Just recently found your channel and am really enjoying it 😊! I'm a real visual learner and super appreciate watching repotting vids and seeing you make your supports and how to use them. 👍😁😉
Rick L., I'm about to break the bottoms of my feet stomping in celebration for this lesson!!! You are answering my orchid prayer with this one. This is a PERFECT lesson on bending the wire to sit more to the center of the pot. I got it! For those of us who are visual learners, you are amazing. (I laughed at you when you said, "It's not very exciting. I know.") Remember, I am one of those followers that asked you to pot a bag baby. If I could send you a pound cake for all you have taught me, I would. I treasure your enthusiasm and love of orchids. You are more humble and qualified to teach this subject as anyone I have come to follow, and YOU ARE AN EXPERT EDUCATOR! Everyone sharing on UA-cam cannot teach lessons as thoroughly as you, sir, and those of us following your channel know it. Thank you again. God bless you, my orchid teacher. Date: April 15, 2018

Rick, I believe in the love of God and that His love flows from hearts filled with His Holy Spirit binding us together. I don't need to see your face to see the goodness in your heart put there through your acceptance of the grace of God. Don’t ever think you’re boring us with any video! We just like hanging out with you while you are caring for your orchids 💕 Thank you for taking the time to setup your camera and share what you’re doing. Also, I LOVE hearing the birds chirping outside 😍 I have a pair of blue jays and woodpeckers that have setup their nests near my house so I get to enjoy their chirping while I’m outside with my orchids. It’s lovely!
@@carpediem.9 i love Rick's videos... I always learn something and I watch many of them over and over again especially when he's talking about nutrients and mobile and immobile things it's really helped my UA-cam channel to help more people with their orchids another plants and it's helped me with my houseplants understand things better. He's helped me keep alive almost 50 orchids now in just a couple years
What an absolute great way to make your own clips, and ring stakes to help secure plants. I saw a demonstration at our orchid society meeting and now I can follow along with your video and stop to assure I am making it fit the pot snuggly while bending the wire with pliers.
Repot videos never get old. Every time I see a new one on UA-cam it makes me happy. This was awesome. I think I have said it before, but I also enjoy watching how masterfully you work with wire as well. I keep learning from you and keep getting inspired by you. Thanks for sharing!
I pondered that wire, at Lowe's today. Guess I'm going to have to get brave and tackle it. bought lava rock today. Thank you again for an awesome video.
Excellent video And the wire support instruction was great! Thank you for sharing your wire support info and the detailed video. Rick L. Orchids Rick to help me keep the weight of the pots down, I’m using mid and coarse charcoal then lava rocks on top to keep charcoal in place. Did my first wire set up like your video, definitely not pretty however it’s a start! Ended up creating a “cage” using bamboo thru holes on sides of the pot to anchor the bag baby in place for the next year till she takes over on her own. Wow that media was crappy crap crap! I can’t believe that plant lived through all that salt. I’m glad you did a repot video. I was curious to see what the media was like. I wanted to see how much old moss was on the dendrobium.
........wasnt as bad as I thought.......roots were better than expected, but had I left it for a few weeks......may have been worse..the salt build up......was worse than the old bark.....
Tks your potting videos much better than others. The leaves look good so I bet in no time you will have them looking as good as the other ones you bought on your other trip to Lowes. How are the plants in white driveway gravel doing.
.....thank you Willa, very sweet.....the Den. Speciosum is putting out roots.......all over the old bulbs and canes........very good sign, will update soon....
Hi Rick. Thanks for the video and so happy seeing you’re doing what you enjoy so much. I’ve often thought about using steel wire too but wonder if the rust that will eventually develope, will that affect the media or the plant ?
Great video! Rick I have a question about fertilizing an orchid when the orchid is in spike, and eventually bud. Do you stay way from fertilizing orchids when they are in spike, bud and flower? I have heard different things on this topic on UA-cam. I think this would be a great video for you! I would love to get your 2 cents on this. Thanks! And keep up your videos! They have really help me and my orchids!
thank you Lorena......I definitely feed my orchids while in bloom or spiking........every millimeter of that spike has to have calcium to grow......every petal needs calcium.....they cant get that from reserves...it has to be given to them....wonderful question....
