      Being posted on April 1st doesn't automatically make it a joke. There is nothing in the description, nor any pinned comment, saying it is. It's put in the gaming category, not comedy. There are no tweets on his Twitter denouncing the video, and when asked about it being an April Fool's Day joke, he neither replied nor liked the tweet. However, when thanked for the advice to not buy the game, he DID like the tweet.
      There's nothing suggesting it was an April Fool's joke. In fact, everything suggests otherwise.

      The same series that explored illegal human trafficking in the Carribean, drug trafficking and dictatorships in Asia, African Warlords, Racism, and Blood diamonds. Every Far Cry until 4 had a deep narrative. In Primal, there was a shift towards a gameplay focus. Not that makes it any worse but saying it has never made any social commentaries is just wrong.

      Rachel Morocco Alot of those "silly" social programs save lives and help people that need it. Also if you think any capitalist society believes in you "keeping" that money of yours then you've drunk too much cool aide. Besides...Fascism which is the Right Wing variant of Communism requires Slavery to Function. So I'd say that inhernetly that makes Right Wing values more selfish and malicious, that being said Left Wing Values are inherently anti-individualistic to the point that in their version of an Extremist regime people often get worked to death anyway because it's assumed what is good enough for the man living alone is good enough for the man and woman and child.
      Neither system is ideal at the extremes, but inherently Leftism makes a much cleaner, well constructed and educated society than a Right Wing society at the Moderate end of the spectrum. Just look at Australia once a thriving culture now full of homeless and misery all because the Liberal Party (Ring Wing Party) is obsessed with getting rid of "silly" social programs. The Right Dismantle, The Left Implement. Implementing for the sake of implementing can be damaging but dismantling for the sake of dismantling will always do more damage. This is why I will always be more Left-Wing than Right-Wing.
      Your prefered system of government is inherently cruel selfish and leads to far more poor and displaced individuals than the alternative. This is fact.

    If a game misses out on a chance for political commentary that's YOUR personal gripe. That's not a knock on the game itself. The majority of us don't care about political commentary in our video games. We get enough of that crap everywhere else.
    Also, political commentary in a work of fiction/fantasy is worthless because those mediums are inherently subjective representations that the artist will simply mold to fit a biased perspective, a perspective no more informed than anyone else's. It's a waste of time and resources as it will not change anyone's mind and only serve to piss people off.

      CozmicK G In my opinion games can have politics but it depends on how the developers approach how it's communicated to the player. I think they should be approached in a way that it is an element of the World building making for a more believable world with its own conflicts but should always be open to the players interpretation and should never take sides, or the player could simply ignore it completely. I personally feel like games are a very powerful medium like books and movies that can express many messages and ideas of our world.

    I feel that it basically dodged a bullet in that sense. Yes, you could make it take a leftist or a right wing narrative, criticizing real world events as it went along. But when you pander to one side, you alienate the other. I am actually glad that Ubisoft refrained from politicizing Far Cry 5 and gave us what essentially is, another Far Cry game. No more.
    I think that this is a design decision that alludes to the escapist style of world building, which, I am intensely grateful for, considering the grim mundanities of life and it is better for it.

    Was it? When the hell did that happen? What trailer did they hint that was the focus? The most I got even close to that was maybe tackling religion and the cultish behavior it spawned. Outside of that I never once got that idea. At least until I read the gaming media articles and it all started to click. You listened to Polygon and Kotaku who were propping this game up as some commentary on Trump's America. Then when it didn't live up to its falsely created hype you blame the game and not the people created this fake hype to begin with.

      Yeah, then they'll b*tch and moan because it's *too* political. I wish people would make up their bloody minds and commit to what they want. The problem is a form a "two-way confirmation bias". If it's not as controversial as they want, they'll whine. If it is controversial, they'll still whine. You, quite literally, can never make them happy.
      For someone like me who's is probably one of the least politically-correct people you'll meet, this becomes incredibly annoying. As an aspiring indie game developer, I've been tempted to create one such game taking place in a corrupt and morally-bankrupt world which is rather politically-incorrect but still a great trip for even the average care-free player -- admittedly, that would be me trolling those folks who get triggered by every little thing.

