  • I used the Runna app to train for a sub 3 hour Paris marathon in 2024. I am happy to say it worked!
In this video I review the pros and cons. How it could be improved and whether I would use it again.

The one thing I’d like Runna to add is provision for taking account of parkrun within the overall plan.

It's very rare that training programs would have long runs up to 26 miles. Mainly because this would increase the risk of injury greatly and make it difficult to recover for the next hard workout. The rule of thumb is to have your long runs no longer than your target TIME. So if you want to run a sub 3 marathon, your long runs should be up to 3 hours long. But, of course, if you feel like you can handle a few 26.2 mile runs in your training, then why not...

I generally only get to 36km for marathon training, I’d say that’s normal. That extra 6km has never been the worst for me it’s usually around 24km where I need to dig in.

Strava is tracking activities, Runna is a planning/coaching app. The activity tracking in Runna is just for those few people who are not on Strava.

Yep, not even elites run the full marathon distance during the training block because there’s nothing to be gained from it.

Mans ego so precious he had to time his own rest breaks lmao
cant think of any reason why would care so much about rest periods being included other than other people seeing your runs. You get good value out of rest periods, tracking your HRR between reps, sets and over workouts allows you to see if your overreaching or not pushing hard enough

As well as stating the marathon time was actually a minute faster than the official time because of the watch distance. Ego spilling out all over the place.

Interesting take on intervals, the rest periods are 100% part of the workout. The overall effect of intervals is to overload to stimulate improvement but you can’t just keep doing that with breaks to recover. IMHO I’m not a coach but I have been coached a number of times.
