- GOOD DAY, traveler! For about 6 months now, I've had this dress stuck in my head and it's had an absolute chokehold on me. It's from the game "Plague Tale: Requiem", and aside from glorious ratnadoes, it also boasts some seriously whimsical NPC's. This lady in particular is a florist? I think? ANYWHO, since I was craving some sewing (weird I know), I figured this would be the perfect dress to spend a couple days making! Or at least... it started out as a dress, hehe.
I frankenstein'd some patterns together, assumed my floor troll position, got drooled on by my cat, chatted about landscaping and the Sims for way too long, and generally had a grand ol' time.

I couldn't relate more, "the truly exciting thing about sewing is that no matter how many times you've done something, there's always a chance that you've completely f*cked it," I cried
I started sewing a few years ago and I was always so disheartened when I’d cut 2 of the same side instead of a right and a left, or I’d sew something and spot a mistake. I actually stopped sewing for a very long time. This reinforces what I tried to tell myself, that those mistakes are absolutely normal and to give it another go. 😊

As a sewing professional the thing I want you to know is that I'm so heckin proud of you! Are you doing things the way I do things? Nope, and that's ok. Are you doing things the most efficient way? Not always, and that's also ok. You're making things! You're making wonderful, joyful things that are adorable and wearable and (i hope) you enjoy. There's never just one way to do a thing.

As a professional seamstress of 10+ years, I will admit, there are a lot of times I yell at the screen "Rachel, what are you doing?!" But it's fascinating to see the solutions a complete outsider comes up with and you'd never know given the great end results.

@@lucygresham3012 if you mean threading it, most have pictures you can follow. And most machines are pretty similar, too. You'd be surprised how much you can find on UA-cam. You can probably find even more on Google, but you might have to do some reading, it you go that route 😅.

Plant tips for those in need!
-Cutting off dead, brown leaves helps your plant thrive so don’t be afraid to do it
-Spritzing leaves can sometimes cause mold so water the soil
-Check specific plant instructions but most like to be watered a lot at once then dry out
-Rotate succulents so they don’t get “leggy”
also when planting outside, water in the early morning or after sundown because watering mid-day causes the plants to boil alive in the sun!!

True you only sprits the leaves occasionally and for 2 main reasons, you should do it at night to keep the plant from getting sun burn. 1) to clean the leaves where you are wiping them down removing the moisture. 2) Foliar feeding, feeding liquid fertilizer directly though the leaves this can help maintain a soil balance for nutrients that may not balance well with other types of nutrients or to prevent excess amounts of that nutrient in the soil. Foliar feeding does not replace having good soil and fertilizing of the soil it is merely a supplement you do a few times a year to promote leaf growth.
In dark corners and for specific tropical plants, grow lights are your best friend! They'll make your plants perk up in a half hour or less

Honestly, I'm jealous of your ability to kinda just wing it with sewing and your stuff looks amazing. I am a perfectionist about it too the point of not seeing at all cause of the stress, and fit is still a mystery to me.

Those are small drop spindles. If you ever want to try them out for actual spinning you can make ones that look almost exactly like the ones from the character with doweling and those little wood donut discs from the craft store. They're super cheap too and spinning is a lot of fun.
Also love that the character featured spiral lacing. Made me so happy.

Rachel, the fact that you're not sewing like a "professional" is frankly the reason you're my absolute favorite sewing UA-camr! Most other people who do this are intimidating and present themselves as if they know exactly what they're doing all the time, and as someone who is literally Frankensteining her own pattern as we speak because I don't have access to a printer to print out a pattern, having someone on the Internet like you is incredibly comforting. Instead of a teacher, you feel more like the awesome next door neighbor who I would go and sew with and we'd make awesome cosplays but also make a whole lot of mistakes along the way and laugh at ourselves and learn together.

Just want to let you know that professionals ALSO cobble together patterns-take the sleeves from that one, the collar from that one, the skirt from that one, the bodice from that one….if they don’t drape or draft their own patterns, they ARE cobbling patterns to get the look they want. And all sorts of professional clothing makers I have seen have a kind of chaos. But of course there are also those that are more organized/put together/lawful/etc….
I totally think you should add the leaf to an apron-like the one you made here! and it could be a giant pocket, or sew lines on it to create smaller pockets! It would be soo cute! like a little woodland creature's apron! Loved the video Rachel!!

