LEARN HOW TO MAKE A VEGETARIAN / VEGAN CHINESE STYLE ONE PAN SOY SAUCE RICE RECIPE TODAY!
LAY HO MA (how's it going in Cantonese)! This recipe is inspired by the popular clay pot restaurants in Hong Kong. But since many of us (myself included) may not have small clay bowls and open burners, this is a bit of an inspired home kitchen / weeknight version. Join me in this episode and learn how to make a tasty one pan soy sauce rice recipe today!
Ingredients:
1 cup short grain rice
2 pieces garlic
small piece ginger
2 sticks green onions
60g fresh shiitake mushrooms
1 plantbased sausage
60g smoked tofu
2 dried red chili peppers
2 tsp avocado oil
1 1/2 cups water
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp dark soy sauce
1 tbsp maple syrup
splash of black vinegar
1 tbsp chili oil ( • Most addictive Red Chi... )
Directions:
1. Rinse and drain the rice 2-3 times and set it aside
2. Grate the garlic and ginger. Chop the green onions into small batons
3. Remove the end bits from the fresh shiitake mushrooms and slice them in half. Slice the plantbased sausage and smoked tofu
4. De-seed the dried red chili peppers
5. Heat up a nonstick pan to medium low heat. Add the avocado oil followed by the garlic and ginger. Cook for a couple of minutes. Add the dried red chili peppers and cook for 30 seconds
6. Add the rice and cook for 30 seconds, then add the water. Turn the heat to medium high. When the water begins to bubble, turn the heat to medium low and be sure the rice is submerged in the water
7. Quickly line the toppings onto the rice. Then, cover and cook for 15min
8. Make the sauce by combining the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, maple syrup, black vinegar, and chili oil
9. After 15min, turn the heat off and let the rice steam further for another 10min
10. Turn the heat back onto medium and let the rice cook for a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, pour the sauce over the rice. Serve the pan table side and enjoy!

I'd love to make your food but I can't eat soya ( or any wheat). I'm wondering how I could make a substitute sauce, any ideas? (I'm in the UK). Thanks.
I was sharing this video with my husband, who has eaten many of your recipes that I have prepared, and he’s seen your cookbook in the kitchen, but he hasn’t ever watched one of your videos before. He loves the way you present the cooking, but the fun part was at 2:18 when you open your cabinet to reveal dozens of neatly arranged and labeled containers, his jaw dropped and all he could say was “oh my God” seeing how organized you are, and we are both in awe of how beautiful your kitchen is. Is that a stage for making videos, or is that your everyday kitchen you cook in at home?
That spice cabinet has its own internet fan club.
There’s a video about how he organized it!
@@vysz22 I have it on an organization playlist I made because I was so inspired.
Hahahaha I had the same , when i first saw that ingredient cabinet! Jalous making :)

You always make plant-based cooking so good 👍 Thank you for the inspiration.

Ahhhh the chili oil ❤❤ I made a big batch at the holidays and gave some to my kids and special friends. I appreciate you sharing the recipe. It’s delicious. This recipe looks fantastic and covers a lot of ground! Easy, one dish, spicy yet earthy. Can’t wait to try.
Excited for you to give it a try 😎
Yes! Thanks for giving me a good idea for a Christmas present for family members that cook.
OMG! I just want to throw myself into every dish you make ❤

I’m always attracted to your recipes, but this is one I’ll actually make. I’m the only one eating plant based in the household, so that’s why I want easy easy easy recipes.
Yay thank you. The is very unusual for me but so far there hasn't been one of your recipes that I didn't like. So I wanted to share one of my favorite style of rice recipes.
1 c Jasmine rice
1 tsp of gated ginger
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp chili flakes
1 Tsp salt
1 can coco milk
1 can water
mix it all together and let it cook without string until all liquid is gone. YUM!