      My biggest fear is that, between the whole micro-transaction/customer abuse drama and the increasing political intolerance in gaming, the industry is ripe for another crash like back in '83. On the other hand, maybe that's what is necessary every few decades to drive developers to do better. The sad part is that that would heavily punish indie and smaller developers who are not quite so corrupt. However, maybe that opens up the floor for them to push in a new era even as more established players like EA and Ubisoft struggle a bit.

      You liked a video agreeing with your perspective, but you get hung up on all the games he's criticizing because they reflect poorly on your taste in games. He does praise good games on occasion, but non-nintendo games throughout 2017 and early 2018 are mostly disappointments. Comparing a game relative to the crap pile surrounding it doesn't make the game good. A game is good when it's good. If you want to affirm your taste in games, I suggest watching IGN. They rate roughly everything 9/10

    • @SpartanWolf222
      @SpartanWolf222 6 років тому +47

      To those who say, "Far Cry has NEVER been about social or political commentary." Please remember the following:
      Far Cry 1: You are an ex-special forces soldier escorting a journalist who knows information on a genetic engineering facility involving the genocide of the local islanders. Areas were designed to mimic real life landscapes in the Southeast Asian islands as well as the remnants of WWII Japanese bunkers.
      Far Cry 2: You fulfilled contracts for various political factions in the African savanna as one of many mercenaries for hire by an official government in order to assassinate a weapon suppler named Jackal who was making profits from his global arms' trade. Your money supply was blood diamonds you earned from your contracts, and the game world revolved around the political factions fighting among themselves.
      Far Cry 3: Jason's story is one meant to show the desensitization of violence through its constant repetition as he fights off Vaas and his pirates who kidnap wealthy people like him for ransom. Drug trades, pirates and more are the tools of trade on Rook Island while the Western world remains largely indifferent to get involved in the island's affairs. The island itself holds many smaller politics from the tribal traditions to the CIA operative you find who can help you.
      Far Cry 4: Ajay is a Kyrat/American who is coming back to his home country to spread the ashes of his mother before he gets roped into the civil war among Pagan Min's men and a resistance based on the traditional Kyrats. Various aspects of the game's narrative and story make Ajay make decisions which have ramifications on the future of Kyrat, which further cements how much of a stranger he is in a land he should call home.
      The only Far Cry games that lack any meaningful social/political commentary are Blood Dragon and Primal, though one could argue the prehistoric tribes' narrative could display some social aspects as the precursors to modern society.

      Far Cry 5 was heavily hyped by the editors to (finally ?) have a real political sense to it, especially considering the global political context of today (xenophobia, hatred, etc.). I guess it can be disappointing for some people when playing the game to see that it has been politically toned down before release. We don't just seek "having fun" in a game, or at least some people don't, because a game is also a cultural artifact that is always political in a way.

    Injecting politics into this game would have been a huge mistake, it would have alienated half of Ubisoft's potential audience and would have only encouraged people who don't really play that many video games in the first place. Ubisoft made the right call, I think if you want a game that goes more serious and in depth into a message you need to turn towards more indie games where they can take that risk because they don't have to make back multi million dollars in development costs.

    Damn, so i just finished the video, hmm gotta say ~ This is one of those videos where i dont see your PoV. To me this is a Sandbox thats filled to the brim with little details and atmosphere with that blissfulll soundtrack and radios often heard in the distance playing propaganda. The constant random events on the roads and even off road ambushes. I NEVER feel like im running around in the vast nothingness of the country because of that. I just feel sorry you were so stuck on the story's silent protagonist to not be able to lay back and enjoy this games 80's action hero "Not take itself too seriously" attitude.