I've only been working with orchids for 2 years and I have almost 50 just started to collect some Bag babies. I feed mine every time I water them which is about once a week more or less depending on how much sun they've gotten in my East window or what I'm doing. I do know we've had a lot of sunshine lately and they're drying out faster so I should be doing it about every 5 days instead of weekly. The air conditioner caused many of my phalaenopsis that I was just getting ready to take outside to bloom. And I don't want the blooms to get blasted by the bees of course I haven't seen many pollinators if my neighborhood which is sad
its steel 12ga wire, used for tying ceiling grid up....but it is easy to bend......I can sit down and make up 10 clips in a few minutes...I stopped using rhizome clips and get faster root growth with new plants using these clips....and it keeps them much neater...I agree,.....I love the Cattleya's....but they can be some wild rambling growers, upright wires help keep them in order.....jmo......I have less accidental broken growths as well.........I use one in every pot.....
You’re the man...such a superior anchoring technique. I’m having a lot of success with orchids thanks to your videos. I’ve built miles of fence with 12.5 g hi tensile wire. It is very difficult to work with, we fabricate small still rods flattened a the end and hole drilled through. Gives leverage and allows one to do twists when terminating. So it looked like you had super human strength! Some of my staff really struggle bending that wire and it’ll blind you in a heartbeat. The wire you’re using is clearly more malleable. Gotta get me some. Thanks so much for your videos rick. These plants give me so much pleasure.
This was great! Gives good support. I’m not good at wiring so here comes the question. What kind of wire is that you are using please? I’ve potted some that really need that. I feel stupid asking this question but got to great idea 💡 😀
…….all questions are great...….I use ceiling wire...……..its used for hanging acoustical ceiling grid frames with.....its usually 16ga.....and I get it at Lowes or Home Depot...….in the acoustical ceiling department.
Rick, I have not ever seen a repotting video done like this and it is a great way. I never thought of staking plants this way. Yet again I am new as well. Will this work for orchiata bark? Or not heavy enough?
yes, ........matter of fact this is made for that......anchoring makes a huge difference in starting roots......you can always put a layer of rock in the bottom for ballast.......bark on top
I don't have my orchids anchored with a stake and I think that might be why I don't get the root growth that Rick has on his orchids. I think he said that when the plant is in stable it damages the roots so I need to make a lot of these
Hi Rick. Great videos. Can you tell me about your choice of lava rock vs river rock vs gravel? Is it air/water ratio? Plant specific? Also, any medium suggestions for repotting my new den. Microchip x Norman byense? Thank you!
.......great question.....the larger the stone size the more air flow and the quicker it dries.....the smaller the less air flow and it stays damp longer.....example:....my oncidiums that like more moisture and dont like to dry out very much.....do better in a smaller pea gravel vs larger river rock.....lava rock is more porous and will soak up some water.....like a clay pot will, it will retain moisture more, and work great for almost all orchids.........I even mix the media up and it with some...works even better.......
Also quick question, sorry if I missed it - at the end of the video you said you were going to spray the orchid with something and keep it in isolation for a bit. What do you spray with?
.....i want to make sure they dont carry any critters in with them....so since they are new, I use Bayer "Imidicloprid" on them, very good systemic, kills on contact and has a 3 month residual...
......sounds like Im being smart Mary.......but when they need it.....the smaller the stone the longer the pot stays moist......most of the larger pots get watered weekly.....the rest every 4-5 days........
Hi, Great watching your videos! I do not have access to lava rock -- can I use Leca clay beads in the same way you use lava rock? I live in South Africa in the summer rainfall area with summer temperatures 15 -35deg C and winter temps 8 - 28deg C Lots of sunlight summer and winter. My grow area is a shade house with a polycarbonate roof (protection from frost and hail) Your advise would be most appreciated.
.....yes you can...Lecca absorbs moisture very well, so it works great for that.....because its very absorbent....it also absorbs salts, excess nutrients....etc........just be sure to keep it flushed well.....
