I feel like Artpop could have been everything she wanted it to be if it everything wouldnt have unfolded the way it did. I love Artpop and have since it came out. Im so glad its finally getting its flowers, & this was a really good video essay!
Yes! I feel like it transcends me into a another world that is magical and like of goddess energy ❤ some people will just never feel it because it’s Just not in them to understand and feel.
The ARTPOP era had to be the most turbulent time in Gaga’s career. She had already proven herself to be an icon but personally, ARTPOP is too experimental for my taste. Long live Mother Monster!
I’m so glad to say I was just old enough to really remember this era in real time. In 2013 I was 11 and just really starting to listen to albums as a complete body of work. This album and bangerz have influenced my music taste still to this day. I think there is a study on how the music you liked from 12-14 or something like that, shapes what type of music we will like for the rest of our lives.
I don't think the songs on the album as a stand alone reach artistic heights, beyond good enjoyable pop - but looking at the whole package.... and the battle of Gaga's ego, sense of responsibility and dedication to the point of self destruction for the project almost made The Fame Monster unintentionally prophetic The desire for something greater, some bigger impact, for the Zeitgeist was there.... but it, IMO, was not successful. For Gaga as an artist, going through that journey and pushing her own boundaries, I think was overwhelming and all encompassing and something not all artists achieve. I am glad she made her way through it and has been able to explore, to this date, new modes of creativity and art. I love Artpop. I did at the time. I do now. I felt very lucky to be obsessively following her at the time. Although it should not be labelled a 'flop' in any way, and the album deserves greater recognition, I do not believe it's a masterpiece. It's a song collection of songs, if somewhat muddled.
i never really understood the comments like "artpop was experimental" "it was ahead of its time" :/ to me the artpop era was very much in line with what she had done before i just viewed it as another gaga album tbh
well right cause if you examine and listen closely, Gaga herself was already experimental and ahead of her time in her prior eras and releases too, with ARTPOP she just continued to push boundaries of what pop music can be and developing her own sound, she even said it here, she's been doing ARTPOP since the begging of her career and living by its philosophies, with the album she just defined it and expanded on it.
I’m actually so sad that the original version of “Do What You Want” is no longer available. Of course R. Kelly is disgusting and vile, but the song, the version featuring him, was so so good. One of my favorites, too. I ADORE Artpop, thanks for this video! XxxooO
I think its been confirmed now that MANiCURE was supposed to be the trilogy to Telephone! Some leaked documents revealed there was music video treatment for the song where Beyonce also makes a cameo at the end.
The reasons it ”flopped” is bcs firstly 2013 was the shift into streaming, ppl looked at sales but nobody actually bought anything and second the locals expected just a CD with songs on it, but it isn’t. It is a celebrational experience between her and us, her fans. And i’m honestly happy that we have this album together with her without other ppl giving their opinion on our relationship.
Great Video, ARTPOP means the world to me. I found Lady Gaga on the project (I was late) lol... I needed something to believe in at that time in my life and watching GAGA stand behind a project that so many people didn't understand was so awesome to me. Even though I can tell this era was painful for her I know she stood tall in her music and believed in it. "My Artpop could mean anything" Gypsy will always be my favorite off the project! watching her perform that at SXSW in 2014 sealed the deal for me. It was straight from the heart, it was what a struggling kid like me needed to hear to hold on. Thanks for putting this video together!
ARTPOP will forever be my fav Gaga album. not just because of what we got musically, but because of what the era & the sentiments stood for in terms of pop culture and in terms of being a musician. the songs are TOP TIER too tho 🤭
Lovely video. I´ve always admired Lady Gaga and her creative vision and it´s nice to watch something that so deeply analyses an album most have tried to ignore (in my own experience).
When it comes to other black male singers that Gaga could have gotten on "do what you want" besides creepy Kelly I always think of Usher Ne-Yo Trey Songz or even Miguel. I feel like any four of their voices could have added everything that R Kelly's voice added without adding the controversy lol and all four of them have enough range to fill in all of R Kelly's parts vocally. Or even one of those male singers with Christina and Gaga could have made a very iconic trio but at the very least at least we got Christina on the song and I personally like her version better anyway it was iconic in my opinion and two powerhouse vocalist on the same song like Gaga and Christina is literally like gold and silver to the ears but still just imagine the possibilities with those other male singers I listed 😖
So great man.I love everything about ARTPOP.Can you do another video about ACT 2 and maybe about "the original LG5" before Joanne(the record) was born?
Artpop is my favorite album and era in pop music. It’s really disappointing that this album didn’t resonate with the world like her previous albums. Biggest missed opportunity in modern pop music imo with all the potential. Amazing video
I truly want some of whatever people were smoking in 2013 because how is an album with a top 5 song a top 10 song a top 15 song and a top 30 song a "flop"?! 😭 And she went into the beginning of 2014 with three songs still on the charts 😭 and yeah I understand it's nothing insane like 1989 by Taylor Swift or something but this lady literally toured around the world for almost two years and pushed herself to the limit until she broke her hip (on stage) (and keep performing by the way) came back several months later and still had songs that went above top 15 top 10 and top 5 in a year like 2013 with so many high-profile releases like think about it Lady Gaga lyrics survived "Beyonce" the album that literally shook the music industry and Little ole Miss Gaga with all that she's been through the past 2 years still managed to be on the charts at the end of the year so therefore anyone that calls Artpop a "flop" is either a hater delusional or in denial and no one can convince me otherwise. 😭 Because Artpop was exactly what you called it "beautiful Chaos" and it changed the way I look at and listen to music forever. 💖💝💗💓
I agree that aura could have been a better lead single but when it comes to the most marketable commercial song on the album that has Applause it's a fun EDM dance track that can get anyone up and on their feet and I feel like Aura may have been a bit too experimental to be a lead single. Now the fans would have no doubtedly loved but I don't think the general public would have understood it as much especially with how much generic bubblegum pop that was being put out around the time. For an example Roar is a much more commercial and marketable song and I'm pretty sure that's one of the main reasons why it was more successful then Applause. Now I will say that I wish we would've at least got a video and continuation for telephone 😭
There alot mentions of various art works ,metaphors ,symbolism and themes within the album and era . Example being Sexx Dreams referencing the book Me ,Myself and I ,or the applause video refreshing various different works and artist . Themes like blondeness is apparent on songs like Donatella . There also a sort form of duality in the album ,in song like Artpop or Swine which show the two different sides of creating art and expression.
The art pop era was very confusing. The single choices was poor and didn’t really come in line. I think it was a huge project that didn’t have the right team behind
i really wish she would release a studio version of Do What U Want with another male artist, that song was so good and it's such a shame that R. Kelly had to ruin it.
Didn’t Gaga tweeted about the war with Roar? Didn’t her record label rejected aura as the lead because burka felt insensitive and tone deaf? Artpop is my favorite album by Gaga but this “analysis” felt very biased and to make her look like a victim. Also the protests in the Middle East against her influenced this album.

