However, the feeling of Procreate Dreams does feel very organic and smooth, like animating on paper. Could take some time, but I'm looking forward to it!
I've used Animate, Krita, TVPaint, Maya, Blender and Spine and have dabbled in Harmony, but I just couldn't get myself over the initial hurdle of learning how to used Procreate Dreams. This may be because I don't have as much time to animate now that I'm no longer a student, but I just found that getting started with this app can be very frustrating. This frustration shows in your video, but as expected from a Jazza video - you pull through. Great video overall. This is an instant Jazza classic.
@@gottafindacoolname There are countless animation apps out there. Have you heard of Synfig Studio? How about OpenToons? Have you ever tried Looom? I also didn't mention I've used Callipeg here and there. ToonSquid's UI reminds me of Callipeg quite a bit.
The interface frustrates me enough that I dont want to use it at all. Too many things are hidden that should be front and center. Its a shame, because it the performance feature is nice. But the design choices, unfortunately, make this unusable for me.
That's just how Apple does things, and since they're stuck on an Apple platform, Procreate is just following the framework they're given. All of Mac OS X and iOS is confusing and hidden in hundreds of menus. They put all their time into making a pretty UI they forget to make a practical UX. The window management on Mac is probably the worst part. Procreate is dropping the ball just like Apple and most Mac/iOS software does.
OMG Jazza hasn’t popped up on my feed in months. Last time he was burned out. So it’s really good to see him again and making some classic content!! Happy to see he is still on the platform
Thanks for finally trying this Jazza! I had the exact same feeling in my process of using Dreams, would love to potentially see more animation challenges on the channel in the future!
Wow I remember watching Jazza for my first animated cc tutorials, and now another new program has been released we’re back! Love how it’s always his first time and he displays excitement, confusion and ultimately able to figure it out at the end. It’s really great!
Agreed, I hated doing animation before, so tedious. However with Dreams it is more like animating from an artists POV rather than an animator's or editor's POV and there are some additional editing tools if you need them. It still has a long way to go but so far so good.
Oh, my goodness. You made me laugh so much. Keep these videos coming. I just discovered you because my 9-year-old grandson wants to get into digital art, animation, etc. I'm an artist, so I am making it a point to ensure his success and do whatever I can to fuel his interest and creative juices. My dad was an artist who loved it and could make a good living at it after having three kids. I'm exploring another medium for my art and subject matter, but.. hmmm, my brain is spinning with ideas on how to utilize this for myself. The 9-year-old is my main focus, and your personality, talent, humor, and being genuine will be good for him.
I'm not sure if someone's already mentioned this but for 16:01 you can group a selection of frames and make the entire group a clipping mask layer. Also you can set the group to have a blending mode.

Really glad to see Jazza try out Dreams! Well put about the bell curve at the end… it takes a bit to learn, but once you get used to it it’s pretty cool! But that’s also when some of the issues become more evident. I’m glad he liked it overall. I personally think the video editing aspect is what excited me about it
Aaron Blaise and Michael Relth’s animations didn’t look so small scale me. Their films seemed pretty high-end and professional as far as I can tell. I can’t see how they could be any better. 🤷🏾
@@Tonabillity Well they’re very short lol and I don’t think any animator wants to use procreate dreams for longer animations. Also while those animations are great they’re not highly detailed compared to professional animation projects.
@@bakad5458 They’re made by SEASONED professionals who get do ANYTHING that they wish, and their work looks pretty darn professional to me ❤️🔥 I don’t see anything missing with ANY of it. Just because animators create short films, doesn’t mean that they’re not highly professional 🤷🏾 I’ve seen much worse, created with “so-called” better applications 🧐
@@bakad5458 Perhaps you can do MUCH better, but their work has MORE than enough detail for my taste! I’ve seen much worse created with “supposedly” better applications. In fact, I also have Toon Boom, which feels like tedious, hard labor by comparison. As an award-winning animator myself, I’m having a BALL creating a music video with PD! Even though it’s still in beta, I’d much rather work with Procreate Dreams ANY day!❤️🔥 But that’s just me User results may vary 🤷🏾
I think this is a pretty fair assessment. I love Procreate to draw, and was initially a bit disappointed with Dreams despite having looked forward to it for months - however, after a lot of trial and error (and even more researching as you did), I can see how it has the potential to simplify a lot of the complex ideas that can arise during animation. It isn't perfect and has glaring gaps, but I'm hoping those with improve over time with updates.