    • @PoorFoxface
      @PoorFoxface 6 років тому +5

      I think his point is that if you're going to advertise your game before launch about how the story's going to go into all these sociopolitical issues, then the game's story should actually do that.
      If the player character had been customisable but still voiced (e.g. Fallout 4) then the game could have gone into those issues by letting the player make dialogue choices that fit their views, or the kind of character they wanted to play as. That way, Far Cry 5 could have catered to most political views AND still dealt with the issues Ubisoft said it would in the run-up to release, rather than force it to try to please everyone all at once by de-clawing the social commentary.
      For players like you who don't mind just having fun with the game's sandbox and not dealing with political stuff, it would be easy to add dialogue options for that too, rather than force you to sit through monologues from characters -- it doesn't seem like that bothers you too much, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind having a 'skip dialogue' option sometimes, which a more active dialogue system usually has.
      By having a silent protagonist, there's no opportunity to do anything but sit and listen -- in earlier games your character would take part in conversation, and even if you didn't agree with them 100%, the immersion was better because it made you a participant in the story, rather than just a witness. DT still likes the game, but I think this is part of what bothers him about FC5's silent protagonist with regards to story.
      Hope this was helpful!

      Yeah the silent MC isnt any fun, like i actually preferred the fish out of water "All these people are crazy" personality that Jason and Ajay had. Least they would make comments about what they're thinking. Even Primal's MC had some things to say that i liked hearing. But this whole video is so depressing like yes the MC is silent. it sucks we know it realllllly does suck but talk about the rest of the game. Everytime i go on i spot more little details like an example, Cheeseburger the bear will stand on his hind legs and roar when any Wolf Judges are around the player and they'll immediatly turn tail, whimper and run. Like im spotting stuff like that constantly that im never expecting. For a dude whos videos i always watch and has a good eye for game quality i was expecting to hear him also see the handcrafted feel this game has. Not just make a depressing video like this just focusing it one thing. Its like when the DOOM angry review came out. I was expecting Joe to praise the games little care for handholding and tutorials and all that but he mentioned none of that good stuff, Then i found the Gamertrons DOOM review (Worth a watch btw) he pointed out so much that i didnt even think about and noticed all the quality things about it, eh i but Downward Thrust didnt notice all of this games quality. Just kind of.. a bunch depression over the MC.

      i don't really remember Far Cry 4 having much dialog from Ajay to begin with, there has been plenty of things i wanted Ajay to say or take part in but he was actually incredibly quiet which threw me off a little, even the main protagonist in Primal was quiet
      but i get where this thread is coming from, i think one thing that made the whole 'Silent Protagonist' really bad was the customization in the game is sub-par (i wasn't expecting anything on Fallout 4's level mind you) i made a character that's not even close to how i want him to look, how can i immerse myself with a character i don't even like?
      i think what could also help with the Silent Protagonist issue would have been thought provoking choices like sparing seed Family members, or stuff, ya know

      There are politics and political themes in the game....but it's very superficial. For instance, Hurk's father is totally MAGA and a knuckle dragging Trump supporter no doubt....but it's exaggerated to comic book level stereotypes....that's it. Where the lack of depth fails though is in explaining in a real world way how a cult leader like Joseph got to where he is and why he has so many followers. Those things are glossed over. But the point of a Far Cry game has never been to think about those deep issues. Not saying that shouldn't change...and it could very well lead to a richer gaming experience....but that opportunity was missed again this time. Maybe this is something that changes in the formula of future Far Cry games. However, looking at the great sales numbers of FC5, I don't think Ubi will be sufficiently motivated to change the formula too much for the time being.

      Yeah another dumbed down FPS. Fun, satisfying gameplay is priority but I think a more thought provoking story would be so refreshing. Just for example AC origins had history and politics with fun gameplay, those two aspects added something mentally stimulating. Many gamers including myself aren't happy with just killing and having a laugh, we need to be intrigued and engaged on a deeper, mental level with story, history and politics / political commentary especially if you're playing a 50+ game. DT is correct in his video, FC5 had the potential to have an amazing, intriguing, thought provoking story with an engaging protagonist with his own take on what is happening around him. These negative commenters saying DT is wrong and story doesn't matter sound like dumb, casual, easily pleased gamers.

      James xzavian first of, if the game handled the story seriously it would not have been anti Christian because the cultists are radical Christians not moderate. Also, Trump really has no place being in this discussion. Furthermore, the game did not need to be anti white. All it had to do was show a town in rural America that believed their race was superior to another. Lastly, no, most people are not complaining because it was not 'anti right'. People are complaining because the game was shown as gritty and serious, but instead it is the oppisite. I feel like you have immediately jumped to the extremes.