I can't explain how wonderful ARTPOP is, Renaissance paintings with technology is something super exotic!
Yes! I feel like it transcends me into a another world that is magical and like of goddess energy ❤ some people will just never feel it because it’s Just not in them to understand and feel.

I was 12 and went insane for this album omg it shaped who I am as a human isn’t that insane lmao

Thanks for this video. I enjoyed the era, the album and opening night of artRave was my first Lady Gaga concert. ❤

This is such a master work of a video documentary on YT, love your videos as always Wayne!
love the look & aesthetic of the Artpop era so much
I see a Wayne video, and I press play. An icon ✨
AMAZING VIDEO AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
Loving this video!! Well done on the good work ❤
So great man.I love everything about ARTPOP.Can you do another video about ACT 2 and maybe about "the original LG5" before Joanne(the record) was born?
Hello! I love your videos! Will you ever do a video on Beyonce's self titled era?
Most definitely 🙂
Artpop is my favorite album and era in pop music. It’s really disappointing that this album didn’t resonate with the world like her previous albums. Biggest missed opportunity in modern pop music imo with all the potential. Amazing video

26 minutes is not easy to create! I commend you on this dedication and perseverance
All I have to say is that this era was decades ahead for when it came out
back with another classic 🩷

I love love loved ARTPOP
ARTPOP is my fave Gaga album
JUSTICE FOR ARTPOP
Hey WayneTv can u please make a video on George Michael and his impact on the music industry
" Dope " is in my top 10 favorite songs EVER and to think , I heard the big Ga Ga fans hated it at the time lol
I see Artpop I click
Can someone explain to me how ARTPOP blends "pop with art" aside from some references to mythology, paintings etc. and some 2013 EDM production?

You should do an album ranking on Taylor Swift (once her new album comes out of course)
i really wish she would release a studio version of Do What U Want with another male artist, that song was so good and it's such a shame that R. Kelly had to ruin it.
Venus was NOT the first song she wrote for ARTPOP, in fact it was the LAST song she wrote lol
It's always the record companies who screw everything up. Wrong singles
