    Hey Julian! Great to see you! About 2 years ago I had a crazy car crash and a stroke. My brain zapped a lot of the information I used to know regarding radio. Just the other day I made two HF contacts and a 2m contact. I'm trying to get my knowledge back! It's slowly coming back! I want to tell you thank you so much! Your knowledge and your drive is so valued! As I get my brain back in order, eventually I'll talk to you on the air! I am reviewing your videos on the Pi. Lol! -K0JWQ Adam!

    Why are most QRP field radios not water resistant? If they are truly designed to be used in the outdoors, why not make the units at the very least IP66 (Like most if not all HT radios).
    When I go hiking, I always bring the Lab599 and leave the IC705 at home. On more than 1 occasion it's rained on me while establishing communications. Knowing my unit can survive getting wet brings peace of mind.

    Is there any reason a QRO (100w) radio can't have low current consumption when running only 5-10w? I would think that would target a much wider audience than a QRP only rig. I must be in the minority customer base because none of the new offerings are targeting my interest in an all band all mode 100w field radio. I'm still using a 25 year old IC706MKIIG.

    • @stahpit1971
      @stahpit1971 3 місяці тому +5

      I'm still using my 706MKIIG also and no you are not a minority in wanting an all mode 100-watt radio I don't understand why they have abandoned the 857/706 capabilities mobile radio. Even a 20-watt field radio would have put them in the spotlight.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  3 місяці тому +7

      There is no reason they can't do it. Look at the PA500 amplifier, 100 w with less than 12 amps of current consumption, and 80ma rx current. The community hasn't demanded it.

      @@OH8STN with the awareness that you and others have raised in the EMCOMM community, a new version of the 857 would be quite desirable. I own the TX 500, the FTDX 10 and the 991 and the radio I use the most is my 857 in a backpack with a chameleon TDL. The one thing I don’t like about the TX 500 and the BAT 500 is all of the freaking cables that spider out of it…adding the PA 500 to that for me feels like a wirey nightmare… and it was your videos that inspired me to do it. 😉🫡

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  19 днів тому +1

      @andyprisco4870 I completely agree with you about the tx500. Why they would put all these cables coming out of both sides of the radio, will never know. It makes absolutely no sense to me. It's a great radio, but reminds me of a tentacle monster.
      If the 857 were low current (under 500ma), I would completely agree. That's probably it's only flaw. If it had an internal audio interface on an updated model, that would be a benefit as well.

    Wish they would add 1.25m for U.S. operation. I just bought the Icom 705/905 'twins' to operate in shf/microwave and Amateur TV so I'd like to see something similar from Yaesu. Maybe bring back 33cm for the US market also. Icom's 905 is missing the 10cm band and I wish there was an offering higher than 10 GHz (limit of the 905) and maybe with an integrated transverter at 10 or above (only offered as a separate unit for the Icom). Yaesu should strive to make their '905' truly portable with an integrated battery like the 705 and FTX-1F have. It would be cool if Amateur TV was supported directly by one of the 'Big 3'.

    • @ChatGPT1111
      @ChatGPT1111 15 днів тому

      I mentioned the 705 for microwave because that is actually the standard for lower power microwave when used with a 3rd party transverter all the way to 100 GHz. The 905 of course is fully self-contained from 2 meters all the way to 1.2 2.4 and 5 GHz. With the Icom transverter it can also work 10 GHz.

    This is the radio that should’ve came out instead of the FT-818nd . I suppose better late than never, it does have the optional external cooling fan for ft-8 and external atu so it’s a very modular portable system however I wonder why they didn’t incorporate the cooling fan as standard in the radio itself or in the atu in the development phase.
    I suppose we will see what the accessories are available once it’s released

      @@OH8STN I think that’s the unfortunate part is that icom has a 4 year head start with the 705 so the market share they are targeting has been utilised and there’s the xeigu range which is capable while in a lot of people’s budgets in the current financial situation. So sadly other manufacturers have kind of stolen a march

    @5:49 Looking at Yaesu's estimates... HF operation is estimated at 9 hours of use, implying a draw of 0.63 amps, or 630 mA (5.67 Ah / 9h = 0.63 A). V/UHF is estimated to be 8 hours of use, implying a draw of approx. 0.71 amps, or 710 mA (5.67 Ah / 8h ≈ 0.71 A). There's nothing official listed on Yaesu's website yet, though, so it's all "back of the envelop math" until then.

