"The humble bumble has an engineering problem to solve. She makes two things - honey and wax. The former to eat and the latter to contain the former." There's poetry in this.
Bees don’t actually make the wax in hexagons in the first place, it just melts into that shape because that’s how maths works, you can do this with bubbles as he said in the video, if you blow several bubbles around each other they form roughly 120 degree angles, forming hexagons
Enter the bad opinion zone: Catan is boring, overrated, and absolute garbage, and the endless expansions for it are completely meaningless... Hexagons are superior its true, but they can't save Catan... >_>

I build houses. So when he says "Hexagons provide maximum area for minimum wall" I feel like thats important. Maybe if I build a house for myself Ill make it a hexagon instead of a square.
I think that the honor should go to the triangle for the long game. Somehow the triangle has been integrated so much into our math systems, that for how much we rave about hexagons, we know more about triangles.
bees actually make circles, but they automatically turn into hexagons to make them stronger. Hexagons are the Bestagons, but cirkles is the path to Bestagons. Like bubbles, just as you said
Actually there are some apps that actively use hexagons For example, I use Typewise keyboard, which has hexagon keys instead of regular qwerty - and it's really cool!
Bees actually do arrange their honeycomb into circles. The heat produced by their movement heats the honeycomb and softens it. It then hardens in the most energetically-favourable position - the hexagon.
I've been enjoying these for a while, but my 6yo daughter recently discovered this video and is repeatedly telling the whole family "hexagons are the bestagons". I hope Grey is aware of Boards of Canada. the scottish electronic music duo obsessed completely with hexagons. From their song “Turquoise Hexagon Sun” to their label simply named Hexagon Sun.
It is the 6th element because it has 6 protons. That allows for 4 electrons in the 2nd orbital, which allows stable bonds without too many ions, thus hexagonal shapes in their more stable forms.
@@NPCrash nope man strongest bond that carbon makes are tetrahedral.....carbon nanotubes and diamond....hexagonal symmetry is weak on third dimension...
In the UK (where Grey lives) it is quite common to see electoral maps made out of hexagons where regions are scaled by their voting power, not by land area.
yeah, and if you take a circles diameter, you can mark 6 marks around that circle, then connect those points, and you get a hexagon. Im not sure, but im pretty sure its also the same length as a circle, just more compact, that could be wrong though.
@@rosibalisong4403 Maybe I’m misunderstanding what you mean, but you can do that with any polygonal shape… if you evenly space four marks around the outside of a circle and connect them, for example, you have a square, and the diagonal length of that square is the diameter of the circle. You can make three marks anywhere on the perimeter of the circle and draw a triangle, and you can use that triangle to recreate the circle. Etc.
Came here to say this. Biology doesn't prefer hexagons, energy optimization does. It's all physics. (If you look at a picture of a bee hive cut open you'll see there's an occasional 5 or 7+ sided polygon)
_Hexagons are the bestagons..._ Wait, what was I saying? Guess I'm still partially in the grasp of the hexagons... But anyways, if you'd be brave enough to plan on getting out, you should consider that squares are easier to mathematically organize and calculate overall, not to mention that hexagons are the definition of inefficient when attempting to convert into and using as a 3d polygon, as opposed to cubes. But the members of the hexagon order are probably going to see this and do unthinkable things to me for telling you this. I've already said too much...
@@foxelfire Pfah squares are infinitely divisible and the repitition of the pattern is exactly it's weakness. The lines are the source of strength but the square pattern aligns the weakest lines alternating with the strongest lines. The square pattern also propagate forces along the lines, never dampening the forces until the squares bend enough to cease to be squares, unlike the hexagon that divides the forces in two again and again.
"And a little bit of ice nine. Don't touch that." AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!! Dying now. I'm re reading Cat's Cradle now. I laughed way too hard at that. I'm a nerd. Well done.
Fun thing to nitpick on, since it doesn't so much denounce the claim as reframe it, bees actually DO make their honeycombs as circles to start with. The raw wax forming in circular patterns as the bees work. It's just that, as the force of gravity acts on this half-shifted grid of circles while it hardens, the combs naturally coalesce into the most structurally stable, least chaotic tiling shape they can. Which, surprise surprise for all the reasons listed, happens to be hexagons! Bees may not be following the true path, but that's fine. Because *physics itself* steps in to subtly correct them. Double fun fact, hexagons being the most energetically stable state correlates to why basalt breaks in hexagons. As the structural stress the rocks are under while cooling seeks the most energy-releasing shape to break into by virtue of thermodynamic laws. And, thus, because they have the most surface area upon which to break into repeating patterns, these columns thus break into hexagons. Neat, right?
I only just started the video and had a quick peek at the comments to see if he somehow missed that huge detail... I was hoping that was part of the video. This is the worst oversight CGP has ever done as far as I'm aware. Makes this all deeply cringey.
So bees actually make their combs in circles but as they dry the “warp” into hexagons because of the stability of the shape. Literally physics knows that hexagons are the bestagons.
"Two possible explanations exist as to why honeycomb is composed of hexagons, rather than any other shape. First, the hexagonal tiling creates a partition with equal-sized cells, while minimizing the total perimeter of the cells. Known in geometry as the honeycomb conjecture, this was given by Jan Brożek and proved much later by Thomas Hales. Thus, a hexagonal structure uses the least material to create a lattice of cells within a given volume. A second reason, given by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson, is that the shape simply results from the process of individual bees putting cells together: somewhat analogous to the boundary shapes created in a field of soap bubbles. In support of this, he notes that queen cells, which are constructed singly, are irregular and lumpy with no apparent attempt at efficiency." (Wikipedia) I guess yours is more like the second of these explanations, and Grey's the first. But it's interesting that Grey later talks about the hexagonal way bubbles squash together, even though he doesn't suggest this is also what happens to bees' cells.
Well, they could have a 12-sided Space Force-operated Dodecahedral-design space station that will also have the internal volume of the structure to work with. Should actually be pretty structurally sound, methinks. They can call it: The Dodecahedron.