Ive had procreate dreams ever since it came out and its so nice oml- Also Jazza if your reading this and wanted a faster way of importing brushes in the future, you can drag the entire folder and after a bit all of the brushes in that group will be there :D Love watching your animation process! Makes me wanna get on dreams myself but i cant atm as im in Dublin ireland for my graduation trip and will stay in ireland for 2 weeks and i left my ipad at home (mostly due to bluetooth on the plane as the pencil is bluetooth) Anyways cant wait for more videos like this if you decide to make more in the future! Not sure if you know this but you can animate in procreate as well but its nowhere near this since you cant add sound which sucks, but we have dreams now and its probably one of my favorite animation apps to use after flipa-clip
There are for sure better ways to get around some of the issues you were having. Like, I'm sure you could've done a split screen with the files app so that you could listen to your audio files and then drag and drop the ones you wanted.
The animation was very nice especially how organic the stick figure was being flung around by the ball the cartoon physics was immaculate Try blender next
I was seriously looking forward to Jazza to make this video as I am almost 4 or 5 year old subscriber who watches all his videos and I once started using Adobe Flash by being inspired by Jazza’s feature film. But then i had to give up on adobe since it was not portable on my ipad. Ever since i have started using Procreate dreams i find following things as a charm: 1. Audio sync 2. Grouping made easy compared to animation feature in Procreate 3. Auto tweening without loosing pixels in my art I really really want Procreate dreams to include lasso and select tool. Yes i have requested this on their website chat thread. 😊
I agree with your assessment that at first it is rather confusing, after that really nice and smooth. However, for the more repetitive tasks in animation like coloring and cleanup, it is not very efficient. For short burst of animation or pieces of a larger one I can see this shine, but for longer stuff the limitations of the app and the platform (no collaboration) get in the way. Now if they would release a desktop app that could assist in the more hardcore stuff, this could be gold.
It would be nice to see a mini series of you learning procreate and creating more refined pieces like . 1 day with procreate , 1 week , 1 month and so on or different level difficulties of animation using pro create
Thank you, i really found this video helpful and has massively inspired me with my art journey! I have only done one animation project and that was on procreate so I have been really curious about this. I'm hoping that as a beginner I won't necessarily know whats missing or not intuitive for animation software. Thank you again i cannot overstate how brilliant i found your animations and im soooo inspired to keep going! 💖
@@nikkim7038 when you take out the greed of wallstreet execs, and put it in the hands of your passionate creator, you get toonsquid like apps. that's the future of business, genuineness over bottome line profits, but the irony is such apps will generate more revenue than ever, because it was genuinely created by a passionate creative individual or team of individuals in it for the outcome, not the money upfront necessarily :D
@@nikkim7038there’s nothing special about it being made by one person. The developers from PC Dreams could do the same thing easily. But what they are trying to do is use very little to no RAM to run the software. Toonsquid is limited to the RAM for the amount of layers you can use or size of the canvas. That’s the challenge the developers are facing, so you can have almost infinite layers and 1mil by 1mil pixels
Ball, stick-man and blood are the perfect combo for introductory animating. In fact, even when kids learn to draw, they often begin with those three. Heck, even cavemen pretty much started with those as well (emphasis on pretty much). Truely the origin of human creativity.
Yes* seems to be the verdict for almost every animator who reviews it. I've done several longer projects in it now, and I find that it's usually better to do the actual drawing in Procreate and import the layers to Dreams (which you can do with drag and drop). Once they add a lasso tool to Dreams, that might change!
in my short time using dreams, i have learnt that janky techniques are the main way to edit large sections of the timeline (which is my main issue with the app), like to make the clipping layer, id make one frame, drag it out, and cut it, all before putting the actual drawing on, and then copy and paste for repetitive parts, then tweak where necessary. i believe everyone knows that this app can be one of the best going, if it just had a few things added to it, which many people have already spoken about
I recently just finished an interactive animation course for my college and in we used Adobe Animate. I had experience with Adobe Flash before it was rebranded into Adobe Animate so I thought this would be a great chance to relearn the program and see what new features there were so after spending 8 weeks using the program I can safely say I am NEVER using Adobe Animate ever again🤬😡. I ran into so many issues/bugs I basically had to turn in an incomplete final project because of all of the problems I was having. Luckily I wasn’t the only one and the professor gave us all some lean way on our projects but it just showed me how far Adobe has failed to keep Adobe Animate relevant. It also shows that they are more interested in keeping their graphic programs like Photoshop and Illustrator more supported as those are their most popular programs. I won’t be surprised if later on we see them stop supporting Adobe Animate because with companies like Procreate creating better art programs than them they would rather just put more effort into supporting Photoshop and Illustrator.
