Disenchantment's (mostly) AMAZING Final Season

  • Well, that’s all folks. Disenchantment has completed after 5 seasons and a grand total of 50 episodes. While I was initially on the fence about this show, over time I REALLY grew to love and appreciate its characters, lore, worldbuilding and storytelling. And now, I can honestly say, I am incredibly sad that it’s over. I’ve watched through the show so many times that it’s become a true comfort show. Though it has its flaws, it’s genuinely become one of my favorite animated series in recent memory. And fortunately, in my opinion, it delivered an incredibly satisfying and heartfelt conclusion with these final 10 episodes. I’ve got A LOT to gush about, so let’s do this one last time and talk about Disenchantment Part 5.

I'm honestly shocked that Oona became one of my favorite characters, but I adored her nearly beginning to end. She's just a great character, and a great mom to Bean. As someone who's stepmom stepped up to REAL mom when there was a big family shake up, there's so little representation of this kind of relationship. LOVE Oona, and I'm so glad she got the kind of attention and ending she deserved.

I loved that too! And loved that they didn't retcon Bean's biological mom being evil into some kind of heartwarming mother/daughter reconciliaton at the end where it turns out Dagmar was just 'misunderstood and trying her best all along' or something like that. I've seen so many representations of abusive motherhood in fiction but they always turn out to be stepmoms or 'not the real mom' like in the Disney Film Tangled. I can't express how happy it makes me that Disenchantment was willing to openly depict that yes your 'real' mom can be evil too.

My biggest issue with the final season is that Mora felt like an underdeveloped character, and when she died I was only able to feel sad for Bean's loss, not for the character herself being lost. As it is, she feels like she never felt significant beyond being a love interest, and her pieces of characterization didn't amount to anything particularly deep.

And in the final shot Dreamland disappears like it was all a dream and now its over because the series is over. There is an interesting meta element in the series, that it constantly challenges you to think what kind of show it is. Even God is handmade, a lightbulb that can be replaced. The Horror ride through dreamland you described, thats basically "Dreamland", a ride in an amusement park. So I thought it was lovely that they addressed it in the final shot. Its a dream and its over, the characters now in a place somewhere else.

Getting a Netflix short where the main characters run into each other for whatever reason would be great.
Maybe Elfo and Miri go on a holiday and find themselves on the island where Bean and Mora eloped and set up shop. Merkimer is left in charge. Shenanigans ensue, Derek and Bear Boy try to get fancy royal positions in the absence of the Queen and King Consort, and Zøg, Ursula, and Oona try to rein their kids in; there's room for extra storytelling there as well in how the kids grew up - the last few episodes show Derek with a proper goatee so we can infer that time does pass normally.
I'd love for there to be a brief character conflict where Elfo holds Bean accountable for having left without closure, and where she explains herself: I think she'd probably indicate that in some way she was fearful of saying goodbye because it felt final, and leaving without goodbyes would be her internal mechanism for telling herself 'if I don't say goodbye, it isn't over'. They reconcile, Bean visits Dreamland and sees what great work Miri and Elfo have done with it, and sees Zøg, Oona and the kids. Seeing in some way (maybe in a throwaway shot) how the Trøgs and Sea Trøgs fit into the new society / on the Moon with Alva would be great as well - I feel like we didn't get a good ending to their stories.
Luci uses his heavenly abilities or angel wings to somehow convey some sort of sign that he's watching over them...maybe through shadows dancing, or they hear him scatting or something. I'd LOVE for Luci to be able to manifest himself as the typical angel and devil trope on Bean's shoulders, but both of them (despite being dressed stereotypically) are encouraging her to do bad (not evil but unorthodox) things.
I love the show and I'm a big fan of Groening's work, loved the cast, but I wasn't so thrilled with the final half of Chapter 5 (I vaguely remember reading that they had to squish 2 seasons into 1, so I understand how it may feel rushed). So this was my little idea for what a Netflix Special might look like.

