Ha I attempted to cold bend a 3/4" allen wrench in a coupon bender thinking I would use it as a shackle. Not good idea. Hard, very strong steel it is. After a bit of deformation it broke and both halves left the bender with a hella lot of velocity. I wasn't in the path of either luckily. This was years ago and I still haven't lost any appendages and do have healthy respect for the forces involved in experiments such as this.

Actually I'm majoring in material's engineering and the square is strongest because it has the biggest area in touch with the pressure point (the press). That makes it distribute pressure better then the other shapes and the parallel sides makes it harder to have shear distribution (shear is what happened to the cilinder, the atoms basically slide on each other on pressure)

I’m a Lab Tech in a ready mix cement company; and part of my daily routine is crushing cylindrical cement samples.
After crushing tons of it, calculating their compressive strength (psi); I figured that the only samples that surpassed their standard design strength are those that were cured after packing every last particle that the cement mix have in its mold. No air pockets, no spaces between particles. Tightly packed.
6*12inch cylindrical samples have an average weight of 13.75kg. 4*8inch, 3.5kg.
Samples that weighed more had a greater compressive strength.
The point of this experiment and my comment is that if you test a sample in a compressor of this design, the only samples that will pass the desired design strength are those with no spaces between each parts/particles/whatever material you’re using.
Learning how a certain shape take a certain amount of force from a certain angle. There is no single shape that is “the hardest” in nature.
A certain shape’s true strength is shown only in very specific conditions.
In this video and with this type of compressor, only the cube and the cylinder showed promise.

You know why it's Cube and Cylinder?
Look where is the force is coming from.
Now Look at the top view of cube and Cylinder.
      They're equal.
      It's all about engineering.

    • @user-ov2kx8ql5i
      @user-ov2kx8ql5i 3 роки тому +5

      It's not about the mix.
The cube is the strongest shape. Why? Because it's equal on every sides.
Hit it on the side, it's the same shit.
Hit it from below, it's the same shit.
Hit it from above, it's the same shit.
It has four corners that supports itself.
      There is your answer.
A cylinder isn't that strong when you press it on it's side.
      Cube is the winner.

Square-based pyramids are ok, but a perfect equilateral tetrahedron is the best demonstration of the structural strength of triangles.

    • @Postghost
      @Postghost 4 роки тому +41

IDK for sure but I'm assuming the structural strength of the triangle frame is based on the inward force applied to it on a vertex, not on the unilateral outward force being applied to the bases of the polygons in this particular setup(obviously doesn't really represent here due to the amorphous structure of the printed plastic layers which crush and split too easily but assuming an actual crystalline structure).
In this case, the sides are what is having the inward force applied but the base is consequently receiving the outward force, so, with a triangle-based pyramid you have 3 sides offering resistance as opposed to the square-based which has 4 sides, meaning an extra whole side to offer the resistance.
I'm no structural expert but wouldn't that mean that a crystalline square pyramid shell should have roughly 25% MORE integrity than a crystalline tetrahedron shell, in the context of such a downward linear force applied to the whole 3d shape?
But again, assuming the amorphous printed plastic I'd bet your tetrahedron printed shape would probably be quite on par with the pyramid in this specific arrangement.

This kind of test a bit different to structural shapes because it's not hollow and the forces acting on the edges are minimal. All that really matters in this test is surface area to spread the load which is why the cube did so well. The pointy parts of a pyramid are essentially a weak point in this test because they have little surface area.

The speed of the press is really important when dealing with polymers, the slower you apply pressure to a polymer, the more it behaves like a liquid (viscous behavior). If you apply pressure at a faster rate, it should behave in more of an elastic matter. This property is called viscoelasticity and is most noticeable on polymers.

If anyone wants some technical terms,
Stress is the force applied divided by the area of contact, here it is in terms of kilograms. I'm guessing the press simulates a weight so you can convert to Newtons ny multiplyong by g, but idk.
Strain is the degree the specimen deformed from its original shape, for example final length over initial length.
The strength of a material is how much energy per volume it can take before failing.
Materials are tested by subjecting it to crushing or tensile forces until it fails.

As an aerospace engineering student, I can confirm that this lined up exactly with stress theory. Stress is the amount of force per unit area on a given solid element, and it is what causes structural failure. Thus the greater cross sectional area, the lower the stress, and therefore better performance under load. I’ve seen some comments that believe the triangle should perform best. While triangles are very strong shapes is certain applications, a solid triangular shape will have extremely high stress concentrations on the tip, as cross sectional area is nearly zero. This is why it performs poorly in this test. Very good video to demonstrate the concepts of stress, and failure theory!
