I love this beast. You bought it about 5 miles from my house. It was in union Michigan. You passed my favorite bait shop (Hall's bait and tackle) and my local Greenmark John Deere dealer on U.S. 12. As a life long car guy and an RV builder, I think that it really is a piece of functional art. It's definitely one of a kind. Please take care of her and fix her up right.

No AC, but it has a furnace that just needs to be fixed. I would say its a Spring/Fall camper, really. Be a bit hot in the summer.
Hi Mav, didn’t realize you traveled in Japan in a rental van. A van camper Mariko who met you at a camp site showed a post card you gave her. Japan is a beautiful and special country with good food, people and interesting places. Sure you made new friends and enjoyed every minute of the journey. Hook up some USB desk fans for air circulation, it helps spread the heat more evenly and also helps with condensation on the inside. I use one in my ice house and it works great!

You know, certain older vehicles had a shut off valve under the hood, so coolant won’t go to the heater core in the summertime. Maybe check and see if that thing has one of those.

My old man was a station wagon guy. Mercury and Pontiacs, built camper for pick up truck built onto frame after removing box. Looked eerily similar but could probably survive a tornado and remain intact.

Never underestimate the power of a USB desk fan. I have a couple that clamp to anything. They run on very little power and can really move the air. Would be great to circulate the warm air from the Buddy heater.
Hope you get some good help getting your ride sorted. It's unique and attractive in its own way. Can't imagine a heater that would do it justice. Maybe you could add a barrier between the front and back.

I grew up in Des Moines Iowa, people don’t understand how cold it can get. I had a neighbor who had a camper built on an ElDorado, it wasn’t an airstream type but a regular flat side but I thought it was really cool. Great video as usual!
I remember when the Olds Toronado first came out. It was a monster with a 7L v8 in it was the first modern-era American car with front wheel drive. Also, it was almost 18 feet long. The fact that someone grafted on an Airstream trailer is amazing. This is truly a one-off marvel.
I have an Avion truck camper from 1966 and I get noticed everywhere I go.
GM Motorhomes from the 1970s were basically built on this same chassis/drivetrain. Not quite as interesting as this conversion, though!

My initial reaction here is... "man, I'm sorry Mav, you got a piece of shit with this purchase and I'm sorry you went all this way for something that you have to go through so much to even try to stay the night in."
My secondary reaction is... "I cannot wait for those videos of Mav & friends doing work on this thing!"
If it's anything I've learned from this dude is he can take some of the most unappealing things and make them great. I can't wait to see this thing once it becomes habitable and taken out on the road.
Also the jackery things are really nice. If anyone's wanting the opinion of a dude who doesn't go camping as often, these things are super nice to have if you just need some extra battery power during trips or out in the shed/garage working on projects.

agree -- there are a lot of fundamentals here that *if* you fix them correctly are going to result in an incredible camper. Mav's gonna want probably two of those DC heat pump systems he put into the HiLux. I would say toss the entire propane system entirely because propane is a massive PITA, but given the super cold conditions he hangs out in, idk for sure. you might be able to get away with resistive electric heat. fix the driveability stuff -- gas gauge, automotive HVAC, any other automotive issues, a freaking SHOULDER BELT. once you're done, though, those Airstream frames and exteriors last forever -- I should know, I've been living in one for three years!
@@0xKruzr All of those are excellent ideas! My first thought (aside from the heat and general safety concerns) was the propane situation. I believe propane freezes at around -44 or so degrees (F), so it does have to be stupidly cold, but why risk it?
That said, I can't wait to see what the dude does to this thing. On the exterior, it looks like the best thing he'd have as a camper once it's all fixed up. Probably. I do like Steve and Buglass, though.

Seriously cool rig! It’s got to be one off. If you had any propane on board, you could just light a burner on the stovetop, warms it up pretty good and perfectly safe.
Have you thought about designing your own RV? If you do, suggest double pane glass windows all around and plenty of durable insulation to keep all compartments warm :)
hey heres a hint for being in the cold us mainuhs. we use those hand warmer things under our clothes usually on the base layers when going outside in the cold and also on our feet :) really popular with hunters. hello from maine :) great vlog tyvm

My dad has a 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado in front of his house, i really love how the engine sounds when we get it running

My 30" Airstream makes a lousy winter camper. Been in it down to 27° and didn't freeze anything up, but it's hard to get warm enough. Best thing you can do to help it stay cooler in the summer is give the roof 2-3 coats of Tropicool white roof coating. It will seal the roof rivets also.
I know that front end... 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado. Flip up headlight covers, 455 Big Block with Front Wheel drive. No transmission hump in the front floorboard, and get this, a rolling speedometer.