My only real complaint with the finale is how Dagmar was handled, it seemed like Bean defeated her a little too easily and the way she is taken out felt like it could have been in any other epidode/season finale imo. They really set her up as the most evil character so she kinda deserved a more powerful send off, i feel Bad Bean got a way more cathartic end then Dagmar and she was only in like 6 episodes of the whole show. Besides that it was pretty solid and the epilogue at the end wrapping things up in a nice almost bonus episode was really sweet and exactly how the series shouldve ended.

I really almost teared up at the end when Elfo realized Bean would run away from her own wedding & was begging for a chance to just say goodbye to her 😢 "Just let me say goodbye" Truly sad. I would've been fine w/all the dropped/unexplained plots if it weren't for that...maybe. That makes me think about those ppl who disregard their previous relationships when they start a romantic one.
Friendships are still important you can't just drop your friends because you got a girlfriend. Especially friends that helped you grow & sacrificed themselves for you. Elfo & Luci were her 1st friends, she had no one before them. I choose to believe she'll go back to see Elfo again, even if the castle is concealed.
I shall miss Oona's drug induced yell lol. Badass stepmomma who always showed up when help was needed.
I feel like there was plenty of time to wrap up certain storylines that were started in an elegant way. Like the family curse. Im also still confused about Dagmar & siblings plan. Did she promise her 1st born daughter to the devil? Why? What was the prophecy she held about Bean or was there even a prophecy? When did they paint that portrait of Bean in the crown? What was Dagmars plot & what was Bean's real role? It couldn't be to control all magic because how was she going to accomplish that when her plan leaked magic to all of Dreamland? What was w/the crown? Apparently they tried it on Jerry 1st before deciding they'd use it on Bean. Was it some type of magic conductor? And if Dagmar had magic within her just like Bean (didn't seem like either was stronger than the other) why didn't she use her own power? Why was she upset she married Satan instead when that meant she'd be queen of Hell? Also why the heck did they not even talk about the nearly identical previous battle fought in the exact same spot??🙄
Anyway, this started off as a silly lil cartoon i put on for background noise but i really liked it from the 1st season. If i view it now as lighthearted & silly then i won't be disappointed lol.

    • @abnormalusername
      @abnormalusername Рік тому

I also had put on the first season in the background as I did housework but I started to become really attached to the show as the new seasons came out. I'm not sure why they included the "let me say goodbye" scene, I could not help but think of it the way you did. I'm glad Elfo gets a happy ending.
For the nearly identical ancient battle, I wondered if they had somehow traveled to a possible future or something. Who cleared the bones out (maybe I forgot when this happened?) I guess history won't repeat itself again because of the unification of the different species in land with Mop girl and Elfo in power. It's weird that the ancient battle was not expanded upon. Who was the one who had the electric powers to wipe everyone out?
While several plot threads remain dangling, I do agree that in character development and the epilogues of their futures was satisfactory to me. I wonder if the comics will expand on any of this. With all the foreshadowing and attention to detail in the series, I think the writers would have came up with an explanation to all these plot threads.

I loved this video so much and I would love to see some character studies like you’ve done with Bojack. I’m sure you’ll want to start with the main trio but after that there are so many possibilities. My personal picks would probably be Alva and Satan himself. Alva is a character with such a unique conviction that not many other characters share. He’s just trying to further the field of “stience” by using magic to reach unexplored worlds, like probably Earth which I actually didn’t catch myself lol. He’s not necessarily evil, proved by his alliance with Hell which was primarily done for the advancement of his own city. As for Satan his arc in Season 5 was very underrated imo and is honestly one of the best. Luci being his son did make me eyeroll but his actions during the second half of the season especially once he’s learned Dagmar killed Luci really show some growth. Also the idea of Dagmar being so evil it intimidates literal Satan was one of my personal favorite jokes. Can’t wait to see what comes in the future!

