- Oh hello, pardner. Another visitor to our humble abode down memory lane. You’re just in time for some thrilling tales of James Arness, just about the most important figure in Western TV there is. Well, there’s more to the story than that, like his helpful but messy friendship with John Wayne, his refusal to give his beloved ranch to his own kids, and how his service to his country impacted the rest of his life.

I had a high school teacher that had a personal anecdote about James Arness. My teacher was not a very tall man. He was in the same unit has James Arness during the war. When they were disembarking the military transport for the beaches he was standing beside James Arness. They were weighed down with lots of heavy equipment. My teacher went into the water & immediately sunk up to his neck from the load he was carrying. Arness at 6 ft 7 reached out & grabbed my teacher by the shoulders & helped him get to shore, most likely saving his life. That story always stuck with me. Another unsung hero of WWII. Thank you both for your service.
Love Gunsmoke. Still watches it at night. Watching since I was a child.
great
James Arness was truly a noble man.
I love that story. What little 8 have read and heard about James Arness that sounds exactly like something he would do. I am still in love with him and have been since I was 12. I am 64.
I do not miss Gunsmoke,
no matter how many times that I have seen it before. 😊❤
yooo😊
I LOVE James Arness. I LOVE Gunsmoke; it's my favorite show ever. I never heard a single negative thing about Mr. Arness
My Dad loved GUNSMOKE. We grew up on watching GUNSMOKE when I was a kid and he would avidly watch all the reruns through out his 81 years of life. When he passed, we were watching an episode of GunSmoke in his Hospice bed at home with me holding his hand.
A great series ❤️
Touching for sure at 79 I could “die” with that! You we’re blessed to have a Dad with what I will label “Gunsmoke” values!
Gunsmoke was one of the many shows from that time period that me and my dad watched together while he was in hospice care. We watched a lot of the lone ranger and his favorite was Bonanza.
I'm 33 now we watched a lot of those shows during his last decade on this Earth. When I was in my early 20's I hated watching these old shows.
But they grow on you and it was fun listening to my dad reminiscing about his younger day's. Because you know how watching stuff like that associated with memories he would recall things he hadn't thought of since. The best memories I have of my father.
I still watch these shows whenever there's nothing else on and I do the same thing with myself. Makes me wish I'd gotten more time with him. Drank a few more beers together and got more time in the garage.
Rip Dad "Spank". I miss you everyday.
@@diy_mushroomguy😅
I love Gunsmoke but I really enjoyed Jim in How The West Was Won.
James Arness was a very sweet, talented and generous man❤❤❤
I watched Gunsmoke every day all day long with my Dad. It didn't matter how many times we saw the episodes we just kept watching!! My Dad passed away last year at 96. And I still find myself watching Gunsmoke. It's clean good entertainment with a great cast!!
Was there a favorite episodes that you both enjoyed?
@@within360😊😅😊😊
I grew up listening to Gunsmoke....all outside play would cease when the radio show would start....in the early 50's long before we had a TV. My mother thought it was a terrible show for youngsters to be listening to, but I turned out to be relatively fine and OK and have killed ONLY 17 people! BHE
My husband and watch every episode of Gunsmoke reruns on TV. We never get tired of watching it. It was great.
I grew up watching Gunsmoke, and I still watch the reruns on TV. He was one of the good ones!
I had the good fortune of meeting James Arness at the LA County Fair. I was 7 yrs old. He was on horseback and my Dad handed me up to his saddle. (Boy that was a long way! ) Needless to say, I was beaming. Such a thoughtful man!
I'm 72 now...my papa passed over in 2008 at almost 100 yrs young. I'm not ashamed to say /or embarrassed/ to say Mr
Arness saved me. Paw and I were close..and just to hear his voice after a bad day erased all anxiety. I didn't realize the reruns of GS were being aired. I found the channel and have began a long road of healing. Thank God for Mr Arness and the show. I'm still watching and now 2 channels carry the show. Makes this old granny very happy. Papa and he would be very good friend's because they were duplicates in belief and how they lived every day
God bless them and bless those that are still being entertained and comforted by the memories.
