Air travel chaos ‘could get worse’

  • Hundreds of flights and package holidays have been cancelled and many flights have been delayed across the UK, with the travel industry blaming a staff shortage due to a lack of government help during the pandemic.
    The deputy general secretary of The Prospect union, which represents thousands of staff across air traffic control, said “things could get worse this summer before they get better.”
    German holiday giant TUI has already cancelled 200 flights between now and 30 June, which has disappointed many people hoping to get away for the half-term and Platinum Jubilee weekend.

    "losing workers during the pandemic"
    BS, they fired or pushed workers to resign with pay cuts and now with shortsighted planning they expect these workers, that were ( and still are ) paid peanuts , rush back at the snap of fingers from the same directors, managers and supervisors that at in reverse enjoyed keeping their job and working from home during pandemic ...

    • @Carolina-ws1jc
      @Carolina-ws1jc 2 роки тому +8

      Yes BA did exactly that to me. Some of our ex-crew have gone back as they missed it so much…for peanuts and a much lower salary than they were on! Thankfully, I’ve found a new career as a student nurse, and I wouldn’t have gone back out of principle anyway, despite missing my colleagues terribly.

      Absolutely. They got rid of thousands of ground staff, cabin crew and pilots so they could chop and cut all the TnC's ready to re hire at lower wages, less holiday and less benefits. They're not short of staff - they're short of ethics.

      The compensation for a cancelled or delayed flight is massive . The problem is new recruits cannot get through the security process is massively delayed . Also people are still on the sick with covid . I was delayed last week for 5 hours , my compensation was £220 . I only paid £67 for the flight . Airlines do not do this on purpose .

      They claim that there are staff shortages but im not convinced. I believe the increasing cost of fuel is proving to be as much of an issue. If it was staff shortages, then why didn't they react sooner. Most of the people that booked holidays, did so months ago and the holiday companies knew that and would have staffed up to deal with it. The rise in fuel prices due to the conflict in Ukraine was more of a shock. The public are being taken for a ride, or not as the case may be.

      it's pretty simple - immigrants from lower economy countries who were coming to UK accepting lower wages are no longer allowed to come and work in the UK. British people must take the jobs now but the problem is british people will not work for peanuts and zero hour contracts or whatever insecure jobs these companies offer. People who voted for brexit voted for this so deal with it
