you can walk on the back of the lava wave in Red Volcano Zone, and they basically said "won't fix, it's not as important as adding new features."

I've been part of the community for about a year and, god damn, I see your point now. I never really contributed or talked within' the community but from what I saw when I looked over conversations it was...no...the game itself is good, but like many other fangames, the community gives it a terrible reputation.
I haven't played or looked into SRB2 much at all, but I defiantly know there still is some great content out there so a reminder that the game is still fun would have been nice. I also think that saying there won't be SRB2 content is unwise when you could one day just want to show the good side of the game by playing it with friends. Nitpicks aside, nice of you to distance yourself from the community for once. You have already been giving the community more than enough chances to be better no matter the better decisions you could have made to make your perspectives better. I have seen some Kamen Rider show, but zero Ultraman so I'm curious on what your first impressions of your content will be and how you will try to sell me on watching Ultraman.

I gotta be honest, I have no idea who you are since I'm pretty new to SRB2 in general, and I haven't interacted with anyone on the forums or servers to know what the community is like, so I can't speak on any of that. All I can say is that I'm very sorry that the community has gotten so toxic to the point where you never want to play the game again, that's just always tragic. My strategy has been and will always be to interact with people as little as possible for the things you like, I don't want things to be ruined for me all just of groups of people largely outside of something's control. Take Star Wars for example, I absolutely *despise* how toxic people can be for that. I don't like the communities, I don't like most of the content creators, and I don't like the constant drama, so I do my best to only view and play things either in isolation or to discuss it amongst an even more hyper specific group known for moderating this type of stuff when possible. I absolutely despise the Super Smash Bros. community in general as well, but without there being several subsections of it I never would've found out about stuff like Smash 64 Remix and PMEX/REX Remix, and I love those games. A lot of the toxic behavior when anything happens surrounding those is taken seriously too from what I can tell so far. (At least at this point in time) Really my point is that you will always be able to find different sections of each community to varying degrees when you look hard enough, both good and bad. I have no idea what the drama is with the overall SRB2 community as a whole is, and honestly I don't think I want to know. There's still plenty of good mods out there for those games and I usually don't care who actually made them. If there's some drama involved with some of those creators, moderators, etc. then that's all on them, I'm just here to look for quality content that will be fun to use in these games. Team Combi-Rings seems to be new to the scene and so far what they have put out is fantastic, I don't really care too much about who is behind making them and they seem to not care about that too since it's not easy to find any credits for them. Maybe it's just me but I think having a more "anonymous" team is a better idea in general, people can just come and go for any reason while the quality stays consistent. It's not a perfect solution but I think it helps. Anyways, I'm really sorry to hear that you have allowed this to get to your head, I hope it doesn't at least turn you away from enjoying the game ever again. To try and make things more positive, here are some more Sonic things outside of SRB2 I recommend checking out, as they all seem to have respectable people behind them (For some of them it's just one person, but often times at most like 5 of them): Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic CD Miracle Edition, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic 3 A.I.R., Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit, Sonic Mania Plus Addendum, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 Mod Loader (And the Dreamcast conversion mods, there's even a whole community dedicated to the Chao Garden), Sonic P-06, Sonic Riders DX, Sonic Riders Tournament Edition, Sonic Riders Zero Gravity Regravitified, Sonic the Comic and Archie Sonic Online, Sonic And The Fallen Star, Tails Gets Trolled (Yes really, although it doesn't have much to do with Sonic, still good stuff though) SATAM season 3 (WIP), Sonic Overture (WIP), Sonic Galactic (WIP), Sonic Studio (WIP). There's a lot more fan content out there besides these, but I feel like these are the most notable. I have no idea what the community efforts are like behind them, but the games are still fun and good if nothing else. I wish you the best of luck on whatever you do next.

As someone who has played this game since, dunno, like 2005? Really long time either way. I never really looked into the community, and my only brush with it might've been some of the refferences i've seen in the odd ODLC level. But, since i stumbled on this video, it makes me thing this might be a pretty darn deep rabbit hole i'm looking down. Interesting video, non the less.