Gunsmoke one of my favorite shows. Loved James Arness. ❤❤👍👵
Great guy, great show. Gunsmoke, Bonanza and The Waltons are the only shows on TV worth watching. They illustrate values, patriotism and family. Something this country needs desperately.
I loved the High Chaparral as well as the Rifle man, Fury and The Littlest Hobo.
Well said
You forgot the Andy Griffith show
@@debracuskelly9526 If you remember the Littlest Hobo, you are like me, OLD, lol.
@@debracuskelly9526 I'm a naturally goofy guy... I'd even throw F-Troop in there.
Grew up with Gunsmoke. One of the Great TV series.
I was born in 1966; I remember my dad watching this show, on our one and only black and white TV in the house.
Same here. I was born in 1959 but my grandfather watched Gunsmoke all the time and I grew up with it to this day!
No cable back then so didn't have much choice in shows to watch but as a kid in the seventies I had a few favorites: Gunsmoke, The Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, The Waltons, and Medical Center with Dr. Gannon. Oh boy was I ever in love with Chad Everett as Dr. Gannon as a ten- to twelve-year-old girl. Huge crush even though he was as old as my father. LOL. Still watch Gunsmoke reruns every day on two different channels. Thank God for cable and reruns.@@WilliamAlexanderVT
Excellent piece on Arness! Still watch every weekday on MEtv. He always impressed me as the real deal and whether Amanda Blake ever really understood him, the two actors created an undying love relationship that didn’t need “the kiss”, which in some ways is an adjunct story in itself. What a great voice he had, too.
Yes I agree great voice
Gunsmoke on MeTV also my daily ritual ... hate to miss it! Arness was such a natural in that role. Along with the Waltons, my favorite TV series.
I watch it every day on TVLND and am watching it right now on INSP. Daily ritual. Brings back memories of watching it growing up in the 60s and 70s. Those were the good old days when America was still America. I don't recognize this country in February of 2024.@@ltggill
I still watch reruns. I love all the characters , especially, James Arness. He always seemed so genuine---someone you would enjoy knowing, nothing like the rest of Holkywood. He was the best of what America was all about---being kind, always doing what was right, keeping your word, having a sense of humor.
I like that he kept his private life private too.
It is a shame kids today don't have someone like him to look up to in the movies.
Very very well said thermahutton and exactly right
No one can say it better!
Too bad we can't make him our President!
@@terrilehr3225 Ha Ha, I agree for sure Terri, that's the kind of guy we need in that office !
I helped out Jim and his wife Janet years ago with an issue they were having with their website. Jim was kind enough to send me a personalized, autographed photo shortly before he passed. Though I have met a number of celebrities and made friends with some of them over the years, Jim Arness (though I never got to meet him face to face) was one of the kindest, down to earth people I have ever met. These days, a LOT of so-called celebrities could learn a lesson from a first-class act like James Arness. Thanks for the memories Mr. Arness, it was a pleasure "growing up" with Gunsmoke! RIP.
So called "Celebrities" now days are awful none of them are concerned with anyone but themselves & have No clue how to be a class act. Sadly that's passed with the former generation just like defending your country, having a brain in your head, knowing right from wrong, consideration of others & many other things. Atleast we have the other generation to look to for guidance, that will never change !
You've never met him, but he's the nicest man you met, HUH?????
My friend Tory Kern’s Mom was Arness’ elderly father’s caretaker in the late 60’s and early 70’s. She said, unlike his asshat brother, Arness was as nice as they come. A real mench!
I think he,s great to we have watched every show Suzanne
LOL, that was a bit confusing to me too.@@michaelcanney7218
I’m watching it right now and still can’t get enough. I know most episodes by word. My wife watches them as much or more than I do. I never thought I’d meet a woman who likes westerns as much as me. Great job
I love Gunsmoke and all it's actors/ actresses! I am 65 years old now & don't remember a time when it wasn't available to me! James Arnez was an amazing actor. Long live Gunsmoke! ❤️❤️❤️
Me too and I love Gunsmoke 😊
I loved all of the actors and actress.
