  • This is my ranking of the 5 best Metal concerts from a staggering array of 100+ live acts witnessed in 2023. Among the metal bands that I saw in 2023 were legends like Metallica, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Obituary, Kiss, Manowar, The Who, Ghost, Deep Purple, Sepultura, Pantera, Megadeth, and a myriad of other heavy metal bands spanning every corner of the metal universe. On some of them I did a concert review about the experience but not on them all. From classic rock, black metal, death metal, thrash metal, metalcore and more I bring you the ultimate selection of the 5 best metal live concerts of 2023.

    I'm 61 now. Best concerts for me was: Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, (April 22,1979), Genesis, (1976), Metallica, (1992), King Crimson, (1984), and KISS in 1979. You've seen way more than me in my lifetime, but you didn't get to see the epic bands I saw in their PRIME, LOL.
    Cheers to you man. All the best to you in 2024 and beyond !!! \,,/..\,,/

      Man, you saw some great performers in the prime of their career! I'm a little younger than you (56), and WAS fortunate enough to see some of my favorite bands in their prime like Maiden's and Twisted Sister (first concert, 1984) Triumph and Helix (1985) , Priest and Krokus (1985), Dio (1987), and a bunch of others. Seen probably a couple hundred bands from bars to festivals in the 40 years and so happy that some of my favorites are still putting out new material and touring! Saxon, my favorite band, is a band who consistantly keeps putting out new albums every couple of years and I've seen them about 8 times in the last 10 years! What would you say is your favorite? Mine would be a tie between Maiden's Powerslave tour and Dio's Dream Evil tour! Both were at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and both were mind blowing! Foo Fighters at Molson amphitheatre on a hot summer night with the warm breeze blowing off lake Ontario gets an honourable mention!

Artists often have the time to come to your area and get reviewed before heading to my general geographical area (Copenhagen+Scania+possibly Gothenburg). Best concert of 2023? As for Deep Purple, saw them in 1973 at the Western Idaho Fairgrounds in Boise as a kid. 🤘🤘🤘 I am a US NAVY veteran and retired Army. While in the military for over two decades and stationed all over the world, I was super fortunate to see a $hitload of concerts. While stationed in Germany, Mannheim, I would either rent a car or take the ICE around Europe. From Monsters of Rock and Super Rock both in 1992, a week apart…it was heaven for a Rivethead. From Donnington to Seoul, South Korea…boy. UP THE IRONS 🤘🤘🤘

    This would probably piss off some Pantera fans (but I would actually love to see it) mix in a Black Label Society song in the setlist and give Zakk the mic for a quick second to perform "Suicide Messiah" Probably get blasted for it but my skin is thick.. The Rocco Siffredi comment had me rolling. 🤣 I wish I could get out and see the amount of shows you do, man. Thanks for sharing.

    • @metalandrockzone
      @metalandrockzone  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks James, I think that would be great to have Zakk to some BLS songs and even some Zakk Sabbath stuff, that way they could keep the Pantera part to some solid 15 songs or so and maybe throw in 4-5 cool extras like this. I love the idea. I am indeed lucky to be able to see all these bands, there are so many that come through here that if I wanted I could easily see like 3-4 international bands pr week. As for Rocco, the funny thing is that I was his friend on fb some years ago but then wrote him some bs when drunk and he deleted me!

    I saw pantera with metallica in arlington and pantera with lamb of god in the woodlands TX. The band AND the crowd was unbelievable, so much energy i was looking around and the stadium looked like boiling water with everyone jumping around. crowd was louder than the PA and at one time they had 6 mosh pits full circle. Ive been to too many shows i can remember and by far when Pantera was playing in dallas was the most controlled amount of chaos you can see, you can literally feel the buzz in the stadium, it felt like at any split second a full on riot can kick off we were so hyped to see Pantera.

    Pantera was amazing. I never saw them in the 90s, which I regret, but it was an amazing show because the band was tight and the setlist was great. For sentimental reasons Pantera and KISS (First time seeing live) were my favorites, but the concert that really blew me away was Gojira. The energy was insane.

    That's quite sick! 100 bands is more than I've been to in my life LOL.
    Want some recommendations for next year? Japanese band Lovebites is heading to Europe next year. Been put up for some festivals in Spain and France already, but I BET they will have some concerts in Europe, with their blend of power/trash/speed etc. If you love 80s, you WILL love them.
    Next is the 3 mexican sisters in The Warning. Don't be fooled by their age. They've been doing music since they could walk. It shows. They have already warmed up for GnR, Foo Fighters and Muse, who also invited them to warm up on some of their EU/UK shows. It didn't go unnoticed, so MTV invited them to 2023 VMA. They might be the next big thing. Could be last time you see them play for less than a 1000. They have some gigs in EU in April. Be fast because most are sold out.
    Good studio band, but really shines on stage.
    I wanted to add another Japanese band here. Like Band-maid... But seen no concerts put up for next year... exept online or in Japan. Probably not the US since they during a year had about 30 gigs there.. + some festivals.