As a vegetarian, I am so impressed and grateful for your recipes. Speaking from personal experiences, being a vegetarian is not easy, let alone vegan. Bravo to your dedication, creativity and doable-delicious recipes!
Off topic: I have watched a few of your videos; every time the scene at 2:18 comes up, the movie "Sleeping with the enemy" pops in my mind....😂😂😂
That looks amazing. One to try next weekend 😀. My son just made the bang bang style noodles from your book Cook with confidence “. You are also an inspiration to both of the kids. They cooking very often since the book arrived. I just eat 😂. Thank you Wil. ❤
Oh wow! So great to hear and amazing treat for you 😎
With all of the "replace this, omit that, add what you like" this recipe boils down to throwing whatever into a pan then add some sauce. My kind of cooking.
I love your rice dishes. I cooked 3 weeks for my family in Italy. I often cooked rice and they all liked it, but my mom missed pasta. 😅
Glad to hear 🙌🏻
I adore your food. I also adore your super organized cupboard of labeled spices & grains. They say to marry a man who can cook, but I say, marry a man who can cook & organize their kitchen cupboards with beautifully labeled storage containers.
Could you please include the info on where you purchased your food storage containers? Many thanks! They are beautiful.
I have not been able to find smoked tofu. Any snapshots you can send of packaging of what you buy so I can do a more detailed search?
I love listening to the review at the end of the cooking where you taste and describe flavours, textures and colours. This is a MUST TRY. I’ve made many of your recipes and they’ve never disappointed. That chilli oil is legendary!
When I was a lot younger, it wasn't super uncommon for lunch to just be fresh jasmine rice and soy sauce. Not the best lunch, but if the rice is really high quality and cooked right, it's good enough just as is. Your recipe reminds me a lot of that, only grown up and a lot more fleshed out!
Finally, I got around to making this dish. That sauce is Everything. Love this dish
Looks delicious and I like the technique used here, so simple! I love this channel - I’m eating more and more vegetarian food these days and your recipes really inspire. Thank you.
Just made this - it is absolutely fantastic! One can't help but love the way you describe your dishes after cooking them. So much love and creativity with all those words you come up with to cherish the food you made.
The super calm chef ever. The best thing is when I saw the recipe it seems look so hard doing it but when you started it ...wow..so easy. Thanks for always giving us your toothsome recipes. More power and God bless always. Thanks a lot Mr chef..
This is such a nice idea! I feel like it would also work perfectly for meal prep, because you could prepare different sauces for each day to switch things up a bit! c:
Absolutely 🙌🏻
Mr Yeung, I would love to buy one of your t shirts but being a larger person you don't have large enough sizes!!! I have lost a lot of weight in the last year but not enough to fit in to the XL size yet!!!! Also I am struggling to find different ways to make tofu taste better would love to see you teach us some different ways to prepare it!!! Watching from Michigan USA!!!!

Thank you for this recipe. It's symple, beautiful and look delicious. Grettings from Spain :)
Hiya 🙋🏻♂️ Enjoy
This is so beautiful and appealing. I really want that smoked tofu but I've never seen it in stores. It looks great.
I don’t cook vegetarian style but thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated your demonstration and explanation style. Your communication skills are outstanding. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. You appear to be a professional Chef.
my style cooking , one pan dishes. Love your idea of just placing the other stuff on top
It is truely amazing to see in your face how great that recipe turns out thank you for your post 🙋🏻♀️🙏
Ok, to be honest, I was iffy at first about this recipe. Boy was I wrong. Another delicious recipe that will for sure enter into my regular rotation. The sausage goes beautifully with the mushrooms and that awesome sauce. In addition to the maple syrup, I added a little pomegranate molasses. Wow. Thanks again, Will!
I tried this dish for dinner today (exclude chilies) and it was simply delicious! I used hard tofu, fish cake, lightly blanched Siew Pak Choy, shiitake mushroom and spring onions. I got to say that the sauce is simple but yet it give a unique and flavorful taste. Thank you very much for the recipe!
Can I get your cook Brooks in Jamaica, I really en joy your cooking show, would like to try some of your recipes
Hi Wil! Where do you get the smokey tofu? I can't find it anywhere and the Asian markets don't carry it either.
It was purchased from the local Asian supermarket 🤷🏻♂️ Wondering if it’s an item they can order