I have seen Gunsmoke so many times I have almost memorized it. I met Ken Curtis (festus), Jim Davis, Lee Majors, Claude Atkin, Robert Wilkes, and a lot of cowboy actors. All were nice guys. And anybody that was anybody played a role on Gunsmoke. Even Harrison Ford and Jon Voiht (sic)....wish I could have met Arness.
I was so lucky to speak with James Arnes the year before his death. He was so nice to me! I will never forget that conversation! He sent me an autograph biography. I still watch Gunsmoke daily.
That's a great memory
Wow, how lucky for you ! That must have been quite an experience ! I grew up watching Gunsmoke and still watch it daily, just great TV and a great guy (even though fictional television) to model fine character traits after.
Love that show. About to be 79. Still watching. Remember it on radio.
LONG LIVE GUNSMOKE, THOSE ACTORS IN GUNSMOKE WERE A CLASS ACT I LOVE THEM ALL, R.I.P. MR JAMES ARNESS ,KITTY, FESTUS, DOC ,CHESTER, YOU WERE ALL A CLASS ACT GOD BLESS YOUR SOULS. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

My husband and I are in our late 70’s. We enjoy watching Every Episode of Gun smoke, each day! It reminds us of happy times, watching with our parents and grandparents, and the lessons apply to today’s values! Thanks So Much For This Post!!❤🎉🙏🏼👍
I loved Gunsmoke as a kid and still watch it all the time.
Watched in the 50's as a young child - watching the reruns now as a 70 year old man. What a show!
I also grew up with Gunsmoke. My mother and I watched every time it come on. It was a good clean show and I’ll always remember it.
I loved Gunsmoke as a kid and still do. The combination of characters was brillant and ran the gambit from serious to comic. Stars from other shows often appred on the series which I'm sure boosted their popularity. I miss those times. When t.v. was great entertainment and without fear of leaving your kids alone to watch it...📺...🐎...🥰
I appreciate all the fond memories of James Arness in Gunsmoke. He came off as a decent human being. I like that I never heard any profanity in that series. You cannot find any TV series nowadays that don't have profanity. I believe James Arness will go down in history as a fine human being.
I'm 72 and I'm sorry but we live in a lot different times. Red Skeleton , Carol Burnett and others had wonderful shows that never cussed and they all had very good shows.
I'm sure westerners never cussed
@@jtooley6554 not when I was growing up
Try Laramie. It’s another good moral with no language! And the 2 staring roles are easy to look at. Lol.
It's because of the scripts , not the actors
My older brother got me started on the show. I was young enough that I don’t remember episode names but Arness left his mark on me by his serious demeanor and his consistent sense of fairness and keeping to the moral high ground that he always seemed to reflect
. Miss Kitty, doc Milburn, and Festus always felt like real people, and Matt was always the moral high ground in all situations.
I love the honesty Matt had.
You don't see that much in real life, that's for sure.
Love James Arness & gun smoke, we still watch it today & good old Festas too!!!!❤💙💜😀😃😄😁😊🤘👍👍
I loved Gunsmoke. James Arness showed us the discontent of a man who upheld the law but was torn apart by injustices of some of those laws. Loved how he dealt with these delemmas. I always thought he was like that in real life.
I grew up in the 50s and 60s, and Gunsmoke and other westerns were the popular shows to watch.❤❤❤❤
Growing up in the 50's and 60's with the last name Dillon made life interesting. BTW, Arnes' other famous brother is Peter Graves of Mission Impossible fame and many movies.
It is, I had no idea! That's wild. Ever see a grown man naked? 🤣

I loved Gunsmoke as a child & now at 62 I love it even more. They don't make them like MATT DILLON anymore. What a MAN❤
Watched with my mom when I was young and I still watch reruns today! I live the way the characters interact, and the funny like hillbillies !
