@@StarbonsaiMaushold to me was Clefairy when Clefairy wasn’t available until Teal Mask. @@Connowot387 i get what you mean, for me clefairy is more support while maushold has more offensive pressure. But ever since wellspring became a thing, its kinda just maushold but better.... it gets follow me, encore, better type advantage as well as ivy cudgel just being a better move competitvely.... i think theres a place for maushold but at the moment its hard to fit it on any vgc team
@Starbonsai The biggest advantage to Maushold right now is in closed team format, it's hard to tell if it's Friend Guard Follow Me or Technician Population Bomb. I have a team in particular that uses both Follow Me Maushold *and* Ogerpon with Annihilape to fake out opponents.
I've been running Maushold since the beginning of the gen, and I find that its third greatest asset (aside from its two signature moves) is its speed tier at 111. It is JUST BARELY faster than Iron Moth, Ogrepon and Latios (All on 110) among a few others, and revenge kills them easily with population bomb. Beyond that, it only needs a single tidy up boost to outrun Deoxys Speed, but being to able to switch in after a KO and either get an easy kill or force a switch is one of its greatest assets. It also has Encore but everyone knows Encore is good.
As the guy who puts Maushold on the map for ou, it’s not that hard for opportunities to knock off rocky helmets in ou with the distribution being available to more Pokémon, for example I hit 2022 two weeks ago with azumarill and Maushold with jolly BD azumarill with knock off for corv and skarm. It’s a fun Pokémon that can work well and threaten a sweep or trade a big threat to the team.
Maushold is not a bad pokemon the current ou metagame power level is just vary high at the moment, if Maushold was in a less powerful metagame then i am sure it would be somewhat viable.
Maus is currently insane in UU, not consistent because anything can run helmet, but it just casually murders all UU ghost types with beat up because it's just weak armor ceruledge and polteageist.
Mainly because its a fair bit worse than wide lens, at least in my opinion. Rocky helmet isn't common enough to be a huge issue, so you'd rather have the power increase from wide lense. Without wide lense, you often aren't dealing enough damage with population bomb to justify using maushold
I loved using a support maushold (focus sash + friend guard) with follow me, encore, thunder wave and super fang... those lil things move fast! edit: vgc format
I play a little bit of uu but i'm not that great but here's my experiences i've been mostly using cinnico (nicknamed divorced maushold) because it's sorta like maushold with a bit more coverage in the multi hit moves and technichian maushold pop bomb does more damage than cinnico but, again, i can run rock blast and loaded dice to hit ghost types as well my main problem with cinnico (which i assume is similar for maushold since they have basically the same stats) is that it dies instantly to basically anything and has trouble setting up to sweep i should probably build a team with maushold instead of their clearance bin cousin
Between the two, I much prefer maus, because pop bomb is funny and has slightly more bulk, though I have seen a few people talking about Cinncino being a decent pick.
I'd appreciate if I could recognize from the title or thumbnail or something that the video is going to be from the context of smogon singles metagame. It's a common complaint I have with competitive pokemon content creators tbh, you never know which format the video is going to be about.
Agree with you. Both Cinccino and Maushold's main weakness is rocky helmet, rough skin and iron barbs. Thankfully, Cinccino has access to knock-off to remove the helmet, making it easier to sweep
Cinccino doesn't have population bomb yes but it has pretty decent coverage and better attack stat, while it's not just a straight up upgrade (Maushold will do a lot more to neutral targets) it's a bit more flexible imo.
I tried out mausehold for a bit near the start of ou because I figured it was a way to clear hazards against enemy gholdengo. I stopped using mausehold when I realized it was completely useless against gholdengo and other ghost types. It also was so frail it was really hard to find opportunities to switch in and set up regardless. Video checks out.
I used it in vgc cause after you overrides the -6 priority of trick room. And even if my hatrerine was ko'ed before it could set up trick room, after you still enabled my main strategy Choice specs tera fire eruption torkal
Garchomp is curently really good in UU which not only reduces mausholds viability, but also make it so Cincinno is actual competion, because while it doesnt hit as hard, it still has Tidy Up and technician Triple Axel. Furthermore, mons like Mamdibuzz and Talonflame make for great Defogers in UU, though I still think Talon has OU viability, seeing as how it eats up Tusk, can threathen gholdengo with fire stab etc
Ironically, Scizor is both great against Maus, and great with it, due to resisting its two main attacks, and having bullet punch, but also baiting in common rocky helmet pokemon to knock off.
Maushold cant live a hit to it really be used at its fullest even so u will need to build a team around it to see usage be worth the cost it has more going against it then for it be steel and ghost
The thing that checks maus the best isn't really gholdengo I'd say, but rocky helmet. Gholdengo have to come in and often risk eating a bite on switchin. Plus it only forces maus out, not kill it on switchin. Rocky helmet lets you ko maus on switchin.
The opposite of this can also be true, such as Gen 1 Golem. Golem actually beats Rhydon 1-on-1 since both 2HKO with Earthquake, but aside from that Rhydon is much better. If Rhydon didn’t exist, Golem would certainly be OU, but Rhydon’s existence makes Golem worse even though Golem has a good matchup against it.
You suggest Maushold would actually become worse in OU if Gholdengo, its most common check, was banned, and then you point out that Maushold is rated higher in viability rankings in UU, where Gholdengo is in fact banned. This contradicts your theory for if Gholdengo were to be banned from OU. Gholdengo and other ghost types aren't even Maushold's biggest weakness though. It's its frailty. Even with the power of population bomb, it does an accuracy check for each hit, unlike other multi-hit moves. Once it misses, it stops rolling for another hit. This makes its effective base damage lower than 300 on average. While tidy up can help compensate for this, this is why its frailty is its biggest weakness, because so many Pokemon can just one shot it when it tries to set up. Not to mention that priority moves have been very common for a long time now. Don't get me wrong, Maushold is a good Pokemon, and as with most Pokemon, its weaknesses can be worked around with proper teambuilding, but to say a specific Pokemon being a check is actually its greatest weakness, or even rocky helmet, is a bit Farfetch'd.
Issue with that is that without wide lens, Population Bomb does its damage much less consistently. Without Wide Lens, Maushold just isn't the threat it normally is.
Maushold's greatest weakness is that it blows hard, Maushold's greatest strenght is that it blows so hard that nobody builds against Maushold