I think always making extravagant items for videos is fine in moderation. Most of us, I think anyways, love your channel because of the compassionate human you are. Instead of using a leather punch, you should switch to an awl! It’s easier to use and it makes for stronger grommets since the awl just pokes through the weave instead of cutting it. ALSO I think those doodads are drop spindles ❤

Confirm drop spindles. Dating them based upon the base and top hook would be funny. Anyone here watch enough Time Team to give a rough date on those drop spindles?
@@annekec4666 I studied archaeology at university (have a BA in Archaeological Practice) but it didn't cover spindles other than in passing. You'd need more than just Time Team to accurately date them lol. Especially given that certain styles of tools changed very little over the course of many hundreds or even thousands of years (depending on the tool). When something was found to work very well we tended to just keep using it (planned obsolescence is a relatively new thing). Though we do know that the game series is set "in 14th century Aquitaine, France during the Hundred Years' War" which lasted from 1337 to 1453. For it to be the 14th century part that means any time 1337 to 1399. Its therefore supposed to be a European style which rules out it being a drop spindle (that's a much later American style based on Andean weaving techniques, not on European ones) and the shape does suggest this. Its got a conical long bit and it creates a sort of () shape on the spindle (drop spindles create a stronger cone shape against a flat disc). But other than that? Stylistically how they looked is more to do with what fibre you were spinning with them as the shape affects spin speed (amongst other things). The styles themselves seem to have changed very little over the years. A quick google shows you can buy some now which look the same, and there are way older examples than mid 1300s which look almost the same too.
Love seeing these where you make clothes you’d actually wear, gives me hope to be able to do that for myself one day

Making them separates is actually way more historically accurate as well! Post medieval times it was actually quite rare of every day clothes to be one piece dresses as it was impractical for working women to put them on by themselves. I think that top was too cute by itself to get rid of that peplum!

I believe the small trinkets around the NPC's waist are drop spindles! They are used to create thread. She probably carries them with her so she can spin in between customers. Lovely dress! I too want a very full skirted lace up dress...I've made one before but it's got a lot of boning and doesn't fit quite right. I just might try my hand at a dress like this one!
I'm jealous of the way Rachel gesticulates & moves with her skirts. the very natural skirt gab before she plants her fist on her hip to pose while she speaks at 25:43 is very artistic. she also generally works for the camera to make the fabric tangible in the way it swings and wrinkles. i wish i had a skirt like this to spin in.

There's nothing wrong with re-using the same patterns! If they work for you, that's awesome! And it's more sustainable to use patterns that you know fit you well, rather than buying new ones for every project. Plus, maybe you'll have an easier time sewing?? (I'm only up to the pattern part of the video so I have no idea how this turns out XD)

That looks like a game I would play... but I haven't. After all the years I have watched you... you ooze clever, artistic, and extravagance. The three things hanging from her dress are spinning whorls. If I were a serf in the supposed time period I would defiantly dress like her and be spinning, knitting, and embroidering to my heart's content. (They didn't have crochet back then at least the patterns weren't known until the 1820s). If I haven't said so before I really enjoy watching your videos. Sometimes I watch them a couple of times.

I actually really like it when you make something you will actually wear a lot. While cosplay stuff can be cool, I love being practical so I always find enjoyment seeing something being used more than a few times. Also, your dresses aren't boring, ever. And it's fun to follow your journey through making them, so dont ya worry and just make as many practical "boring" clothes ya want!

I like that you keep coming back to your favorite patterns - for one, the clothes never come out the same because your inspiration is always wildly different and wonderful. for two, it's encouraging that you know which patterns suit your body so well - maybe someday I'll get there too!

Hey, Rachel, I love watching you create anything! Don't sell yourself short, dear girl. That dress which had bewitched you looked quite wonderful. I love medieval garb, and used to wear it on occasion, when I was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA), which was a sort of Medieval club. I still have some of the dresses and cloaks that I made, and even though I'm too big for them, I keep them, just in case. Watching you valiantly sewing up such a period costume is fun! As much as I love all your content - and I do mean all of it - I think videos like this where you make something just because you want to and you’re going to wear it multiple times are my favorite. The vibe is just a lot more chill and you seem a lot less stressed during the process.

I just discovered your videos, THEY ARE AMAZING! ❤For your plants, if you leave them in the pots, you can move them around until you find a spot in your yard where they are happy and then plant them. (I moved to a new apartment and am still moving around my potted plants to see where they are happy on the porch, the first summer at the new place came and I was able to see where the sun was on the porch. I checked on them every 3-5 days for about three weeks and think I might have found a spot where everyone is happy!)
I know others have already said it, but I think it needs to be said all the time. Not all videos have to be complicated grandiose projects! Honestly I love the more "everyday" style videos, as they are something that make me want to grab some fabric and make something myself. They are comfortable to watch, and equally entertaining as the bigger projects!