procreate it's not better than animate, if anything i would say toonsquid is closer but not yet, but the crashes are true, i ended up cracking an older version to be able to work on it
I wish we had something like flip note studio again where all the simplicity and limitation drives creativity. And the simplicity makes it more accessible to learn
I think for the sound effects specifically, since you can open the files app as a floating app and play the sound effects there, it’s a pretty good work around for that until they implement a preview feature. Though, perhaps they didn’t because you can already do that
I love this video so much! I have always very much valued your input on artists tools - my first (and only) tablet was the Huion 950P which you reviewed positively back in the day. I'm not a professional artist by any means, but I started drawing on my iPad using Procreate. I definitely agree that Procreate has a very difficult upfront learning curve, nothing is explained, everything is in swipe features or buried in a menu, but once you get used to it, it really is such a powerful tool. After watching this video, I will consider Dreams if I ever get into animation. I can tell exactly what the pros and cons of the the application are, and I can see how - even as a hobby artist - I could use it for my own projects. I think what I love even more about this video is how much I can enjoy your content again. I can see and feel your workflow, your thought process of going from "Let's start simple with a bouncing ball", to doing research to learn more about the program, then finally how you were able to build into the final project, that's something I can learn from and put towards my own creative process - with your humourous personality to spice up the video. Thank you Jazza.
I've been a fan of your videos for years now, and back in 2018 I bought a Huion because of your work and the way you sold it. Am I gonna be buying this eventually because of your too? Well...yes!
Loved this video! The stick figure animation made me feel in my teens again xD the early days of UA-cam. And I'm so happy you're getting back into your groove and having some cheeky fun in your videos
Procreate Dreams is like an abusive relationship: I'm so in love with the OG Procreate drawing experience that Dreams seems like a no brainer for me, but it lacks so many basic features you'd expect from other programs. I've done my complaining on their forums enough already, but it's a really conflicting feeling: I'm very particular about my brushes/pressure curves so working in Dreams keeps me from wasting time making things look nice and instead keeps me animating. But so many functions are missing, like looping groups, a more adjustable timeline that doesn't force me into flipbook mode, or adjustable tween curves... I'll proudly still use it, but I often won't recommend others to use it if they aren't as beholden to their brush engines like I am.
It's got a very different interface, and so it really surprises me that they don't offer much in the way of quickly accessible tutorials. That said, I can see this program being a very enjoyable program to use once you get used to its unique workflow.
Hope this will get more views, because it was so much fun! I fear the thumbnail makes this video look like an ad, and that perhaps made people not want to click...?

I've used Animate, Krita, TVPaint, Maya, Blender and Spine and have dabbled in Harmony, but I just couldn't get myself over the initial hurdle of learning how to used Procreate Dreams. This may be because I don't have as much time to animate now that I'm no longer a student, but I just found that getting started with this app can be very frustrating. This frustration shows in your video, but as expected from a Jazza video - you pull through.
Great video overall. This is an instant Jazza classic.
Why does no one know about toonsquid?
@@gottafindacoolname There are countless animation apps out there. Have you heard of Synfig Studio? How about OpenToons? Have you ever tried Looom?
I also didn't mention I've used Callipeg here and there. ToonSquid's UI reminds me of Callipeg quite a bit.
@@gottafindacoolname i was looking for a toonsquid comment too, lol
@@gottafindacoolname bc its not as popular, keep telling people about it though !! i've been scrolling looking for a toonsquid comment too 😭😭😭😭
The interface frustrates me enough that I dont want to use it at all. Too many things are hidden that should be front and center. Its a shame, because it the performance feature is nice. But the design choices, unfortunately, make this unusable for me.
To be fair its an ipad. You have to do some things different... that being said they could just have different workspaces and customisable ones -.-
@@ShockingPikachu The "its an ipad app" doesn't really hold water when apps like toonsquid exist and do a much better job with their interfaces.
@@gmcubed good to see you just completely disregarded the other half of my comment.
@@ShockingPikachu ? I disregarded nothing, I don't disagree, I just had nothing to add to that.
I love it when Jazza does animation and kind of showing how he does everything ❤
Ahh, the "Tale Teller"- Oh how I cried. Thank you for a great video - once again you inspire us to create=3
Wow I remember watching Jazza for my first animated cc tutorials, and now another new program has been released we’re back! Love how it’s always his first time and he displays excitement, confusion and ultimately able to figure it out at the end. It’s really great!
Animation is so tiring but so rewarding🙌🏼
Agreed, I hated doing animation before, so tedious. However with Dreams it is more like animating from an artists POV rather than an animator's or editor's POV and there are some additional editing tools if you need them. It still has a long way to go but so far so good.
