- James Arness was an American actor, best known for portraying Marshal Matt Dillon for 20 years in the CBS television series Gunsmoke. Arness has the distinction of having played the role of Dillon in five decades: 1955 to 1975 in the weekly series, then in Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge and four more made-for-television Gunsmoke films in the 1990s. In Europe, Arness reached cult status for his role as Zeb Macahan in the Western series How the West Was Won. He was the older brother of actor Peter Graves.
Early life
James Arness was born in Minneapolis. His parents were businessman Rolf Cirkler Aurness and journalist Ruth Duesler. His father's ancestry was Norwegian; his mother's was German. The family name had been Aursnes, but when Rolf's father, Peter Aursnes, emigrated from Norway in 1887, he changed it to Aurness. Arness and his family were Methodists. Arness' younger brother was actor Peter Graves. Peter used the stage name "Graves," a maternal family name.
Arness attended John Burroughs Grade School, Washburn High School, and West High School in Minneapolis. During this time, Arness worked as a courier for a jewelry wholesaler, loading and unloading railway boxcars at the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad freight yards in Minneapolis, and logging in Pierce, Idaho. Despite "being a poor student and skipping many classes," he graduated from high school in June 1942.
Military service in World War II
Although Arness wanted to be a naval fighter pilot, he was concerned his poor eyesight would bar him. However, his 6-ft, 7-in frame ended his chances because the limit for aviators was set at 6 ft, 2 in . He was drafted into the US Army and reported to Fort Snelling in March 1943. As a rifleman, he landed on Anzio Beachhead on January 22, 1944, with the 2nd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division. Arness - due to his height - was the first man to be ordered off his landing craft to determine the depth of the water; it came up to his waist. He was severely wounded in his right leg during the Battle of Anzio, and medically evacuated from Italy to the U.S., where he was sent to the 91st General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. His brother, Peter, , came to see him when he was back in the U.S., beginning his long recuperation, assuring him to not worry about his injuries, that likely he could find work in the field of radio. After undergoing several surgeries, he was honorably discharged from the Army on January 29, 1945. His wounds continued to trouble him, though, throughout the remainder of his life. In his later years, he suffered with chronic leg pain that often became acute, and was sometimes initiated when he was mounted on horses during his performances on Gunsmoke. To this day I watch reruns of Gunsmoke every single day that it is on. I loved and respected the show and all of the characters. There was no finer show. There has been no other show to rival James Arness or Gunsmoke. My father was a chef, and he would fix Milburn Stone breakfast in a restaurant in El Segundo. He would be on his way to film the star in Gunsmoke.
My husband and I watch it pretty much every day..
I watch it every night on “insp”. It stays on until 3:00am and so do I. 😄

Wow I never knew he had to dye his hair. It explains why his brother hair was light and why his was dyed for that role. To think it's still being seen by a new Generation. I remember how my father loved anything Western related. How he loved Gunsmoke watched it till he died. He was 89..I can watch those same shows. Gunsmoke is timeless. When I have grandchildren they can watch knowing their pop pop watched the same shows..love,Respect and positivity always. Vj.
Both, my father (79 y.o.) and my grandfather (1916-1962), were huge fans of Gun Smoke. I’ll soon be 55 and I’m still watching it every day!
I been a fan for ever,still today its one of my favorite times out so I can enjoy a rerun on TV 2021. ☕
I always watch this western the best ever I always said Matt and Kitty go together I could see it in their eyes intimacy. Without the intimacy. We love everyone on the show

I enjoyed Gunsmoke for many, many, many years and then some and the only part I didn't care for was why he never wanted to marry Ms. Kitty and why she wasted her life waiting on him when another man loved her and wanted to marry her and she knew Matt never would.
I want to see videos lots of live videos I know he's passed away but you know they've got them saved somewhere

The best of the best. The current quality of entertainment is in the toilet and deserves no attention. It was a joy watching James for 20 years. At 80 and I still watch the show.

The best TV Western ever was that of Gunsmoke which ran for 20 years from 1955 to 1975!
Gun smoke still is one of my favorite western series of it's time, besides gun smoke,I also like Cheyenne, follow up with bonanza, and the big valley But no one else was a great actor like Matt Dillon,,👍

The narrator needs to keep his information straight. First he tells us that James' father changed their last name when he moved to the U.S. from Norway and then later tells us that Aurness was changed to Arness when James entered movies.

I believe Arness, was also awarded honorary status of U.S. Marshal , really quite an honor .
I still record and wath the series. I find the black and whites have better story writers than the color.

I thought maybe you would touch on his little Alaska incident. I believe it was in the 50's when Jim and his brother Peter plus a actor I can't remember got busted for a small amount of pot. Personally I have no problem with it but was probably more of a big deal then. His war injuries probably explain why he used. I didn't know he was from my part of the country, he was a good man and a life well lived. RIP Sir
