Hi guys, I am the creator of Photopea :) thanks for making this review! Photopea exists since 2013. You can copy (raster) images between Photopea and other programs. I will look into copying vectors (that is what was done in this video). Also, I will improve the painting with a pressure :) Websites (like Photopea) can do as much as web browsers allow us to do. We can not use the Ctrl+T shortcut for the Free Transform (all browsers open a new tab in such case), so we came up with Alt+Ctrl+T. Also, we can not access the installed fonts, so we provide a way to load the TTF/OTF files manually.
"How is this legal?" - Well, the only thing Adobe really owns with regards to Photoshop is the name (via a trademark on the word "Photoshop"), the software code (via copyright over the code itself in binary or source form), and potentially specific features (via patents). It's entirely possible to make a photo editor with similar functionality to Photoshop without infringing upon any proprietary right of Adobe's; otherwise apps like Affinity Photo, Krita, GIMP, or w/e wouldn't be allowed to exist. Assuming that the creator of Photopea wrote his own image editor (instead of decompiling a cracked version of Photoshop or something) and didn't implement anything that Adobe has a patent on, the only other concern would be "look and feel". There's two ways one could allege infringement: by copyright or by trade dress. Back in the 1980s there were a wave of copyright lawsuits built around look-and-feel, notably from Apple and Lotus. The former basically stopped when it came out that Bill Gates had kneecapped Apple into basically giving Microsoft the Mac UI. The latter was ruled against as uncopyrightable: the 9th Circuit decided that copying, say, *the entire menu structure* of Lotus 1-2-3 was fine because you can't copyright a method of operation. So *copyright* look-and-feel infringement doesn't have much to stand on. There is this other thing called "trade dress", however. It's a concept similar in spirit to trademark. I can't make soda and put it into bottles that say "Coca-Cola", because that's a trademark infringement. But I also can't make soda and put it into bottles that are shaped like a Coke bottle - that violates their trade dress. However, it requires that the thing you're alleging trade dress infringement over be actually distinctive and also not a functional aspect of the product. This is also a problem for UI design, because most UI design is either functional (which means it's something you need to patent), or non-distinctive (because UI designers are often following trends). tl;dr it's legal because the only thing it copied was a UI design, and UI design isn't very well protected. (it's good that it isn't.)

I’ve been told that the reason Affinity Photo has no ‘select object or person’ thing is actually because Adobe licensed it, if that’s true then definitely moved into the terrain of copyrighting tools and not just UI elements.
@@frostreaper1607 That would be a patent, not a copyright. You could patent, say, a feature that uses machine learning or something to autodetect what parts of an image are what and crop them out. You *cannot* copyright such functionality, and patents expire far quicker than copyright does. Photopea appears to have that functionality, so they might be infringing on something Adobe owns, but that would then depend upon how the patent was drafted and what functionality they implemented in Photopea.

Adobe: "Hmm .. should we sue or acquire." If Adobe sued him, he could just tweak the interface, change the name, and remove any of their trademarks. Then it's a legitimate free competitor as long as he didn't reverse engineer their code. Most of what Photoshop does is just mathematical, so it's not like there's much they'd have exclusivity too.
If I was the adobe CEO, which I am not and have no intention of being, I would go down the acquire path, because that would from a functionality standpoint make Photoshop cross platform, and when has that been a bad thing??
If I was Adobe CEO, I would do something for the people and in a totally non profitable way I would acquire it and then slam a wall of monthly fees on it. Now you can use photoshop on your browser just like your regular photoshop! With a nice wall of monthly subscriptions. :)
Most of the Photoshop operations could be done by plethora of Open source Machine vision and image manipulation libraries like OpenCV, AForge or ImageMagick. So yeah, Operations can't be copyrighted.

Brad, your audio needs to be mixed to get rid of that tinny echo. Throw on some headphones with this video and you’ll hear it without even going to max volume. You should be able to fix this in pre or post, depending on your set up (of course pre is better on a mixing board since it means no time wasted after you record). But I loved the video and very glad it showed up in my primary YT feed without being a subscriber!
I've known about photopea a while now, and I find it very useful when I need/want to edit an image on the go where I don't have my computer with me. It's really great for a web-based free software
I've used this in the past - it's great, but I prefer the local version. Side note / fun fact - I recall be told (many years ago) that Dreamweaver's interface was built in html - so the program you used to create html was built with html.