This is another great recipe that works as a quick weeknight meal. Smoked tofu is delicious and I use it a lot for quick meals since it’s already deeply flavored. It’s fun to make complicated dishes when you’ve got time, but there’s a real need for quick recipes that are both healthy and delicious to feed the ones you love. Thank you for another winner.
I was hoping to see how you removed a portion from the pan.
Also, the vegetables and tofu could not have infused the delicious sauce enough. What do you think?
~ textures & flavours ~ yumm 🥰😋🌞
Zen and The Art of Vegan Cooking by Yeung - as always the simplicity and attention to detail is the key. Many thanks, looks delicious.
☺️
With the slightly crisp rice on the bottom, this recipe kind of reminds me of Bi Bim Bap. I just love the crisp rice, mushrooms/onions, tofu, & I was ashamed to admit before now, but I always love to eat the vegetarian sausage (lol), so this one's perfect for me.
Wooo! 🥳 Enjoy!
Thank you … for your peaceful calm cooking instructions you are so very inspirational

It is from the brand Ballarini 🙌🏻

How do you cook this rice without sticking and without stirring? Please help :) or do you let the rice almost cook and then add the veggies and tofu?
Amazing recipes.. thank you🙏🙏❤️❤️
You are absolutely right 💯 I'm going to impress my friends with this recipe. Thank you so much. I can smell and taste it already 😍👍🍀
This looks so delicious and easy. Do you make your own smoked tofu? We are rural and limited on what we can get. Your cupboard is awe-inspiring! Love your visual detail. What cookware do you use? Is your non-stick non-teflon, too? Thanks!
I notice that you often include maple syrup in your ingredients. I'm wondering why you prefer this sweetener in particular. I'm also wondering whether maple syrup is commonly used by chefs in Asia. Thank you for the great work.
that's a great idea. actually easy and nutritionally balanced
I keep expecting not to get excited about your recipes, but this recipe has me excited to get the ingredients and make this this week! I seem to have some trouble finding smoked tofu. Whatever that is I’ll keep trying to find it and get this amazing looking dish to table! Thank you Wil!
Hi, darylcollins1555,
Do you live in or near a sizable city? Most Asian grocery stores have smoked tofu.
Ok. I had to pause when you opened your kitchen cabinets that’s amazing! I can’t read the labeled tho. Even upon zooming in. Handwriting is either in another language or it’s written so small. Do you have a kitchen tour video?
In Italia.. We cook this style and call it Risotto..except we use olive oil and reggiano ..with peas.. Risi Con Pisi in Veneto dialect. Marco Polo did well to bring back rice from China.
Love the sausage, the tofu, the chopping, and the fresh vegetables.
I have recently become vegan. For health reasons. I love your recipes because they are simple to follow, have flexibility & delicious
Just found your channel. I eat meat, but it isn't a must for every meal. This video is pretty much my go-to for a simple meal most days. Just rice with sausage and one or two veggies, all cooked together.
If using brown rice, would it work to cook it first for about a half hour before adding the "toppings"? or something else? This is unique and looks incredibly delicious.
Your videos have really helped make our lives easier, as most are quick and easy. Hope the fire smoke isn't too bad near you. Air conditioning and air purifiers!
God bless you and your channel
Love the way you explain everything so clearly. Wonderful thank you.
In my opinion, the videos really complement the books. As an owner of signed copies, I find it more motivating to see the recipe come to life from the channel. Perhaps you can select subscribers requests from your recipes and bring them to the channel?
Wow delcious tasty look
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
oh I made this in my rice cooker tonight. It was so good. I've used some almond butter in the sauce. really good.
Does your rice cooker give it the caramelized crunchy at the end after adding the sauce same as stove top does?
Where are you finding your smoked tofu? My search at multiple asian markets has been fruitless. Does it go by another name? Is it refridgerated?
Love your videos, they are short and too the point! The food always looks so delicious and talking is kept to a minimum. I am trying to go SOS (salt, oil and sugar free), do you have any SOS recipes?
ohhhhh my.... 😍😍😍. The way you speak about this dish made me fall in love with it without even trying it yet
Do you ever use brown rice? Much healthier. We can get basmati and now jasmine unprocessed
