It’s so sad to think about how there’s so many songs off of The Fame / Monster that go unnoticed just because they weren’t mainstream hits. People claim that was her best era and how iconic it was, yet nobody really acknowledges any of the songs from that era that weren’t on the radio
I think ARTPOP was a career shifting era. No one, not even her, was ready for what that album release was about to entail. It's kinda sad that she's changed so much since then, but at the same time it's commendable to be able to look back at the first five years of an artist's career and find so many culture defining moments and music.
Her legacy is quite astonishing. She's the reason why naming fanbaes got popular and why anybody cared for pop music in early 2009. Before her, pop music was bubblegum and glam. Surely we had Britney Spears, Rihanna and Katy Perry releasing pop music but overnight hip hop domination disappeared because of her influence. She quite impressive.
I can't even express how Marry the Night was personally important for me. To me it was an anthem of failure and then rising again from the ashes. That's the message I found in the lyrics, to not give up and simply carry on. When one door closes, another one opens. Thank you for this video, it was very well researched, looking forward to more things from you!
Yes, I have always loved ARTPOP. I was there for all the backlash and controversy upon release and it was really sad because I felt like I just “got it” (what she was going for) immediately. It’s a shame she wasn’t allowed to go that full length. I think it’s still a highly influential album that people don’t give enough credit for, especially when it comes to the modern genre of hyper pop.
She writes she dances she sings she acts she has an artistic vision for everything she does - EVERYTHING EVEN FOR HER QUIRKY DRESSES ALL COMES WITH A MEANING. She dont do it for fun, she truly understands her craft. She is legend
Yeah, was born like 4 years before the Fame, so couldn't attend any of the concerts from that time. Hope to one day catch one one of these decades, maybe she'll have something akin to Madonna's Celebration tour one day. Definitely prefer her tone and vibe from during that time but will appreciate where she's at currently for what it's worth.
I’m actually having a friend of mine who’s a tattoo artist helping me on creating a piece that defines the entirety of ARTPOP. Not just a song or an outfit, or the album cover but the entire era. ARTPOP for me was the album that helped me realize that music will never die, to be yourself and most importantly people can never own your inner thoughts
your editing is so good!!! also I feel so sad ARTPOP was so messy and misunderstood, it's my favorite Gaga album and would probably be my favorite era because I love it's concept so much.
Gaga did an interview on May 24th 2024 at the chromonica ball movie premiere saying that this tour and new album is an ending and a new beginning to a very long period in her career that she had to say goodbye too and that her new album will be "completely different" to anything she's made before. I think this could be in reference to the fall-out of the ARTPOP era and the moving forward. I do truly feel like the Gaga that we knew from TFM-BTW era is gonna be back in full force.
That would be great to see! Personally I think expecting her to return to that could set a lot of people up for disappointment if she doesn’t deliver what they want, so as much as I love that era of her career, I’d love for her to keep moving forward. She’s not the same person she was 10-15 years ago. She’s grown and evolved and I get that she might not be able to return to that or she may not want to. Regardless I’m excited for whatever she chooses to do next!
I agree… it really feels like she’s back to her old self, but in a different way. I don’t have fears she’ll recycle old songs/sounds. Post ARTPOP to pre ASIB was a depressing time to be a long term fan, and ofc Gaga herself was going through a lot personally, but with Chromatica, a lot of healing took place, and I think everyone’s in such a good state now
This video is SO important. Thank you for covering this with such attention to detail, care, and when possible least bias, as well as being able to reflect on previous biases that didn’t allow you to enjoy certain facets. Even so, after this video, and having ingested her music since around the same age as yours, I now view her discography in an entirely different life, even albums not included in this video. I’m sure she’ll see this someday, I hope she’s happy someone understood her vision. Even if just One (pun intended).
I was obsessed with her during this whole period. Everybody was in my eyes sorry Madonna, but gaga truly is the queen of pop at least for the 21st century at least for
That's a very good video, I just wanna make some correction on sales. Poker Face sold 20.3 million nowdays and it's the second best seller digital single ever after "Rolling In The Deep", she became and is the only artist with two singles selling 7 million copies in the U.S. in this format. Born This Way sold 10 million while 8 million are the copies sent to the stores for the album but it actually sold 7.1 million. Anyway, ARTPOP was such an important album for the most of us and she's still touched by it, the fact that its second act should have been the experimental one says a lot, the one that we had was meant to be a preparation for the world or us at least, that's why by itself artpop isn't something very new musically and people think she was some kind of narcisist. Well there's a lot of Gaga you can't understand if don't dive in.