Gunsmoke is the greatest TV series ever produced. My mother and I watch it every day. "Matt Dillon Must Die" is perhaps my favorite episode. I also love "Chato", which is the episode James has said was his personal favorite. James and Ricardo together was priceless.
I still watch gunsmoke i watch it when I was a little girl we only have a black and white tv I'm 72and i still watch gunsmoke i really appreciate James arness it is just something about him rest in peace amen 👼🏾❤️🙏🏽
All of the Gunsmoke programs are and always will be fantastic and top notch James was and is the best and I still watch him all the time and I am 65 years old watching home from childhood years !
Always my favorite TV Western.
Great stories with excellent actors.
James appearance in "How the West Was Won" would make a great program for you. This one was great. JMS
My father was a great fan of Gunsmoke. I can still remember when my sister started college and would come home on the bus on Friday afternoon only to have the family drive her back to St. Louis on Sunday. I was about 7 or 8 then and I HATED it because ot meant that I had to stay in my Sunday clothes. We would leave for St. Louis about three in the afternoon and have supper in St. Louis at a restaurant , then do some shopping at Walgreens since drugstores were the only places that could be open on Sunday in Missouri. Dad would stock up with liquor at Christmas time or beer in the summer.and then we would drop my sister off at Fontbonne College. But now it was a race to get home before Gunsmoke came on. Luckily for Dad, the radio station KMOX played the radio version of Gunsmoke with William Conrad as the voice of Matt Dillon. But we always has to be home by eight for the TV version. I can still remember the line up on Sunday. It was Gunsmoke..Have Gun, Will Travel, Candid Camera, and What's My Line followed by the news.
Dad, being a country doctor himself, loved Milburn Stone and his dry wit and when Ken Curtis entered the scene as Festus Hagan, my Dad would get a kick from the repatee between those two characters. He really loved that show and would watch reruns all of his life.
I always watched Gunsmoke on tv when I was kid. Very good memories I missed him ❤
.
My dad loved this show. My parents named my little brother after Matt Dillion
I enjoyed the B&W episodes the most. Dennis Weaver with that hitch in his get along was one of my favorite characters. It's still hard for me to believe that James and Peter Graves were brothers and they never acted together.
I always thought Chester had stupid lines and he was like a dog following his master around. I don't think he got much respect with his role.
We love Gunsmoke! Black&whites are our favorites! Watch it everyday
I like Matt Dillon, a no nonsense lawman who dealt with the bad guys the way they should be dealt with. And that was that. My favorite line from Marshall Dillon--“Alright mister get out of town.”
It is get out of Dodge not town
My Dad loved Western themed movies and TV Shows and so did, do, I. Gunsmoke was one of our favorites.
Mt wife & I WATCH MeTV everyday with two episodes of Gunsmoke and LOVE IT Over & Over!
It is also on INSP every day with one in the morning and two at night. Also on TVLAND daily for four hours straight in the afternoon.! I got myself covered all day with Gunsmoke reruns during retirement. They cover the entire 20 years the show was on.
Never met James, but I do remember meeting Ken Curtis as a kid and thought that was so cool. He was walking through a parking lot going toward a building, and I was coming out. He knew I recognized him right away and paused for a minute to talk to a young fan of the show.
I remember a solitary episode where Marshall Dillion visits his mothers grave. Thinking when your gone you only have memories.
I thought Matt Dillion grew up as an orphan. One show was about his foster brother coming to Dodge to meet Dillion many years after they had grown up.
The best episode to me was when Matt got shot and Festus and Kitty thought he was dead but Doc knew he wasn't. Another one was when Doc got snake bit, and Festus saved him. Also when Festus got shot, and Doc was touched when Festus pulled through.
I liked when Chester saved Doc after being shot, and had to kill Doc's horse for nourishment
Did you like the episode when the young girl fell in love with Dr Adams ? Very touching. I loved Ken Curtis as well.❤
Really. Ugh. Are u sure? I follow it but didnt see that.
Stay in the buggie doc you stay in that buggie. Festus telling doc when he was snake bit, that was a great episode.
