  • Presenting a thorough demonstration of a 2015 Porsche Cayman S with 6-speed manual transmission including Sport Chrono Package--including the rev-matching function--and Porsche Sport Exhaust.
    I demonstrate the automated blip of the throttle with SP engaged, showcase some audio differences with and without Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) engaged, and finally demonstrate the function of hill hold assist, and auto restart upon stalling the engine.

    Auto re start on a stall is very cool! Let's face it, even the most experienced manual driver might stall rarely once every blue moon. Also helps a lot when learning the engagement point of the car if you've never driven a Porsche before. Auto rev match is kind of odd to me but it is defeatable so no harm, no foul. Very cool demonstration!

    • @MikeLudes
      @MikeLudes  8 років тому +1

      Thanks! Yep, it's better to stall than to slip the clutch. So it's quite normal and acceptable to stall every once in a while. The Hill hold feature is even better than restart to me.

  • @rporther
    @rporther 9 років тому

    Yes this was indeed quite informative. I suspect many of us Porsche 'armchair' enthusiasts assumed the clutch/throttle movement was just the a-ol' ordinary type but this shows you have to get used to the up and down shift features. You just don't want to be at 'kindergarten' level in even moderate traffic and guessing your way around the clutch. And I did put a like on the request if a cam could be placed to show the pedal movement.

    just test drove a 2014 Cayman S (preowned) with 7K miles and loved it. Intentions have always been manual however getting lots of pressure to purchase the auto PDK... i feel like automatic will take some of the fun out of driving... does auto increase performance that much that one should reconsider auto over manual?

    • @zenjitsuman
      @zenjitsuman 6 років тому

      The tests seem to indicate 0-60 mph a half second faster. A bit better gas mileage, and clutch won't wear out probably over the life of the car in normal driving. Having said that the rev matching manual will have less wear on clutch because its so smooth. If you want the car for shifting, don't care about a half second to 60mph, and does that so often then go for the manual stick and the 3.4L
      engine. Even in stop and go driving the car won't buck because of rev matching and you can creep along at 1 mph without stalling and if it stalls it starts right up on its own.

  • @tungming5749
    @tungming5749 8 років тому +6

    I dont get the point for a auto rev-match, rev matching and rpm reading is where the fun is when driving a manual. If you take that away,you might as well get a PDK.

    • @MikeLudes
      @MikeLudes  8 років тому +7

      Yeah, heel/toe is certainly more fun, but if you're doing something like an Autocross event where you're trying to have the best time, the rev-match is indispensable! And it can be deactivated if you prefer.

      They are fully different. I certainly can't describe them all here... the 2012 is the 987.2 series, the 2014+ is the 981 series. They have completely different chassis, engine, transmission, seats, console, dash, infotainment, suspension, wheels, etc.The one thing that is the EXACT SAME is the spirit of the mid-engine, light-weight sports car!!!

      Hello, it should not be a problem. If you go to the Porsche Tequipment page, you can find your vehicle and it will show the 987-generation Cayman 2.7 with Sport Plus. Google the Part number: "997 044 903 01" and you should get the info you're looking for!Regarding dealer installation, it is a Porsche genuine part, so they should be *happy* to take your money and install the software! Porsche will provide them with installation instructions. If they won't do it, they're either incompetent or lazy...

    • @MikeLudes

      ///M yes it does. Sort of like if you pressed the throttle 50% down, Sport would act like you pressed it 70% down and Sport Plus would be like 100%. (Those values are not accurate, but it’s sort of like that)
      Remember you can add Sport Plus programming and the button at your dealership, but only factory-optioned Chrono Pack will give you active engine and/or transmission mounts-an oft-overlooked benefit of Chrono Pack!

      @MikeLudes  6 років тому +3

      in the USA, model year 2017 was the release of the 718 Cayman model--the 718 introduced the 4 cylinder. Personally, I'm torn. In every technical way, the 718 is superior. But the classic flat-6 is irreplaceable.

      The 718 is actually louder than the old flat-6... in fact, a 718 S with Sport Exhaust is the loudest Porsche made right now. Seriously, louder than the GT3 RS! The 718 just needs to be warmed up for about 5 minutes before she really sings.

      Well yeah, if you stall, you have not created any wear on your clutch disc. As a salesperson, I get some very inexperienced clients who "think" they want a manual, but on the demo drive it becomes clear that they are not destined for manual transmission... they rev up to 2500 on flat ground just to get the car moving. Very damaging to the clutch, wears it out so much faster! Better to slowly release clutch at 1000 rpm and possibly stall, than to drag the clutch at 2500 rpm.

Hair-trigger throttle response pulling like the clappers from 3000rpm to redline. I laugh during and after every drive!!

      +Very Good I'm aware of what throttle lag is, I just can't really picture what it has to do with shifting into gear from a stop. No offence, I was just curious.

    Tallahassee, Florida, I recognize where you are driving.
    My '14 has PDK and while I honestly miss my clutch pedal, I have to say that this PDK transmission always knows what gear I want it to be in and in that regard it is almost telepathic.

      For this generation, Sport Chrono adds Sport Plus which gives the automated rev-matching feature. On the 981 generation, it's the only way to get rev-matching. Additionally, Sport Plus mode will adjust various vehicle features, such as engine throttle response speed, and optionally available equipment like Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) and Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM).

    Man, I'm not a great driver but I have to say - the way you operate the steering wheel is just bad. I just see too many people doing it like you on the internet. At the begining you unnecessarily do many small moves instead of doing one big turn. I'm fine with that - if you want to make it harder for you - your choice. But what you've done at 4:52 is just dangerous.

      It may be because Mr. Ludes is filming a video and talking at the same time, but there is a bit of lack of coordination between the hands on the wheel, hand on gear shift and acceleration. Perhaps just due to low concentration. Porsche gearbox is so good that corrects almost anything, but steering is so responsive that amplifies the small imperfections. Great video anyway.

    It's great and all, but I'll never ever understand why someone would want a manual that then rev matches for you. Totally defeats the point of a manual.

      Hand break turns is not drifting, it is doing a handbrake turn... Drifting you do by using the power of the engine to break the traction so the rear end slides.
