I went to Lowe’s today and bought lava rock to try for one of my cattleyas. Washed the lava rock until clear, soaked and cleaned the orchid, made a wire post ( that took some effort, ha!) and potted it. I like the looks of it and will be anxious to see how she does. Thank you for sharing this media idea!
How are you Rick and Jan.? Hope all is fine You &Jan are Always(everyday) in my prayers. I’m reporting my mature cattleya for the first time ...very scared. After watching your video it gives me confidence to do it. But am using a clear plastic container and made lots of holes....love to see all the root grow, less over watering too. Also I’m using lava rock too. I Wish I send you the pic , see I’m doing right. Thanks again and again for your video...so such info as always. Thank you from bottom of my heart. Dearest friend.😘 Love the background music too.😊😊👋take care God Bless
thanks for the blessings Mary..........on a side note.......if you have trouble keeping it moist enough.....repot into a clay pot......the clay helps keep them moist in lave rock......let me know how its doing for you.......
Rick L. Orchids Thanks again😉😊 I did this morning. Putting piece of screen too... almost what you did except no music in background😎.But your music taste😉. Thank you so much My Dearest friend. God Bless you always....& of course to Jan😘
Rick- I really enjoy watching you work on your plants, actually I watch your video everyday. Cattleya and most of orchids here are grown in coconut coir and they let the roots grow straight more than 12 inches downward. I found it is not easy to water plants until they are wet. This video is very useful to me, I will repot Cattleyas in the rocks as you showed how to do. Thank you!
Really nice root growth on this orchid. Like that you use the inorganic medium for your orchids. I'm experimenting with leca with mine. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks.
I had to laugh when you said..."it's going to be an aggressive grower..." Aren't all of your orchids aggressive growers? ;-) Did all those new roots grow in just TWO weeks? Amazing! I bet this time next year it will need a bigger pot! :) Your workshop is so nice for transplanting, with the soothing music in the background... Putting that screen material in the bottom of the pot is a great tip. Wish I had thought of that before I transplanted my cymbidium!
I never thought about the ties being on a roll..I was at Dollar Tree today and was very surprised to see the pkg of this hanging on garden rack..so I bought 2 packs of 2 reels. Reels are smaller than yours but I figured get them while you see them..lol and tks for the idea!
Love your videos. I think I will have to make some of your wire supports. They look really great and I love your snail deterrent. Something so simple but effective. Thanks for sharing
thanks Patricia..........its the little things that add up... and over time make big differences.....those clips are great for all the new growths and spikes down the road
I get it already. Am sher I can do all your wire work without a video at this point. I still liked the video to try and help get it to the eyes that do need it.I haven't made any yet but I can see how much more useful it is compared to the wood stake.
Can not share photos of my beauties roots after watching you. I don’t know how. But after deflasking seedlings into so harsh stuff as lots might say, and seeing them root is enough for me. I live in Melbourne Australia pfffffff they live in my bedroom. You’d love to see my millennium magic. 11 buds. Thank you. Ps my magic witchcraft is going to bloom for my gorgeous dad who passed away. I will never forget him.
I love that I’m not the only one who always puts way too much of the potting medium in the pot before I even bring the plant over to it then have to take like half of the potting medium back out just to fit the plant in
Hi Rick, I,m so happy find your video. That so useful and a lot of thing I can learned about it. Pls, keep make a good video all about Orchids. Are you live in Florida? I love all your orchids, they are so healthy. I live in LA, do you think I can grow my orchids with larva rock? Because in my country Indonesia, they grow orchids with bricks and they so healthy. I know Indonesia is tropical and LA so dry. Thank you so much, happy growing and God bless you
thanks Jesse.....and God bless you as well.....yes you can grow them in lava.....or bricks are cheap too......5 minutes with a hammer and your ready to grow.....Im in mid Alabama......
great question Shirley.......I will leave it alone for a few days to let the roots heal over, after being bumped and banged......less chance of infection.....
.....it doesn't effect PH …..it doesn't break down and rot ......it cant be overwatered …...it wont hold onto nutrients ......you never have to repot.......unless they out grow the pot .....you can collect your own........its cheap ......your plants wont be top heavy and fall over .......it forces you to learn nutrients .......never needs flushing. ......etc .......etc
Hey Rick, another extremely enjoyable installment....I don't know what to call the relaxing quality you bring to everything you share with us....maybe it's because I share my days with 3 people under 12 years old? You know? Three voices coming at me at once, usually, you know? Just sayin'...love your channel. Btw, I checked out Pipien orchids...that is eye opening...it seems like these orchids will just about grow well in anything...I appreciate them more and more!
thank you......lol....3 under 12....wow, .....I bet you seek out calm.....lol.....Pipien is a great grower, and her style is very eye opening, these plants want to grow.....we just need to let them.....
…….I would leave them if possible......the plant will either ignore the damage or could reabsorb them if they are damaged bad......its better if they can be allowed to absorb them before removing...….once they are absorbed the plant will detach them and drop them off.....
Hello dear friend, because of you I can sure whip out pot clips and hangers in seconds flat! 😆 I am debating on repotting the one I rescued in the same type of pot cause the same issue top heavy, and it’s got roots coming out every hole. I didn’t know if it was too early in its recovery to repot, any suggestions?
...wonderful, Paula, they are easy to make, and really help.....if they are growing well or not.......repot.....it will make up for it fast, growing season is upon us...
I am going to have to find some of that wire, but I am guessing it will take me longer to fashion the clips than it takes you. You make it look so easy... :) When you pot in just coarse lava rock like that, how often do you water?
Judith....the 1st clip will take you a few minutes....after several......you will be as fast as I am........depending on the plant.....they get watered 1x week.....smaller ones a bit more.....
May I ask. Do you prefer the lava rocks or the river rocks? I'm asking because i have a whole bag of the river ones but if you think the lava rocks are better I'll go get those.
I use both........I will choose lava over river rock, if I think the plant needs more moisture, the lava will retain a little water where the river rock, wont absorb any, I still use all of them.....pea gravel, river rock, lava......
hey Denise.......regular window screen.......just something to block them from setting up house in the bottom of the pots...this was that silver galvanized mesh.
…….hard to answer......I can water them everyday if I want...……..but they can go 5-6 days with out easy …….in stone media they don't ever get to wet.....
@@rickl.orchids nice i just changed all of my orchids to lava rocks did not now how easy and clean this was going to be i will do just that , thank you so so much ,
sorry rick we so not use that wire indication here in the EU but what is the aize in mm cause i see th length also in meters ran he vid bqck qnd fwds several tims to read the label;)
....lol......Ill be 58 in another month.......I turned the radio on and stopped on the first station......never thought about it....after I listened to the video, I realized it was Tommy Dorsey....lol.....love the music, but no we are not that old.......lol
I could sit and watch you all day making clips. ..
thanks Deb.......your so sweet.
Me too
Appreciate you Mr. Rick L.💕 Found out from Miss Paula that you read old comments occasionally.. 😊
......anytime I feel down with daily struggles......the comments pick me up and give me so much joy and strength.......Paula is such a kind soul...