Gaga really was something special back then, pop music hasn't come close to her level of creativity since. It's missing the theatricality & showmanship, very generic these days
She said she would make the "album of the decade/milennium" or something like that, with both Born This Way and ARTPOP. She knew it was a pretentious goal, but she also knew it was just oh so GAGA. Born This Way encapsulates the darker side of human nature that always reaches the deepest parts of us, she took the best out of Rock, Heavy Metal, Dark Pop, Opera... she went on to even pull a nod to Tolkien with her whole universe-narrative, made-up languages on her lyrics, Christian motives pointing to the real roots of Christianism before people turned it into a business, the PAGAN and REBEL nature of Jesus, savior of truth. The one that in-christ-ates his power of charisma to influence others and lead them out of the cave, to the light of day. Even "love songs" on this album are talking about way more than just human relationships, they're making a statement rooting for real christian values; for liberation, compassion, union of the people, unconditional love, hope and faith, discipline and true will. This, coming from "TF/TFM" makes quite a robust statement on her real values, she even went to the extent of wearing prosthestics with an album named "Born This Way" lol kinda trying to make it OBVIOUS that she's not talking about being "born" in the material sense of the word... more like, being "born" ideologically, she was born with the "Kristhos" , an unstoppable force that inspires her to fight for freedom of the human race. She said she wore those things on her face beacuse she "didn't want her fans following for her beauty, she wants them to listen to her lyrics and appreciate her because of that". And then, with ARTPOP, she reminds us that the best way to fight for freedom is fighting with LOVE. Instead of turning her back on pop music, she embraces it but mixes it with the genres of music that would later come to actually end up defeating "pop music" as we knew it before those days. Yeah, trends change from time to time, we know... but this time, with tools like Social Media, it was a matter of someone like Gaga inspiring literally millions of people at the same time to go agains't basic/toxic/boomer standards and defy them with passion, love and creativity. Showing our "enemies" that love is stronger because love unites people, and when the people come together for the same causes, and the casues are not based on superficial/toxic traits... well, just try to mess with the little monsters and you will understand why terms like "Stan" instead of "fan" come from them and Gaga's peak on those years. The rest is history, she basically k*ll3d the pop industry by deconstructing everybody's idea of "FAME" first, "IDENTITY" later, and "ART" onwards. Since then, she's released Jazz + Country + OST + EDM successful albums while taking every chance she gets to be on a ceremony and sing a new genre, with standing ovations and everybody praising her on the trending topics as a standard... She keeps on pushing our society's old standards, teaching new generations great values like having self-criticism, respect and compassion for others, compromise to be informed and open to new ways of thinking... She took old american's "Simpson's Family" standards like a storm, and then she paved the way both through social media and pop music so tons of other people could have a succesful career on the industry without the need of a record label, she inspired a lot of people to share their talents and be as unique as we are, reminding us that everyone can FEEL "FAMOUS", because "we are all born SUPERSTARS". 🤘🏻✨✨
She’s the last one to be that famous. There’s no way to achieve that level anymore with the internet. I’m sure more people will become relevant in different ways, but she was the last traditional rock star. I was immediately obsessed with “Just Dance” when it came out but Art Pop is my favorite album
Artpop was everything to me in 2013-2014. I went to Artrave in San Jose and it was the best night of my life. I understand but also don't understand how the era flopped.
thank you so much for the video!! i love artpop so much... she changed everything i believed in, how i see pop music especially, i love every her album but artpop is something I've never been seen and heard before, and till this day no one was and is doing she was doing.
I agree with you 100% about the fame monster and born this way. BTW definitely feels like the TFM older sibling. I felt the same way about the lead single being corny too. Marry the night definitely got overshadowed. So many good deep cuts on the fame and fame monster. Summerboy, disco heaven, paper gangsta, so happy I could die, dance in the dark.
31:36 i truly believe the direction of artpop changed completely once she saw how the general public reacted to it. she wanted to incorporate art while also showing a more minimalist side to her, it even showed in the initial artpop promo pictures with the all white back drop, her initial sleek street looks and live performances with only her as the main focus. as the scrutiny increased, the more her outfits began to to look crazier because she realized that no matter what she did, the public would still view her simply as a persona who wanted attention and not an artist. she started adding vibrant colors and weird props to her performances, being almost naked onstage as the goddess of love, being puked on and even being a human bbq lol u could even see how manic she was while performing. the era was iconic and a hot mess at the same time but artpop will forever have a place in my heart. so ahead of it’s time
i’ve always felt like Perfect Illusion is about artpop and the response to it. Almost like Artpop was the era when gaga realized that popularity isn’t love and fame can turn into condemnation.
