I believe its the main reason he finds work and gets rich. To afford his wives Dowary. In Islam it's the husband who pays the wife the dowary and it has to be negotiated and agreed on by the wife or there's no marriage. When he divorces them, they keep the dowary as well as any other extra things he couldn't carry on his next trip. A win-win situation imo

The Muslims were very much doing this too. Europe had Marco Polo, from Venice, and the Muslim world had Ibn Battuta, and Asia had Zheng He. Each had their great explorers, great rulers, and great kings- each still had their own superstitions, bigotries, and unnecessary cruelties.

The world today, with mass communication and easy travel, is so much less interesting and uniform then in the olden days. Back then societies were truly unique and genuinely diverse,. each with their own dress, food, architecture etc. Today we're all essentially the same, wearing the same clothes, eating the same McDonalds, same cookie cutter utilitarian style architecture. Nothing to write home about.
