Great video! I enjoyed the discussion at the end about which plant would need more...the fast grower or slow...the one in cold area or warm...amazing or thought process over reality.... God had blessed all of us with your wisdom! Thank you for sharing....and i am going to look up the research linked
Hi Rick, thanks so much for the info and links to read. The one on Potassium was very interesting. The difference in bark and moss is something I had no idea about. I am learning so much. You have opened up my eyes to a whole new way of growing successfully. I always wanted to grow the plants the best I could, but without the correct information, the success rate is well, just ok. You are doing a great service to those of us who strive to grow orchids as best as we can. I was wondering what kind of potassium you recommend. Nitrate - citrate - chloride - etc. Thanks Rick for all your help.
thanks Susan......your great questions help me as well......P. Nitrate is very common, and has a great nitrogen ration with the K....its derived from P Chloride, most of the differences are... if they are made with multiple macro or micro nutrients and the water solubility of them.......they all work due to chelated factors.....but some are better than others.......prefer Potassium Nitrate
Maybe one day, but for now I use tapwater, apply roughly what it says on the bottle and supply cal mag ph adjusted. Plants are responding well and is good enough for me. Mind you I also have a veggie patch, extensive front and back garden, and other inside plants to take care of. Thanks for info anyways.
would have been nice to see the repotting of the cymbidium Rick.. as you know i have a few still in the bark media... and would love to move them a bit worried about upsetting them and setting them bark... can you show more on them please or a repotting...many thanks....
I need to re-pot the cymbidium.....i can show it, .....I have only one, its growing well,.....with spring coming, should be perfect time...thanks Chris
Hi Rick another great video, congrads, - speaking of run off with my Phals, I have a ODD MIND SET, my question will be - are there any FAULTS in my thought process. Phals have a spongy outer cover on roots that holds the moisture, that spongy outer skin then over time dry's. I feed my Phals allow to soak, drain well, THEN I FLUSH them with plain water. WHY you may ask, my reasoning tells me they have absorbed the nutrients, I don't see leaving those additives to also dry on the roots or build up in the media and cause problems, burning, root rot, fungus what ever, that's why I flush them to wash out any excess that may dry and cause problems. No one else seems to do this. I definitely don't like salt water, or chlorine from a pool left on my skin to dry - WHAT DO YOU THINK.
Rick thank you. I guess I was wondering because once a week I let mine soak and just wondering if I should be testing the number. Please post the links!! Lol I love this stuff! Thank you again! Have a great evening and thank you for filming
The reports sound very interesting and you know me info on phalaenopsis spikes will get me every time. There spikes confuse me. I still have one that's older then my channel but others have grown and been removed within the channels life. Very confusing but fascinating as well. I think I'll yaber about it more in tomorrow's video. If I get it out before midnight. Probably not but soon. You have got me thinking yet again I should know better then to watch your videos just befor bed by now.
Thank you Rick. Such an interesting talk and different hypothesis and angles that can affect life and growth. I see that you’re using the reference solution for your ph probe. I’m currently storing my meter with a bit of the solution in the cap. I tested the ppm of the solution and is a very “salty”. I think is needed to retain the salts in the glass bulb from leaching out. I’m noticing a much more stable reading since I’ve started this. I “do” rinse in tap or ro water before using probe to test specimen.
Thomas thats perfect.......rinse it in clean water after use and store it with solution in the cap.........keeps a more accurate reading and its always calibrated and ready to go........remember to store them upright......keeps moisture from getting into the electronics.....thanks for your comment.
Rick L. Orchids. Yup, the electronics are very sensitive to salt corrosion. The unit you have is fairly sealed with the o ring on the cap and I think internally is fairly sealed too. But the cheaper units perhaps isn’t a good idea to store with this solution in the cap -being the salt and especially the moisture might still migrate upwards.
Rick L. Orchids Hi Rick. Actually compared to everyone I’m still in diapers 🙈. I’ve been using Leca bread bought from ikea my favorite media so far because it’s very “airy” and have more control in the wet dry cycle.
Yes links please! Very interesting stuff! You are such an intelligent man! Yeah we are getting the winds today! Broke my flag pole now my flag is on the roof! Hope it stays there. Great video as always!
Hi Rick, I was just reading one of those university studies which was talking about a group of plants which were planted in a variety of media, the one finding that stood out to me was the plants growing in 1/3 charcoal experienced more growth....I am going to add charcoal to my mix...these studies are food for thought...if you do set up an email I'll send you the pdf file if you are interested, Rick. Cara
I agree with the finding......charcoal keeps organic media more staple......less chance of a large ph swing....lots of growers ( Pipin Orchids) use straight charcoal, ........her orchids are beautiful......thanks for the reminder.....
Hi Rick!, wow what a treat with all the recent videos! Your cymbidium look so healthy. Do you use the same nutrients for cymbidiums as you do for your other orchids?
.......that's the only Cymbidium I have ever had......so still learning. Im giving it about the same amount of feed as the other orchids, but until recently it hasnt been growing strong........doing much better now...thank you
…...split leaves.....on Phals?...…..split leaves on any orchid is usually from lack of consistent watering…….if they go thru several dry spells, they get split leaves..
I have a number of the orchid you are showing here. It has been in it's pot for 8 months now and has now grown. Took it out of pot - no roots, plant slowly dying and yellow. it is sitting on lava rock. I have taken it out and am saving the few pieces who have a couple of new roots growing. I have no idea of what is wrong. Also my Dendrobiums are trying to bloom but the flower stalk is wilting about 2 inches out. Can't find any pests. By now my orchids should flourish like yours are but instead they are dying. What am I doing wrong. They all look kind of sick.
Hi Rick, I was looking at your video and wondered if I could combine the cal mag and the seaweed together. They are both low in NPK each. Is there a problem in doing that? Thanks Steve.
Very informative video..great Job Rick.I Have a question here..all that you said would work on a healthy orchid with a great health roots system right?..otherwise the plant will not be able to get all those nutrients though.
Hi Rick, I like your videos very much, I have learned a lot from you. I’m from Hong Kong and my name is Vicky. Thank you very much. I would like to know if I combine both the cal mag and the seaweed, should the TDS be in the range of 150? How do I get the right TDS range? Thank you. Best regards, Vicky
........hello Vicky....I have combined them with out any issues......calmag I feed in the 50-85ppm range.....kelp or seaweed supplements dont add a lot to the total ppm #.....so more like teaspoon (5ml) per gallon......added together probably around 100-115ppm.......
Good morning Rick, it’s 6:00 AM here in Hong Kong, big surprise for me. You replied so soon 😍 thank you very much. I only can use tap water or buy bottled water I will do my best with my orchids and apply the things that I have learnt from you. 💃
I grow several of my Phalaenopses completely bare root in glass jars, Rick. I spray water/feed into the jar onto the roots when they need it, so up to 1cm of water sits at the bottom of the jar. If there's any left after several days I pour it away. They really do well in this setup, but aren't producing a lot of flowers. So I'll try adding extra calcium and magnesium as you do.
…..growing them bareroot is a great way to force yourself to learn nutrition...….adding the calmag and magnesium will really help......keep up the great work.
I keep some Phalaenopsis orchids in tall water vases. Easy care - just change filter water very 2-3 weeks . Some of my Phalaenopsis start new flowers. 🌺 🌸
I use it about every 2 weeks....usually as one of the foliar feeds, or a soak.......about 1/2 tsp per gallon.....it really triggers some great root growth, and flowering should be better this fall as well....
One of the stalks on my orchid plant is turning yellow. It's has a nice bud on it, so I'm not sure why it's dieing. I cut the stalks back to the nub that is turning yellow too. Any thoughts on what to do?
.......not with out seeing it......this is one reason i would love to get a email set up...flush your media.....and make sure your mix contains calcium...
......I dont measure mine every time........but after doing it for a long time I know mine is fine........until you get control and know what your ph is.......check it..
A bit off topic but I just transplanted my large Cymbidium into a black nursery pot, in lava rock. Looks just like yours, only bigger! Lots of new growths! I was wondering how often you water yours? If it doesn't rain? It's easier to determine when to water when you use inorganic media and a clay pot. Would love to read those reports that you mentioned! :)
mine has been outside for only a few days.....it just got rain on for 4 hrs.....flushed well...lol.......during the winter in the sun room.....every 10 days or so I watered it....I need to repot it, .....as soon as it gets warm....
Thank you, Rick. I'm glad I didn't put it in a clay pot - that thing is heavy with the lava rock! The nights are still chilly here so I've been carrying in and out each day. Who needs the gym, LOL!
I have a huge cymbindium to repot and I'm considering switching to lava rock after seeing this video. It's nearly impossible to remove the broken down bark from those massive, winding root systems and I want to switch from the heavy clay pot to lighter plastic. I've been putting it off because it's going to be a huge task. 🙈🌸
Hey my buddie Rick, I wish I was getting a wind storm because tomorrow we are due for a giant snow storm. I have had enough. ...I need to get my plants outside.... I need to replace the plants that I lost and another cymbidium ...I lost the only one I had because I went away.LLK
I love Zygopetalum- Dendrobium-
easy care - bright lights- beautiful 🌸 🌺 .
New flowers in Spring .