What are the songs that you play in the background, I love the jazz chill type vibes that have that 90s house soothing Otherwise enjoying the video, I wish ARTPOP iTunes festival 2013 was the final because it didn’t sound so over produced.
you said that ARTPOP marked the end of an era for Gaga as the unpredictable artistic genius. I think that might be because she was on her way to get more mature in a way that made her less "crazy" (is this the good word??). After the ARTPOP era she gradually changed her image to a more toned down and calmer. Also, Gaga said that Chromatica is ARTPOP's little sister, which is easily visible on the album and her actions from the era, so it's not like the ARTPOP concept is dead. I think that the same thing that happened to Gaga after ARTPOP also happened to Beyonce after 4 and to Taylor Swift after Lover, they just matured and moved on from fast and cherish sounds of eg. B'Day and 1989 to more mature sounds of BEYONCE and Folklore. Gaga just moved on, at least with Joanne, but despite heavy influences Chromatica is still more toned down than ARTPOP while also being personal and diverse.
I think its funny seeing videos like this pop up already when she's only been making music for 15 years or so considering she plans on making music for the rest for the rest of her life. I think once she's in her 50's or 60's it'd make more sense to say look back and say she had a golden age, but she's still in her prime! lmao
Actually Gaga didn't had 4 #1 hits they were #1 on the radio which is another record. But Gaga is second to Mariah to have 10 consecutive singles to debut on the top 10 in the U.S. while Mariah had 11 ❤
Shell never match the success of the first three projects mainly because she doesnt want that level of exposure anymore. She also cleaned house of alot of the people that came up with those concepts and ideas.
Yeah I would argue 2017-2018 was her golden era. She had Joanne, which was highly successful, then she got to perform at the Super Bowl, and then star in a highly acclaimed movie and win an Oscar for her role in that movie..
"A Star is Born" was good, but I certainly don't think that time is more popular than Gaga in 2009-2011. "Shallow" is really the only song the general public would know from that era vs. "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "Bad Romance," "Born this Way" just to name a few of her huge radio hits during those early years. Gaga was everywhere back then. Her overall popularity sadly waned after 2011 ended.
@@Texaslawhornyeah but popularity is more than just sales and numbers. In 2017-2018 she was more of a household name by then and was already being seen as a legend in the music industry and now staring in a hugely successful movie. I believe if they wanted to, there could’ve been more singles pushed out of A star is born, and they would’ve been just as successful…that’s just my opinion
@@daytonsouthall1137 Think it depends on the demographic. 2008-2011 (or 2013) being the golden era for the kids who grew up seeing her at that time while 2017-2018 was more GP friendly while serving as a gateway for new fans who either never heard of her or didn't give her a chance back in the day to delve further into her discography. Some people still only remember her for the meat dress or that one hermaphrodite meme image. In a way think it would be a decent tactic to feed each of the two audiences their separate album just to keep both satisfied. Like siblings taking turns to use the computer. Or maybe one that tries to do both, but that may just end up pleasing neither.
I don’t hate them by any means, but I think on an almost objective level, The Fame to ARTPOP were at a level artistically that Joanne and Chromatica are not. Both are still great albums though!
@@azzyb6165 You miss a LOT, she has several of her best songs in the following albums, really she always renews herself and clearly it is not the same as in 2009-13
For Telephone, the reason why Beyoncé is on Telephone is because Darkchild didn’t trust that the song would be a hit with just Gaga so he requested to add Beyoncé on the track.
@@spilledbeans7000 I didn’t say she did, but the producer (Darkchild) had his doubts so that’s why he asked for Beyoncé. TFM was being made at a time when Gaga only had like 3 hits.
You mention still waiting for a continuation of Telephone but isn't that pretty much what Beyonce's Videophone ended up being? All the talk about underrated and forgotten Gaga deep cuts and even I forgot about that one until fairly recently. Probably because I've never particularly been a fan of the "Beyhive" but still....it came out not long after Telephone so I always just viewed it as the "To Be Continued" extension of where Telephone leaves off.
@@waynetvofficial Oh shit...did it? That whole period of time is a blur lol. But I mean, honestly now....wouldn't that be some on brand Gaga shit anyway? Release the trilogy out of order just to mess with people? Like Tarantino making a name for himself by essentially telling his stories in reverse by starting with the climax then jumping back to show how everyone arrived there.
