Interesting that you think that because to create character Shipwreck, Neil Ross Watched Jack Nicholson in The Last Detail where he plays a sailor Charged with taking a tall lanky pre-insane Randy Quaid to prison for grand larceny along with a black sailor.
I always got a Nicholson vibe from Shipwreck; there was an insouciant loner quality to his delivery that appealed to me, made him seem the more human of the Joe team. I'll never forget the episode where they stuck him in a false town and tried to gaslight him into thinking he had amnesia for the last 18 years. It just struck me how the hardest thing for him to accept was that he would ever be content being a husband and father in a quiet suburban life. I feel it was the closest G.I. Joe ever got to touching on PTSD. Which is a lot of dramatic heavy lifting to ask of a toy commercial.
I always they gave him a loser vibe and that he was not insubordinate but incompetent as well. What he was a walking attitude and a lot of the good leaders were trouble makers they were used to barking at authority. So I always liked shipwreck but didn't always enjoy his portrayal in gi joe.
It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized Shipwreck was the coolest GI Joe, what chief is in dungarees and a white hat in a desert reading the morning paper in a Cobra Bar? The world could be ending and he would still be trying to go out with Cover Girl that weekend. Most time's he'd be charging into battle with just a pistol.
Bless this man, I had the pleasure to meeting him a few weeks ago. I was the last person in line and we chatted for a while. I had told him what an inspiration he was and the roles he did, how I was just barely into the voice acting world and what I had accomplished, he was impressed though I didn't get to go professional which bummed him out. He said that voice acting today, isn't like how it was nearly 40 years ago, but to keep trying if I wanted it. I really feel like we don't have much time left with this wonderful person and when that day comes I will be incredibly sad, but I can look back at this meeting and go, "Dude was amazing."
Shipwreck has always been a favorite action figure of mine. I used to have naval battles involving him & the rest of the joes in the pool as a child. A pleasure to finally meet you sir after 35+ years!
I wasn't much of a fan of Shipwreck as a kid, but when I rewatched them as an older fan, I really appreciated him a lot more. And I really need to get around to watching the Last Detail.
I always enjoyed Shipwreck moments in the series. It was just something different and out there and wacky. Even when they used him in later seasons when his character wasn't as prominent it was always memorable. And he was in just such extreme moments. Dealing with a gigantic sized Polly, on an island of morphed creatures and being chosen to be commander of the team. I mean he was always in the center of something fun when his character showed up. Even some of the Knowing is Half the Battle PSA's with Shipwreck are some of the best and more memorable ones.
I actually got chills hearing him do Shippy's voice. I don't think the people who were involved with GIJoe at the time ever had any idea how the kids that grew up with it would carry it forever in their hearts as adults. I'm 50 years old, and I still love GIJoe. Thank you, sir, for making my childhood brighter.
Neil Ross is truly one of the most gifted voice actors out there. His range is so dynamic that unless you were told he played the part you'd have never thought it was him. There was an episode where Shipwreck & Dusty got into a scuffle and I wasn't until later that I learned Ross had played both characters.
I remember watching GIJoe on the living room couch one day, my mom was reading a magazine or something, anyway Shipwreck speaks and my mom laughs and goes "Is that supposed to be Jack Nicholson or something?" First time I ever heard of the great Jack Nicholson.
Voice actors are amazing. This is why I wish movie studios would hire ACTUAL voice actors for the big budget animated films instead of "A list" actors.
I always thought Shipwreck reminded me of Peter Reckel's "Bo Brady" on "Days of our lives", whose character was also a sailor. I love the old G.I Joe cartoon. I know that all old timers say this but they don't make them like that anymore. Strong, honorable male characters that young boys can look up to, along with strong female characters like Scarlet and Lady Jaye. Yes, it was primarily a boy's cartoon but I see nothing wrong with that. Today cartoons portray men as weak, bungling idiots and these are the role models that are young boys are meant to aspire to be like? To hell with that.
At this point, they would ruin it. Unfortunately, our military isn't looked at as highly nowadays as it was in the 80's, thus bringing back The Joes as they were would not work now...and it's a damn shame.

Here is my experience as a kid in the 80s and 90s. I knew a navy guy that looked like Shipwreck in my neighborhood in Chicago. He was a Puerto Rican dude named Hector Sandoval and spoke like that too 😂 So Hector Delgado was an imitation of a real navy Puerto Rican Chicagoan 😅
Shipwreck is a bit of a**hole, but I was in the Navy so of course he became one of my favorites. He was the only true Navy Man on the Team. Yeah, there were a couple of Divers; Torpedo and Deep Six, but they didn't fight on land. I am now collecting Action Figures, to later give my Grandson, I have Shipwreck, I passed on Torpedo and Diver. I mean, Torpedo isn't even a SEAL!
Shipwreck was one of the more fleshed-out characters from the cartoon. I always liked him.
the way he lead up to Shipwreck voice was perfect
I always thought shipwreck reminded me of jack Nicholson. Like a really fun happy version
Thats who I was hearing even if it wasn't him haha damn so he was going for jack to wow

Neil Ross is a gifted storyteller. I gotta see if he has a podcast

I didn't know the voice of Shipwreck is inspired by the voice of Jack Nicholson. Thats so cool!!! 💯💯💯

That is awesome story. Shipwreck became a fan favorite.
Love hearing this. Shipwreck set the tone for the cartoon. And he’s my favorite Joe too.
Mine too, but primarily because of "Memories of Mara" and "We'll always have Springfield"
Shipwreck, tells the best stories
ask Neil Ross!

Holy cow - when he morphs from the stoner into Shipwreck, I got goosebumps!

Shipwreck was a great character!
Sad he became comedy relief as the series went on.
@@IrishKyokushin He still was a great character!
The Last Detail...a great sailor movie.
A must watch for any Sailor
Awesome. I'm glad I found this video.
God Bless You!
Shipwreck was awesome in that cartoon.
I remember seeing the video cover for The Last Detail and thought that looked like Shipwreck with the sailor cap.
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Billy Bedusky! YES!
I always loved Shipwreck. Great character and voice.
I dunno why, but Shipwreck always reminded me of Kenny Loggins.
All of the people who voiced Shipwreck, Neil Ross was the best.

What about the Baroness?
Oh man, why dont they do a GI JOE REUNION cartoon series?!

@@phillipwattsjr.4714 Good point and sad.
@@phillipwattsjr.4714 might be exactly why we need a Reagan era styled Joe reunion cartoon.
Wow great voice actor, I almost feel like Neil Ross is related to bill hader another great voice actor..
When that live action gi joe movie came out shipwreck wasn't in it ....i knew it would suck

The voice of VIC from Disney Universe.
Shipwreck is the best character on G.I. Joe. This is not up for debate.
