I really like this show, and I don't see why it gets so much hate from critics. A lot of reviews just seem to be ridiculously depressed on it, making a mountain of every little thing. Yours didn't do that, and was way more straightforward, and really enjoyable because of it. I pretty much agree with you on everything you said, aside from not being bothered by the length at all. I thought the giant episode and the vikings episode were a bit weak, but they were still alright. Was quite actively enjoying the rest of it, and even bits of those weaker episodes. I could've done without Elfo crushing on Bean so much too. I guess that's done with now though, given the events in the last few episodes. I'd say King Zog is probably my favourite character, that way he has that manner of just being all blithery and confused over everything is super hilarious and quite humanizing when his good motivations come to light. Looking very forward to the next season. :)
I do enjoy elfo, not the crushing part, he's learning the harshness of the world and is adapting to it. Not taking shit from people, killing people, lying, and being depressed. Which was his dream of finding true sorrow and despair.
I liked the longer episodes in this series. I might be in the minority on that though. Also when you re-watch, there are a lot of neat visual gags in the background. That said I do completely agree with you about Elfo. I was glad when Bean picked saving her mother over him. More realistic choice, and Dagmar has been much more entertaining to watch.
I finally got around to watching this and I definitely agree with you about the episode length and pacing. I think maybe I was also setting myself up to expect a sharper kind of humor, like Futurama which is one of those rare shows that hits the ground running in the first episode. But I'm really glad I stuck with it, it's a pretty well layered show with some of my all time favorite voice actors and gorgeous animation.
Just like with Bojack Horseman season 1, Disenchantment season 1 really improves in the last few episodes; everything from raised stakes in a more interesting plot to more likeable and developed main characters. Also just like Bojack Horseman, season 2 was better.
I probably wont ever take the time to sit down and watch but was curious about how it is. Big Futurama and Simpsons fan (yes even later seasons.) Thanks for another great review! Finding out Eric Andre is in it might be enough to check it out.
Thanks! Yeah that's the plan, people seem to dig my South Park content haha. My plan through the year will be to review BoJack, Big Mouth & South Park and hopefully a few investigative vids along the way. If you wanna see some other animation related stuff that I've written my new show on Nerdist is called Animation Investigation!
I actually appreciate that the episodes were longer though I will admit that I fell asleep in the first episode rice but that was after work. And I appreciate the humor when I watch comedy I don’t expect to laugh out loud. Not all comedy is laugh out loud funny
I did! My new plan is to get back into reviews and also start a new series of videos, hoping to release at least one of those a week starting in the near future! I also have a new series at Nerdist called "Animation Investigation" that you should check out! I'm not the host, but I write a produce it!
Can I just point out that there are two elves that we know of that left Elfwood before Elmo left. Which is Leavo and Returno! In the first episode king Elf says that only Leavo left and never returned, not even Returno.
Just gonna post this to let them viewers know I watched it when it was unlisted. Also, I'm glad to see you back buddy! Can't wait for S5 of Bojack Horseman!
I loooved this!!! The only thought I had was - I don't see a problem with the 36 minute pilot. I think we're still stuck on the standard 19-22 minute short show and the 42 minute long show because you add in commercials but Netflix was known for doing shows at odd times, letting thing splay out. I think the main difference between needing Futurama to get to the point (i.e. meeting our 3 main characters so soon) is Futurama HAD to made a statement in the beginning vs Disenchantment having the backing and fan base of Futurama and people were already excited for it. They probably thought they could do MORE in the pilot rather than just the bare bones to set up the series.
My big issue is that Futurama’s is just more effective. The first Disenchantment really drags for me. Not opposed to a longer episode if it’s paced in a way I’m engaged with! Glad you liked it tho
@@Johnny2Cellos That totally makes sense and you're right, it was WAY more effective. I think I meant it more like the writers thought they didn't have to because of Futuramas legacy? They didn't have as much riding on it (compared to a new pilot with zero fans)- if that makes sense?
this show was so decent i honestly NEVER noticed the length of each episode... you're quite literally the ONLY PERSON to ever put attention to it and hating it...
I'm definitely not the ONLY PERSON to draw attention to that haha. I've talked to a TON of people who feel this way. I really like this show these days, tho
Like I never can understand when anyone say "it was to long" You don't have to use the whole thing, Or in this case, you don't have to watch the whole thing. And you have extra left over :P
This is a critique not criticism. No meaness just feedback. That BACK GROUND MUSIC needs to go. It makes it difficult to hear the narrative. It has a very short cycle through time. Which works well for your intro/outro but then you play it for 15 minutes and it gets really annoying. And you did that on all 4? Not sarcasm, I am asking. I could only take about 5 min. Then I checked the first few seconds of the second vid. same. So I decided you should know, it may be keeping your numbers down. This is just feedback. I like most your stuff. Thats why I took the time to right this.
@@Johnny2Cellos As I just found this video, it would have been difficult for me to have commented on it earlier. I was merely giving you feed back. Nice to see it was accepted in the spirit given. Or is?

I just did another rewatch of Disenchantment, and I still think it does a lot of things really well. The worldbuilding and lore is interesting and I’m having fun diving into it, and the main characters are great. Unfortunately I think the place it’s lacking most is comedy, but it still gets me there every so often. Seasons 1 and 2 were produced together so I’m eager to see if they changed their approach at all for season 3
Dude, the review is fine; but please keep your moustache properly trimmed - I couldn't stop staring at those hirsute fangs the whole time, and it was hard to hear you over them. Just sayin'...
@@Johnny2Cellos Oh I get the argument is about pacing, but it's a subjective point. I don't think adding an extra few scenes to better flesh out the plot is a bad thing. The reason they made the length 28 minutes meant they wanted to flesh out their episodes in that time. The only reason most shows run between 22-24 minutes is so advertisements can run through them to fit into neat 30 minute slots for easier scheduling. Netflix doesn't have that limitation or reason to fall in line, so its shows that exceed the normal runtime shouldn't be considered a bad thing.
It was definitely a show that took me a few episodes to get into but the casting is what kept me coming back, I live for Eric Andre
Same, I didn't love the show the first couple episodes but I stayed for Luci alone. He reminds me of my cat, lol.

Disenchantment is my favorite. I did love futurama, but missed all of these Easter eggs. I love disenchantment even more
I thought it was a great start to a show thats still finding out where it fits in the Groening continuum 8/10!!!

NOW, needed more than ever. For real. You're the only one that put effort into it. Thx
Futurama = The Future
The Simpsons = The Present
Disenchantment = The Past
I know they're both Matt Groening works but I just want to say I really love how much the Happy little Elves look like the Elves in this show
disenchantment is such an underrated show it has so many foreshadows and inside jokes. it’s great.

Johnny 2 Cellos glad to see your channel and views getting exposure because of bojack. It was love at first sight of a show for me
Will they won’t they? I thought that was what that whole friendzone joke in the second episode (?) was the end of that.

Every time they do a grand sweeping shot of the kingdom I look at the castle and be like "the bitch gonna snap the cliff in half"
3:00 but.. they do explore outside the kingdom
they go on adventures
they go to elf land
then of course they find out bout the steampunk kingdom

nothing is wrong with the length it was just a terrible show lol Bojack could easily be 35 minutes and we'd love every second, could not binge DisE

Nevermind.
