"I Have a Story": 103-Year-Old Former Pilot's Need for Speed - Greg McQuade / WTVR (4/19/24)

In retirement most people in their golden years tend to slow down. But in his latest “I Have a Story” feature Greg McQuade introduces us to a senior from Mathews County who has never lost his desire to go fast even after reaching triple digits. 103-Year-Old Chuck Lirette knew he wanted to fly ever since he was a child. Chuck spent nearly 30 years in the military flying dozens of different types of planes. The New Orleans native trained other pilots and flew dangerous supply missions over the Himalayas during WWII. During his storied career Chuck worked with some of NASA’s first astronauts and even flew as a test pilot. His fondest moment in the air was flying the F-104 Starfighter jet which hurdled Chuck through the sky at Mach 2 or twice the speed of sound. Chuck has no plans putting the brakes on life.
