After discussing how Kathy follows the basic Hero's Journey structure in the last episode, I'd like to turn our attention to her heroic foil, John. While Kathy began her story as a simple highway robber stealing from travelers only to slowly become a confident monster-slayer and the savior of the land, John acts as a mirror to Kathy's rise. He begins as a confident warrior and, through poor circumstances and questionable decisions, descends into the role of a thief preying on the innocent townspeople that Kathy is now trying to save. He's an interesting character in that his failures give us some insight into what our hero could have been had she chosen a different path.
It's also really cool that Kathy uses her skills as a thief to escape the villain of this chapter and live another day. I love seeing characters that build on themselves, shedding the negative traits of their past while folding in the positive aspects to grow stronger. Very complex, interesting character. Not sure if Steve's just here for comedy relief (maybe he has an important part to play later), but I'm curious if Gabby will go through a redemptive arc after this (fingers crossed because I love that trope). Completely invested in the narrative at this point!

Lose10Pounds walking into the cave, leveling a pointed finger at you and, then cracking you (and you weapon) in half like a glowstick was such a good moment. couldn't have scripted that playing out more dramatically
No Kathy didn't give John COVID, it's because he not a main character and this video will be vengeance against Gabby. Gabrielle was the one who gave him COVID because he is An NPC.
OH MAN, that whole saga with John being low on health, -cowardly running away- "tactically" retreating from liberating Volga, and then wasting a bunch of turns, money, and items scrambling for (and failing to find) a means to heal, all could have been mitigated if he just fought the monster and a.) won via Acrobat speed; or more likely b.) took the hit, lost some money/items, sat out for a few rounds, and came back at full health to properly take the town. Dokapon: making all your "smart" choices your biggest regrets.
Forget save scumming, the only way he even has a CHANCE of beating Kathy now is to wipe this save, return her godless CPU soul to the void from whence it came, and start a new save. It'd be a hollow victory, but it's way more preferable to this slow death...!

You're gravely mistaken, John. Making you play this game WAS an expression of love from Woolie. It's just that his repeated and prolonged betrayals throughout his whole life by all his favorite childhood things _(ReBoot, TitanFall, Naruto, etc.)_ has tainted his heart, and warped his sense of right and wrong beyond repair. There's no saving him, _and there's no saving you._
Spoilers for future streams, but "Gabrielle's Darklingdom" is the best of the "Darklingdoms" arcs so far. It shows that focusing on side characters can be great, more specifically about JOHN's initially friendly relationship with Gabby being thwarted due to what, in any other context, would be a harmless prank. And said prank being directly related to the world purge and both JOHN and Gabby's deaths. The final showdown, on a choreographic standpoint, might have been lackluster, but the symbolism of JOHN, the strongest character who somehow beat our protag in their first fight, losing his weapon and a duel to someone who had lost it all is simply phenomenal. L10P's death afterwards, setting the thematic rebirth of Gabby as a human is just the icing on top.
John was right next to Volga too; as frustrating as it might have been, he could have gone there again after it was freed by Gabby and just healed there. I was expecting that because I didn't even realize the castle was in Multicrystal range, really. It's been long enough since I played that I forgot how expensive castles are if you don't own them though, so that still surprised me.
No one seems to be mentioning how John changing his job was actually a pretty bad decision in the long term, yes it had the short term use of acrobat just being a better job but he was so close to mastering warrior which would have: a) given an extra point of strength every level up for the rest of the game B) his weekly salary is way lower then it would be if he had stayed because acrobats salary is the worst in the game and he's not getting thw job mastery bonus which would be doubling his salary If he just stuck being a warrior for another week or 2 in game he'd be so much better off
There is only one reason to save scum in Dokapon. Job upgrade items being tossed. Not stolen, but destroyed or otherwise deleted. While the acrobat isn't the toughest, it tends to be crazy expensive. And the other 2 hidden jobs are fucking chores taking a ton of turns and luck. The odds of seeing them in a playthrough where the player isn't specifically grinding just for that job unlock is extremely low - basically they *MUST* sacrifice any chance of winning the game until the final-chapter shuffle. They appear too late game and require too much in the way of resources.
I can relate to John's artist alley story so much. Being 9 hours at a table can be exhausting but fun, BUT WHEN YOU'RE A GUEST/ANNOUNCED HOST DOING PANELS ON TOP OF THAT? oh buddy that is NON-STOP, it's exhausting. Still incredibly fun and incredibly rewarding though, even if your time and brain get squeezed like an orange.

That's what Steve did that kept him from getting bodied by Gabby on her last turn as a Darkling this video, I think; the footage skipped over it, but based on him being on timeout on his next turn, it seems like he must have challenged a monster and immediately gave up. As for advanced classes, I'm not sure, but with Warrior almost mastered and Acrobat unlocked, he's technically on the path to Hero at least. Robo Knight doesn't need any Warrior-derived classes, meanwhile, just Alchemist (Magician and Thief) and the Cleric-Monk line (which can be unlocked by mastering any base class, or even Acrobat), so he's not really making progress towards it at the moment. Even if you count the fact that he'll eventually be unlocking Cleric no matter what, Acrobat is redundant with the Warrior progress he's already made for that. (Given the thumbnail from a prior video, *Kathy* might be on the road to becoming a Robo Knight though, since she's apparently going to go Cleric next. I don't know if the AI ever actually goes for the two "secret" classes, but it'd be amazing if she did.)
