Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Michael McKean showed Chucks emotions really well. It did not make any sense to him how Jimmy could pass the bar. It's so sad because Jimmy sincerely wanted to learn from his brother, but Chuck did everything in his power to kick him back down.
I know right? His face when he realizes he passed is like “This cannot be!”
I'm really not so sure that Chuck wanted to kick Jimmy back down. It was more like he never trusted his brother to be on the up and up, so didn't think he deserved working at HHM, but he always offered to help Jimmy out with his cases. Given Chuck knows of Jimmy's criminal record and bent of mind, plus the fact he didn't graduate from a good college seems like fair enough reasons to not hire Jimmy at HHM. Towards the end of BCS we see Jimmy's real regret in life is not taking Chuck up on his offer to guide him with his career.
And the subtle implication of his “why didn’t you come to me?” meaning he would have tried what he could to talk Jimmy out of becoming a lawyer.
Chuck wasn’t wrong. Slippin Jimmy was rotten to the core.
@@nemishasharma5737 Logically speaking yes. But Jimmy was right about Sandpiper. He served HHM a case that would make any lawyer's mouth water. After such a display of competence it was just personal vendetta that stopped Chuck from giving him a chance.
His hesitation at "are you proud of me?", and at the same time, Jimmy's hopeful, almost desperate tone as he asks... it's heartbreaking.
It's really well done by the actors. Chuck's hesitance followed by a "yes!" that plays it off like it's so obvious he's proud that he hesitated at the mere question, when he's really just contemptuous.
It's the little subtleties in how they deliver their lines that bring their characters to life in moments like this.
The fact that Jimmy even needed to goad chuck to say he’s proud is sad
The subtle Chunk glances are so well done and really show the disdain Chuck has towards Jimmy's lawyer degree. And you can really tell Jimmy really wants Chuck's approval. It's so heart-wrenching watching all their other scenes together.
Jimmy changed his entire life because of Chuck. Chuck saved him, but never wanted to see him succeed. That's why Jimmy tried everything to please Chuck for so long, despite getting no love in return.
Probably one of the best cold opens of the whole series. It outlines everything about the Jimmy/Chuck/Howard dynamic
💯💯
so true
cold as ice
Heartbreaking how it was always Howard who saw Jimmy’s “drive” , as Chuck described it, and his “get up and go”. Howard always thought highly of Jimmy, but Chuck made him the villain and made Jimmy think it was Howard who consistently screwed him over. Chuck deserved what happened to Howard at Jimmy and Kim’s hands; not Howard himself.
1:19 sudden burst of rage rapidly subdued in his face
Really gut wrenching man. He didn't even said anything appreciative regarding to Jimmy's success, he hardly said yes to his question if he was proud.
@@kayra2201True, though he did marvel at the hard work Jimmy put in to get there. “No one ever accused you of being lazy, every other dirty sin but not that one!”
3:25 Howard called him Charlie Hustle here too, how interesting, a small hint that Howard still liked Jimmy and he wasn’t the one who blocked him!
Love how Chuck uses the tape recorder that he later uses to get Jimmy’s confession in season 2. These small details go a long way.
Chuck asked the same question to Howard when he heard Jimmy got hired by Davis & Main. "As what?...oh as a lawyer."
Everyone loves Jimmy...except his own brother
And Mike.
and Walter
And Jesse
Walt and Jesse knew Saul not Jimmy😁
And Lalo
Funny how you never see Saul Goodman and Jimmy McGill in the same screen
Except at the very end of the show
@@EverythingTechTime Wdym jimmy mcgill, thats gene takavic.
@maxwell6881 yeah but Jimmy McGill came back at the very end
Kind of like that guy Clark Kent and Superman. Never see them on the same screen either.
Howard begging Chuck to give Jimmy a chance at HHM throughout the early days of his law career is such a sad sight.
3:51 I didn’t know that Howard was fluent in copying machine
Vravo Bince
I feel like this scene is more nuianced than just "Chuck hates that Jimmy passed the bar." Chuck seems like he's trying to objectively see it as an accomplishment for Jimmy and focus only on how much work it would have taken for Jimmy to achieve this, but still can't bring himself to see Jimmy as a "real lawyer." Chuck is still two-faced and looks down on Jimmy, but I think it makes the scene even more tragic because Chuck is trying to an extent to be proud of his brother but his own pride and feelings of superiority get in his way.
Two brilliantly written, acted, and filmed scenes that foreshadowed so much.
It was sad to see the series end.
It's clear as day that Chuck did not like the news of Jimmy becoming a lawyer
This hits sooo different when you rewatch the scene.
I already wrote on here but I think it was Cruel of Howard to say “let’s reassess in 6 months” like as if Jimmy is seriously gonna wait 6 months working tirelessly just for them to say no to him again.
Hell we already see that it’s been over a year (almost 2) and even brings them a sure fire case that is winnable and they still say no to him.
It’s no wonder why Jimmy harbored that much resentment against them and every other law firm. I’ll use a quote he says to Christie “they’ll smile at you and pat you on the back, but they are never, ever letting you in!”
