The critique of the chest opening in the woods is generally something I would agree with, but the title screen puts us in a shady, serene wood that is really calming. There are already lots of games with fanfare, I think it’s cool they went another direction with this :)
For some reason I never get tired of this genre, it rocks. I've played 7-8 of games like this now and this one looks very promising. You can tell they thought about balance, progression, everything looks amazing and it's 3 bucks. I may need to pick this one up for research purposes... Dang it splatter cat you got me again.
@@PlayrayGamer Yeah no problem. Vampire Survivers, Just King, Run Build Pew, Brotato, Neophyte, Spellbook Demon Slayers and one more but I can't remember the name of it because I uninstalled it. It was one of my least favorites anyway. Of those, I'd recommend Vampire Survivers, Brotato and Spellbook DS.
It's like the modern equivalent of browser based tower defense games. There were hundreds of them because it's a super simple concept but you can do it in so many different ways and get really creative with it and as long as you did it right there's a lot of gameplay value to be had.
@@bestieswithtesties That's a great comparison, I hadn't thought of that. I loved those too by the way. Actually, when you put it that way, these bullet heaven games kind of are tower defense games, you just play the tower! lol

Really happy you covered this game! The Dev is patching the game almost every day or two, that's why it's so different from the old demo version, and he even has more plans like characters and weapon talents and who knows what! I know you cover games only once most of the time, but I hope you play this again in 2-3 months and see what it has became then :D
@@Sifd I literally just finished watching your video upload of Rogue Genesia today, and am now checking out Splat’s video. I’ve been watching you’re videos of RG religiously the past month. I just left a comment for those who want to see more in depth gameplay and coverage of everything in the game, they should check out you and Chef Byers. Who’d have thought when I first found your channel it was from Slice and Dice, like a year ago, then when you started uploading Inscryption I got hooked, and now I can’t wait to watch your videos once you upload them. Doesn’t matter what you play, I’ll watch lol
Been watching Sifd play this game for the past couple weeks, the game has released on Steam, you can purchase it right now for $3. The dev is very active with the community on discord, if you’re looking for more in depth videos on the game and all it encompasses, I recommend watching Sifd or Chef Byers. I’m glad Splat decided to play and upload this video, it will give more people a chance to check out and play Rogue Genesia.
It would be a crime to charge more for them. When vampire survivors first came out I was so addicted I made my own version in Unity and it was probably the quickest and easiest game I've ever made. It's like in the same tier as tower defense games suuper simple to make but a lot of room for creativity. Now I've been addicted to PoE and have started incorporating a similar item system/skill tree in my game and I think I'll be charging an extra dollar for that.
One thing I'd like to see out of new (and even old) bullet-heaven games is a little more detail in the player sprite. In this one the sprite looks great, and is more animated than most, but it does that thing where it only faces left and right, and it doesn't even face away when moving up, so any up/down movement is moonwalking. This is done in a lotta twin-stick roguelikes too. For most it would take just 1 additional sprite set facing away (since it'd be mirrored), just to make it a little less weird, it doesn't need to be a full 8-directional movement set. Attack animations would also be nice, but that only really works when a game uses a primary weapon. None of that affects gameplay, and ultimately I'll accept it if the game is fun. It's just we're not playing as literal towers sliding around, so making the player characters a bit ore alive would be nice. I think it stands out a bit more in this game because the sprite is animated like that, makes the moonwalking more noticeable to me. All that said, another game for the collection. Wew~
4:01 Splat: "First thing that struck me is the stark art style... grimmer imagery, that's my preferred imagery like in the old Berserk anime. I want it that dark." 8:25 Also Splat,: "When you open the chest lights should be coming out of it, with like a ahhhh! like a fanfare, it's supposed to be a fun experience! ...and when it zooms in like the colorful rainbow lights are undulating and moving(...)" He's basically saying it should be more like Vampire Survival when he keeps saying that he wants games to try and break away from it. He even complained himself that the VS chest animation takes too long and gets old after a while. Personally I'm glad they don't make the player wait before checking out your rewards, and that they don't break the mood of the game just to be flashy like every other game.
