In this video I go over how the personification of Animals, Objects and now Food in Pixar's short films utilize the pre-conceived notions of their real life counterparts to tell a story.

I did but literally it's just him talking
It’s not the actual film oh then I did too 😂

VALEN PICOOO
One of the best cinema memories is seeing this short and hearing damn near everyone in the theater gasp. Definitely was not expecting that one scene lol
Umm what? They have short films in cinema?! And people watch them too? They don’t do that here. Also going to cinema for a 10minute film seems kinda redundant
@@peptobismolveins They show short films sometimes before showing certain kids movies. Chill out, bro.
@@peptobismolveins you sure you know the meaning of redundant, bro?
Fr
Yeah
In case you don’t know, in Chinese language “bao” means this kinda food as well as “treasure” which is commonly used to describe your kid, kinda similar to the usage of “honey” or “sweetheart”
Aww🥺 that makes the movie 100 times more precious
which Chinese language may I ask? or is it all the same? Cantonese?
@@soulsnape26 mandarin. When in doubt, mandarin.
Ah yes, when your child tries to move out you C O N S U M E him
..... 😂
This made me laugh more than i can 😂😂😂
I think it was symbolic of how in real life, she said goodbye forever to her child and it was the “death of her child” in her eyes....she was angry and said permanently goodbye when he moved away and got married, and symbolically it felt like death for her.
In the imaginary “my child is a dumpling fantasy” analogy world (which is what we visually see in the film), it was her eating the dumpling and never seeing him again
i seriously don't get how it confuses you! yes, the very idea of it is ridiculous but it is so real
So I sorry so a don't like bao be like a baby
I gotta admit; this short made me cry
SAAAME I WAS IN TEARS

Yeah its about a onion afterall
This is the most honest clickbait I've ever seen
Yeah normally people just don't care, but let's give a SHOUTOUT to this youtuber😚🥳🥳
?
I dont like it.
Damn, as an Asian daughter, that hit hard because you can pinpoint the exact moments in your life where you and your parents did what Bao and his mom did. The starting to want to play with friends, the wanting to eat and drink whatever you want, the wanting to go out at night, the wanting to get into a relationship, and the moving out. I haven't gotten to the last two parts yet but I sure hope my parents don't try to hurt me like Bao's mom did when I eventually do them.
If they are good parents (not saying they aren't) they won't try to hurt you but both of you may still get hurt. Just keep communication open and ask yourself if what they are doing would be from a place of not wanting to loose you before you see malice in that situation. May you always know your parents love you.
@@rejektppc thanks, i hope it turns out well
@@standnamemercuria7079 you're welcome and me too.
Prepare to be eaten...
If Bao was a daughter, she would have been eaten immediately, or given away to some creepy man.
When I first heard of a movie about a dumpling coming to life, it sounded like the dumbest thing ever. I did not expect it to be this deep and make me cry. Also, I just realized I should call my mom.
If you don't mind, how did it go?
good for u ig
I was waiting for this to be on UA-cam ever since I first saw this in the cinema

Then you obviously have different taste so why would you choose to see the incredible movie?

I think this is what really happened:
The mom and her son must have got a real fight (like the dumpling and her) because the son was leaving her but the mom doesn’t want to let him go. After the son left the mom must have got to depression and started to see things then the dumpling reminded her of her son so when the dumping was about to left she ate the dumpling because she doesn’t want to lose another son like before so the son came back after years an reunited with her mom :)
Spoiler 😒
I'm pretty sure the dumpling was supposed to be her son
@@Beneciaferns stupid biss she not a spoiler it’s called an THOUGHT so I advise you to shut up please and ty! ^_^

Damn I just saw this today. This reminds me of my homeboy Andy so much. He lived in Chinatown with his parents. Only child. Round head. Good friend. He had a shaky relationship with his folks until he picked up a gf who was black not white like in this but they made up and surprisingly, his parents were cool cuz we tend to not have the best luck with Asian parents. His mom was just happy to have him back around and his gf was the one who told him how important it was to stay tight with them. And his parents are cool too.
😊💓💪💪💪Great
Did Andy get ate
I think that food deserve do die
@@munizasuleman1474 I think you need hooked on phonics. Come back to the internet when you learn how to write better english.
I think her eating the dumpling was her accepting that her son was not the baby she always saw him as, he had grown up and was no longer this little fragile thing she needed to protect and she realized this when she ate that version of him
I think when she ate the dumpling to keep him with her forever, she realized trying to keep her son when he was ready to leave would be harmful to him. Just like eating Bao was harmful, she understood she had to let her son go or else cut him off from his adult life.
I think she did it out of frustration, fear and anger without thinking, which is why she showed remorse. It was a careless act.