Side note: I know Chuck was behind it, but still Howard made his choice to follow Chuck and push down the little guy.
Howard's biggest mistake was not forcing Chuck to confront Jimmy himself. Chuck was a coward, through and through. But Howard was Chuck's biggest enabler.
@@MrErizidI agree Chuck kept his issues inside and thus created the illness that plagued him to his death.
Don’t get me wrong Howard did have good intentions for Chuck and Jimmy, but when Jimmy needed a friend and support the most he was denied of it not because of his work ethic but because of his past.
It’s a shame cause Jimmy would’ve been a huge asset to them and even Howard recognized it later, it was just too late to try to salvage that.
Since Chuck had to call Howard again to tell him not hire Jimmy, it's likely that Chuck lied to Howard the first time and pretended like he was willing to hire Jimmy once he had more experience. I imagine Howard was on board the first time, since it's totally reasonable not to hire someone just out of law school.
Howard was very much on the wrong but he later apologized to Jimmy and tried to make amends literally offering him this very job and getting him the one in Davis and Maine.
@@Carlos-ln8fdwhile I understand that Howard did try to make amends he did it to the wrong person, the real person he should’ve offered the job too was Kim wexler.
That woman dedicated a lot of years to HHM and even was on a 2 year Partner plan. Unfortunately the kettleman thing happened and Howard took away her office and sent her to doc review.
She not only would’ve had to work more years to get her office again, but she would be put on a 10 year partner plan, all for something she had no control over.
Jimmy saved her career, then the commercial thing happened and just because she knew about it was enough to nearly fire her, but they decided to just keep her in Doc review to never be a respectable lawyer again.
Howard totally screwed her over the smallest mistakes and never apologized for it. Yes he respected her, but when it’s all said and done she was the biggest victim of How harsh the lawyer business can be.
Kim was so happy for Jimmy, she was the only one who knew and supported Jimmy through his Law schooling while working hard every single day.
Yet chuck saw Jimmy’s Letter and immediately thought he skimmed through it like it was nothing. Jimmy being a lawyer in his eyes was A mockery to his entire profession, and there was no way in hell Chuck would ever support it even if Jimmy were to tell him what he was doing.
Also given to how Chuck is kind of distant I think he and his wife divorced, or at least were in the process of the divorce which is making Chuck more and more unhinged.
Makes you wonder if the subconscious reason Jimmy didn't ask/tell Chuck is because he would have done everything to prevent Jimmy from becoming a lawyer.
@@legospaceman4978 Jimmy had no idea of the real Chuck. The reason he didn't tell is so he could surprise him and make him proud. As in "you studied, passed the bar all while having a 9-5 like the rest of us"
@@alonnie1919 That could be the response Jimmy was hoping to get.
Season 1 is so underrated
Who needs an enemy when you have a brother like Chuck
Howard's the type of guy to see a slice of cake and say "Don't mind if I do!"
Fr😭
I still remember that moment everyone hates Howard. But he's one of the best person you can find in BB and BCS universe😢
It was so easy to hate Howard-we all did-but the poor guy just willingly took the heat for Chuck’s agenda. I completely flipped my opinion when that came out, and it all made sense because of course it did
Go land crabs???
WHAT A SICK JOKE!
Land crabs? More like chimps with machine guns
“Jimmy, look what you’ve done here” can be taken two very different ways
Howard: You want the door open or closed?
Jimmy: Uh, closed.
Howard: Okay, well Chuck told me to leave it open so I'm going to go ahead and leave it open.
Jimmy: 😐
Chuck: you passed the Bar
Even though a criminal, Jimmy was as much of a lawyer as Chuck was, so the one thing he had over his brother was now gone
More like a Chimp with a Machinegun.
Chuck was so envious of Jimmy. If only he gave him a chance, he could have done so much good and wouldn't have gone down the criminal route.
Chuck uses the law to bring people down not just with Jimmy but everyone else he'll argue with. He never believed in the law of rehabilitation of course jealousy and resentment also made him who he was to Jimmy.
The sad thing about all these famous TV Shows is that they speak openly about various mental illnesses. For example 'The Sopranos' or 'Breaking Bad' and 'Better Call Saul'. They discuss how some people may be depressed or suicidal or be egocentric. Which is something that people have to live through day by day.
Jimmy tried his level best to lead a legitimate life but destiny had something else stored for him. Sometimes our own experiences in life are so similar.
Given our hindsight with Jimmy, Chuck and Kim as a trio and Howard managing things like the reputation of the firm HHM would've been unstoppable!
Howard gets the last slice with a piece of a scale on it, nice touch
This is the moment when Jimmy became James McGill Esq.
You passed the bar?
Damn, there must’ve been a power outage during this flashback. Everything’s so dim lighted
They don't call it the Dark Ages for nothing! It's the past.
When they closed the door to the mail room, i got a pit in my stomach. What could of been if Chuck was supportive? If at least they were honest with him, maybe he wouldn't have had that chip on his shoulder and needed to win to prove everyone wrong.
