Actually, those heroes who push the line, and survive, often get invited, to be a Space Marine. It's rare that one repel the invite, and stays... some do it for power, but most do it because of their brothers. But, most important: For The Emperor of Mankind and for our Holy Sanguinius!
This makes me think of the Adeptus Mechanicus more than the IG or SM. I keep picturing Skitorii, Secutors, and Warhounds just marching onto the battlefield to face the Heretic threat, opposite them a legion of far more experience Dark Mechanicus warriors.
It is the Adeptus Sororitas, they used to be some kind of military police for the Space Marine chapters, but are now the armed force of the "church", as they may not have "men in arms" in their service. Awesome Flintenweiber!
The Guard are the Hammer AND Anvil. the Space Marines are the hidden blade underneath the Long sword. The Men of the guard are the anvil and the tanks and arty the hammer. hence the reason many guard player hell "Im bring down the hammer" when they launch arty strikes.
I've been a fan since I was, like, 5; and even I don't know half the time XD I think the Primarchs, essentially the first 20 Space Marines ever created, and father of the 20 space marine chapters (Half of which turned to chaos), where scattered accross the galaxy by the Chaos gods, by the time they could be recovered, at least 2 of them; Sanguinius, the Blood Angel and Lemun Russ of the Space Wolves; were mutated. Sanguin had wings, Lemun was a werewolf.
by m42 most chapters do not operate on chapter strength or company strength except in dire emergencies. Space marines tend to get fielded from whatever multiple chapters can be spared in numbers as few as 3 or 4. These are still considered ridiculously powerful assets.
To be honest, the Guard have won plenty of wars on their own, without backup from any of the other armies of the Imperium - what a fair amount of people like to forget is that while the Space Marins are certainly the deadliest of the Emperor's soldiers (by and large) and while in the continuity they definitely see a lot of service, the fact is that they're extreme emergency forces - most guardsmen go their entire lives without seeing a marine and fight myriad wars in spite of that fact.
The Imperial Guard provide the numbers that Space Marines just do not have. They hold what the Imperial forces already have and make pushes where the enemy is weak (costing millions of lives). They can and do win major battles and wars but it takes time and alot of manpower. Space Marines have more individual skill and strength. They assault key targets but rarely have to hold the line. SMs speed up the process of winning wars, reducing the casualties inflicted on IG. They are both essential.
The majority of Chapter recruit their aspirants from those that A) survive to be 10 years old roughly, and B) those who have shown themselves to be the best of the best of the best in their own respective cultures. One can not join the Adeptus Astartes for personal elevation. The Chaplins and Librarians will break your mind and find that desire long before one would complete their initiation. There are cases on fully matured marines learning of desires they never experienced before.
in The Texas chainsaw massacre they call them Leather face and is frowned upon for his brutal chainsaw murders. In 40k They call him a Priest and carving the enemy bits with brutal chainsaw force gains him much respect.
One thing i really love about the Warhammer Pen & Paper RPG games ("Rogue Trader", "Dark Heresy" etc) is that, if the GM does his job right, is that they really nail home that the real heroes of the Imperium isn't some noble knights in shining armor with golden hair and perfect skin. No, the real heroes are rugged, battleworn, scarred mean sons of bitches who will never get any real credit for their actions but still keeps on doing their duty because the alternative is the doom of mankind.

The Space Marines are the favored elite, below them you have the ludicrously well geared Sisters who are not that far below in terms of armaments and a match in faith, and below both, you find the common Guardsman, equipped with none of the wintastic gear and with fear in his heart, yet, together with billions of brothers and sisters, he faces the horrors of the galaxy every day, while this galaxy spanning army that is the brunt of imperial might dies and bleeds in the millions daily. It is one thing to go with super gear and magic, but another entirely to go with almost nothing but your will to live and to fight.
Most Guardsmen regard the Marines as demigods. Few would ever see them in action even if they were in the same warzone. They certainly wouldn't feel resentment due to their absence..

I think what is more likely is those 2 unknown primarchs were disgraced in some way. Perhaps they were as bad as Horus, but unlike Horus, they never managed to do anything as notable as killing the God Emperor and starting a new legion; so they were stripped of their rank and doomed to fall into the depths of obscurity.
Ha...you have some reading to do. Lord Commander Solar Macharius commanded 7 army groups and efficiently brought thousands of worlds into Imperial rule in a mere 7 years. Note these are your average guardsmen, it just takes strong leadership. However Macharius was angry that he got to the edge of space in the radius of the Emperor, he wanted to continue on into the unknown. But yes, guardsmen were too afraid. Macharian Crusade...