Thanks for your reply --- I have started by re-pottiing a Dendrobium Nobile , to see how that manages and also an Epidendrum . I used a mix of large and small size beads because of the fine roots. I was surprised to see how much easier it was to repot with this media compared to the bark that I have been using. Later I will try with other orchids.
Watches videos and if it rains he's out fertilizing them again or at least giving them foliar feeding. One thing about the inorganic material he's using it doesn't hang on to nutrients so he can fertilize every day if he wanted to
Hello Rick, You mixed up the platform uniquely enough to make this 'Re-Potting Video' different from all the rest and it was enjoyable to view. Where do you obtain your aluminum wires? Keep up the good work sir!
thanks John.....the wire is from Home Depot.....its 12ga. steel wire.........sold in the acoustical ceiling section.......its used for hanging ceiling grid......still bendable, but strong for staking....
I live in New South Wales in Australia which is Intermediate Temp. I was wondering don't you find that putting it in a clay pot with only Lava Rock that is dries up too quick???
great question Sue..........yes and no......with inert media you can control the moisture..........when I water I let them soak.......they wont need water for another 5-6 days.....depending on the size of the pot and stone...
Rick lives in a dry climate even though he lives in Alabama you think it would be hot and humid but it's hot and dry as he said. He Waters his orchids quite often by soaking them as you probably already know from watching his videos. Sometimes he even lets them soak overnight. I think he has like two plastic Tucker totes or plastic boxes that he soaks them in
@@rickl.orchids thank you. Never heard that term before. I ended up seeing you work on a bag baby in a UA-cam layer after I dropped you that question. I felt kind of dumb. Good things bad things ways they can improve. And I did that throughout my teaching career it's like once you learn something that's a great idea do incorporated into your life. Rick has incorporated many things into my knowledge that I pass on on my channel. Rick is a great teacher an educator because he's a lifelong learner and keeps learning more and more about his orchids. I have about 50 orchids and started a UA-cam channel about my orchids and houseplants because a lady Carolyn who I watch her UA-cam videos suggested I start a UA-cam channel so I could share my successes and failures with her. Her husband's name is Jack and her name is Carolyn so they combine the two names so her channels name is Jacqueline spelled with an O and it's Jacqueline's orchids. I used the microphone on my cell phone keyboard so that's why I didn't print it out spelled correctly. She's a sweet lady. She's helped me a lot then I found Rick and he's helped me a lot. She lives in a climate just like Rick's in Canada Salmon Arm Canada Dry and hot

I like your style to take care of orchid
How long we waiting that orchid to bloom ....?
Thomas....great question.......the wire will rust lightly over a year.......but the roots grow right over it........no ill effects at all.....
Rick L. Orchids Thank you Rick !!!
Hoping you don't get hit too hard by the storms rolling in like is expected here in Huntsville. Good luck
we are watching them approaching......be safe......
Rick L. Orchids you too
I like that metal mount Rick. I assume that is aluminum? I need to make some of those, as cattleyas can become beastly to anchor down!
its steel 12ga wire, used for tying ceiling grid up....but it is easy to bend......I can sit down and make up 10 clips in a few minutes...I stopped using rhizome clips and get faster root growth with new plants using these clips....and it keeps them much neater...I agree,.....I love the Cattleya's....but they can be some wild rambling growers, upright wires help keep them in order.....jmo......I have less accidental broken growths as well.........I use one in every pot.....
Thank you lots! 🌹
I think he said that when the plant is in stable it damages the roots so I need to make a lot of these
Good morning, how long it’s take to have some flowers 🌸?
........there are many blooming at this moment.....
Really cool, I never use inorganic media. What should I try that on? The wire support is a great idea. Thanks Rick
I grow all my orchids in inert media.....lava rock, pea gravel, river rock.....thanks
Rick L. Orchids
Makes sense. Thanks!
Rick L. Orchids ah, interesting. Thanks so much for the information 🌸🌱
Do you use a covered wire to tie those leaves up?
usually I use plant tie wire .....its covered in a green paper like product.......
Great job! How often do you water cattleya in lava rock?