This is one of the best vsls(vamp survivors-lights) out there atm, great game! Picked this one up after playing Bounty of One, beat world E a few days ago. There's alot to say about it, but it most def speaks for itself. Because of its style, World system and progression + unlocks, this one's got very good potential and potential longevity. Tmv~
Thaaaaaaaaaaaaank you, another quality purchase. Definitely first VS-like game that came out since VS that has actually been worth a damn. Props to the devs and thanks again for covering it :)
Rogue-survivors is the genre I've been referring to them as. Like vampire survivors, nomad survivors, brotato, etc., probably be more accurate to call them rogue arenas, but vampire survivors definitely launched the popularity of the genre, and as such they're survivor-likes
Great game. Went and bought this on Steam after watching this video and already sunk several hours into it. There is still room for improvment, but the core concept works. You can beat the game with multiple buids (though the Crit one seems to be most powerfull atm), and there is decent amount of unlocks to get. What needs to be added is better soundtrack, map and enemy variatey and ofc more and more stuff to upgrade yourself with. As long as the game keeps receiving love from the developer its ought to be a great fun title for some take it easy mindless gaming.
Damn, I has just seen this game on steam and wanted to take a look on a video, third time today that SPlatter just have a video of the game in question. Thanks man!
On one hand, I think it deserves to be more expensive, on the other, I didn't know it was that cheap and bought it only because you mentioned the low price.
If I recall the most common phrase for these kinds of games and the name that most people are trying to use right now is just simply bullet heavens. It’s supposed to be a play on words of bullet hell where instead of you dodging a bunch of bullets you are the bunch of bullets
I've already a fan of your work, but since you mentioned Berserk... YES i prefer that dak too. Perfect. Also, i've seen that vampire survivors putting back this genre on the map, I would love to see a video about the ancestor (in my eyes at least) of these games, one of the early "indie" games, Crimsonland. :)
100% agree with the no bosses angle. Nothing worse than getting nothing but aoe abilities in these types of games and then getting stuck soloing a boss who has massive ranger attacks while you are stuck trying to run 4 feet away from them so your only weapons can actually hit it for chip damage for the next 20 minutes. But try to focus on target damage you can’t survive the hordes.
u should play magic survival. very simular style game found it before vampire survivors. replayability is fun for me cause of different levels and all the cool ability fusions and cobinations u can unlock. love the channel! as far as i know magic survival is on android only.
Survival mode is really hard. Halfway through the passive upgrades for F and E rank, and I only just managed to get through 10 minutes on survival. Good game though.
The gameplay reminds me a little of the Tesla games Tesla V Lovecraft and Tesla Force meets STS or FTL with the Rog's mode. If anyone wanted to know, the game is ridiculously cheap. Currently its on sale for $2.69 USD but, it's $2.99 usually.
This subgenre is so amazing and booming, yet it's going unrecognised by major game journalism. Once these games go to consoles though, itll be crazy. These need to get to Switch asap.
Thanks for the video Splat. Been loving this genre, have this and Vampire Survivors so far. Quick note this one takes a bit more graphics horsepower than VS. Laptops with built-in GPU beware. Anyone have another game suggestion of this type?
20:27 um...that boss is straight up Dr. Livesey from soviet version of Treasure Island by Stevenson...I don't know how to feel about this. Amazing character in the cartoon, doesn't belong here
Based on the way so many of the other mobs, it looks like this is at least mostly a standard assets pack. Can't say as I've seen that one before though.
It's not exactly him, but definitely a reference to him(different outfit, bigger arms, etc). A meme of him walking blew up recently, so it was probably a bit of an inside joke by the creator.

That sounds very expensive. He showcases a new game almost every day.
Horde Survival is the term I continue to hear.
my first thoughts of the Protagonist's animation was "Ghosts 'n' Goblins" from back in the 80s - dude in armour with 3 or 5 stage animation