My fave was when Dirty Sally saved a gunman from dying of his wound. Two episodes in a row of it.
My all time favorite show.Never miss it.Great.
Looked forward to watching the show every week growing up in the 60s and 70s and now watch repeats daily on two different channels. My all-time fave show. Loved James Arness. .
James Arness was great in Gunsmoke. Every Saturday night my family was watching this great western. I also enjoyed watching James Arness in the How The West Was Won TV series.
I love gunsmoke, at 70 I still watch. There's something about the show that's in my blood. Can't explain it just is. No other show drawed me in like Gunsmoke.
James Arness also played the monster in the original “The Thing” in the 50’s
The episode where Festus Hagans’ cousin tried to shoot the “ hangy down” part of his ear off!! My favorite!
I just loved the episodes that co-starred Chill Wills. My favorite of those was The Hat, and a Noose For Dobie. Wills brought out the absolute best in the Matt Dillon character with his quick dry wit.
James Aeneas was a great actor he will be missed
What a lovely trip down memory lane ... I have such fond memories of just about everyone mentioned in this video. However, James Arness was a giant in television and such a huge part of my youth. To see he really was a gentle giant both on screen and off was a real pleasure to experience.
Cheers to you for the wonderful look at a great celebrity and man.
Thanks for his story.
I grew up on Gunsmoke. I still watch it every day. James Arness was one of a kind. And I liked all the charters on the show. I like the black and white episodes better than he color.
See if you can find the original movie, “The Thing”… Black and white…and…JAMES ARNESS played the role of “The Thing”… My little brother, Doug and I, saw this movie at a drive-in, with our parents…in the 1950’s!!
You all probably, already knew that James Arness and Peter Graves are/were brothers… I still enjoy their acting on my collection of DVD’s!! ❤️🎬📽📺
speaking of Peter Graves, he had a great role (as a villain) in the movie “Stalag 17” about life in a NAZI prison camp! I believe William Holden won an Oscar for his role but Peter Graves was great as a snitch! Character actors like Harvey Lembeck and Peter Strauss were great in it! Sorry I got off the James Arness but one thought provokes others (especially at my age)!
How The West was Won----excellent series that I would highly recommend---just watched all 3 seasons and really enjoyed it. It was on par with Centennial and gave James Arness a great role.
James Arness did not age well in the looks department. He was so handsome in his younger years. I guess none of us stay good looking forever.
Great stuff! I loved how Gunsmoke had a strong moral theme. Matt closes one show with "Walk humbly with thy God". I bought the whole series on Amazon for a great price! My two favorites were "Matt's Love Story" and "Nitro". But you can really tell the fairness that Matt had because I'm not sure of the episode, but he actually let somebody get by with the crime because he understood the things they went through in their life. It was a lady who had her back against the wall because of her unfair circumstances. James was perfect for filling in for a man with some crazy conflicts! Superb writing and a great show!
@CommonSenseTricks AndTricks...Possibly the episode that was on MeTV here in New Hampshite last weekend. The husband took all the money they had and went off drinking with a friend down to the river. The husband returned to Dodge , but in the meantime somebody shot at Kitty in her room . The husband was allowed to see his wife in jail . She stuck him in the heart with a hat pin and killed him. She told Matt that her husband said he was going to kill her. Without a witness Matt let her go free and gave her the stage fare so she could go to St. LOUIS to live with her sister .All because he believed that she had been abused her whole life . He beat her after eleven of her 13 children died in child birth , blaming her .
@@lar7905 Yes that was it! Matt did not know her intentions but he was aware that could happen so he went with it and did not condemn the lady.
Best western ever imo! Up until a couple of weeks ago, I watched Gunsmoke & a few others every night but the station (INSP) is not on locally anymore.
@@CommonSenseTipsAndTricksp.
In the episode Gone Straight, Matt believed the character that Carl Betz played had reformed, so he made it appear that Betz had been killed so he could start a new life.
I became addicted to Gunsmoke when it was on radio with Joseph Conrad as Matt and Parley Baer as Chester. Gunsmoke is one of my few favorite programs ever.

