    This is a good tutorial but you shouldn't really use a trapezoid for the pelvis even for heavy bottom characters - just use a wider cuboid. The problem is you are putting a hip just under the illiac spine which is totally anatomically incorrect - hip is way into the back. That's why your hips look so thin in the drawing you did around 17 minute. Box method is great but take a better look how the box is describing the pelvis anatomically. Cheers!

    • @qtpatrol
      @qtpatrol  Рік тому +224

      OHHH OKAYYY, I see what you mean. Another good way of putting it would be pushing the hip upwards more (if you're looking at it from a frontal view). This isn't something id considered till now haha, the main idea of using the trapezoid was to get a good silhouette of the hips without losing the stomach line. For either method Ig its just a matter of remembering how and where to adjust your placements when drawing. But thanks for the feedback, Ill continue to learn myself ;)!

    • @pitrek121g
      @pitrek121g Рік тому +74

      @@qtpatrol sure - you can adjust to any shape :D I like rectangle more because quad muscle attach to the pelvis in the straight down from illiac spine so having the line down you now exactly where top of the leg joins. But you can just draw straight vertical lines from top corners - these are very useful. Keep up the good work!

    • @pitrek121g
      @pitrek121g Рік тому +9

      @@achievementart yes, a pelvis is the widest at the height of greater trochanters when standing (I am talking about the pelvis area of the human being not the bone itself 😅) and these are in around half of the box while looking at the side of the body. In the video it was like these are at the front of the pelvis

    THIS is good. As someone who has struggled a lot with intuitively grasping construction and translating it into a finished figure, your tutorials are VERY much needed and appreciated.
    Many artists don't realize how quickly these basic ideas just click for them, so your effort to break it down, and dig deeper is a big deal. Looking forward to even more!

    I've gradually taken the approach of construction being a thing derived automatically from contour and cross-contour studies, rather than a defined "method". It's true that having the planes of the box is helpful as a way to make the form crisp and spot some errors, but the more often you follow the contour, the more you automatically spot the landmarks on each part of the contour, so as long as you're observing a lot of real stuff and studying it from many angles and applying cross-sections, you always end up having the planes and relationships in your head. And then construction is just a matter of whether you want to let the contours drift into impressionism or if you want them tightened up to present depth of perspective and photoreal proportions.
    I'm following along little with these boxes, though, and it's odd how much I can feel the muscle memory of my study approach kicking in as soon as I start following the contour of the box and saying "oh, it's this configuration, so then make this kind of motion and that's about what the pelvis will look like in that angle." It's like looking at an apple and immediately writing "apple".

    • @qtpatrol
      @qtpatrol  Рік тому +6

      Exactly, good point twhich you made that I forgot to add in about contours. Its important to remember that the body has tons of them and very little flat areas, esp in the front of the torso. There are some areas which are tempting to draw flat with the planes like the collarbones when in actuality, it depends on the style and or realism. I use cross contour every so often, but normally for the limbs OR if my torsu structure feels off (like muscle, breasts, etc). Might be a good thing to make notes on in the future ╥﹏╥. Noice catch :3!

    This method works great, but what Ive learned from my experiences in art college is a method I prefer!
    Basically you make a simple boxy shape of the overall pose, then add an oval for the ribcage, a triangle up to the neck, and then lil triange undies. From there you can add the butt right underneath those undies (since it hangs lower than the front) and easily finish the pose. Doing this has made my gesture work insanely fast, and I was able to complete 100 gestures in a single day because of it, with 45 sec-1min for each (which definately was not needed due to procrastination :D)

    Just to have a Better Understanding of Things... of course they are just Simply Posing a Default Pose... but its Good to see that it can Scale if Done Propertly...
    i did Learn a Lot - i learn Where the Shoulder Goes on - how Should i think about the Skin - Think about Push and Pull (if its Pulling it Should Show Bone - otherWise Show Fat/Skin... But Respect the Bone Cause that is the Reason its Pushing Forward in the First-place).... Hmmm
    and Also Understanding More Complex Posing - What Happens When it Hides from you... Try to "Aproximate" as Best you can.... Since Experience Comes in Handy... but Relying on the Basic Shapes Helps A Lot since you are Shooting Blind all the Time, and Brings in Muscle memory into Account (Since you are Seeing the Same Pose Over Over Over again you can Re-use Poses...

    If you want a accurate representation put the rib cage and pelvis into the boxes it helps when visualize the figure in the boxes. So when practicing drawing boxes try using a different color pencil to line out the rib cage and pelvis. The pelvis is have a shorter box vs the ribcage one you are done practicing that for a few days then box out your favorite character poses then you can start to see it come together just by using boxes because you already have visual knowledge of drawing the ribcage and pelvis. Hope this help those inspiring artists

  • @jestademon3524
    @jestademon3524 Рік тому +1

    The way you place your pelvis box is a bit off.
    Since the pelvis tilts forward in space, the tips of the bone would be slightly below the belly button line. The bumps that protrude on the belly button line is actually the flank portion of the oblique, and the reason why it looks like it's a part of the pelvis is because on some people (mainly female bodies, sometimes male) the flank portion of the oblique melds into the pelvis, creating the smooth bump.
    Hope this helps a bit.

    • @qtpatrol
      @qtpatrol  Рік тому

      Yeah that's a good thing to note! I did adjust the pelvis a bit later during the demonstration but I did not make considerations for tilt or anything of that matter, nor how fat and muscle make you lose sight of the pelvis's functionality. I don't believe box itself is entirely wrong but specifying the landmarks properly would be a good consideration to make to clean up any weird areas. Ill be sure to clear that up in the future for sure, thanks for the feedback!!!
