  • The Retevis Ailunce HD2 DMR radio is finally here!
    A few weeks before this post was published, Retevis reached out to ask if I would test an update to the Retevis Ailunce HD1. I've been using the Retevis Ailunce HD1 since late 2023. I also knew the Retevis Ailunce HD2 was incoming. Both are capable radios! Here's a video of the Retevis Ailunce HD1 water ingress protection capabilities. • Retevis Ailunce HD2 DM...

    Looks like AnyTone needs to step up their game. Especially for the IP rating.

      Agreed. The Anytone would be my pick but not waterproof.

    I wonder about the screen bightness during day light. Can you actually see the screen in the day light? HD1 is totally useless in this regard

    What are the upgrades/improvements from the HD1? Like a compare and contrast?

    Interested to see how your testing of this radio goes. I've been interested in the Aliunce HD1 but I'd heard about issues it has with being easily desensed and I didn't like the lack of AES256 encryption support. This update seems like it would compare favorably with the AnyTone AT-D878UVII Plus or its Btech 6X2 clone.

      indeed. please check out the blog post in teh video description. I speak about the difference with some of the HD1 issues.

      The Anytone and Btech need IP rating upgrades now to be competitive IMHO but great radios.

    Hello - is AES128/256 confirmed? It wasn’t listed on the specs on Retevis’ website. Many comments on their IG post complaining of this missing. Just curious. Thanks

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  7 місяців тому +4

      It is. During our discussions, I pointed out this missing feature. Pointed to lots of different comments on my blog and the videos regarding AES256. Their engineers put in some work to see if it would fit in the available memory space, and it did. They sent me an updated firmware a few days ago. 👍

    This radio has a major issue. The TX is locked to 144-146Mhz, 430-440Mhz. My local VHF and UHF repeaters are outside of the transmit frequencies and non of the three Frequency Sets in the CPS expand the TX beyond this range.
    The radio is useless to me as a HAM.

      You can spread the frequency band by following the steps below:
      Press Menu+6+turn on the radio, enter the password 654321. Type the frequency range you want to use

    Thanks for cov6thus, Julian. Any possibility you've played with interoperability? I e got a TYT and was able to cobble it to talk to my Anytone. Will the Retevis speak the same code plug?

      @OH8STN  7 місяців тому +2

      The HD1 could. No word on the HD2 yet but I'm hopeful. I'll reach out to find out the do a Mars mod video.

    Question, what is the aes 256 encryption used for on this radio. I thought that was a no no in ham radio unless the keys were published and in public domain?

    Have you tested Spectral Purity?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  6 місяців тому

      Yes. It puts out some spurious emissions on 70cm from 2m TX. Not bad but definitely there. Much better than a baofeng, not nearly as good as a VX from Yaesu.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  7 місяців тому +2

      If it can I haven't figured out how to do it yet. Almost all of the keys can be reassigned to other functions, but I haven't found this setting yet for that particular key.

      I'm not sure yet. I chose this one for its AES-256 encryption and bluetooth audio.
      I'll try t find out though.

    Im struggling to find any reason to upgrade from the HD1 to the HD2. Bluetooth audio I've never used on the Yaesu FT3D or IC705, Encryption for us in the UK is a no no, and 300,000 contacts has been enough for me.
    Would of been a better upgrade for it to have proper APRS, TalkerAlias support. I just get the idea its a FT3D vs FT5D situation.

      Agreed. The BT is nice for my fatbike portable trips. The AES256 will hopefully never become useful 🤣

      I believe they're working on the support website already. Just like tge HD1 support site, the HD2 will have a dedicated site.
