  • In this profoundly moving episode, Emma Kenny examines the tragic case of Tia Sharp, a 12-year-old girl from South London whose life was tragically cut short in a disturbing act of violence. This case, which shook the UK to its core, highlights the devastating consequences of betrayal by those who are supposed to protect.
Emma delves into the dynamics of Tia's relationship with her grandmother's partner, Stuart Hazell, the man responsible for her murder. She explores the psychological aspects of this betrayal, unraveling the complexities of trust, manipulation, and the harrowing reality of child abuse that often goes unseen.
With a sensitive yet analytical approach, Emma discusses the investigation that led to Hazell's arrest, the impact of Tia's death on her family and community, and the wider societal implications regarding child safety and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the vulnerable.
Join Emma Kenny for an in-depth exploration of the Tia Sharp case, as she seeks to understand the unspeakable, honor Tia's memory, and provide insights into preventing such tragedies from happening again.

I’m the same age as Tia. I remember when she went missing my mum wouldn’t let me out for a few days as she thought there was a child snatcher on the loose. I lived in south London. She saw the interview with Hazel when they were appealing for her to come home and she said to my dad “Gel he’s speaking in past tense!!! He’s fucking done it!” When they found her I was in Boots with my friend buying spray on semi hair dye and my mum called me to say they’d found her and that I needed to go home because she wanted to hug both me and my friend. I’ll never forget it! God bless you Tia❤

It makes my blood run cold with fear for other children, as there must be hundreds if not thousands of kids out there just in UK who are being abused and feel like they don't have anywhere to go for help and protection. When this case broke, and that monster was arrested and charged, I just thought how incredibly sad it all was. Tia loved Stuart, she trusted him, she thought of him as a loving grandad and he betrayed her in the most horrible way. He should NEVER EVER be released when you cross those precious lines with children you’re not fit to live in society in my opinion. Keep him whete he is it’s probably the safest place for him. Thank you Emma! When I was 6 years old I was abused by my friend's grandfather. It's always been difficult to put into words or label because not only did he never lay a hand on me, but I don't believe he had any sexual interest in children at all. That said, he made me do things, and forced a neighborhood boy & I to do sexual things to each other, while he filmed and took photos.
To this day I believe his motive was strictly financial. He was a predator but not a pedophile. I imagine it would have been more difficult had I been physically abused by him. But, it had its effects. To this day, if an older man innocently asks if we've met, I wonder if he saw those images of me.
I also realized quickly that this man was afraid of me. Whenever adults were in the room I could feel it, and that made me associate sexuality with power & control. I was a promiscuous teen who pursued teachers, bosses, married men, straight women - anyone who would be putting themselves at risk to be with me. It was dominance. Absolutely no connection with love or intimacy for years.
I was a sex addict. It's not a joke. I was compelled to do things I didn’t want to do. I rejected any kind of commitment. If you didn’t have something to lose, I wasn't interested. If you did, I loved knowing I had power over you. Funnily, I never used it. I never chose to implode someone's life. I'm now grateful for that. But, I do feel guilt & to some degree wish the school boards & wives knew they had someone who gave into temptation.
I was with one man off & on for about 5 years, starting when I was 17 & he was 28. I'd known (& liked) that he was married, until one day she came in to the restaurant he worked at. It's ridiculous, but it was the first time I realized she was a real person.
I spent most of my 20s celibate, hiding from the world & doing a lot of self analysis & soul searching. It all stemmed from what happened when I was 6 & that feeling that I had power over this man, who happened to be big, scary & well acquainted with crime.
I even came into a healthy, loving relationship. 15 years in Dec, we've never had an argument last a full day, no fighting, no cheating, no break up/make up drama. I still have to be careful. I don't go out drinking, I don't put myself in situations to be alone with any man I feel even the slightest attraction to. It's not like they'd all line up for me but I'm not risking everything I've worked for.
When that man dies, due to his status on local crime, it made the news. I cried. I released emotions I didn’t know I had. A lot of anger & resentment. I felt relieved that he was gone even though I'd never been afraid of him.
I sometimes wonder how he justified it. Was it ok since he wasn't touching the kids? Did he think it had to be an adult to do long term damage? How much did he make off my innocence? My ability to trust & have healthy, loving sexual relationships?
Much worse has happened to children, but none of it should. In my case, the ONLY reason for my trauma was the desire of some guy to watch it. Some guy who might have justified it because he may not have been physically hurting children.
If you are a part of any step in the child porn industry, you are guilty. You are destroying the lives of children & changing who they were going to be. You deserve to rot on hell.
My experience was before the internet. It's gotten so much worse, so much more extensive & easily attainable. These people need to be put away for life. Those who actually physically touch children should have their genetalia removed before being locked away for life.

Plain CRUEL & VERY Nasty. Parents should come with a health warning ⚠️ They should complete a serious course, and there should be a percent that fails. I imagine if Tia could speak from the grave, she would be so touched that you took so much time to investigate as thoroughly as you have, and how kindly you spoke of her character, and the way you wonder of her possible future if she hadn't been killed so cruelly.i can't imagine her shock when her grandad attacked her and she realised how serious he was in his intent.. Oh the poor girl... God,wrap her up in your arms and mind her, take care of her,and love her forever. Thank you Emma x

I look after children in care and it’s absolutely part of it to leave care with trauma, no matter the support you offer no matter how well ur team bond with and support the young person nothing replaces those familial bonds and that intrinsic support that the majority of us take for granted. I adore our kid, they’ve made amazing progress in their years with us and they will be leaving care soon with their GCSE’s, numerous courses and a level of education unusual in someone of their age. They’ve got an amazing life view despite their MH struggles and I have a strong belief that they’re going to be a success case for care but that doesn’t mean they all are and it’s rare you get to make the difference with most kids that we have made with ours. So much could and should be done to improve the care system

Yeah, I can't help but feel that I was almost in this case too. Makes me feel cold. When I was about 14 or so my mum got drunk and ended up on a park bench where she met this bloke. While she was drunk. On a park bench. My mum has been an alcoholic my whole life and this was the worse thing she could have done. I count my lucky stars to this day that this man wasn't a creep, but my mum started to drink more and even though he wasn't there all the time I managed to stay with various relatives. I was studying for my GCSEs at the time and ended up failing them. This man ended up beating my mum and luckily he got sent away and we never saw him again thank god. About 15 years ago now but to this day I am so angry at my mum for being a complete idiot and ending up in that situation. It could have ended up so much worse. To this day she refuses to speak about and tries to forget it didn't happen but she's always been immature and irresponsible. Thank god I'm never giving her grandkids.

  • @BiTe-Me

I think we can all agree that the way Christine and Stuart met was unconventional to say the least. But there is no question that this woman loved this child to bits... How horrible it must have been for her to lose Tia to a murder, the body be found in her own house where she smelled it not realising anything, be arrested on suspicion herself and to also lose trusted partner of almost 6 years finding out he was a pervert and a murderer... I mean it's hell of a price to pay for, what some of us would probably call, poor judgement... I'm in no way blaming her for Tia's death but when it comes to bringing adults into children's lives it's sooooo important to think twice... I remember Christine saying in the episode of britain's darkest taboos that she knew about his troubled life, that he drunk, smoked weed, been to prison but what he did before he met her had nothing to do with her. I agree with that to an extent... But then past behaviour is a good indicator of future behaviour and past like this should at least be a massive red flag to have this man in the house around a child within a week...

I think giving kids roots and wings is really important…
I want them to know that they can explore the world and come home to a safe place…. No matter what….
I tell them all the time that if they ever need… they should bring the garbage bags and tape…. I’ll bring the pigs…..