You're right @@bethalligood2879. My old brain plays tricks on me now and then.
Gunsmoke has always been my favorite western. James Arness was the perfect man to play Marshal Dillon. Everyone in the cast were excellent. Festus got a little too cartoon like, but he was still an integral part of the show. The dialog was alway great. I never get tired of watching Gunsmoke.
I loved Gunsmoke and still watch I even have my sister who is 70 yrs old watching it she wouldn't miss an episode, the whole cast was great on Gunsmoke from James arness to doc Adam's, I like I said before I love me some Gunsmoke I watch it everyday on me-tv and grit TV, to all the cast who are no longer with us may they all RIP amen, bring back all those great shows of the 1950's and 1960's the westerns they were absolutely great. ❤❤❤

His voice was as beautiful as he was. Even though ive seen every episode dozens of times i have to watch every now and then because i miss all the wonderful cast on this show and i just need to see them and hear their voices
My dad was a huge fan and so was I until my teenage years. I'd have to say that I enjoyed his character in how the west was won more than gunsmoke.
God bless James Arness, John Wayne , they were my heroes when i was growing up, we could use their inspiration today
Gunsmoke is the best Tv series ever made, I've watched every episode many times, I still do now at 67 years of age, they don't makem like that anymore.
I like all the episodes and still watch them almost every day.
Matt was my favorite Western Character. I grew up watching all the Western TV shows, but none compared to Gunsmoke. Matt, Miss Kitty, Doc, and Festus were like family to me. It taught me right from wrong on every episode. I just wish we still had the same kind of justice system as they did, where criminals were not coddled and met justice for their dirty deeds with a rope or a Colt .45 revolver.
My Dad at 80 years old still watches Gunsmoke every day! He knows every episode! That and Jeopardy and wheel of fortune!
He was a class act and my very first crush. I have a dog named Gunsmoke.

Every evening, for years and years, without failure, I am absolutely consumed with Gunsmoke, and I've obviously watched reruns over and over...like it's part of my 'being'.
I'm hooked, and always will be! 🤠👢
loved him and the show. Never missed an episode.
I met James Arness in 1958. I was 7 and on vacation from Iowa. My Grandma arranged for us to visit a live set of the Gunsmoke show titled “The Cast”. We got his autograph and our picture taken with him. I watch Gunsmoke almost daily. I’m 73 now.
Gunsmoke (the TV version) premiered the year after I was born, so I literally grew up watching it. What a hoot it is to see the reruns and how many known stars started honing their craft on this show.
best TV western ever.......still watch it today
Dennnis Weaver was not crippled but had to pretend he was. James Arness was crippled but had to pretend he wasn't.
I remember watching Gunsmoke Saturday nights with my grandparents when I was growing up. The music in the beginning of the movie started my sister and I running to the tv.
We loved James Arnaz and good ole Doc Adams. Now my husband and I watch an episode almost every night. It is comforting to watch and we can both quote many of the characters throughout the show.
It will always remain in our hearts as a great memory growing up.
My feelings and memories too.
I'm in my early seventies and Gunsmoke is my most favorite western , I just can't get enough of Gunsmoke!
I'm grew up watching Gun Smoke. It was a wholesome and great show. His philanthropy work and service to this country, was not known to me, nor should it have been. But to know his humanity ran as deep as it did is nice to know. The cast was great and they genuinely seemed to get along well. Really appreciated this presentation.
We all grew up on Gunsmoke. There was only 3 channels lol. I miss those days though. Simpler times. We made due with what we had happily. There will never be any shows that are able to make it 20 years or even close. Streaming has changed the viability of sitcoms or shows forever sadly.
As a kid of 6-9 I waited till Gunsmoke started,of the first 10 yrs.,&then faced the tv as if I were drawing my gun like Jim Arness...sort of a crazy ritual.
Inspite of his foibles,we all have,I guess we expect actors to even be more perfect than ourselves.
God knows we cant either.
Thanks,really loved that show.
