Is this an elkhorn
The names “staghorn fern” and “elkhorn fern” are often used interchangeably, although those with thinner fronds are often called elkhorn ferns.......which I believe this one is.....
Please detail how you have this magnificent staghorn potted? I need to put ours in a larger hanging basket - moving from 14inch hanger to 20 inch i think. TIA
........Over the last 35 yrs....I just keep upgrading it into larger baskets, and used a mix of potting soil and orchid bark in it......The last basket was around 30" dia.........it was welded up from steel flat bar........mine was pushing 250lbs......so make sure its mount is strong enough....
I don't live in America but the UK, do you recommend using lecca beads with usual media for phals ?
......I prefer lava rock over Leca, but Leca, is fine to use for orchids....it can be mixed with bark or moss......Its important to realize.....Leca needs to be flushed often if its used....
Yay it’s always a great day to hear and learn from Rick!! 🎉
.......Thanks Melissa......
Question. When feeding just Cal-Mag and seaweed, what should my ppm numbers be? Should those numbers be different for summer and winter? Also when using Jack’s 5-12-26 alone, what should my ppm be?
Great questions......If I was just using calmag and kelp.....I would use 20ppm of calmag, and 5-6 drops of kelp in 1/2 gal water......regardless of winter or summer.... ..If your using just the Jacks like I do,... for a lower N and winter feed......I keep it around 100-125ppm.....you can go lower than that, if you like
@ Thank you. I need to make adjustments to my ppm numbers, I’ve stopped the 15-0-0 for winter. One week they get the 5-12-26, the next week they get the CalMag and seaweed. Should they need anything in between, they get plain RO water.
@@franricks1608 ....I think that sounds fine....In my 40+ orchids some are growing strong and a few are more dormant.....I feed accordingly

Beautiful orchids. Thanks for posting ❤
Beautiful orchid thanks ❤❤
Hey Rick and Jan, we are all busy moving our orchids indoors 😂 The worst part is the day length but soon day will restart growing back. It was nice to see how you've displayed your babies. They look happy ❤❤❤
Thank you my friend.....always good thoughts for you and your family.
Hi there! 👋 The Orchids are beautiful as always.
Thank you my friend!
Hi Rick, so glad to see this video. I always learn from you. I am new to orchids. I have dendrobium nobile and 1 phal. I still feed both with seaweed and Cal Mag mix. They seem very happy with excellent root growth. Should I stop feeding now that we have cooler nights, shorter days? I live in SW Florida….not sure if I can just keep feeding. I do feed weakly/weekly. Thank you for all your great information. It helps me tremendously!!
......great question....Keep feeding them, but cut the strength in 1/2....with cooler temps and less light they still grow but may not be growing as strong.......Everytime my orchids get water it contains nutrients.......if Im flushing them... I only add 20ppm of calmag,
@@rickl.orchidsThank you!! This helps me tremendously. Your response is so appreciated😊
@@gloriabischoff13 .........anytime, happy to help.
Good day Rick. Now that we have cooler temperatures and you have brought your orchids indoors, how often do you water and also fertilize? Thank you in advance for your response. The Britta suggestion is on target, thank you for that too.
....Glad to hear.....Im watering/feeding ... about once a week, ....after they have been fed 3x ......then they get flushed well.....Some of the orchids that are not showing signs of active growth, are not getting fed as often and those that are growing strong are getting fed more...My mounts and baskets get water about the same....Winter watering is easy,.... once you find a routine/schedule that works for both you and the orchids... ..I use a timer and soak plants for 20min, then swap them out....it only takes a few minutes to swap out plants.....Its one of my favorite times to look the orchids over, look for issues and check out their progress... ....I love to watch the new shoots, bulbs, leaves, and spikes grow, ....the more often I feed them..... the faster and bigger they grow, .....Watching the roots crawl all over the lava rock and across the mounts is one of the wonders of orchid growing..
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for all the interesting and practical information. As a beginner,I learn so much from you.😊😊😊
......thank you......please feel free to ask questions...
So happy seeing Your new vid ..!!! Your Knowledge is beyond You sharing that is priceless Thank YOU so much for guiding us to the next level🤗 Loads of Well Wishes from Europe to You and Yours 👍👍👍
such very kind words........thank you so much.
Hello Mr. Rick, good to hear from you and see your beautiful collection. 😍
Thank you my friend!
And do you supplement them with grow lights😊
Yes.......they have flourescent lights over them......4 bulbs in each fixture, 6500k bulbs very bright lights....
Hi Rick, how many hours do you get out of the south windows? Thanks
I get very good sun for 9-10 hrs a day......my lights are on for about 12hrs total....