Defend is the key word with out space marine help the guards only slow the enemy down they are used to confront the enemy in head on battle while the marines strike at their supply lines marines and guardsmen go hand in hand like bread and butter the guardsmen do the dying while marines do the damage
Ya the Black Templars are the only know group to recruit out of the guard, other than that the rest of the Chapters recruit on a "fine initiate that is worthy" policy

Without the Imperial Guard, the Imperium would fall to the endless numbers of Xenos. Without the Inquisition, the Imperium would fall to itself. Without the Astartes, the Imperium would fall to Chaos and the Tyranids. All are needed in the defense of the Imperium, and all deserve praise!
The emperor might have grown more forgiving afterwards :p who knows, and indeed it must be something horrible though wether it's as bad as chaos or worse, only gw knows.
The Space Marines can beat foes you cannot, a Daemon Prince and his hordes would annihilate almost all Guardsman forces, depending on the vehicles and units they have at their disposal. You should respect both equally, I am proud to fight and die alongside any Guardsman squad the same as any battle-brother of my chapter, The only exception to this rule to the point of hatred of said person, is when people fail to see that both are necessary and both are united in service to the God Emperor.
Actually to be correct half of the remaining legions turned to chaos. Of the 20 chapters 2 seem to have done something terrible as they're expunged from any imperial records and the other primarchs have an oath to not speak of their brothers. That's the 2nd en 13th legion. So of the 18 remaining, half indeed turned to chaos. But I advise you to read the horus heresy: Legion about the Alpha Legion, at the end you really start to think ;)
ugh, ok. The thing is that most Chapters have their own recruiting worlds. The Black Templars dont, so they recruit from the guard mostly because they dont have the time to do the recruiting on other worlds or cant because they arnt permitted, other chapters select out of the native population of their recruiting worlds, like the blood ravens and sub sector Arulia
Depends, the each of the Imperial Guard worlds, have a different environment. The Cadians are close to the eye of Terror, so they are disciplined and highly trained in marksmanship. And are in militarized state. The Moridian guard are highly trained in discipline, and excellent at urban fighting. Since they can create fortresses out of every street block with controlled stead volley fire. Catchans are superior jungle fighters, who are excellent at ambushing and close quarters. There's more...
True, and they are also bound to the ecclessiarch (the imperial church) and therefore only act in defense of shrineworlds, pilgimages and, when ordered by a cardinal or the ruling body of the ecclessiarch, as joined forces in a holy crusade.

Defend is the key word with out space marine help the guards only slow the enemy down they are used to confront the enemy in head on battle while the marines strike at their supply lines marines and guardsmen go hand in hand like bread and butter the guardsmen do the dying while marines do the damage
Ya the Black Templars are the only know group to recruit out of the guard, other than that the rest of the Chapters recruit on a "fine initiate that is worthy" policy

The Space Marines can beat foes you cannot, a Daemon Prince and his hordes would annihilate almost all Guardsman forces, depending on the vehicles and units they have at their disposal.
You should respect both equally, I am proud to fight and die alongside any Guardsman squad the same as any battle-brother of my chapter, The only exception to this rule to the point of hatred of said person, is when people fail to see that both are necessary and both are united in service to the God Emperor.

Actually to be correct half of the remaining legions turned to chaos. Of the 20 chapters 2 seem to have done something terrible as they're expunged from any imperial records and the other primarchs have an oath to not speak of their brothers. That's the 2nd en 13th legion. So of the 18 remaining, half indeed turned to chaos. But I advise you to read the horus heresy: Legion about the Alpha Legion, at the end you really start to think ;)

ugh, ok. The thing is that most Chapters have their own recruiting worlds. The Black Templars dont, so they recruit from the guard mostly because they dont have the time to do the recruiting on other worlds or cant because they arnt permitted, other chapters select out of the native population of their recruiting worlds, like the blood ravens and sub sector Arulia
Depends, the each of the Imperial Guard worlds, have a different environment. The Cadians are close to the eye of Terror, so they are disciplined and highly trained in marksmanship. And are in militarized state.
The Moridian guard are highly trained in discipline, and excellent at urban fighting. Since they can create fortresses out of every street block with controlled stead volley fire.
Catchans are superior jungle fighters, who are excellent at ambushing and close quarters.