To be entirely fair, I wasn’t watching you for one particular reason, it was mostly just because I was interested in hearing you talk about game mechanics. I started watching with your Thok debate video. So regardless of what you cover in the future, so long as you put in the same level of effort and give the same level of quality as the videos you used to make, I’m sure I’ll still watch. A secret third option you probably didn’t realize is that you could also always just talk about whatever interests you at the moment intermittently with planned videos. I think behind the scenes/beta stuff from games and media in general is an interesting topic that despite being covered on UA-cam, doesn’t generally discuss the reason why changes were made. Mostly just pointing out what was changed.

Ayyy long time SRB2 player and modder since 2009. I'll admit, the community back then and now has always been extremely toxic. It has gotten better, buuuut things don't always change I guess. I think the biggest change was Mystic getting the boot, but that doesn't fix the major issues overall, but at least they're trying I suppose. I mostly stay far away from the community with very little interaction. But I do enjoy what everyone both STJR and the community has done for the entire game, the game itself is honestly a technical marvel so to speak because it was all done within the Doom engine itself. "Doom Legacy port" but still Doom. I still hope you make more SRB2 videos though, like mod show case videos and what not. But no need to focus on the bullshit from the community. Am excited to hear your thoughts about Godzilla though, huge fan of that movie series and Simpson Hit and Run is suuuuch a good game.

Infact just today the mugen community disabled peoples ability to download mods if you didn't have the new challenger title and on top of that. If you disagreed with the update you basically had your IP leaked in the forums comments that explained the "event" So cheer up. There's actually way worse modding communities you could've done videos on. Also great video. Sad it came to this but frankly I enjoyed your explanations on the issues of the modding community.
I was a big srb2 fan during COVID to the end of 2022 it seems like I left the community before it all went to shit lol. (Idk what you would consider the downfall) The few years I was involved seemed pretty cool. Sad to see it fall apart
I feel you all too much when it comes to volatile communities like SRB2's. For as much as I love how the game has evolved, recent showings have been way less than appealing especially on an interactivity level. Granted I only lightly interacted with the community despite trying to venture into (and giving up on) characters and level creation. Definitely glad I never gone too much further into it now and I think I probably would be scape goat if I got any deeper. I'll still at least have a subscription for ya. I dunno if I'll watch everything you have going forward but you seem to have a flavour of interests and topics that are at least within a similar tune to mine. Otherwise I'll probably be lurking around the now private discord.

It's honestly extremely pathetic how people seem to defend anything to do with this game with their lives and would do anything to deflect completely valid criticism. This community really has gone to hell. I've only been watching your videos for a short time, but I always thought they offered some valid criticism and feedback and brought attention to some of the community's biggest problems. I've never gotten involved in the community, I've always enjoyed the game in private with friends and made one or two videos on it. And honestly, I'm glad because now I've realized how petty this community really is. All this for a fan project, a fan project that was meant to be a few fans coming together to CELEBRATE the community. An interesting aside from this video, is I was talking to a friend in a call and I brought up SRB2 (just generally, no specifics), and despite him not being involved in the community in any capacity whatsoever, instantly starting making fun of them, unprompted, because he knew the general reputation of that space. I assume through osmosis and other communities.
He even made fun of them "getting pissy over copyright shit in a fan game based off of a video game series" (paraphrasing). He is not really a particularly big fan of Sonic, so if someone who isn't engaged with the SRB2 community has such a low opinion of them, it's safe to say that at least some of the stories of negative behaviour and toxicity that goes on every now and then has rippled into some general audiences.
I don't personally have any ill will towards anyone in the community specifically, I was just kind of astounded that he was even remotely aware of the stuff that goes on.
I know you're not proud of that one Pokemon ROM hack video but I personally love stuff like that and want to see more, I think that one just didn't get views because of how niche the subject was. As long as you still have fun with this channel

I like hearing about communities and their stories like this. It sounds like SRB2 was really fun in the 2000s when it was smaller and the early 2010s when you started, i really wish i'd been there. I honestly apreciate you speaking out like that because i have been in some very similar communities to the current SRB2 one and i don't know what it is but something just keeps me from realising the community kinda sucks until someone else says it. Have fun with whatever else you make, if it's gaming related i'll probably stick around.