    I just had a thought, hear me out(Spoiler Alert). What if the silent protagonist is the point. So they basically imply with the character customization that metaphysical "you" are the character in the game. They feed you a narrative you simply accept with no option to resist, just along to observe. I think its a commentary on how many of us in real life just let ourselves be fed narratives and simply observe,our common indifference or ignorance towards our situation. Even part of the plot has the whole country in the dark about what's going on in a huge swath of a state. The one moment you have to resist,to act with true agency, ends the game in 10 minutes. Almost to say that nothing that would have followed actually mattered. The Sheriff even says "none of us would've gotten out alive," the fate of us all if we continue to ignore the issues that face our world.
    Tl,dr FarCry 5 wants you to stop being sheeple 🐑.

It is like politics in sports, not every facet of life needs to have politics injected into it, people need a place to to escape it.

    • @Dsworddance22
      @Dsworddance22 6 років тому +17

      YuGiOhDuelChannel it's not about the game not being enough left-wing. From what I get from the video, he is just saying that he was disappointed that the game didn't present any interesting political or social commentary. Ubisoft did say the game will "shock and scare you," but there's none of that in the game. He just wants this type of stuff in the game to challenge the player (which also leads into why the silent protagonist is not good) and make players think about these types of things. Of course you can say that you don't want politics in the game and the game should only be a playground, but just because you don't want it doesn't mean other people don't want it as well. He called it a missed opportunity because he thinks the game could have been better if they engaged with social and political commentary, regardless if it's left wing or right wing.

I don't particularly like either J.B. or A.G. and I only like R.P.C. because he's an over-the-top parody of '80s action movie protagonists. So, thank you for selling Far Cry 5 to me harder than anyone else until now! I can't wait to play it and make my own character. Who's it gonna be? Takeshi Kovacs? Agent 355? Miho? Frank Castle? I'm confused because i seen the negative reviews from places like polygon and the ignorant reasoning behind it but what is your problem here just that the story isn't good enough or that the bs political problems being blown up by liberals in this country aren't the central point of this game. Racism is at an all time low in the US and the only problems we have aren't related to sexism, racism, or anything other than the rich using us as pawns for their own entertainment. Games should have their own worlds and bringing real life issues into them will always piss off a large group of people and apparently staying out of it isn't good enough for the sjw culture that has spawned from the ignorant people in this country that have never struggled a day in their lives.

    I want the next far cry game to give the message that people who want gun control are stupid. That’s the message that I want if it gets political. “People who want to ban guns are dumb.”
    The game should pound this message home as we see defenseless people and their families and children dying in terror while armed people are able to defend themselves and escape. I’d love the game so much if it did that...
    If you disagree with me, and you think that’s a terrible idea, or disagree with the message I want, then you understand why some people don’t want social justice pants-wetting in our shooter games. Trump won, and it’s a good thing, because someone needed to remind this country that elections are not a mere formality, and that a self righteous belief that you’re on the “good guys’ side” doesn’t make it true. Or relevant.

    This game does exactly what it should have done. It shouldn't take a radical left wing or right wing approach to social issues. I appreciate your points because they are sincere and therefore respectable but I think the point of Far Cry may only be to have fun. I prefer to sit down and enjoy a play whether I am angry at the President or not. Maybe the point was to offend equally like say south park or not at all. Thank you for your content I know a lot goes into what you do.

    games are for FUN not to spout political bs into your face like Star Wars new trilogy putting the Franklin Cover up into life skrew political bs following the current SJW narrative think for yourself and use games as an escape. stay far far away from political propaganda it wasnt liked in the last jedi and its not liked in games just play a game for its own alt universe story. Stop pressing your ideas into a video game. If everything is in politics as in games we could never take a break from the depression of life. Have you ever played games in 90s just have fun play and escape dont bring the crap of today into games man.

Great game but they missed out

  • @mobyrne1970

    I agree that the main characters inability to reply in any given situation is an issue. Add to this the fact that you are 'caught' at internals to progress the storyline no matter what you do. All in all I am rely enjoying this game (just started the third area) and these points haven't stopped me playing.