You are such an AWESOME grower, Rick, that I didn't even blink an eye when you said 2 WEEKS! :)
Beautifully potted. Thanks for sharing.

Wowww! Really enjoyed watching. New Subscriber! Would like to try using these pots for my potted cattleyas.
Welcome........
Now that the plant is repotted, will you leave it alone without water for a few days, or will you water it immediately?
great question Shirley.......I will leave it alone for a few days to let the roots heal over, after being bumped and banged......less chance of infection.....
Is there a reason why you didn’t prune off the dead roots? Is it because it provides the plant with stability?
Please Rick please tell about the advantage of potting in rock
.....it doesn't effect PH
…..it doesn't break down and rot
......it cant be overwatered
…...it wont hold onto nutrients
......you never have to repot.......unless they out grow the pot
.....you can collect your own........its cheap

update coming soon.
Why do you use river rock in one and lava rock in another pot?

HOW MANY TIMES PER WEEK DO YOU WATER WITH JUST LAVA ROCKS.
…….hard to answer......I can water them everyday if I want...……..but they can go 5-6 days with out easy …….in stone media they don't ever get to wet.....
@@rickl.orchids nice i just changed all of my orchids to lava rocks did not now how easy and clean this was going to be i will do just that , thank you so so much ,
How you water your orchids, you soak them or just put water from the top ???
I just soak them.......let them sit and soak.........once they are back outside I will spray them more...
Hi Rick, have you found a place to purchase clay pots with side holes, or did you drill those yourself? Thanks for your videos.
I have drilled some of mine......unglazed holey pots are hard to find..…….I use azalea pots from Home Depot or Lowes....
sorry rick we so not use that wire indication here in the EU but what is the aize in mm cause i see th length also in meters ran he vid bqck qnd fwds several tims to read the label;)
Willem Heitlager I looked it up and 12g is 2.06mm. Ive got to get some of that. My dendrobium orchids and very unstable.