Good evening Rick....really enjoyed this video.....your plants are looking fabulous. I also only get 5 months of the year where I can place the plants in the greenhouse, so for the rest of the year I'm having to cope with 160 plants indoors. Haven't seen any sun in this part of the UK for around 4 weeks so artificial light is what they are getting and they have to put up with the 4 rooms I am using as regards warmth or coolness. I have another bathroom which I have switched the heat off but unfortunately it faces due North so gets very little light......the temp varies between 7c and 14c so I have some of the draculas in there. One or two plants are doing OK but most seem to have shut down for the time being. The majority of the paphs are adapting to the lava but they are still lacking root growth......not much happening so I'll say thanks for your video and both of you keep well and take care, Ed.
your conditions are tough Ed.....I am amazed at what success you have with low temps and low light conditions......Artificial lighting would be a must......I think the Paphs will start better root growth when the upper growth gets larger,......I keep telling myself that winter solstice is right around the corner and the conditions will get better after that.....Hang in there my friend......
Hi Rick! Your plants sure are happy! I look forward to seeing your nadosa in bloom. I have to give you some credit to how well my orchids are doing from your advice, thank you! They are thriving! Hope you have a great weekend!
........you have a very green thumb my friend, but I apppreciate the kind words......Keep up the great work.......Hope your doing well!
Your plants are smiling, they are enjoying the beautiful light…. Light and good feed makes them grow! Beautiful collection ❤
Thanks EJ......I smile when ever I see your comments.....
Hi Rick! Always good to see new videos from you! Your indoor grow space looks awesome...noticed those Sogo Viviens looking wonderful. 😊 Those are a favorite of mine...I knew they would do well in your care. Blessings from East TN! 😇
Thanks Amy.......always a treat to see you here.
I’m so glad you’re back! I always look for your videos, thank you! I have a chantilly lace twinkle, have had her about a year and she is about to bloom for the very first time. I’m so excited, cannot wait! I only have phals and catts but I just got my first paph. Have no idea how to care for it so if you have advice please make a video about it! Also- what do you do for humidity when your orchids are inside? I live in a colder environment so the heater makes it pretty dry for 8 months a year.. Hope you are well!🙏
......I'll keep my fingers crossed you get a beautiful bloom cluster from your Cattleya.....Paphs are easy to grow, they are usually terrestrial, and like dappled light, moist conditions......many come from limestone outcroppings and do better with a higher ph media...they are even known as "Limeys"......If you use bark or moss,... add some dolomitic lime or some oyster shell to it......if they are happy they bloom alot.... .Im inside growing for 7 months myself.......I like to spray my plants with a spray bottle........it helps with humidity, ....with keeping the leaves clean and dust free, ...and most important, helps to keep spider mites, mealy bugs, etc from getting started......over the next few months, spray them a few times a day.....they will love it.
Good morning! Greetings from Miami🌴❤
Good morning as well.......Miami......I miss it so very much......I used to live off Brickel Bay....
Hello Rick … nice set up, and everything are just so happy in there as well…. Oh by the way. Remember I told you I will try to use Jack’s fertilizer last time? Well, I did spray them orchids and other plants twice since, and I can see the effect so fast. The orchids are now slowly growing a more beautiful green leaves…. Anyway, please extend my warmest regards to Jan. Stay safe and healthy y’all. 💞🤗
Hello my friend, glad to hear its working for them.....keep up the great work......best to you and hubby!
? Rick, my RLC cat leaves have turned soft not as rigid as when purchased 2 months ago. Repotted and put out roots 5-8 new roots, finished the growth that was there. But leaves are soft. I don't know could be wrong? Any suggestions.
......possibly hydration issue.....? hard to say with out seeing them.......are they getting nutrients still, calcium?
I have to bring in my orchid…I use grow lights also..We live in East Tennessee
......Thank you Kathy......we are in the same club.
Thank you so much for sharing the current status quo on your orchids! Always good to see you, amigo 🫶🏼I have had 3 new growths on my Dinard this year, all have a sheath but the conditions in the last 5 weeks have been horrendous here, so if I get lucky, at least one of the growths will bloom. Although the buds are now through the sheath, they are struggling to develop because of the conditions. Vamos a ver. I keep telling myself, as long as 'you live through the winter' we can try again next year. Wishing you a wonderful weekend and please, extend my regards to your wonderful camera lady ❤
Thanks Nina.....always good to see you here....
Hey Rick, great to hear you and see your update 😊! Looking forward to seeing those lovely blooms in few months. Thanks for sharing the care tips, much appreciated. Have a great weekend and happy growing 😂.
Thanks Mary.....you too....