......sounds like Im being smart Mary.......but when they need it.....the smaller the stone the longer the pot stays moist......most of the larger pots get watered weekly.....the rest every 4-5 days........
What media do you use for your semi terrestrial orchids? I have Cymbidiums, Paphs, Zygopetalum
How often you fertilize mine is every 2 weeks lots OF calmag epsom potassium nitrogen potash etc
.....I water several times a week and they get fed with every watering.....I feed small traces ….and feed them often...….as in nature
Watches videos and if it rains he's out fertilizing them again or at least giving them foliar feeding. One thing about the inorganic material he's using it doesn't hang on to nutrients so he can fertilize every day if he wanted to
How does putting a wire in the bottom of the pot hold the actual pot up? It's not even connected!?
Hello Rick, You mixed up the platform uniquely enough to make this 'Re-Potting Video' different from all the rest and it was enjoyable to view. Where do you obtain your aluminum wires? Keep up the good work sir!
thanks John.....the wire is from Home Depot.....its 12ga. steel wire.........sold in the acoustical ceiling section.......its used for hanging ceiling grid......still bendable, but strong for staking....
Thanks!
Thanks Ricky
Can you replant the little one instead you get rid of it?
I did..........more of an experiment to see if I can trigger growth .......
I think he has like two plastic Tucker totes or plastic boxes that he soaks them in
Hi Rick
When you say you purchased a bag baby orchid, what does that term mean? Thank you in advance. JoAnn
...JoAnn......bag babies are the orchids that are sold in small bags at Lowes, Home Depot, etc......most are young seedlings.
@@rickl.orchids thank you. Never heard that term before. I ended up seeing you work on a bag baby in a UA-cam layer after I dropped you that question. I felt kind of dumb. But appreciated your time in answering me. Hope both you and Jan are doing ok. I find my orchids are therapy for me as well. I have pulmonary fibrosis (lung) and an auto immune disease. I am not real mobile all the time but in a good breathing space for now. About 4 years in my journey. Bye for now. JoAnn
MyLowe's got some in bad babies that is and they had been there about a month and only a few have been sold. So ask the manager if I could have a discount because some of them look kind of bad and instead of paying almost $15 for each one I only paid five never hurts to ask
@@joannhellenbrand6825 I hope you are doing well I just started with orchids two years ago and now have almost 50. Along with a couple hundred houseplants. I have a UA-cam channel if you'd like to watch some videos just click on the K in the circle and you'll find my Channel. Or put my name Kathleen Murphy and the word orchids houseplants spider plants begonias excetera into the search engine and you'll find me. I've tried to pass on the wonderful information that Rick has taught all of us about mobile and immobile nutrients and all the other great things two others on my channel. I don't have many subscribers almost 300 so I try to answer every question because that's what I was taught from my great teacher Rick! As a teacher for 32 years in a substitute for about 13 I learned from my cooperating teacher when I was a student teacher to have a conference with my students about their grades. I hope God gives him sometime back with all of us but it's a year since he posted so I'm sure his wife Jan is taking good care of him and may God bless them and give them strength
Kathleen Murphy hello thanks unfortunately we don’t have a Lowe’s. But I have asked to reduce some of the prices on some wilted one before.
I appreciate How you ger back to ME thanks again
Soggy media and Catt roots do not go well together - now they've got some air and should take off soon.
thanks Roger......
What’s a bag baby?
small orchids sold in plastic bags.....
Paul I’ve wondered the same thing; I’ve never seen a ‘bag baby’.
👍🏽👏🏼
To many lava rocks
My Place OF phal is in My room controlled temp humidity And a TOP fan for air circulation I a.m ok excep My medium for 60 orchid is not that good
I have about 50 orchids and started a UA-cam channel about my orchids and houseplants because a lady Carolyn who I watch her UA-cam videos suggested I start a UA-cam channel so I could share my successes and failures with her.
I feel sorry for the Orchid you threw away! Couldn't you have planted it anyhow and giving it a chance! I guess everybody's going to laugh at me that knows all about these orchids but I always give every little stem with my houseplants a chance and if they die they die