i love the attention to detail on the chess board. The realistic opening, the check with the bishop that was then blocked by the knight along with a early queen trade. this is already amazinf
Yeah, it is, but the chessboard is rotated by 90 degree, that's strange. In that orientation, queen never can be on her color at the start in the right order.
@@csongorkiss630 it is solely because the chessboard was using the terrible, hideous and deceitful square tiles that corrupt the laws of piece movement in chess, had the tiles been hexagons which are inarguably the bestagons, everything would've made perfect sense.
amazing. i love to play chess but i only even learn from my own games i don't practice or learn about it any other time. but i can tell your a vivid chess lover. its a pleasure to see this
I loved the shape "hexagon" about a year after I learnt the shape. And there's a community about it, making memes too. There is Hexagon (the bestagon), octogan, pentagon and patient-gon (flatline).
I was a developer on Blood Bowl. As we updated the game I was thinking about how to redesign the board from squares to hexagons and I found a very interesting thing; There's grain in hexagon patterns. When translating a game to hexagon from squares, you have to choose to retain either the North-South movement or the East-West movement... and the same for alignments. For example, you can allow players a straight path from endzone to endzone as makes aesthetic sense, but you sacrifice alignment for the Line of Scrimmage. The reverse happens if you rotate the board. While Hexagons are great, it's not as easy to aesthetically implement them in games as suggested.
A great point! I wondrer if you could layer a North-South grain on an East-West and have the player move in a sort of bubble that comprises both grids. If the player moves north his location is recorded and approximated relative to the north grid and if the players moves west his position is relative to the East-West grid. He could be able to interact with and be interacted with a circle of six hexes on both grids. Hmm. This might be viable for a small map. As for largers ones the two grids might shift out too much, but then again hexes have the same sides, so maybe it is not too much of a problem...? I dunno I might try and see what happens.
I had a weird idea that I'm pretty sure CPYGrey would hate. (I sort of hate it, being a devotee of hexagons myself). Use the Octogon and little squares grid, but warp you mind to not count the little squares as space traveled. You get N, E, S, W, with NE, SE, etc. All directions, just weird and abstract. But as Grey points out, we already do this with the grid of squares. Treating longer diagonals as 'the same distance' so it shouldn't be too hard.
I thought he would show the jump between Civilization 4 and 5 where they finally switched to hexagons. That one has been bugging me for years and I was so glad when the developers finally switched it.

2:43 Fun fact: Bees actually use circles, however when the wax is still soft, nature forms them into hexagons.
so nature literally forces circles out of the way in order to make room for the bestagons
yeah, and if you take a circles diameter, you can mark 6 marks around that circle, then connect those points, and you get a hexagon.
Etc.

@@orange158 so yeah, don't touch it or you would instantly freeze as a human being. :-)
The real ice 9 isn't as cool as the fictional one.
Hence the Giant's Causeway.

So bees actually make their combs in circles but as they dry the “warp” into hexagons because of the stability of the shape. Literally physics knows that hexagons are the bestagons.
This... Glad to find the comment!
In support of this, he notes that queen cells, which are constructed singly, are irregular and lumpy with no apparent attempt at efficiency." (Wikipedia)
I guess yours is more like the second of these explanations, and Grey's the first. But it's interesting that Grey later talks about the hexagonal way bubbles squash together, even though he doesn't suggest this is also what happens to bees' cells.

Yeah, was having a similar thought when he showed the chess board. How would a rook move?
I'd sacrifice straight movement in one direction to gain in two. I don't know anything about making games though
Cool!