    • @adamjones8218
      @adamjones8218 3 місяці тому

      The Fan clips onto the radio body then the ATU attaches to that based on pictures I've seen - definitely makes the radio a bit thicker, not necessarily an issue. However, not even ip66 rated, is getting frustrating with so called field radios.
      The battery is quite large and not HT compatible, that's how they're getting so much run time.

    Hi Julian, Yaesu confirmed that 4 meters (70 MHz) will be available on this radio. Just my thoughts: since this radio provides two separate receivers it's now one of the only portable radios that can do satellite comms on the fly where you can transmit and listen to your own transmission (f.e. QO-100). Also I do like the modular system of adding the tuner and optional fan togheter with the battery. My guess is that this radio consumes a little more juice taking the DSP and color touchscreen into account. Nice to see C4FM but hardly used when portable I guess. My only concern so far, will the color display be bright enough to use in the open field? Best 73, Phil ON4VP

    Having open API is about as essential as wireless device support. Support for audio over network can be done in many ways, but there is a trap; nobody would like to have a radio with support for network audio using something that is popular now, but will be dead in few years. Think about having a flagship radio with built in network audio made with Skype of early 00's instead of open standards.

      @4X4-RADIO Yeah, it's the same for me. The thing about efficiency is it's complicated. Even if we're using an external battery, if the current consumption of the radio is too high, we quickly deplete that battery, whether it's internal or external. The thing about the tx500 and the ic-705 is that they have extremely low current consumption, both rx & tx. I would even go as far as to say the 705 is The Benchmark to beat. Even with Wi-Fi and bluetooth, wireless data, it's still runs at under 300 milliamps. The efficiency is also good for the Elecraft kx2, though it doesn't have the same feature set. If the current consumption is too high, we find ourselves needing to carry larger, heavier battery packs for longer run time in the field. We also have to pay attention to the transmit current at full output power. For example, the PA 500 amplifier can put out to 60 watts with under 10 amps. The expedition model 100 watts at under 12 amps. Xiegu G90 puts out 20 watts at under 4 amps.
      I think if this radio takes more, it's okay since it's just a hobby radio. But if we're going to be doing serious field work with it for extended periods of time, we'll need to find a way to reconcile the higher current consumption.
      Apologies if I'm rambling but the reason this is important to me is because I use these radios for survival. Carrying an additional heavy battery, means I have to leave something else behind. That might be additional food, additional water, or some tools or equipment I would rather carry than the bigger battery pack. Even with the dual rx, it's not full duplex so it's not really important for me. If it were full duplex that feature alone would make me more forgiving for the high current consumption.

    I know Japan doesn't have the same bands as the US, but i'd love to see the 220 band.
    I assume it has Fusion. what would impress the #@&& out of me is if they also had DMR & M17.
    I want a true multi-mode. I like D-Star, but it's propritary and i've been told DMR isn't.
    A tuner option is nice, but I'm a big fan of the swr scanner on the X6100. it's just easier to watch
    and adjust at the same time. I own mostly Icom's and have never been a fan of the bar-graph SWR.

    I think the biggest issue with this radio is that they took so long to bring it to market. Yaesu had enough time to listen to what people didn't like about the 705 and improve upon it. Icom did all of their market research for them and did not listen, disappointing. I have been waiting for Yaesu's response to the 705 before committing to a new qrp rig, and it wont be the ftx-1f.

    how readable is the color display in normal outdoor sunlight? I have an HT (Wouxun KG-UV9K) with color display that is totally unreadable outdoors in normal daylight conditions. I bought for satellite comms outdoors during the day. I was unable to return the radio to the seller. Otherwise nice radio, dual trx airband 8.33khz step etc. But the totally awful display makes it a POS. I wrote many emails to Wouxun . I have not received a reply to any of them. My advice before you buy any radio with color display, take it outdoors in the sunlight. My Baofeng UV 5R has a readable display outdoors.

    What a disappointment, we already have the IC705, why do we need a Yaesu copy of the Icom radio. Yaesu seems to lack any form of creativity or imagination, they just slavishly "copy" what is already available.. Perhaps Yaesu should have looked at the TX550 from 599 Labs and tried to better it. Receive current should be below 100 mA (150 mA max). Regards, VK1XP