Takes me back to the og jazza videos. Such a throwback 😊
Thank you, Jazza! I really wanted to see how this program worked before downloading! 😊
That initial frustration of relying on our intuition to explore the app without reading up is so relatable. Thanks for doing this!
This was so great!! I tried procreate dreams and gave up because it was frustrating. Thanks for the inspiration
i refunded it and got toonsquid instead i am trying to work with the program, not against it 😭 it's a shame bc i love procreate
PERFORMANCE MODE IS INGENIOUS IVE ALWAYS WANTED A DIGITAL ANIMATION SOFTWARE WITH A FEATURE LIKE THAT
vids like this help motivate me to try and get back into art and more creative projects
It’s so amazing to see you come back to animation, Jazza!
best and most useful review I've seen of this program. Thanks!
I'm not sure if someone's already mentioned this but for 16:01 you can group a selection of frames and make the entire group a clipping mask layer. Also you can set the group to have a blending mode.
Enfin!!! ça fait 1 an que je cherche des cours d'animations mais avec un prix pas trop élevé!!!
Merci beaucoup! je vais aller voir votre cour, vous pouvez être certain!
I was like... "yeah, let's watch old comidiant cartoonist, how he struggle with an app'... Now I totally take it back as I leaned so much usefull things for using procreate dreams. Thank you, and sorry for calling you old man, but I kinda grow up with your videos, so... please take it as a complement for being a good fun techer. With all respect thanks for not stopping sharing your expirience as an artist.
brings me back to when I really started to first get into drawing I remember watching Jazza's Animation videos constantly for some short so cool to see him animate again and reference a Teller's Tale
The editing goes gard
Once again seeing Jazza animate and wanting to get into animation myself😢
The impacts and the motion are just *cheff kiss*
ANIMATIONS ARE BACK BABY!!!
love a good none biased review just the raw opinion of someone is always great to hear even if it could be wrong or right
Gonna watch this when I come home but how fitting it was thst this video came now. Just the other day I was asking around on Threads if Procreate really is worth it...and yesh seems like it, now interesting to see what Dreams will be like.
I miss this so much. I've not been on this channel for years but I used to watch you all the time, and then I just stopped for some reason. the intro is so nostalgic it made my heart hurt. I'm glad I clicked on this video! I'm back :)
My favorite jazza videos have always been his animation ones
Really glad to see Jazza try out Dreams! Well put about the bell curve at the end… it takes a bit to learn, but once you get used to it it’s pretty cool! But that’s also when some of the issues become more evident. I’m glad he liked it overall. I personally think the video editing aspect is what excited me about it
We wanna see hil try toonsquid tho. The best animation app out there
Probably a good thing for starting out and doing small scale things as a proof of concept to show studios etc.
@@bakad5458 They’re made by SEASONED professionals who get do ANYTHING that they wish, and their work looks pretty darn professional to me ❤️🔥
I don’t see anything missing with ANY of it.
Just because animators create short films, doesn’t mean that they’re not highly professional 🤷🏾
I’ve seen much worse, created with “so-called” better applications 🧐
@@bakad5458 Perhaps you can do MUCH better, but their work has MORE than enough detail for my taste!
I’ve seen much worse created with “supposedly” better applications.
In fact, I also have Toon Boom, which feels like tedious, hard labor by comparison.
As an award-winning animator myself, I’m having a BALL creating a music video with PD!
Even though it’s still in beta, I’d much rather work with Procreate Dreams ANY day!❤️🔥
But that’s just me
User results may vary 🤷🏾
always a good day when jazza posts
Really has a nostalgic feeling this video, but still super fresh and entertaining!
Hope to see more of these sorts of videos again 🎉
I think this is a pretty fair assessment. I love Procreate to draw, and was initially a bit disappointed with Dreams despite having looked forward to it for months - however, after a lot of trial and error (and even more researching as you did), I can see how it has the potential to simplify a lot of the complex ideas that can arise during animation. It isn't perfect and has glaring gaps, but I'm hoping those with improve over time with updates.
Ive had procreate dreams ever since it came out and its so nice oml-
Also Jazza if your reading this and wanted a faster way of importing brushes in the future, you can drag the entire folder and after a bit all of the brushes in that group will be there :D
Love watching your animation process! Makes me wanna get on dreams myself but i cant atm as im in Dublin ireland for my graduation trip and will stay in ireland for 2 weeks and i left my ipad at home (mostly due to bluetooth on the plane as the pencil is bluetooth)
Anyways cant wait for more videos like this if you decide to make more in the future!