Years later the fact that those freaking headache inducing typewriter sounds and riffle shot sounds are all we can hear is still as annoying. Where is the song? Mind boggling that this was green lit. Some parts show Madonna’s great energy like when she gets mugged but man the blond hairstyle and clothes make her look contrived and older. Karma since the song was stolen by Mirwais.

I think its funny seeing videos like this pop up already when she's only been making music for 15 years or so considering she plans on making music for the rest for the rest of her life. I think once she's in her 50's or 60's it'd make more sense to say look back and say she had a golden age, but she's still in her prime! lmao
Not you ignoring Aura as the continuation of Paparazzi and Telephone😭
He didn't ignore it
thank you 😭
Just curious but do your videos ever get copyrighted because of the clips/pictures you use?
summerboy is so underrated
can u do a “golden age of nicki minaj” with the albums pink friday, roman reloaded and pinkprint and what you think led to the end of that golden era
OH MY GOD YESSS
Kylie Minogues cover of Marry The Night is stunning 💯👌👠👑 Love her Artpop era
3:50 wait shouldn't Mariah be on that list too, since her first album had four number 1 hits?
Actually Gaga didn't had 4 #1 hits they were #1 on the radio which is another record. But Gaga is second to Mariah to have 10 consecutive singles to debut on the top 10 in the U.S. while Mariah had 11 ❤
Who’s here after DWAS ?!
lowkey need gaga to have this type of passion or hunger for music back in time for LG7
ARTPOP Forever…✨🥹💞🔵
Dance in The Dark. My beloved.
I wish lady Gaga herself watched this video 😭
ARTPOP is the designated car CD
Shell never match the success of the first three projects mainly because she doesnt want that level of exposure anymore. She also cleaned house of alot of the people that came up with those concepts and ideas.
She was beautiful back in the day.
Her face is different now.
Long live Artpop!
20:34 at the time. Lady gaga was invented by Madonna to perform a mashup of both songs live. Gaga couldn't. Make it.
and all for our madre monstere
awesome video but Applause peaked at #4 in the US not #6
Golden age? Literally most of her most popular stuff was from A Star is Born. That was her golden age
Where is Chromatica?
Applause peaked at #4 not #6 in the USA charts
I need a video like this done for Beyoncé wayne thanks 😊
Oh of course 😊
For me, Chromatica was a sort of rebirth of what she was doing before....
the fame sneak
I think it’s sad that you never mentioned Joanne or chromatica, we’re still in the golden age of Gaga,
SLAY
I don’t hate them by any means, but I think on an almost objective level, The Fame to ARTPOP were at a level artistically that Joanne and Chromatica are not. Both are still great albums though!
I personally disagree! I was obsessed with her first 6 years of her career but really do not care about any of her releases since cheek to cheek
@@azzyb6165 You miss a LOT, she has several of her best songs in the following albums, really she always renews herself and clearly it is not the same as in 2009-13
Well we were unlucky if It wasn't for covid Chromatica would have been insane
Gaga and Rouge the Bat?? Twin!!
For Telephone, the reason why Beyoncé is on Telephone is because Darkchild didn’t trust that the song would be a hit with just Gaga so he requested to add Beyoncé on the track.
Nah. Every Gaga song was a hit from The Fame to Born This Way. She didn’t need Beyoncé lol
@@spilledbeans7000 I didn’t say she did, but the producer (Darkchild) had his doubts so that’s why he asked for Beyoncé. TFM was being made at a time when Gaga only had like 3 hits.
3:53 Mariah had 4 #1s from her first album…..
Can you PLEASE make a video like this with Melanie Martinez?
I think Joanne was also part of her golden era, it showed her skills as a guitar player and singer.
I really like to think that joanne was the start of her second golden era, joanne-a star is born-chromatica
Video Phone came out before Telephone lol
@@waynetvofficial Oh shit...did it? That whole period of time is a blur lol.
But I mean, honestly now....wouldn't that be some on brand Gaga shit anyway? Release the trilogy out of order just to mess with people? Like Tarantino making a name for himself by essentially telling his stories in reverse by starting with the climax then jumping back to show how everyone arrived there.
Troy's departure is ultimately what destroyed her career and some say that it has never recovered since.
Now why did Madonna do that…just arrogant af
She peaked after her first hits
artpop is def not a golden age lol
"of all time". Every time I hear that I'm like. no.
Ok this video was done so right and with such love for the subject matter 👏🏽💯😍 thank you and you have a few fan!
This was an absolute joy to watch. With the ARTPOP era, it literally was ahead of its time. Look at how much opinion has shifted on it! It was definitely my favourite era. So excited for LG7! 🖤🤍