Thank you for all this information. I am learning so much from your videos. All my orchids have lots of new roots now ❤
thank you Karen..........very happy for you.
Rick,Rick,Rick I have a new root growing on my orchid!!!! Your a great teacher!!!
another great video. Lots to take away and think about. Thanks for sharing.

Rick 1st test CA MAG---- 1 teas in RO (14 ppm)in gallon ==== 0252--- Good start thanks john
....1 tsp in R/O =252 ppm.....sounds about right......little high for orchids in my opinion......try 1/4tsp per gallon...but yes.....good start

Good discussion.
The next nutrients video you make, can you talk more about the liquid seaweed please? Thanks 😀
...been meaning to for a long time......its coming.
Knowing the Run off would only be valuable if you could quantify the actual elements that are coming out
.......another one understands it.....great point,...to many variables that can influence the contents..

Rick L. Orchids Thanks a lot.
Rick L. Orchids Do you mix it together with Nitrogen, etc? Or do you use it alone?
I prefer to use it alone .....never had any issues but...its easier to tell if you get a reaction..... what caused it with less ingredients.....
Great answers too Ricky! Excellent and thanks for the links too!😊

i watered 40 plants last week, i started with 180 tdi and 6.2 ph.. after 40 plants the water contained 201 tdi and 6.3 ph..