can you share the recipe with other proteins, like with tempe. because I'm pretty tired of eating mushrooms and tofu 😅
I enjoyed the one pan concept and very freely adapted it, using cooked frozen rice, fresh asparagus and beans, and an improvised sauce eg i found a bottle of white rice vinegar to splash, and with a glass of red wine for myself, thoroughly enjoyed cooking. I'll come back to this recipe its conceptually suoerb😂
Hmmm, that looks really good. I wish lol I could find someone who is really good in the kitchen. I love asian food 😅
This recipe is worth adding to one of my favourite one
Plant based sausage is not a favourite though .
I going to use a wog type of sausage like pork and fennel sausage 😋
I like your simple recipes, and your voice is calming along with the music. One could practice relaxation to your videos too. 🙂
That does look delicious.❤
I’m surprised by the ratio of rice to water, is it because of the sauce?
This looks like a delicious dish. For me, it will be for a celebratory event as I won’t eat processed ingredients on a regular basis. The veggie sausage and dried tofu are processed. I would replace the sausage with fresh seafood such as shrimp or sea scallops, and replace the dried tofu with fresh tofu.
Thanks for a great recipe. Can I omit the sausage without compromising on the dish?
Can you tell me what store your products carry. Thank you for sharing.
Can I ask you what kind of rice this is , more glutinous thicker or just thinner short grain !!??
Maybe you can make a separate cookbook with all the delicious sauces you’ve come up with over the years
Hello Yeung, no syrup. Can I use honey and how much…thanks.
Your Spice Storage is the most beautiful thing i have seen all week!
☺️
If I have someone like that cooking for me every day, I could so easily become a vegetarian.
It would be good to skip chopping and gratings- we know how to do it. Keep the video short and concise would be better.
Whats the best meat substitute.....soy curls, firm tofu, or jackfruit ?
Cant wait to try this ...I cant seem to find smoked tofu unfortunately though .
My goodness, that tofu resembles duck. This is a bad man!
You have a nice voice...your whispering style is quite attractive ❤
Looks so good - just like all your recipes. I'll be right over! ;)
Wow I guess I'll be right there with you Chef. Lots of healthy food. 😍
hi may i ask the cooking pan you are using in this recipe? thanks… will definitely try thisrecipe
❤love it so incredible refined rice recipe...Thank you Sir.❤
I found this golden long grain sella rice! It’s my new fave for all dishes. I simply cannot find smoked or baked tofu in the US.
I know of only one store here in Michigan that is getting better at getting in more plant based items!!! But still no smoked tofu only teriyaki!!!
@@nanetterolph2972I live in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas which is lacking in everything except what I call basics, traditional foods. They are big into frying everything!
I've ordered Mori-Nu tofu on Amazon in the past.
Making tofu at home is really very simple. U have to constantly stir like you make traditional lemon pie from scratch. Similar to making yogurt but it only takes about an hour. All required is blender/ food processor, nonstick Dutch oven, strainer, cheese cloth & nut milk bag if u have 1 (I've used a bread (material) sack when my nut bag was no where to b found) & you'll need a press specially for firm. But starting out u can use 2 (same size) plastic containers & you'll need to put holes in one. Old storage containers that lost their lids lint ago or repurposed food, like pint of fresh mushrooms cubes in.
Ingredients r simple, soy beans & a coagulant. Coagulant can be different based on what recipe tofu being used in salt or acid based. Example, I like using fresh lemon juice for tofu going into salads & salts when tofu used to make burgers/ faux meat sandwiches...
If u like to garden sounds are very easy to grow. Preserve them in freezer them pull out when your ready to make tofu
I enjoy growing my own edible garden because I know it's organic & non GMO vs being organic enough to get that gov stamp. Then I can pick the beans at different stages based on what I'm doing with them. Unsure beans make real yummy tofu, I forget the name. Making a roasted crunch salty spicy snack that's perfect served w micro beer.
My garden saves me ton of money and I'm 95% self-sustained having fresh veggies yr round, frozen that gets me thru to next yr harvest, 3 yrs of canned & everything else gets dried for long term storage.
I did with regular tofu and its delication ❤