The show was so good. Poor Howard.
exact moment when jimmy pass the bar
Call me crazy for reading into it too much, but when Howard has that conversation with Jimmy and all we can hear is the sound of a copier machine - its almost as if the sound of the copier machine becomes Howards voice, just copying whatever Chuck told him to say to Jimmy
Just realized that Jimmy works with Bert and Ernie lol
"You're not a real lawyer."
YES ABSOLUTELY
The way I see it, Jimmy was ultimately looking for self-respect. Sure, he wanted Chuck's respect, but that was because he didn't have any for himself. If Jimmy had dedicated himself tirelessly to some cause that Chuck didn't approve of - say, mistreated electricians - Jimmy would have eventually realized that Chuck's judgment is too flawed to count on, and what matters is that he (Jimmy) is doing something to be proud of.
Sandpiper could have gotten Jimmy to some self-esteem too; unfortunately, Jimmy was in the habit of taking shortcuts, or measuring his worth by his material success. So he ultimately ended up reinforcing the things about himself that he knew made him a worse person. Indeed, Jimmy's behavior ultimately proved Chuck right, unfortunately.
At the end of the series, when Jimmy owns up in the courtroom, that is where I think he starts finally developing the self-respect that eluded him all along. He's taking responsibility; he's holding himself to some standards. He'd rather be a Jimmy McGill who's trying to make things right than a Saul Goodman who wriggles away.
If I were Jimmy at this moment I would probably break after the conversation with Howard
Jimmy wanted to work at HHM, Howard would have given him a chance, Chuck prevented it, what a tragedy.
It all comes down to the anti Land Crabs Bias of those guys.
It's funny that Chuck is the true villian of the entire Breaking Bad World
Chuck could have just said "I want you to try working as a lawyer for a bit before I hire you" but instead he immediately chose to deflect.
To think how different this universe would have been if Chuck just grew up and supported his brother. Jimmy would have been straight laced, They could have teamed up and fought extortionists like Sandpiper. Walt would never have grown in power. Chuck's pettiness caused so many problems for BCS/BB.
That and not telling him to his face right there and his reasons. Would've saved the hassle on Howard being Jimmy's enemy.
Jimmy almost made him use his Chuck blast
Should’ve gone on a Balam Industries sponsored field trip.
Chuck seems more of an Arquebus guy.
Chuck was such a liar lol
whether Chuck helps him or not, Jimmy would eventually becomes a criminal one day.
If Howard just hired him he’d still be alive
When Howard eventually apologized and offered him the job Jimmy declined though.
@@Carlos-ln8fd By that point, the bridge has been severely burnt and blown up to smithereens.
So this was in the 90s right?
Howard was basically a victim of the victim’s rage. He never had anything against Jimmy and was never his enemy truly. But Chuck pretty much used Howard as a front man/disguise to ruin Jimmy’s life cus he couldn’t see him as anything more than Slippin Jimmy.
That was where electromagnetic hypersensitivity was born
its Charlie hustle's origin story
Go Landcrabs
2:16 That's the exact moment Chuck started envision Chimps with Machine Guns running rampant.
Lol
2:54 it is his decision alone and they said no because you forced them. Because you are evil
Why are they all always ‘voice recording’ their notes?????
I really wonder what what’ve happened if they hired him
I love how Chuck is dictating into a tape recorder, when he has a perfectly functioning laptop that does the exact same thing with less effort.
This scene is set in 1998, no laptop at the time had storage that could match plain old cassette tape.
If chuck had been smarter he could have easily pulled the "i cant afford to show nepotism" card and at least put jimmy off of joining HHM a few years at a time
"Its to soon, 5 years as your own self made man, prove to everyone here who mau doubt you as having deserved this job other than just being the owners brother" sorta schtick
Instead he put it on howard to act like it was against His choice
3:55 just imagen how different the world would have been if Howard said "We voted and everyone is okay with hiring you. Only Chuck said no. He tried to convince us, I have the feeling you should talk that out with him"
He is like Livia soprano
GO LAND CRABS!
My favourite movie
cl i thought it was a cereal bar
It’s a book
The Bar is not that hard. The hardest part of becoming a lawyer is being accepted into a school.
He's still not a real lawyer, is he? Just as Chuck mentioned before or mentions later on, right?
Damn, I had forgotten how much I hate Chuck.
The ironyof this was that Jimmy would have become an damn good and ethical lawyer HHM hired him. Maybe thats really why Chuck was such a snake.
Go land crabs
Interesting
I don't think the way howard behaves here is right for his character, I think he would have showed him more sympathy, he probably wanted to hire him but chuck wouldn't allow that but during this point in the show they had to show to the audience that howard was the bad person so he was portrayed in a more unsympathetic way.
What a sick joke!!
2nd comment
Rooted for Howie’s death.
Bait
Turns out Chuck was right. And all the simps scream
I hate chuck for this
You passed the bar?
