    In today's video, I break down one of the most controversial topics on basketball shooting and that is the "Perfect Set Point". I give you my thoughts on what is truly the best option when it comes to your own basketball shooting mechanics, and how the basketball training industry as a whole has the entire topic of basketball set point timing COMPLETELY WRONG! Make sure you pay close attention because set point timing is oftentimes a huge issue for a ton of young players! I give you 3 Pro-level shooting tips to help you instantly make more shots, while fixing your own set point timing. These simple basketball shooting techniques are super easy to implement for players at every level. By implementing these tips into your game you can almost immediately skyrocket your shooting percentage!
    My first talking point I dive in and explain to you what a set point is when shooting a basketball. Understanding a good setpoint vs a bad setpoint is super important when trying to self diagnose whether or not your set point is dialed in. I explain how set point timing is different from player to player, there are numerous reasons why set point timing is different for all players. Typically the player's size and athleticism is a huge part in differing set points. We look at an example of some of the best players in the NBA guys like Lebron James, and Lakers great Kobe Bryant both had set points that were above their head, but when we look at their size and athleticism they can both get away with a much higher set point than most people. I also give you some examples of the best shooter in the NBA having relatively low setpoints guys like Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, and Trae Young. The reason for this is because they need a little more force to really shoot with peak fluidity from 3 point range. So the biggest thing that most players need to focus on is to stop worrying about where you think your set point needs to be because the facts of the matter are that even players at the highest level of the game have different set points.
    My second pro tip to help you instantly make more shots while making sure you have a set point that is optimized for your size and age is that "A low setpoint isn't always bad" This is something we see a lot of the best shooters in the world implement into their game guys like Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard. They both have relatively low setpoints, however, both are elite shooters and can essentially get their shot off whenever they want no matter who the defender is. A big misconception in shooting is that if you have a low set point you are more susceptible to getting your shot blocked. What we have learned from years of studying the best shooters in the NBA and all over the world is that that myth is simply not true. The more important factor when it comes to shooting the ball and not getting your shot blocked is your shot preparation. If your shot prep is dialed in you will never get your shot blocked. So make sure you are working on your shot preparation if you want to really optimize your basketball shooting mechanics.
    My last shooting tip to help you instantly make more shots is "Confidence"! Confidence is something we see in ALL of the great shooter's guys like James Harden and Damian Lillard do a great job of trusting their preparation so when they are needed to hit daggers in the game it comes easy to them. The truth of the matter is if you are wanting to become the best possible player you can be you need to put in the work to get to gain the confidence to hit big shots. As I say in the video reps + success = CONFIDENCE. Make sure to implement these pro secrets to lights out shooting into your game today!

  • @Chandasouk

    Nice work breaking down these misconceptions. I used to watch a shit ton of Rick Torbett Better Basketball DVDs and he swore that shooting ten toes to the rim was the only way to shoot perfectly. Coaches like Chip engelland also teaches this but it really depends on what's comfortable for the player. The same goes for set points.

  • @utkucelep4940
    @utkucelep4940 4 роки тому +16

    Doesn't the set point also change with respect to your distance to the hoop? Arm strength is generally enough for mid-range shots (for grown-ups) and they are also mostly contested by D, so set point gets higher naturally. For 3-pointers with enough space from D, set point is lower and shot is on the way up.

  • @_Maxten

    i have a low set point but I've always had a rip hamilton mid range game and i always tried to jump high while releasing quick at the same time like JJ redick. i realized that if i wanted to be more productive i could either make my set point higher so i can get those middies off more often- or expand my range. now i shoot more threes than ever before. like i dont really pull up as much any more in ISO because i know i have range now.
    point is, your set point only matters depending on what type of player you're gonna be. if you're ok with taking only wide open shots then by all means, you can be a shawn marion. but if you want to post fadeaway like kobe, a higher set point is kinda necessary for that style of play.

    I KNOW I'm the oldest here. 65 and I shoot every day. My natural set point is way over my head but I'm trying to max out distance with a lower one. Release off the hand is the issue for me. More palm on the ball and rolling it off my hand as opposed to pushing it with my hand is what I'm striving for. Hard to teach an old dog.

    well the thing is that i feel like my shot technique is wrong, so i tried to do the original technique, but my shot goes pretty weak and doesn't make it to the basket (and has mega backspin on it) no matter how quickly i flick my wrist, the ball still won't make it to the basket if i shoot a 3-pointer, so idk how to address the flaw in my shooting form. like when i use my own technique i don't have a setpoint i just do one single motion from the bottom and onto the target. that's the only way i make shots but it's pretty inconsistent, i haven't found a way to fix my technique yet, so i'd appreciate the help of anyone that got what's wrong abt my technique, thanks a lot ❤️

      You are probably out of HS by now, but, hustle more in transition, be the best defender, improve boxing out/crashing and rebounding, be extra vocal on defense. Make purposeful cuts and set great screens, be the 1st in the gym and the last to leave. Lead by example. Destroy everyone in conditioning. Dive for loose balls. And cheer everyone on with positivity and encouragement, even in practice or for seemingly small things.
      And you will become the true captain of the team while earning respect. Then, you won't need the ball, because it will find you.

    • @Scaimusic
      @Scaimusic 8 місяців тому

      Having a healthy set point will slow your shot down, but you are actually shooting correctly now. With practice it will speed back up. And you should now re-learn what an open shot is, by also working on creating better space, feeling the defense with your legs, and attacking from all 3 levels, as to be difficult to figure out. Tempo changes is also key in getting space.

      Get set by getting on the balls of your feet, then start your set point between the upper chest and top of forehead...make adjustments...set point is about lifting the ball up, this will force you to go in a upward direction, aim for the front rim or the links on the rim. Focus on hand/eye coordination, not form. You are welcome.

    I've never even heard of a "set point" until today. The myths this guy is referring is not in regards to the set point, its the release, where you release the ball. Are you releasing it over your head or are you releasing infront of your head. A set point shouldn't even be a real thing! Said even by this guy, it doesn't matter where your set point is. High release on the other hand.. is better, take for example every single basketball player that goes to the free throw line, they have a higher release. It's mechanics, less room for error.

    Man what is the perfect set point for a 13 year old?

      At your forehead, but make adjustments lower if needed. Lift ball up from that set point and guide it to the front rim. Make sure you are on the balls of your feet too. Thank me later.

    This guy is absolutely incorrect a low set point does not work past elementary level for nearly everyone. I like how he points out Curry lol a one in a million example. Set point should be high.