This will be useful to use on my mac since I’m too poor to afford the Mac version of the affinity suite. I have it on PC, but my keyboard broke on my Surface Pro 7, so I can only use my 2013 MacBook Air.
This project is around for much longer than 2 years, I checked back at a conversation I had about it when I first found it and that was back in 2017 and I'm pretty sure it wasn't brand new at that point either. Apparently there was some kind of clickbait article or post somewhere questioning the legality of this, which is just ridiculous. Why should it be illegal? Adobe is portrait as if they are graciously allowing this to happen, they don't. I'm certain that if they could do anything about it they probably would. As long as he didn't directly steal any code from adobe there is nothing illegal about making a product with similar or identical features and selling it for less or with a different business model. Maybe if he copied adobes icons too closely?! ...but even that is questionable, imagine someone would hold the rights to the floppy disk looking save icon, it would entirely defeat the purpose of icons if you couldn't make very similar looking ones. Same with shortcuts, imagine someone would own the rights to ctrl+C/V/X Still good video though, I'm just annoyed by this notion from people that Adobe has some kind of right to a software monopoly. If this idea gets normalized enough it will eventually happen.
Pretty sure the reason you can copy from Illustrator into Photoshop directly is because of Adobe Bridge. Copying things like multiple vector parts inside illustrator is not something most OS clipboards were designed to hold.
@@sheddu8350 It is an app and software. The s Pen works pretty well, pressure sensitivity was there right off the bat. It wasn't as good as a native app but still pretty impressive!
Looks good to me, it is good to see Photoshop being challenged and hopefully they will produce even more amazing tools. Hopefully this app will be developed in many other ways such as producing a whole range of type tools or shape tools etc that are not in Photoshop.
Adobe: "Hmm .. should we sue or acquire."
If Adobe sued him, he could just tweak the interface, change the name, and remove any of their trademarks. Then it's a legitimate free competitor as long as he didn't reverse engineer their code. Most of what Photoshop does is just mathematical, so it's not like there's much they'd have exclusivity too.
I think they should do what the MySQL guys did, sell, then immediately fork.
Likely the intent of the creator to make a sell very easy and compelling
I lost my Adobe license recently, now I find this. So good! Thank youuuu
I was studying but I need to see this
Sameee tomorrow I have my sst exams (have revised everything) but I thought it's all done and I grabbed my tab and read this and I thought omg brad cowboy and photopea 😬
Yeah, I used their site to edit a receipt online and it was so great! My friends who knew of it still praise me for that including my computer engineering friend who accepted that my work was better and asked me how I did it.😄😅 It saved me.
I knew about this for a long time now and i use this more than photoshop lol.
when I was studying photography in year 11(australia) I used this all the time, it is amazing
Hi Brad I love your tutorials
Maybe can you make a video about using Vectornator? It's complicated as hecc
I’ve been using it for a while already. It’s a lifesaver.
Maybe someone will make a clone of Procreate and open it up to the PC users!
android users plssss
...Just... Use Krita or CSP?
@@miwiarts CSP is very good and I do have it and use it but Procreate has some additional additions that will likely compliment my work flow better.
As for Krita.....no way. Not even worth commenting on.
@@ToddDolce haaaaaa krita is old juice hahahaha it's just tragic.
Pc has way better drawing apps than procreate
my school cancelled their photoshop subscription which was somewhere in the 5 figures and they use this photopea now and it's no problem
This person is a legend !
Good job for Ivan! The crime is the greedy monthly fees that most apps require nowadays
Omg i love photopea combinating gifs has never been easier
This is awesome! Please make an Illustrator one as well!
This is impressive.
The original photoshop program must have taken hundreds of programmers to build and you did this all by yourself.
I've known about photopea a while now, and I find it very useful when I need/want to edit an image on the go where I don't have my computer with me. It's really great for a web-based free software
Youve got the best pages here in youtube.❤️ Youre the best.
I've used this in the past - it's great, but I prefer the local version. Side note / fun fact - I recall be told (many years ago) that Dreamweaver's interface was built in html - so the program you used to create html was built with html.
Finally something useful for my Students. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir and you are my inspiration
I’m so happy this exists ❤
Weeeiii now i can Edit my Photos on my iPad ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for bringing this tool into my world, it rocks. You have won a new subscriber this day sir. Keep up the good work.
Man I have no words to thank you! This runs so smooth in my i3. I'm unable to find the camera Raw filter lol. That's the only negative I'd give
Using photopea since 2018 have very good experience with that since i don't do any advance thing with Photoshop
Flatpak, Snap app, Appimage or what else. I NEED THIS AS STANDALONE version. PLS!
