Hi, I have a question about my budgie, he is perfectly fine and perches on my hand to eat and seems comfortable around me he chirps and sings all day long in and out of his cage but whenever I try to get him to hop to my hand with millet he seems uninterested. I've tried when he is hungry and still nothing. Anything else I can try?
Hi my budgie comes to my hand and perches everytime to eat the millet spray, but any slight movement it panics and gets scared .. How do I move around my hand while budgies are perching on my finger.? Many Thanks.
+aquascape101 if you are feeding your bird outside of the cage, I would start inside, just to keep it from being scared about the environment. Then you can work on making perching more challenging, as your bird becomes comfortable. It does take some time. You can also ask your bird to perch and wait a moment before giving millet, to include a time element in the training.
aquascape101 what I did was clip its wings that's a great way to get your budgie to be trained you could do it at a local pet store and vet... I also got my parrot used to me by keep doing it daily and treat them every time they don't panic
I have a cockatiel named Sophie. Sophie won't step up on my finger but yet if I try to leave the room she'll fly to me. She hates when I go near her belly but she loves her neck and upper back being scratched. I have had her for 2 years and she is an amazing bird. But no matter what she just won't step up onto my finger. Do you have any tips?
+Eduardo Rivera Try hand feeding millet at meal times (and only give it when working with your bird). That will help your bird bond with you. Also, be very soft, gentle and patient when handling; especially at first :-).
Try socializing with your bird every day for about 10 minutes. You can read to it, sing, talk, put your hand on its cage and putting his/her cage in a place where you often spend you time. Once you do that for about a week or more try to open his/her cage and simply lay your hand on a nearby toy. The budgie will most expectantly avoid your hand and scoot away but that is completely normal. Do that for about 3 days. After all of this, your budgie will start to realize your not a threat and you are going to be around often. Wait about a day for the next step. Now get some treats or his/her favorite food and try to offer it to it. If he/she takes it and takes it to another place to eat it that is a big step up. If it takes it and eats it in front of you that is also great progress. If they don’t take it at all don’t be worried. This is also very normal. Instead, but is on or in a place they hand out or in their food bowl. Do this often until your budgie begins to get used to it. This can take up to a week or more. By this point your budgie will see you as a friend and not a threat. They may even step onto your finger!
If your bird scared of u then don't put your hand in the cage for 5 days keep the food and water correctly then on the 6th day you can give food in your hand to the bird
blupper aj No, Siri and Soma's wings are not clipped. Since a good bird clip will still allow birds to fly a short distance, you can have a clipped bird come at very close range!
I must do this all over again,My Couple was Very afraid with Hard Firework ( it's was almost like Very Hard Kanon bombs and Very Very Loud ) I hate it that the People who where doing this it was to Close by my window .I try this again to Hand Taim then and also to Fly Again to me. it's getting a Longer time to teach this and also people are going thouch them and talking to loud or do things to fast and then they are also afraid. I let them know / now this and they get it at this moment. Can anyone Help me how to go Futher and a Little faster for them !! Thank You for Helping Me and wan't that they fly like this again ,they are doing this it's diffrent the Earlyer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! I'm thinking of buying 2 lovebirds. But I don't want them flying around( I think it's not safe and my room is really big) plus I don't wanna clip their wings too! Help!
i see that a lot of budgies kinda stand in a (about) 60 degree andre then kinda turn (without moving their feet) 120 degree, kinda from a left profile to right profile view almost all the time, is that just to get a better view at what they're looking at, or just for shits and giggls/unknown reason? :P
Hello, how many days do you do step one before you do step 2? My budgie is very cooperative on step 1, but on step 2, I can't seem to find the right length my budgie to get on my hand and eat off the millet
Train when your birds are most hungry (early morning and late afternoon might work for you). Also, reserve the training treat (millet is great) only for training sessions, so they really crave it. Also, ensure your birds have a solid "step up" so there are no issues with them being on your hand. Let me know how it's working!
if I were you I would keep your cat away from the bird cage at all times because cats will knock the bird cage off the table to get at the birds. its their instint to get birds. when I was young kid we had a cat and bird at the same time and one night the cat knocked the bird cage off the top oof the refridgerator trying to get the bird. that was a lesson i never forgot. hope nothing happens to your beautiful birds very traumatic for the birds.
Hi im lacey and I got my bird a day ago and she knows the step up command but she still bites and she eats but dosnt drink and shes not playing with her toys
The fact that u put a treat in ur hand to get the parakeet to fly to u doesn't make sense to me. Because the parakeet is coming for the food/treat, not u....
Swamprat My parakeets are unclipped, but I looked it up and found out it can take months, depending on the amount of molting it does (when the bird sheds feathers and grows new ones).
I tried to teach then "fly to me" with the same snack you used in this video , they just fly to me from the cage to my finger, but when they are out of the cage, they wont fly to me@_@ I think this is a good start.... the most interesting thing is, I say "fly to me", when they come out of the cage, they will sing "fly to me"!! sometimes one will sing "fly to" and the other will sing "me" I NEVER KNOW I SPEAK LIKE I AM SINGING HAHA(just kidding。_。