Can't agree with you more about Disenchantment needing another 10 episodes. Heck, let's be honest here, it deserves another 10 seasons! Half-way through season 1, I was not impressed. In fact, I thought the series sucked and I stopped watching it, but after about a month, I revisited it and finished watching the first season, and I was hooked! What a great show!

I have always had this thing of starting a show thats already ended, fully watching it in like 2 weeks, and then wanting more despite not being so attached to it and, strangely enough, exactly the opposite happened with Disenchantment. I started watching it when it was only 2 parts, and i instantly grew to love every single character. I have watched this show for 4 years now, and when i found out this was the last season, i was expecting to (as usual for me) be left with a feeling of grief, wanting more.
Instead, once i watched all 10 episodes, i just couldnt bring myself to want more. I felt like it was a complete cicle, i didnt feel like anything was missing. It didnt feel like i was "loosing" the show, it felt like the show was kindly letting me go. That final scene with Elfo on the beach kind of resounded in my mind, like it was saying "you knew we wouldnt be here forever, and now its your turn, go and live your own adventure".
Aside from the whole series, the beaty in its finale is how the message trascended to be a meta-message. The final season was all about loss, grief, love, letting go and learning to accept change, and thats exactly what the finale teaches you. Yes, Lucy died, and yes, Bean and Elfo never got to say goodbye, but sometimes things just dont go as you wanted, and you have to learn to accept it, and let it go. Besides, the love and lessons the show left in us will stay beyond the end. Disenchantment might have ended, but it will always have a space in our memories, regardless of our personal changes.

I didn't bite the bullet on Disenchantment until several months after part 4 was released. And now I regret not hopping on sooner. I loved the final season so much, and I praise the cast and crew for being able to deliver a satisfying conclusion with less time than they were probably hoping for. I honestly thought the show was cancelled. I tried finding new information on it every month for like a year and most articles seemed to suggest it likely wasn't coming back, especially with Futurama returning on a completely different network. I was really excited and surprised when Disenchantment randomly shows back up on Netflix with "New episodes" and was honestly just glad we got a conclusion and a satisfying one at that.
I know the show had mixed reactions from viewers but I have a feeling this show might make a return years from now as the fan base grows. The world building is expansive and rich with lore and there is a lot more that could be explored and Bean, Lucy and Elfo can reunite on a new quest or adventure. But even if that doesn't happen, that's okay because at least the show actually gave a conclusion instead of leaving it's fans hanging.

One thing I couldn’t figure out was why Satan had wanted to marry the Queen of Dreamland. Why was the stipulated in the Maru-Hell contract? Once he was in Dreamland he didn’t really seem to use that to his advantage, or have an interest in the magic.

I loved most of it. The artwork was spectacular. Elfo's speech over Bean's headless corpse was very touching. The relationship between Bean and Mora was so well done. The final season was damn near perfect.
    Only a few quibbles:
    1) We didn't get resolution on the secret society (that I could tell, anyway).
    2) As much as I loved seeing Mora and Bean together, Mora should've stayed dead. Yes, of course Bean deserved happiness, but I feel like her big speech about love staying with you is wasted if Mora is resurrected. The battle ends up not costing her anything, and it kind of ruins the prophesy you alluded to. It was the finale, so I guess I can't complain about consequences sticking too much, but still, *because* it was the final episode, it felt like too clean a note to end on.
    3) Like you, I thought that God being killed was a brilliant move, and I was brought back. Maybe the writers weren't ready for the philosophical implications, but I would've liked it to stay that way for at least a little longer.

      2. Yes I agree Mora should’ve stayed dead it would’ve made the perfect ending Bean one but at what cost
      3. What should’ve happened when God died was since heaven wasn’t working anymore magic shouldn’t have either since he did explain Magic comes from heaven, earth, and hell, so Dagmar would lose her buff and that’s how they beat her