This showed up in my recommended randomly, so I have no idea what's going on, but I actually am aware about the devs being pretty bad at times. The code for SRB2 is so bad that the game lags on powerful hardware at times, and you can walk on the back of the lava wave in Red Volcano Zone, and they basically said "won't fix, it's not as important as adding new features."

I’m played srb2 since 2017 because of my friend who showed me and it was fun and wasn’t really around the fandom and I’ve only been playing mods and base I found this channel and watched all of these and I found it horrorify about all of these fandom, New sonic team jr, etc I hope this fandom for a free fan game gets less snobby and actually becomes a community

I never really contributed or talked within' the community but from what I saw when I looked over conversations it was...no...the game itself is good, but like many other fangames, the community gives it a terrible reputation.

I haven't played or looked into SRB2 much at all, but I defiantly know there still is some great content out there so a reminder that the game is still fun would have been nice. I also think that saying there won't be SRB2 content is unwise when you could one day just want to show the good side of the game by playing it with friends. Nitpicks aside, nice of you to distance yourself from the community for once. You have already been giving the community more than enough chances to be better no matter the better decisions you could have made to make your perspectives better. I have seen some Kamen Rider show, but zero Ultraman so I'm curious on what your first impressions of your content will be and how you will try to sell me on watching Ultraman.

I usually play SRB2 online (mostly in servers with the spice runners game mode) but I'm glad i keep myself away from the bad side of the community. Thanks for the srb2 vids, dude.
I gotta be honest, I have no idea who you are since I'm pretty new to SRB2 in general, and I haven't interacted with anyone on the forums or servers to know what the community is like, so I can't speak on any of that. All I can say is that I'm very sorry that the community has gotten so toxic to the point where you never want to play the game again, that's just always tragic. My strategy has been and will always be to interact with people as little as possible for the things you like, I don't want things to be ruined for me all just of groups of people largely outside of something's control. Take Star Wars for example, I absolutely *despise* how toxic people can be for that. I don't like the communities, I don't like most of the content creators, and I don't like the constant drama, so I do my best to only view and play things either in isolation or to discuss it amongst an even more hyper specific group known for moderating this type of stuff when possible. I absolutely despise the Super Smash Bros. community in general as well, but without there being several subsections of it I never would've found out about stuff like Smash 64 Remix and PMEX/REX Remix, and I love those games. A lot of the toxic behavior when anything happens surrounding those is taken seriously too from what I can tell so far. (At least at this point in time) Really my point is that you will always be able to find different sections of each community to varying degrees when you look hard enough, both good and bad.
I have no idea what the drama is with the overall SRB2 community as a whole is, and honestly I don't think I want to know. There's still plenty of good mods out there for those games and I usually don't care who actually made them. If there's some drama involved with some of those creators, moderators, etc. then that's all on them, I'm just here to look for quality content that will be fun to use in these games. Team Combi-Rings seems to be new to the scene and so far what they have put out is fantastic, I don't really care too much about who is behind making them and they seem to not care about that too since it's not easy to find any credits for them. Maybe it's just me but I think having a more "anonymous" team is a better idea in general, people can just come and go for any reason while the quality stays consistent. It's not a perfect solution but I think it helps.
Anyways, I'm really sorry to hear that you have allowed this to get to your head, I hope it doesn't at least turn you away from enjoying the game ever again. To try and make things more positive, here are some more Sonic things outside of SRB2 I recommend checking out, as they all seem to have respectable people behind them (For some of them it's just one person, but often times at most like 5 of them):
Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic CD Miracle Edition, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic 3 A.I.R., Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit, Sonic Mania Plus Addendum, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 Mod Loader (And the Dreamcast conversion mods, there's even a whole community dedicated to the Chao Garden), Sonic P-06, Sonic Riders DX, Sonic Riders Tournament Edition, Sonic Riders Zero Gravity Regravitified, Sonic the Comic and Archie Sonic Online, Sonic And The Fallen Star, Tails Gets Trolled (Yes really, although it doesn't have much to do with Sonic, still good stuff though) SATAM season 3 (WIP), Sonic Overture (WIP), Sonic Galactic (WIP), Sonic Studio (WIP). There's a lot more fan content out there besides these, but I feel like these are the most notable. I have no idea what the community efforts are like behind them, but the games are still fun and good if nothing else.