Not sure if you know this but you can animate in procreate as well but its nowhere near this since you cant add sound which sucks, but we have dreams now and its probably one of my favorite animation apps to use after flipa-clip
There are for sure better ways to get around some of the issues you were having. Like, I'm sure you could've done a split screen with the files app so that you could listen to your audio files and then drag and drop the ones you wanted.
yeah basic OS things. Can even just hold down on the file and get the option to play it.
The animation was very nice especially how organic the stick figure was being flung around by the ball the cartoon physics was immaculate
Try blender next
I was seriously looking forward to Jazza to make this video as I am almost 4 or 5 year old subscriber who watches all his videos and I once started using Adobe Flash by being inspired by Jazza’s feature film. But then i had to give up on adobe since it was not portable on my ipad. Ever since i have started using Procreate dreams i find following things as a charm:
1. Audio sync
2. Grouping made easy compared to animation feature in Procreate
3. Auto tweening without loosing pixels in my art
I really really want Procreate dreams to include lasso and select tool.
I hope you bring out another animated film similar to the "Take Teller". It was so well done, and left me wanting more.
toonsquid just knocked it off the block
fr toonsquid it's so good, the fact it was made by just one dude it's insane
Toonsquid is amazing
Why did I not think about this 😭😭😭 18:07 they’re the same colors
Yes* seems to be the verdict for almost every animator who reviews it. I've done several longer projects in it now, and I find that it's usually better to do the actual drawing in Procreate and import the layers to Dreams (which you can do with drag and drop). Once they add a lasso tool to Dreams, that might change!
This looks really good I want to get better at animating because it looks so fun to see your stuff come to life
One of my absolute favorite video’s you’ve ever made!!! Amazing ! Would love to see more procreate dreams videos! Keep it up Jazza !
in my short time using dreams, i have learnt that janky techniques are the main way to edit large sections of the timeline (which is my main issue with the app), like to make the clipping layer, id make one frame, drag it out, and cut it, all before putting the actual drawing on, and then copy and paste for repetitive parts, then tweak where necessary.
i believe everyone knows that this app can be one of the best going, if it just had a few things added to it, which many people have already spoken about
I love watching Jazza learn. He's so real. Great video!
What a great video! This is my first encounter with the very talented, Jazza. You are a gift!
7:28 did your team make this song? It is awfully specific to the content of the video😂 if so, nice!
I won’t be surprised if later on we see them stop supporting Adobe Animate because with companies like Procreate creating better art programs than them they would rather just put more effort into supporting Photoshop and Illustrator.
procreate it's not better than animate, if anything i would say toonsquid is closer but not yet, but the crashes are true, i ended up cracking an older version to be able to work on it
YEEEEEs Jazza is on the rigth track...YOU told how to animate Jazza thank you for bringing back animation into the channel
10:33 Animation Fondation misspelling, just FYI since its on a product page

I wish we had something like flip note studio again where all the simplicity and limitation drives creativity. And the simplicity makes it more accessible to learn
Ahh this brang me back to early 2000's uni and making fun flash doodle animations in class.
Well...yes!
Honestly I kinda like that everything’s hidden in procreate. It gives me a rush when I find something new that can be super useful
my toxic trait is thinking "yeah i could do that!" having never attempted animation before
Loved this video! The stick figure animation made me feel in my teens again xD the early days of UA-cam. And I'm so happy you're getting back into your groove and having some cheeky fun in your videos
I've seen that animation, and it was amazing. I could never. I was at a loss for words!! (:
I love these types of videos just Jazza vs new art program hope he does more videos like these in the future :)
make this a bigger series of animation trials. I'd watch. - long time viewer
This is really helpful! I was debating on whether or not to buy the program and this was a great review of it from an honest perspective
Oh ive been so excited for you to review this ever since it was first announced ❤
as someone who uses procreate dreams, i was very confused the first few days.
jazza: for context, i'm old
me: yeah man, me too
jazza: grow up
😂😂😂
It's got a very different interface, and so it really surprises me that they don't offer much in the way of quickly accessible tutorials. That said, I can see this program being a very enjoyable program to use once you get used to its unique workflow.
Hope this will get more views, because it was so much fun! I fear the thumbnail makes this video look like an ad, and that perhaps made people not want to click...?
man I can really see the stick figure flying across the screen doing a "tear" in the background that brings forth the animation-studios Logo ^^
I really love how your animations turned out 😅
Jazza thanks so much for giving procreate dreams a try. I have a iPad mini 6th edition tablet. I also have procreate dreams and procreate. So it was great to watch ya struggle first before I dived right into procreate atmosphere. This was great fun to watch thanks Jazza. :)
