I don't see how these two actually thought they were convincing when they said they didn't have feelings for each other. It's written all over their faces and everyone can see it. Plus, the bickering and banter, the pranks. I'm surprised no one called them out on it.
I've not actually watched The Rookie properly, but really invested in their relationship from all these fan edits. What was Tim lying about towards the end? Where he didn't want Lucy to get drawn into it and ultimately led to their breakup?
Tim was ex military and hid his past military life from Lucy because some things happened, if I’m not mistaken I think some sort of conspiracy murders. Long story short an ex military soldier of Tim’s came to town to get the guy who basically blows up Tim’s whole ex military team down. And he ends up going off books and if Lucy found out it would have jeopardize not only Tim’s job but Lucy’s too.
When Tim was in the military, a solider under his command was doing illegal things while they were deployed. So Tim gathered his unit to catch the solider as he thought they could handle it themselves and he would get promoted to a higher rank, but that solider called an air strike to their location. Tim and another solider loved with little injuries because the two soldiers in front of them had taken the entire blow. It was a brutal scene and since body parts were everywhere, Tim thought the solider was also KIA and so wrote his death report so that the solider’s wife would get military benefits. Then years later when Tim is a cop, that solider appears alive and doing more illegal stuff. Tim’s moral wouldn’t let himself just get rid of Ray, so he wanted to catch Ray doing whatever illegal thing he was in the US for and arrest him. Tim couldn’t live with lying to 2 men he highly respected to keep his job, so he broke up with Lucy because he thought she deserved better.

I think the writers are going to just string the fans along because if they got back together it would shorten the story line. The tension between them is what makes their story line interesting.