高高高 You are off to a good start for sure. Just try to keep the distance short to start with when they are out of the cage. Hopefully they will be flying to you no matter where they are soon! How cute that they mimic what you are saying and help each other out with it. That's the first time I have heard of budgies cooperating like that!
I don't need mine to be hungry (Unless I'm using seeds) They takeMillet and Egg Sticks as treats even though they have it always intheir cage when I have it. Mine are 50% to 60% Hand tamed. I had themfor a hole month now ;o I have two budgies called Ping + Pong. Werethinking Ping is a female because she calls for Pong when she doesn'tsee him. Ping is learning that if she steps up on my finger, she gets a treat.Pong is learning that my hand is a safe thing and I wont harm him. After they learn, (Both things) I'm sure it will be easy to learn themnew things. Oh btw, They kiss and they are three months old(B-day= 11/6/15 + 11th of June of 2015) They found themselves thebest toy ever, my curtains. They seriously love them. This was prettylong but I'm just talking about meh budgies [: Soon I'll a video about themso yuh can see them, I tryed once, they are scared for de camera I think, they are less stressed when I don't have it... Either way, great video thumbsup and I'm sure this will help when the learn those two things!
+FunnyAla BTW They are hand feed many times!! I just make them step up onmeh hand with food and they start eating it. Pong starts biting me when their is no more or when he wants to get off. Great way of telling me CX
Can you please create a video on how to stop budgies from biting you when they are on your finger. Please I am 13 year old who has got 3 pairs (6 budgies).thanks a lot
THE ZONE Thanks for the request. I currently have quite a few requests pending and don't want you to have to wait for assistance. I would suggest watching my video on Budgie biting. If that doesn't help, I would go back and hand train/hand feed your bird, so it comes to associate you with something positive. Chances are, the bird is biting because it is not feeling positive about being handled, so make handling a positive experience! Hope this helps, and thanks so much for watching my videos!
There are always different ways to approach training! How about helping your budgie lose weight. Then its health will be better and you will have better luck with training. Win/win ;-). Thanks so much for watching!!
Thanks. I really enjoy them and I feel very lucky that Siri (the yellow one) loves the camera. The white one, Soma, is a little more shy and also is a little worse at landing (did you see me have to kind of catch him when he flew?).
I amed mine on my second day with him and also he is sorta protective over me cuz I'm trying to tame his bro and his bro bites me so tango(the tame one)bites his bro
Wow, good job of taming your Tiel. They can be such sweet little birds. How cute that Tango protects you...hopefully his brother will learn a lesson soon and be a good bird!
Rinad Sohail Yes, it is. I would only let them out in a "bird proofed" environment, since birds can quickly get into trouble around windows, mirrors, ceiling fans, water dishes, etc. It also makes them a little easier to get back!
+Hassan Hassan they are parakeets they are just a more unusual colour there are blue budgies green budgies and the 2 shown in the video yellow and white :) plus canarys have longer and thiner legs different beak shape and more please get your facts right no offence
A day or two. They are really used to stepping up and have a routine of training in the morning, before they eat breakfast, so they were ready and eager to learn!
Since the wings aren't clipped are you ever nervous about them flying away and getting hurt. I think it is great to have wings that aren't clipped, I'm just a tad worried about safety......
Yes, safety is definitely a concern! I only let them fly in one room, and I make sure common threats to their safety are kept to a minimum in there (no ceiling fan, no proximity to the kitchen, no water bowls for the dogs, no mirrors, etc.). When it comes to the window, they also understand there is a pane of glass present between them and the outside (some people leave their windows slightly dirty, so that it is more apparent to the birds which can help). I really think it has been a benefit to allow them use their wings, but I would tell anyone to proceed with caution if they want to let their birds fly.
isabell mary It could be still getting used to you. Try to work on slowly taming the bird, so it's comfortable. Even a tame bird may occasionally bite though, especially in cases where it's frightened, disturbed (like during napping) or during breeding season.
Hello I have 3 parakeets. I trained one to eat from my hand but I am guessing that the other birds did something because now he is scared of my hand what can I do?
I have had one of my parakeets for 5 months now and when I put my hand near him he flies away. I have been very slow with the taming process but nothing is working. My other parakeet steps up just fine but this one doesn't. If u can comment back to give me tips about it it would much appreciated!!!😀
If you did something to really scare it or if the bird has had horrific experiences with humans in the past then it may be an ingrained behavior to run away from humans and supposedly stay safe. Budgies are pretty small and so they can be pretty shy sometimes as well or your bird may have a skittish personality.
Antonio Mejia Make sure to keep them in a safe environment and work with them in their cage initially, so they learn to trust you. Train them when they are hungriest (for mine, that is in the morning...I try to work with them before I feed breakfast) and use a great treat (like millet). You can have their feathers clipped, if you are really concerned about safety, but mine do well fully flighted in a bird proofed environment!
Antonio Mejia A few days. I got mine when they were very young, so that helped! Some birds may take longer, depending on their age, personality, and background.
My bird reaches his neck out as far as he can and gets the millet.
Same lmao
Same!
Same
@Crystal Rainwave he’s dead now

