19:49 exactly and I want people to remember that Beyoncé stuck by R&B with 4, moved into more Hip-Hop led music with BEYONCÉ then started majorly shifting into other genres Usher chose EDM leaned into Hip-Hop led music with Hard II Love and “A” and recently in 2024 just came back to making R&B with COMING HOME The difference is Beyoncé is not going into popular genres but bringing genres to mainstream and reminding people of their Black origins So I never want to hear “Beyoncé abandoned Black people” when her legacy revolves around Black Art with films such as LEMONADE and BLACK IS KING with The Gift Soundtrack Usher’s focus musically is himself, even with COMING HOME he said he’s essentially coming home to himself, his motives with these genres aren’t to bring R&B back to the forefront but rather himself, he’s not stepping into Afrobeats to show some form of community but bc it’s popular Usher is about what music can do for him Beyoncé is about what can she do for music and her community But bc she’s a successful Black Woman (who so happens to be light-skinned and bc oof the history of colourism they don’t trust her and it is a very minuscule part her success but also bc she works so hard, each member of DC has said this btw) they’ll choose to hate on her instead of him Edit: I think another reason we see this shift in Beyoncé musically is bc she’s been undermined and with her level of success has been in rooms that Usher hasn’t been in where the talk just makes her wanna get Blacker by the second bc of the things she knows they do to undermine Black talent
I’ll never forget Black People and quite frankly white people (although they were streaming, their was a huge side who hated her), dragging her for Sasha Fierce. She was doing EDM before it was popular and trained people’s ears for it. Ugh, we don’t understand her 2000s intelligence enough for me. Like she was really that girl 😭
Thank you! Your execution was amazing! Beyoncé honestly doesn’t go with trends but rather sets them. She looks at the current musical landscape and instead of trying to fit in, she tries and succeeds in pushing the envelope. I saw it with 4, everyone was pushing EDM, European house, but she took a gamble and brought back R&B mixed with funk and African influence. Then it all became clear with self titled, even changing the way we receive music. Usher is obviously talented, however, he tends to either remain in R&B and not challenge himself, and when we think he is, he just does a song or two, in a different genre purely for trends. Beyoncé is a pioneer and evolutionist.
This video was so well done. I love that you started with MJ cause he truly is the shoulders they both stand on. Usher is just as great a vocalist and dancer as Beyoncé however he lacks the visionary component that MJ had and Beyoncé perfected in the late 2010s. Usher got comfortable Beyoncé stayed ambitious. However Usher’s Super Bowl, performance reminded us all that there has still been no male artist after him who has surpassed him vocally and as a dancer simultaneously. And that is what makes Usher special.
They are not equally talented singers or dancers. Usher is a superior dancer Beyoncé is a superior vocalist by miles. Beyoncé has the edge over him for being far more versatile, revolutionary, and visionary with generally better music & singles also. MJ was/is the only male beyonce.
i find the usher cameo in “naughty girl” (2004) and the beyonce cameo for the “bad girl” live performance (2005) to be very symbolic for the both of them. excellent video!
This is a great video!!! Very respectful to both artists involved and pretty honest. I also like to add that Beyoncè's side projects like The Gift/Black is King and Everything Is Love adds more shading and depth to her artistry. Her seemingly fierce determination to highlight beautiful aspects of Black culture and Black musical traditions is just so exciting to watch.