I am very happy this video was entitled: 'Bao short animation - Analysis and commentary'.
I remember when I was 12, I went to the cinemas with my dad to watch incredibles two. Before the movie started, this played. As someone with asian parents, this hit hard and genuinely made me cry. I will never forget the truth behind this simple short story and how it made such a big impact on my little 12 year old mind
ME TO!!!! WHERE CINEMA ARE YOU IN!? TAIPING CINEMA!? ARE YOU MALAY!? ME AND MY FAMILY WAS WATCHING INCREDIBLES 2 AND IDK WHAT HAPPENED BUT THIS SHORT FILM POP UP
it is all about EMPTY NEST SYNDROME !
the mom loses her son to this girl b4 the film started. she misses him so much that everything around her turned into an *imaginary son*, such as the BAO she made. she pampers it, nurses it, cuddles it to satisfy THE VOID in herself.
BUT... all in her mind when the imaginary son leaves her, she LOSES IT, so much so she swallows it to prevent THE LOSS TO HAPPEN AGAIN.
after all, the BAO-SON is only an imaginary thing she made up. she cant stop her son leaving her BUT she can prevent something like a BAO (which is meant for consumption) she created to hurt her again.
the whole film is this REMINISCENCE about her relationship with her son. and it ends beautifully. she does not lose a son, she GAINS a daughter!
I needeed so much an explaination, thank you

I knew from the start that the Bao was symbolism for a mother unable to process her only child was growing up, but when she ate the Bao my first thought was, "Well, shit, how is the fiance gonna take this news? 'Yea, my fiance tried to leave with me but his mom got so upset she ate him.' What are you gonna do about it?"
I can't explain that. You won.
As a Chinese woman and the oldest kid in my family, my mom used to tell me that she wished I stayed in her belly, as this was how she could protect me forever.
Creator Domee Shi said something similar in her own relationship with her mother.
Arguably the best Disney short ever

Love this, so so cute. The mother misses her son so much she dreams he is a 🥟 bao 🥰
*bao, not dumpling
Seems like a scary dream xd
Bao in Chinese means dumpling bun and baby at the same time
@@chriswong9851 Im Chinese and the dumpling bun bao is spelled 包, pronounced bāo, while the baby bao is spelled 宝, pronounced ba-ow (the accent isn't on my keyboard lol)
Same way they treat dogs in some Asian household, They consume them afterwards
Great film shows a mothers love for her children, I had a chance to go away with my family but it meant being in a different country away from my mother and father, at the end I did not take the great new opportunity cause my mother and father was addicted to my children so I stayed in my old job to keep my family together and happy, never leave unless it is vital cause momey never replaces happiness
Not all mothers have love for their children are you hallucinating or something or do you really not know anything about the world? There are even mothers who rape their babies and mentally and physically torture their kids and some even kill their kids without any remorse so how do you even generalize an entire gender based on a cartoon movie?!
@@AD-pw9tj relax yourself I’m taking in general no one’s love can beat a mothers love for her child and your taking it to come different lever

Its so funny imo when she eats him
I know its suppose to be sad
I saw this commercial when I was maybe 6 or 7 in the movie theaters. I'm traumatized to this day I can't even watch this movie bc of it 💀💀
Her son she must have called him her little dumpling hence the film she was dreaming about what happened with her son and was finally reunited in the end I loved it this is the cutest short film 🥰
Why is everyone complaining saying this is clickbait? I was going in expecting an analysis of it and I like it
Bra when she ate the thing a random guy in the cinima said "damn thats sum deep sh*t"
But like who takes care of that thing?
You have to eat it someday
I'd eat it in 2 seconds

Her eating Bao is a metaphor for her giving him up and letting him become independent.

It's amazing, that Pixar could tell a story this in-depth within 7 minutes. And with their other shorter-form animations.

Live long and prosper! I really enjoyed your video dude. Your video really helped me more understand about Bao. Bao really made me cry and every time I want to watch it again I have to boost up my confidence to watch it again, because I don't like watching sad stuff, because Bao reminds me of the relationship I have with my mother. But then again watching Bao makes me imagine on how I love and have a relationship with my mother. Or anyone for those who have watched Bao. I really enjoyed your video man and I think I'm gonna watch this again and again.