Hi my budge can fly to me but when I leave the spray millet and do not hold it it does not fly to me what should I do

I've tried when he is hungry and still nothing. Anything else I can try?
patience
is this ment for people who have the budgies trust?
depends, if your budgie loves millet, then it'll do anything to get to it, with trust or not.
Thank you so much now my bird flies to me when I say "fly to me"
I always wished to tame my budgie but they are scared!!!😢😢
They will be tamed. Just spend a lot of time with it and feed them there favourite treats
Woah that works a lot thx!😘
Serin Kim Awesome!
This really helped! now whenever I say "Clover come" ( Clover is my budgie) there is all off sudden a little bird on my hand, head, or shoulder.
م
My bird was perched on my computer eating it while watching that video!
My bird is quite lazy, so she can't really be bothered, she is a cockatiel. lol
What is that she is holding
Thecakecloner It is a sprig of millet. Budgie love it! You will usually find them in longer "sprays," but I cut mine into pieces!
Thecakecloner spray millet it’s a bird treat :D
Spray millet
Hi my budgie comes to my hand and perches everytime to eat the millet spray, but any slight movement it panics and gets scared .. How do I move around my hand while budgies are perching on my finger.? Many Thanks.

Fancyclaw clipping there wings isn’t the best idea
Johny1220 but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea exactly, it can help train you birds more easily
I'm sooo happy an surprised that my birds did this within a few tries I had all 3 of my babies on my hand. This has made my day. thanks for posting!!
So glad to hear about this! Thanks for watching!!

Thank you 😄☀️🐦🌎💙

+Eduardo Rivera Try hand feeding millet at meal times (and only give it when working with your bird). That will help your bird bond with you. Also, be very soft, gentle and patient when handling; especially at first :-).

hi were did you get you parakeet cage?
bob hateman I got my cage at Petmart!
Hi! I'm thinking of buying 2 lovebirds. But I don't want them flying around( I think it's not safe and my room is really big) plus I don't wanna clip their wings too! Help!
dont worry it took mine like a month
Don't get birds if you don't want them to fly
Birds need to fly around since they need exercise.❤️
you should find a bird friendly room as much as you want it to be in yours, make a special safe room at let the birds fly, they need it
Are Siri and Soma opposite gender? If so, which one is a boy and which one is a girl?
i see that a lot of budgies kinda stand in a (about) 60 degree andre then kinda turn (without moving their feet) 120 degree, kinda from a left profile to right profile view almost all the time, is that just to get a better view at what they're looking at, or just for shits and giggls/unknown reason? :P

Dayna Evans That's so awesome. I have seen a few other combinations of white/yellow. Are yours albino or clears?
1 clear and one lutino thanks so much for replying i love your videos!
Dayna Evans Thanks for your comment, and it's my pleasure!
Why dose my parakeet like to look at in the meat so much
how long do feathers take to grow back? just got my 2 birds about 3 days ago and their wings where already clipped
Swamprat My parakeets are unclipped, but I looked it up and found out it can take months, depending on the amount of molting it does (when the bird sheds feathers and grows new ones).
ah ok. i want to let them grow because when I let them out the cage they attempt to fly but can't because of their feathers being clipped.
Swamprat It's great exercise for them to be able to fly, and if you properly bird proof the area they will explore, it will help them do so safely!
it may vary to 1\2 months, dont worry.
I tried to teach then "fly to me" with the same snack you used in this video , they just fly to me from the cage to my finger, but when they are out of the cage, they wont fly to me@_@ I think this is a good start....
the most interesting thing is, I say "fly to me", when they come out of the cage, they will sing "fly to me"!!
sometimes one will sing "fly to" and the other will sing "me"
I NEVER KNOW I SPEAK LIKE I AM SINGING HAHA(just kidding。_。

Budgies are pretty small and so they can be pretty shy sometimes as well or your bird may have a skittish personality.
I have 2 parakeet and I want to train them to trust me but I can't because I'm afraid that they might fly away what should I do plz help
How long did it take you to trust you
Antonio Mejia A few days. I got mine when they were very young, so that helped! Some birds may take longer, depending on their age, personality, and background.
***** Awesome. I would recommend a flight harness outside, as I recently read that it's best, even if wings are clipped.
That was great it was useful thanks buddy for this video
