I have a Velux skylight sitting at my local big box store with the flashing kit. I will pick it up today when they open. New roof installation will start first week of February 2021. My roofer fought long and hard against replacing the existing skylight and wanted to remove and roof over the existing skylight saying they all leak eventually. Existing skylight is from 1998 and no signs of leaking( not sure of the brand it came with the house) Wife wanted skylight so we will have a skylight. After looking around we chose Velux because of the 10 year no leak warranty. I will video the installation of the new one for warranty purposes to show it was installed by a licensed roofing contractor per the factory directions.
How did your installation go? Our roofing company also wanted to fill in our skylights, but we kept 3 (we had 15). It has been a week since our install and it is clear that this roofing company has no experience installing skylights (probably why they wanted to fill them all in). The inside is unfinished so I can see the rough opening of the skylight and the nails securing the skylight. There are only a few holding the thing down. Some nails are not secured to anything. It has been a nightmare for us. Our previous 15 were 33 years old and only 2 started to leak within the past year. Should have found a skylight specialty company to just replace the 2....
Word of caution having just installed 3 deck mounted C06 units . . . in this video at timepoint 12:30 they say/show "securing skylight in place w/ the nails provided." Thing is, in the vid he's like tap tap tap and each nail is set. But, if you're decking is .5- 7/8 inch plywood (not balsa as that deck must be!) the nails are *exceedingly* difficult to hammer into the deck, and you must _also_ hammer them at an angle (yet get them in straight!!) as there is effectively zilch 'clearance' from the skylight frame to the 'nail holes' meaning that if you are not an ace hammerer (I mean _ace_ hammerer!) you WILL whack the frame and still not get the nails in properly. This is a design oversight - Velux clearly expects all installers to be career roofers who can hit nails perfectly, _at an angle_ and still get them to drive perpendicular to deck and into hard decking with a 'tap tap tap'. I'm good at placing nails/hammering, but this was a no go so I ended up getting & using some deck screws and using a driver to screw the skylights in place vs. having multiple multiple frame dsents/dings. Voided the warranty but we all know roofing material suppliers make their warranties all but impossible to claim anyway. All they needed to do was make the flange half an inch wider to make the holes accessible without angle hammering - even using deck screws/driver was tricky due to the angle and zero clearance from frame edge to nail hole. Trust me, there was no easy peasy 'tap tap' to get their nails into effectively recessed holes, thru .7 inch plywood deck. A 45 degree deck. Trust me, install one (or three!) velux skylights and youll know exactly what I mean. Unless youre a prof. roofer nailing into a balsa deck. Tap tap. *not*
I hit each nail square on the head without ever missing, and the nail travels fully into the wood in one fell swing. I feel pity for men who can't bang in a nail. It's a shame! I installed one of these skylights in 5 minutes and been installed without leaks in my mansion guesthouse for the past 150 years. You guys really need to learn how to do things the right way.
You can use a punch on the nail after it's set so your hammer is never close to the skylight , or put a wood shim between your hammer and skylight as a guard. Or pre-drill your holes straight with a long drill bit if setting them is such a pain. Or just be good at hammering as you say. If you're going to resort to screws at least use a pan headed screw like a GRK cabinet screw instead of some deck screws, with a long extension to get over that clearance problem.
This is a good video but I actually found the instructions that came with the skylight to be really good as well. For certain things those instructions are even more detailed.

~AS FAR AS THE AIR VENTING MODELS GO...i AGREE with Pravina sings....Without some kind of screens,, it would literally be a PARADE of bees,,mosquitoes,,spiders..etc..coming in the whole time it is open.. there is NO WAY i would leave it open (even an hour} like that where i live..there must be a solution to this problem {or some kind of after market screening product that would work....
My roof installers did not do anything to the skylights on the inside. Shouldn’t this be part of the installations? They replaced three old Vellux skylights. They wanted $1150.00 over the cost of the roof to work on the inside.

My 3 fixed skylights were also installed unfinished on the interior. I was told to caulk and foam the raw edge and contact a carpenter to finish the work. It looks awful and there is black underlayment with shingles cut unevenly showing against the interior skylight frame. The video does not discuss caulk or foam and does not appear to mount the skylight on top of shingles! Now, I have to figure out a solution.
They are simple . But I’ve been roofing and installing velux skylights for 20 years . Velux make everything easy and bulletproof from the weather . No other skylight company compares to velux to be honest . Just installed a 2 by 4 horizontal curb mount yesterday

Until these have a screen, I would never have these open!!! We have mosquitoes, ticks, wasps, bees, and things that crawl on the roof, like squirrels, raccoon, etc. What were they thinking!!!
Terrible instructional video. Hearing what to do without seeing what to do on an instructional video makes it pretty much worthless. You're describing what we need to do while the camera is 20 ft away from the guy installing it. If that's the case, why even bother having a guy installing it? I could've seen the same thing watch a roofer install one from the ground.
I disagree. I was able to do all that was needed,. Correctly! This is a re-install for me as I originally installed it nearly 30 years ago...before internet videos. While the window has NEVER leaked my flashing (done incorrectly) did. This window is opened and closed at least 3 times a week...for 30 years and still operates fine. Do the math! Any additions will be Velux.
I agree. It's difficult to tell exactly what spacing the step flashing is being installed at, and how the cladding and top piece of flashing are attached. Also, if you're installing the skylight into an existing roof, prying up the old shingles to interweave the new ones is far more difficult than shown in the video. Getting a good pair of snips to cut shingles is highly recommended.
Mine is leaking because the cladding doesn’t seal and the snow melt is backing up inside cladding and leaking down what a poor design on top of it you guys want to charge me $150 to come out and look at your failed design

There’s a tool for doing this, it’s called a “Roof Snake.”

My Velux skylight was installed last August and the “trim” just came off on the side and the bottom.

Nothing was done on the inside and the outside of the skylight the trim around the bottom and side just fell off.