You can download photopea and run it offline in a browser. Tutorial can be found via top-right links in photopea.
Same with shortcuts, imagine someone would own the rights to ctrl+C/V/X
Still good video though, I'm just annoyed by this notion from people that Adobe has some kind of right to a software monopoly. If this idea gets normalized enough it will eventually happen.
Thanks for bringing this to light
I'd like to know how one guy can do all the coding for this when it took Adobe years to do and a big team of programmers?
Pretty sure the reason you can copy from Illustrator into Photoshop directly is because of Adobe Bridge. Copying things like multiple vector parts inside illustrator is not something most OS clipboards were designed to hold.
07:36 Or... It's because you have the 'Smooth' parameter set to 0%.
I've been using it for professional stuff the last year. It's amazing.
This is even blazing fast compared to opening my actual Photoshop just to make quick edits. Big fan of Photopea.
Loving these new hallmark mystery series .pl upload more
I have used photopea on my Samsung tablet forever. Lol don't tell people 🤣 some of us don't want to pay adobe lmao 😂
I’m so happy to have photopea! My deep thanks.
The guy who create that could literally make his original drawing app or software
Uhm, isnt that what he just did?
@@CorporalFlynnFlyTaggert yeah but something that is more original and rather than browser it's an app or software
@@sheddu8350 seems original to me because its free and he made it on his own and it is available for anyone to use with access to the internet
@@The.sun.chaser yeah but it would be nice if it was software its more easy and many people might know about it
@@sheddu8350 It is an app and software. From wikipedia "A web application (or web app) is application software that runs on a web server, unlike computer-based software programs that are run locally on the operating system (OS) of the device." (Not to be confused with website). It seems it even allows you to run your code inside.
What makes it look unoriginal is the UI.
So happy you reviewed this, it's been a excellent resource resource forever!
I used Photopea before I bought Photoshop and it almost the same.
My work computer doesn't let me install other apps other than what's on here.
So yeah, this is very helpful. I'll certainly start using it when I need to edit some images next time!
I hope someone makes a knockoff Illustrator for Android so I can exclusively stay on my s7+ ... or maybe it already exists... somebody please tell me lol
Agree!
Second that
Krita is better than procreate so use that
Nvm you said illustrator mb
@@sugaristhenewwhite I have procreate, but I prefer working on s7+ with Clip Studio Paint.
@@nathaniel972ful oh thats good too
I am glad someone copied them and I won't have to pay that exorbitant price, thanks for sharing this. Didn't know it existed
In my pc i have smooth lines ( without graphics tablet)
this is better than i expected
I've been using that for a year now lol
I love that we got a Adobe ad, In a vídeo of a alternative photoshop
"Photo Pea"?
My guess: "foe - TOE - pee - uh"
Rhymes with utopia.
Just sayin'
He needs to make a version of lightroom as well, because we're all tied to subscriptions to get both LR an PS. Wedding photographers etc would be using both.
Even if it ain't the best for drawing, I'll be finding good use of this in making memes. >:)
This is A M A Z I N G ! !
Does photopea have the palette knife filter?
I've been using this for a while, such a gem
The smoothness slider is right there beside the pressure sensitivity toggles
I use photoshop solely for creating printables for my Etsy store and if there’s a dupe for PS then I’m canceling my plan and trying out Photopea for sure. God bless Ivan.
It's an awesome program for personal in-house projects. Good for kids who are tired of usinh basic functions of MS paint.
If I wanted to use this to do/learn the most come in Photoshop tasks could I? (Follow a Photoshop tutorial step-by-step) I have been I’m looking to learn Photoshop for years, I’ve only ever used other free, Photoshop like, digital design apps. (for years.) So happy to see something like this.
Awesome. Will check this. Adobe CC subscription costs are obscene for the casual user.
Is it an offline product or online service ? If it's online I would rather not be at the mercy of what they are going to do with my works
I thank the man because I actually make my video thumbnails with his website since I can't afford Photoshop subscription yet
I'm going to try this out on my lower end computer. I suspect having to stay online to use this or access it is why Adobe isn't sweating it
Photopea has given me the freedom to do photo manipulation that I only thought Adobe Photoshop has. I never had the privilege of using the program, heck, it's equivalent to our 3 months living expenses. So I'm very thankful to Ivan Kutskir for creating such a free program that I and people who can't afford adobe have a place to be creative on. :)
