    Update for everyone on my personal project. Just completed this upgrade on my 07 335i that had an upgraded PCV/CCV delete system that was smoke at idle and decel after hard pull. I know have no smoking issues! After talking to Tony the only change I made was to a screw in version of the PCV valve from RAV4, 4 Runner, etc. because of availability.
    Thank you Tony. Great video that actually works!!!

    Hi Tony,
    Great video.
    Ive had an n54 nearly 15 years.
    Just recently the car seems to be smoking at around 1500rpm.
    Car is FBO with 19T turbos. Car never used to smoke but cheap 19t turbos were put on when the VTT GC turbos blew up.
    There are times im getting big puffs of smoke which is embarrassing in traffic. Car is cat free. Have done the valve cover and put in another rb pcv valve as previous one was 7 years old.
    Like another commenter said, going up a steep hill seems to cause alot of smoke.
    If it was turbo seals would it smoke all the time?
    The car doesnt smoke often but when it does its a big cloud of smoke. So trying to figure out the best solution.
    Wondering how to know if its valve seals?
    Got the burger catch can but make need to do the mods you listed in this video.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  11 місяців тому

      is it smoking if you hold the RPM or just does it constantly?
      mine would do the same when my low side catch can was getting full, pouring some caught oil into somewhere not meant to be, or keeping it from venting properly.
      My old e90 had sweaty valve stem seals, only way to confirm is looking in the ports with turbos off.
      you could convert your internal low side PCV system into an external, it helped mine a ton. only had some smoke on decel.
      definitely go over your current PCV setup first!
      hope this helps.

      Thanks Tony.
      I've replaced the pcv valve with another new rb valve and checked the flapper is OK.
      The car only smokes when oil is up to temp. I can make some smoke when holding the revs around 1500 to 1800 rpm which is unfortunately the speed alot of the time when driving in towns.
      On highways there is no smoke. Before the oil warms up there's no smoke either.
      I'm leaning towards oil seals not being great but the fact it happens at specific rpms does make me think its pcv related.

      @tony.nextlevelrides I'm wondering now if the crankcase vacuum is quite low at idle and causing drain issues.
      Could not find the ade pcv delete piece so I've ordered the VTT one. Also the VTT billet check valve. Does that mean I don't need the 2jz pcv valve?
      I will get myself a catch can and T into the evap line on the throttle body. Hopefully that improves the low side pcv and stops most of the smoke.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  11 місяців тому

      it sounds like it smokes similar to how mine did. I'd try and revamp the low side setup.
      I used the ADE to block off the factory PCV valve and cap, using an external PCV valve. I'm not familiar with the VTT one but if it has an external setup with PCV valve, it should be sufficient.

    • @jessicaandtrains7768

      @tony.nextlevelrides
      Well this is interesting. I bought a manometer and oil cap. Drilled the oil cap and fit a nozzle to it.
      The engine warmed up is reading zero vacuum. The gauge is definitely working.
      It definitely feels like there's less vacuum than there was previously. So I'm guessing I had a vacuum leak and it's got worse.
      I will recheck the pcv flapper and pcv valve I just added. I'm probably going to have to do the valve cover and gasket again.
      Can a smoke test pinpoint where the leak is?
      Thanks

    Hey bud, i’m running into smoking issues with my st n54. Running plugged head ports, a BMS high side catch can, BMS low side catch can kit (which deletes the pcv valve im pretty sure), also a brand new turbo too. I’ve been told i need to run a 2jz pcv but unsure how to do that with my low side catch can setup?

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  10 днів тому

      I'd recommend the RB low side PCV kit that integrates the supra PCV valve. without a valve, you're causing excessive crank case pressure causing smoking. you need a PCV valve to restrict flow and ensure its routed back into throttle body line post one-way valve

      hard to say what the might be. there's a lot of load on the engine when going up hill with lots of throttle.

      correct, you would just simply vent both ports to a catch can and to atmosphere. I cannot recommend this though, with stock turbos it will almost always smoke, with a single it may be different but the RB PCV delete fitting is exactly what everyone should use.

    Im using similar setup with rb kit and dont have issues. My high side barely gets any oil even after track days.
    At this point im thinking about deleting the high side catch can as well. Less clutter in the engine bay.
    I have also seen people running both pcv lines from the oem valve cover to a vibrant vta style catch can with no issues. Looks cleaner that way but im not sure if it will cause smoking issues. Any information on that?

      I've been deleting the high-side cans on a couple cars now, only adding it to the low side.
      Anytime I've seen both lines run to the same can, that's not separate, has always had issues with smoking. I don't recommend it. just put one to the low side with an inline PCV valve and call it done.

    I have a question because i've been working on this for sometime trying to tell people about it for years where im currently at the point where i have highside with flapper and lowside with full vacuum setup. but is there a way to make or find an adjustable flow valve, in essence works likes a one way check valve but it can be adjusted to let flow run the opposite way when adjusted for it. kinda like the current flapper valve but adjustable, because when you get higher HP/older cars with high hp you get more blow by because the amount of boost and the wear of the piston rings after so long, which would cause your amount of vacuum supplied to not be enough and without that vacuum i dont feel like it would pull oil sufficiently to do exactly that. i've also heard that the vacuum can assist in pulling the oil through your turbo drain lines which makes sense to a degree, but with bigger turbos i'd feel i might want just a bit more vacuum because the turbos are bigger, from what i see and read these turbos aren't meant to have oil built up in them because it can cause the seal to prematurely fail, thats why i think even ebay turbos might be viable if these steps are taken i've seen people in every class of turbo blow turbos VTT 19T 17T pures fraken etc and i think its a combination of people not knowing what should be done to prep there n54s for the power with upgraded twins "Bigger oil cooler, Full high and lowside PCV system, Upgraded outlets, full 3" dual exh or similar" the reason for exh is i feel the car came with 2.35 or 2.5 exh for the small turbos so you would need atleast 2.7 or 2.8 dual to make up for the exh flow difference with bigger turbos to stop back pressure from hurting your new turbos all these things in mind i dont support all ebay parts but a metal valve cover isn't a bad option for 200$.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  Рік тому +1

      you're absolutely right, I remember reading a thread where you adapted a bleed valve to the front timing cover and adjusted it to bleed enough vacuum, fine-tuning the exact amount you wanted on the valve cover. people would take a sacrificial oil cap and attach a vacuum gauge to it then dial in the exact amount they wanted. the valve had a filter on the end as well.
      for the life of me, I can't find the thread I had saved with all the info, fitting sizes, etc. it would be great to fine-tune the PCV setup for sure.
      and you're right, without a GOOD pcv setup, you can prematurely wear out upgraded turbos.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  5 місяців тому

      unfortunately there's no easy way to tell without removing the turbos and visually inspecting each port ok the exhaust side. when all else fails, it starts to point (in your case) towards turbos or valve stem seals.
      ensure the pcv you swapped is a good unit, not ebay or Amazon. they flow poorly. I'd only recommend the RB or BMS ones. nothing else.

I also have a mercedes b class 180 cdi driven 236,000 km and it uses minimal oil, and I also feel that it has more quality than an x3 in every way. hate to say, you have two problems I believe. if the first ones is what I'm thinking about, it could be the cam ledges causing the codes. you can also check the vanos filters judg above the cam chain tensioner. I believe each of them are T56 torx, don't touch the tensioner.
      secondly, if the pcv system is in check, it's possible you have a failing or leaky VTT turbo. you may need to pull the downpipes and see if it's pooling it one of the turbos.
      worst case, you may have leaky valve stem seals, while not a common issue, it's creeping up as my e90 had it.