As someone who has played this game since, dunno, like 2005? Really long time either way. I never really looked into the community, and my only brush with it might've been some of the refferences i've seen in the odd ODLC level.

To be entirely fair, I wasn’t watching you for one particular reason, it was mostly just because I was interested in hearing you talk about game mechanics. I started watching with your Thok debate video.
So regardless of what you cover in the future, so long as you put in the same level of effort and give the same level of quality as the videos you used to make, I’m sure I’ll still watch.
A secret third option you probably didn’t realize is that you could also always just talk about whatever interests you at the moment intermittently with planned videos. I think behind the scenes/beta stuff from games and media in general is an interesting topic that despite being covered on UA-cam, doesn’t generally discuss the reason why changes were made. Mostly just pointing out what was changed.
I'm looking forward to the Hit and Run video.

A problem I have with media that I like (Sonic, Fnf, Azumanga) Seem to always have awful communities or awful sides of communities, Which makes it hard to call myself a fan of them, because then I would be associating myself as the bad part of said communities.

As someone who has wanted to get into making srb2 content, both in terms of the game and video form content surrounding the game, this is an immensely helpful perspective to have. I am not sure whether I'd ever like to interact with community outside of help or passing comments I'd get on videos and I think I'll refuse any contact anywhere on the topic matter outside of friend groups and the like.

Ayyy long time SRB2 player and modder since 2009. I'll admit, the community back then and now has always been extremely toxic. It has gotten better, buuuut things don't always change I guess. I think the biggest change was Mystic getting the boot, but that doesn't fix the major issues overall, but at least they're trying I suppose. I mostly stay far away from the community with very little interaction. But I do enjoy what everyone both STJR and the community has done for the entire game, the game itself is honestly a technical marvel so to speak because it was all done within the Doom engine itself. "Doom Legacy port" but still Doom.
I still hope you make more SRB2 videos though, like mod show case videos and what not. But no need to focus on the bullshit from the community. Am excited to hear your thoughts about Godzilla though, huge fan of that movie series and Simpson Hit and Run is suuuuch a good game.

There seems to be an issue with every modding community these days.
Infact just today the mugen community disabled peoples ability to download mods if you didn't have the new challenger title and on top of that. If you disagreed with the update you basically had your IP leaked in the forums comments that explained the "event"
So cheer up. There's actually way worse modding communities you could've done videos on.

I feel you all too much when it comes to volatile communities like SRB2's. For as much as I love how the game has evolved, recent showings have been way less than appealing especially on an interactivity level. Granted I only lightly interacted with the community despite trying to venture into (and giving up on) characters and level creation. Definitely glad I never gone too much further into it now and I think I probably would be scape goat if I got any deeper.
I'll still at least have a subscription for ya. I dunno if I'll watch everything you have going forward but you seem to have a flavour of interests and topics that are at least within a similar tune to mine. Otherwise I'll probably be lurking around the now private discord.

Very new to your channel, this is the first video of yours I'm seeing as I'm more of a casual when it comes to SRB2 and only ever heard about the game about 4 or 5 years ago or so.
If you could make a video that provides more context about this drama that's targeted more towards outsiders, I would very much appreciate it. I'd like to know for sure if this game and community is worth investing my free time in as someone who's an indie game developer.
It wouldn't be the first time I've seen a fangame or indie game be killed by community drama so I'm willing to hear it out.

I've only been watching your videos for a short time, but I always thought they offered some valid criticism and feedback and brought attention to some of the community's biggest problems.
I've never gotten involved in the community, I've always enjoyed the game in private with friends and made one or two videos on it. And honestly, I'm glad because now I've realized how petty this community really is. All this for a fan project, a fan project that was meant to be a few fans coming together to CELEBRATE the community.