My Catasetums haven't gone "dormant" for the last two years (could be three) and they get watered and fed every time the other plants get. I don't repot them or remove the old roots, which are still growing. One has had its leaves for over two years 😁
.....wow....love hearing of this type of growth....and how your doing it.......makes me think... alot of bad info out there...
@@rickl.orchids If they keep growing I keep feeding 😁
Alabama was (is) the deep south I can see the confusion 😁
Hi Rick, very healthy show there. 🌿🎉🌿 My vanda update...they don't like MSU fertilizer here in Arizona anyways. I was losing too many leaves (about one every two weeks 🥴) went back to better grow and no more leaf loss and its been almost two months now. I believe they weren't getting enough nitrogen since its a higher content 🤔 Any pointers...Thanks for your wealth of information as always.
Better-gro is a fine fertilizer......if I remember correctly,......its half ammoniacal and half nitrate nitrogen.......research has shown in very warm climates......ammoniacal can be beneficial and actually help the nitrate nitrogen be absorbed better.......you were observant and saw an issue.....well done.....MSU is also a fine fertilizer, but I think it needs a better calcium to nitrogen ratio........I had vandas before and they really responded to kelp/seaweed supplements.....
@rickl.orchids Oh yes, my vandas get seaweed extract every time I feed. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. We all learn so much from you and for that we are very grateful. 😇 Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🌿 😇
Hey Rick! Man look at those roots! Everyone is looking awesome. I really appreciate your feeding updates, they let me know I’m track with the Jacks. Looking forward to the next update. You guys take care!
Thank you my friend......Im behind in watching.......need to catch up.
Wow plants are looking great. And you sound strong and healthy for the most part. I know, my plants really enjoy sitting in front of those blines. Even with them completely closed, my phonopsis, seemed to do fairly well, thoughit might have been a little dark.
Thanks Victor.....
Not many flowers, maybe a bit too much sun, normally they get dappled sun light and some shade in a natural habitat .
everything looks great, rick! thanks for sharing...
Thank you my friend.
I continue to be amazed at how well they all grow in lava rock. Still want to try this but seems like a lot of extra work getting them watered more frequently?? Also, your B. nodosa is impressive! Mine is in a pot with bark and it just now after a year or so, squeaked out a bloom! Gotta try the mounting now for sure. And one other thing- you mentioned a pH of like 5.8 which seems low to me especially considering the research as well as all of your previous vids recommendations. Is this pH your new go-to number?
.......thank you......no extra work, actually easier......5.8 is the sweet spot for hydroponic growing.....and I have always said that......Research hasnt changed for hydroponic absorbtion ranges.....but...nutrients are being made so the ranges are not as important as they were... .I believe growers get confused with ph ranges because........you cant use soil nutrients with hydroponics.. .....But...you can use hydroponic nutrients in soil, and its works great....and you use a different ph range to go by......If you use hydroponic nutrients in soil, you use a soil ph range chart.....if you use the same nutrients in a hydroponic situation.......you use a hydroponic ph chart........Calcium is absorbable from 5.8 to 5.0....in hydroponics, but in soil its from 6.5-9.0......more important... let your ph swing up and down so they get a more varied diet and dont miss out on some macro or micro nutrients.
Thanks for the video Rick. Much appreciated as I live in an apartment in Vancouver, BC and have to grow my orchids indoors. It's either too much sun or too much cold. LOL. Do you use grow lights in winter - or do you get enough light from the windows? Thanks again.
.......I have flourescent lights over them.....they get great light thru the windows, but not enough....
@@rickl.orchids Thanks. That gives me hope.
6:26 Exactly the information I've been looking for. I recently picked several bag babies from Lowes clearance racks and they're all in fairly poor condition. At least they weren't crispy or mushy this time! 😂 I'll rig up a micro-climate for them and push them on. Thanks! Glad you and camera girl are back!
What a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
Hi Rick, I am so glad the teacher is back! You said you are only watering once a week. My plants, like yours, have all been switched to lava rock about 6 months ago and been moved inside from the greenhouse for the winter in Maine. They are all doing amazing. After about three days from watering they seem to be super dry. The humidity in the house is only about 40 - 45%. They appear to want water, but should I hold off until it's been about a week? Also, do you ever mist your plants between watering? Thanks, Dave
........great questions Dave.....dry air will pull moisture out.......When I water I let them sit and soak.....till the entire root mass, the media, the pot, etc is all saturated.........it stays damp for several days........then I let them stay dry for a few days.... and then I repeat......some I water more, some less.........some are new plants and dont have complete roots grown in to the pot.....they get water more often..........I have some that are more established in the pots with very good roots......They seem to not need it as often.....Look at your plants, water them if they look like they need it........you cant really water to much in lava......As for misting yes I do........it helps with humidity, it washes them off, removes dust, etc...one of the biggest benefits is it keeps mites,.. mealybugs.... etc. from starting...
do you still have the dendrobium speciosum
I do not have one.....
