My Grandmother used to mistake me for my Mom all the time. As a nurse who takes care of patients with dementia, we don't "reality orient" them. We live in their reality, they don't live in ours.
Before my granny was put in an assisted living facility, she always thought I was my aunt. I wouldn't correct her. When she did realize it was me, she thought I was still a teenager asking me when I was getting married and going to give her great grandchildren. I was already married with a teenager and an adult child.
@@NoxVexthat would be incredibly cruel. They dont remember. Poor Meredith...of course she would help because she had to go through this alone with her mom...you can see it in her eyes...damn, I never thought we would revisit the entire reason why Meredith moved to Seattle, something that happened way back when the show first started.

Even though someone with dementia loses a loved one years ago if you tell them that the loved one that they’re looking for died it will really make the situation worse so what that Dr did was awesome the best thing to do is to have the person walk with you if they can walk if not you can do an activity with them or find out what they did for a living and talk about that that is you de- escalate the situation
Dementia is scary thing.. my grandmother sometimes remember things that no one should remember but sometimes she didn't remember anything. The worst I've seen she didn't remember her daughter and grandchild that has been taking care of her and she asked for her son who never care about her in the slightest.. she said one day to ask "can you send me to _____, he is my son.. I want to go at his house, I want to live there" but that son never want to take care of her. When she passed away, the said son dance on top of her grave while burying their mother. Everyone left speechless.
@NancyGonzalez-yo7tz and Now, my husband told me he is sure that when he is old he will get dementia... rn I'm just gonna live in the moments and savouring every second with him.
I'm sorry 😔😢🫂 That has to have been terrible to go through. I wish your family the best.... except her son he doesn't seem nice. All the best. Good luck.
@nasyawsp what? I'm sorry but I laughed at that for a second.. dementia is just a common mental disease. Not everyone will have but mostly it happened to old people. Even young people can have too sometimes.. there's also selective amnesia where they can remember something but forget some..
My mom was diagnosed with dementia. I’m the youngest of 10 and during the last 2 years of her life, she was able to call my sister‘s name but she would call me sister. I took that so personally and it made me so sad. In my head, I understood that we had to live in her reality but my heart aches. She’s been gone for seven years and my heart still aches. My dad lasted 11 months before he passed and my heart continues to ache. Today is December 20, 2024 and it’s my birthday. My mom‘s birthday is tomorrow. I still ache.
Happy birthday ❤ I understand your ache. My mom had dementia and I miss her soo. My dad passed a year and a half before she did. And to remind her of it, was extremely heartbreaking. They was together for 40 years. With time missing them will get a little better, knowing one day we will see them again. 🕊️
Not just remember her lines, but deliver them with so much emotion and conviction that as an audience we truly feel that we are watching real life. Ms Gibbs gives a master class in acting in this scene.
My grandfather had Alzheimer’s and two years after he passed away. My grandmother had dementia. Seeing the two of them suffer broke my heart. Marla Gibbs is fantastic in this
My grandma has dementia and so she doesn’t remember me one bit I was sad but I heard she used to non-stop talk about me I felt so happy that I got to know that at least she loved me I wish she did remember me tho but I glad to still have her alive..
I have the beginnings of Alzheimers and it breaks my heart 😢 I'm in treatment right now and have started a GOFUNDME page. This episode makes me cry knowing this may be my future.
This is a display of a horrible illness that I wonder what moments in my life I am going to be left with if I ever get old and develop this condition. I hope not but people don't realise that there are moments in our lives that live in a part of us we cannot control and don't get to choose if an illness like this happens to us. I bet that day all those years ago was very impactful. Both the expected joy before she knew her daughter hadn't made it and the greif afterwards. If she ever healed from her grief in the years between then and now it's likely got no relevance to her memory in these moments. I really feel for her and her granddaughter. It's just as dreadful to watch a love one forget. It hurts in ways I never thought existed.
There was a commercial on tv once about alzheimers. It ended with the words " its a long goodbye". I experienced this "long goodbye" with my mother. Until you experience it with a loved one words alone cannot convey the true depth of what it is like.
That was the perfect example of how you handle someone with dementia. When they are confused like she was you play along with them. You never tell them what they're thinking is not true. Eventually, they will calm down and become lucid.
As someone who’s both grandparents aren’t mentally aware, I’ve learned to just play along with what they believe, according to my grandma, her parents are still alive, and my mom is her sister.
My grandmother has dementia her sister died like 5 months ago and untill know she kept getting surprised like she died yesterday, she also says that the mother of her sister died also!(Yes she call her that) Dementia Is a very scary thing
I was 8 when I discovered my grandmother had alzheimer's and had no clue who I was when I tried to hug her on the couch surrounded by family. I ran out the door heartbroken!
One thing that stressed me out is how doesnt this woman not have a caretaker? Why isnt she in a home? Her dementia is obviously about to be mid stage (based on how confused she was) so why doesnt she have anyone to redirect her? The grand daughter also looks like a doctor? How doesnt she know shes not suppose to tell dementia patients the truth unless neccesary? Ive never seen this show just a couple clips from this episode and each time its more frustrating.

My moms aunt, had dementia.. So the one memory I had was when my mom went to see her aunt in the hospital and I was a baby, and when we got there, she thought all of the parents kids, were them,so when my mom said hi my aunt said "who are you?" And she looked at me and went "hi *****" she didn't know my grandpa and for 12 years, she was on bed rest and in her 90's like 3 weeks ago. She passed and it was so sad that day,for everyone.
My neighbor had their mother live with them and she had dementia and she often would be at our front door trying to get in cause she thought it was her house 😅 very cute older lady and my mom would always be so kind to her just like the doctor in this scene anyways we found out she was actually a professor had a few degrees and lived a really good life so it was sad but her stories were amazing and we were glad to host her in our home RIP to her 😊
Alzheimer's is such a degrading disease. My Abuela (grandma) suffered from it. Whenever we went to see her she would ask for my Abuelo (grandpa), and my mom remind her that he passed away. My Abuela would morn as if it was the day he died. Finally, I had to tell my mom to stop doing that. I told her to just say he was at the store. Yes, it was lying, but it kept her from going through the heartbreak over and over.
You should never tell an alzheimer patient about the death of beloved ones they no longer remember. My aunt had it and for years before dying she was here and there asking for a dead sister, thinking she was just out at a party, or saw a sister of mine and thought it was her. We had to disconect her phone and hide the keys of her house.

And she said yes, and if they were her belongings then she is home or else they wouldn't be here. I basically watched her brain trying to reboot because it knew I was right. I told her we would call her brother in law my uncle in the morning, but she needed to sleep. She stayed up for a few hours until she fell asleep and was fine the next morning.Sadly she would be gone not long after that.

From nurse to nurse I completely agree. We play along to keep them calm and from getting upset and potentially combative.