    Hypocrisy was founded in 1990 in Ludvika Sweden, by Peter Tagtgren. The First two albums are nothing in common with the later albums, they're oldschool death metal, inspired by the early florida Death Metal scene, then they switched and started doing more doomy/melodic stuff. Hypocrisy last year had a few bad concerts, Peter was sick or the sound at some venues is bad. This year Peter focused more on PAIN and he only played Festivals with Hypocrisy, so i feel like the rest of the band wanted to play the songs much more than last year, also Hypocrisy is either really good in a club with less than a 1000 people... or death metal festivals, like Brutal Assault. Still Happy to being able to see them mentioned, as they're really underrated now. Used to be one of the biggest melodeath bands in the late 90's and early 2000's.
    My list for this year is gonna be as follows:
    5 - Pantera, i wanted to chill out, but then they started i went into the pit and i had fun... it was amazing.
    4 - Ensiferum, i saw them live last year as well, but they performed in front of less people this year, so the crowd energy was better, they had a mid sound, thing is, in the venue they're playing, the sound is really shit usually.
    3 - Kataklysm, First time seeing them, oh wow, i was just stunned, the sound was great, the crowd was great, the energy was top notch and i thought it would be my favorite concert of the year... but...
    2 - Nile, I wasnt the biggest of Nile fans prior to the concert, but i listened to some of their music, then they started playing and holy fucking shit, they played at the same venue as Kataklysm in the same month ~ 750 people in attendance, but everyone was on their feet, jumping, screaming, moshing, having fun, the performance was amazing and the energy they gave off was sick. Brutal show and a brutal performance.
    1 - PAIN, Being the Peter Tagtgren fan that i am, it isnt a surprise, but i didn't expect to enjoy PAIN live more than any of the bands on the list, thing is Peter gave off a lot of energy during the concert, they where interacting with each other on stage and the sound was okay, not good, because in that venue, you just can't have a good sound, but everything else made up for it and i am biased.
    Honorable mentions for me: I am Morbid, Vulvectomy, Possessed, Engeneer of Death and last but not least Askeesi.

    • @metalandrockzone
      @metalandrockzone  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. I am a big Hypocrisy fan myself so I was very happy to see this gig in the summer, Tagtren clearly is a genius of some sorts. I missed Ensiferum last time they came here, Nile I saw last summer but it was middle of the day and didn't really get me. Pain I also missed as they were the last night at BasinFire Festival and I went home early (not drunk, just tired). I am Morbid actually could have made my honourable mentions, they were amazing at Brutal Assault and better then when I saw them the year before. I need to check Askeesi and Vulvectomy, don't really know these bands.

    • @metalandrockzone
      @metalandrockzone  5 місяців тому

      The copyright is not a biggie for YT as such as then the artist can actually make money from my video (revenue share) I have been considering this to be honest but it is a bit more work on the editing part and also I feel that the sound from a phone recording often doesn't deliver what I feel in the arena/club. But I might give it a try and see how it comes out. Thanks for watching.

    "i saw over 100 bands live"
    It may sound idiotic, but how is this possible? I know you explained it, but it's still logistically impossible.
    And the second question is also very serious. Where did you get the money for this? After all, it costs tens of thousands of dollars per year (tickets, travel, hotels, food). Being at such a huge number of concerts a year, you can't have a rather ordinary job from Monday to Friday. So you either come from a wealthy family 😋 or you run a business yourself that doesn't interfere with the time you devote to concerts. I'm interested in this from a purely technical point of view, how do you manage it all?

    • @metalandrockzone
      @metalandrockzone  5 місяців тому

      Well, I have a few things in my favour here. Firstly here in Prague there are gigs on average 3 times a week that I can go and see metal/rock. Each gig has at least 3 bands and the cost of each gig is probably about 20-40 euros which I guess is kind of low vs elsewhere. Then I go larger gigs as well and there the same 3 bands and I always see the opening acts. Then the festivals, one of them has 150 bands over 5 days and the other about 40 bands. The entrance to these are like 100-150 Euro. I never drink at concerts or festivals so there are not much other costs for me. Obviously when I go somewhere further away I need a place to stay etc but that is maybe 3-4 times a year. So yes I do spend quite a lot on this but I think it is less than one would guess and I don't spend money on a lot of other stuff to be honest.

      @@metalandrockzone Ok now I understand. You just live in the perfect place. I live in a small town in the south of Poland, so such a situation is impossible for me, and I would also like to attend as many concerts as possible.