Oh wow! I love the mount for encyclia tampensis! It will take over that mount! I can't wait to watch it! 😂Your so welcome brother! I am just dying to see what you do with the catasetum. That's why I kept pushing to give them to ya! 😂 no more, I promise! Even though I forgot to send you 1! 😂 really look forward to see what you do with the catasetum. Everything is looking great! So much growth and so much roots! It's so beautiful! Big hugs for you and Jan! 😊
Thanks Paula......I love the Encyclia .....the catasetums are going to be a great research project.....Im looking forward to getting them to grow.....We'll talk soon......
Hi Rick! happy you are doing more videos, I do wanna ask you, how humid or dry do you keep the house? I have 25 - 35% I struggle with my mounted plants during the winter when the baseboard heat kicks in
....your not alone, I can understand.......right now we are 55-60% r/h.......it will get lower as we get into winter and the heat is on more.......I use a good mist with a spray bottle or even better..... keep a container with good water and 20ppm of calmag and few drops of kelp/seaweed...., and when ever you think of it......soak a few, the wood absorbing moisture is the best way to keep humidity around mounts......I love soaking my mounts.....You almost cant soak mounts enough....
Hi Rick. Thank you for sharing your grow space. I’m glad you mentioned kelp and seaweed. I stopped using it altogether because I was getting mold and mushroom spores in my pots. I guess I was adding way too much, ( a half teaspoon). Can it be used with cal-mag ? Blessings and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.🙏🏻🥰
good question......yes you can add it to calmag......I only use 6-7 drops in one gallon of water.......your dose doesnt sound excessive......mold spores, etc are all over they only grow when conditions are right for them....Mushroom spores would need a source......likely came with the bark, sometimes they take a while to sprout....Ive used kelp/seaweed products for 25+ years, its great stuff......not to be confused with fish fertilizers.........also good stuff, but not the same product and not for orchids.....
So great to see your collection again Rick. I have not been feeding my orchids as much since the daylight has gotten shorter. However, after listening to you, I probably should feed my orchids more. Several of mine have new growths right now. A question, do mounted cattleyas need continued fertilization during the winter months? I have three mature mounted cattleyas and they are showing some new root growth, but no new pseudobulbs. Thanks for sharing your video Rick.
.....great question James......My mounted Blue Diard is doing that.....just root growth, but nothing else.....I water it, but it gets reduced nutrients, less nitrogen..... .Winter solstice is Dec. 21.....the daylight gets longer, everyday after that........within 6-8 weeks the longer light will trigger hormones and the catts as other orchids,... will start new growths......At that point I start feeding them more and with a stronger nutrient mix.....any orchid thats showing good growth gets fed.....
@@rickl.orchids That makes perfect sense! Thanks for the guidance Rick. Have a great week, James
So glad to see your indoor set up. As usual, your plants are growing like crazy!
Thank you
How are they able to grow in lava rock? How do they hold onto moisture? I really admire you all who understand orchids and are able to grow them.
Thank you......Orchids are Epyphitic .....they grow on trees, with no soil or media around them,.......the lava rock is just something to hold them in the pot till they anchor themselves.....it could be Lego's even.......they get nutrition from the water/ fertilizer you give them.....like many things ......once you understand them, they are simple to grow
@ Thank you. Can I use LECA balls?
@@TheQueensWish .......yes, they will grow in many medias......
A friend recommended I keep the moss in new small orchids and fill in with lava rock. I've noticed one is loosing its beautiful leaves, should I take them out of moss? I purchased these for there leaves.
Hello Shirley....hard to say without seeing your setup and conditions.......I too will add a little moss on new plants that are growing new roots....nothing wrong with it...depends on the type of orchid, and its water requirements......Honestly......they dont need any media at all to grow....the media is just to hold them in the pots till they anchor themselves.......They just need water and a good feed routine.......the frequency of watering is dependent on ones set up and conditions.. ..Any orchid that is repotted or expected to grow roots needs a good supply of calcium around them and "consistent" supply of food and water.. ..If I get a new orchid with decent roots, and Im going to take it from bark or moss and place it in lava rock.......after I repot it, I will water it often,... with reduced nutrients..... but more importantly, .... I"ll make sure it has calcium around it...I have taken many half dead neglected orchids and got them growing well with doing that....From rootless divisions to flask seedlings......all respond to that treatment
I’ll be in enterprise , AL to visit in-laws for thanksgiving as we do every year. Can’t wait. As always love the setup it’s just starting to hit 60s here central fl at night. Next week is 40s. 🥶
safe travels for you and your family.....have a great holiday!