I drove truck for a lot of years and spent the night at that rest stop plenty of times ...it definitely gets fridged in that part of the world
@Mav . Your stuff is always fun to watch. You truly encompass MN in the winter. I live in my 1984 Dodge B150, and I take it all around the US, but my homestead is Cambridge Minnesota. That's where I am at the moment, soon to mosey on down to the Twin Cities. Thankfully, my van has heat lol! The issue I'm foreseeing in the future is lack of gasoline. I have to run non-ox (on account of my engine being carbureted). I sometimes go a few days without a way to charge my phone or laptop, thusly I'm also a Ham Radio Operator. Which I also have set up in the van. Tis fun, but cold.
When the Toronado came out, John Hall, the stepson of the founder of Airstream designed a motorhome that used the engine and front drive train of the Toronado. He started a company to build these Revcon motorhomes. They were said to handle like car and could go 100 mph. I'll be watching when Mav gets the Aironado up to 100.
Mav 1 recommendation I would make is to reverse the door on the side to open the other way that way it will never open while driving
That door's going to leak like crazy driving in the rain the way it is. On seeing that basic of a mistake I would have run away from the deal as the rest is probably equally badly done, and on watching this vid my suspicions about the quality of work seem to be proving true. I fear this one is going to be a nightmare...

Hi Mav, my mum and grandma always added potato to their curries as it was a easy/cheap way to bulk it out. Just added a bit more spice where needed, and if you cba doing rice, it gives a nice carb boost too.
If you cut a couple of the potatoes into really small cubes, as you cook them they fall/dissolve to make the sauce really nice too. X

As a Former Chef, I can tell you Grating Potatoes, or other Root Vegetables into a Stew or Sauce is a Kitchen trick for Thickening things ..
I enjoy eating. I try to do it a couple times a day.

It's amazing how cold it gets in a vehicle without heat. You'd think the engine would warm up the cabin but it doesn't. Buying the heater was a great idea, too bad it didn't work out. Another great show from Mav. I've got admiration for him and Steve. I really enjoy their shows. Thanks again and good luck with The Thing. Looks like a UFO to me.
As soon as the heat is turned off the cold takes over! I slept in my jeep for quite some time and I didn’t want to run it all night so when I turned it off it was immediately cold again .
I would have atleast lit 1 burner of the lpg stove immediately! Calculated risk.
@@memyself4431 I have an idea about how to deal with that. Get 5 foam insulation panels without adhesive. They are 48inx8ft, big enough to build a small enclosure around your sleeping pad. Duck tape to hold it together, and cut the panels as needed to fit inside the vehicle. I have a Honda Hatchback and believe it or not, I can put a cot in the back. So this is my idea for keeping warm.
@@kat13man good idea. dealing with the cold the worst part is whatever surface you sleep on, if that's insulated and you are sheltered from wind (being in a vehicle) then it isn't so bad when you are in a properly rated sleeping bag
Camping in the cold is one of my favorite things to do, as long as I have a good heater and sleeping bag. I'm jealous of your Airnado.

Can't wait for Mav to finish this RV and go on a long road trip with it. This RV will definitely give him more comfort on the road. As much as I love seeing him going on adventures in his white truck it would be nice seeing him going on an adventure in either Steve or this one.

bought my kids a 12v electric blanked when his heater blower motor crapped out... works great in the meantime... check out those little diesel heaters seem to be popular in vanlife... good luck, south Chicagoland is my neck of the woods rn.... hopefully that beast holds out for ya.

The Coachman came with two slightly used cat litter boxes , one heavily used lint covered butt plug , three broken Jackerys and four hours of security video of late night snuggles of Tubby and Robert.
It only took five gallons of Fabreez to tamp down the smell of ' kitty poo and Tubby too '.
I like this guy's style of videos, enjoyable to watch.

Just an idea to keep your van a bit warmer. (I'm in Australia, so I'm no expert on the negative temperatures you're getting). Close the curtains(drapes?) Maybe hang blankets over the windows as well. That should retain the heat and stop it all escaping through the glass. Maybe also hang a blanket to separate the drivers cab from the living/sleeping quarters.

Not a bad idea, an old RV will lose a lot of heat thru thin single pane windows. It's pretty common to block the glass with insulation in winter.
Thanks for the adventure. Living in Chicago I can almost relate to the cold you experience in Minnesota.
Reupholster, change the carpet and any other fabrics and you will have an awesome camper. I love the look.