Wow! Thanks for this! I never realized they had so many parallels. Part of me hopes that Usher has something more up his sleeve and he'll surprise us later in this decade 😊
I Enjoyed the this video a lot usher is my favorite male artist and Beyonce is of course my favorite female artist and artist of all time love this breakdown and glad you said brother and sister in music I always thought usher and Beyonce were family as well as musical peers I’ll be watching again and love how you took your time with this one seen the title and thumbnail and knew it was gonna be a stellar video usher and Beyonce are legends in their respective fields they had the best teachers/instructors and they were the top 2 students in they’re Michael Jackson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye Tina Turner, Dianna Ross, classes this video just a reminder of they’re greatness and they deserve their flowers well done for this video can’t wait for the next one looking forward to your Renaissance Act 2 album review and thoughts
I love that you made this video because as a multi talented artist myself my musical inspirations have always been MJ, Beyoncé, and Usher at least as all around entertainers. Goes to show I have great taste and know how to pick the right mentors. *pats myself on the back*
Beyoncé makes it look so easy but sustaining a music career is EXTREMELY hard. Remaining at the top for decades is close to impossible. Only 0,1 percent of people in that world manage to achieve that. I have such a huge respect for artists, period and more specifically Beyoncé and Usher. They are legends in my book.
Great video per usual!! They were both everywhere during the 00’s. The albums, the singles the music video’s & performances; these 2 definitely studied from MJ & Janet. Black Excellence
Ok all these years I kept thinking that Usher is a gemini because one of his album, but he’s not lol And damn all the Usher disrespect during the superbowl! Everyone just cared about the few seconds cameo of TS, Usher is incredibly underrated and under appreciated . People nowadays don’t care about high quality anymore.
great video Wayne - always looking forward to your content. Not sure if this is relevant but I have a theory that after MJ died thats when male artists stopped "showing out" musically and performance wise. Not to discredit their talent and hard work - to me there has always been a clear difference in performances pre MJ & post MJ. When he was alive a lot of male artists looked up to him & would go all the way out to impress him or to be noticed by him. Usher included, but my guess is after MJ they just said 'what's the point?'
Hip hop I think sucked up all the most successful black male artists post-MJ. Think about it, most of the most successful black male artists in the 2010s were hip hop.
15:53 His marriage to his first wife at the time along with his troubled relationship with his mother both played a role with the release of the album, which in my opinion I believe it affected the impact the album could’ve had. People were turned off by who he married considering it was his first public relationship since Chilli. It did good in sales of course, but it’s his least memorable album, again in my opinion.
That situation will always reflect badly on Usher's fanbase. There's no reason he should've had to protect his wife from his own fans, a lot whom are Black women. Just terrible.
Imagine an Usher album explaining Black fatherhood Like a LEMONADE of sorts where we are breaking generational stigmas of being affectionate and toxic masculinity to show Black children especially sons love from their fathers Like that would be revolutionary And if it came right after Looking 4 Myself we would’ve gotten an expansion in different sounds I think he could do it with his next album but maybe from the perspective of how his new partner showed him how to love not only her but himself and better raise a family then we can do the fatherhood album bc we can’t do a jarring change in sound when he just had his major comeback But yet again to keep people interested it might work not copying LEMONADE and doing his own Usher thing
Honestly he has a song like that called “Sins of my Father”, but I think people forget that Confessions was propelled by his relationship issues with Chilli and Beyoncé’s Lemonade album and probably even “Beyonce” thrived off of peoples fascination with her romantic relationship. Usher had his worst career moments when he married a woman no one wanted him with! Entertainment is more entertaining when people get to be all in your business and like who you entertain. Look at how big Kanye got after getting with Kim.
I wish more artists would talk about fatherhood. Recently Earl Sweatshirt had a song called 27 braids which is oart of imo a beautiful era in his career that seems to be focussed on healing and celebrating his recovery As did Jay on 4 44
You fleshed out what I have been thinking since 2005. I've always said this but didn't have the details to back it up. I feel so validated LOL and thus was so well done, thank you! Subscribed!
Has anyone listened to an usher album? The man switches genres, like he's changing clothes. I think its crazy how everyone keeps say he doesn't take risk. In fact, i would argue thats why his career didn't take off like beyonce. Besides confession, Usher's albums are all over the place, with no set theme. Both artists follow trends and does whatever is popular at the time (in my opinion) but beyonce will take a trend and make it her own! Usher will just flat out copy the trend, with no inspiration. I love both artist regardless ❤
Its simple beyonce has fans that will support anything she does do she was aloud to do anything. People criticize usher for doing anything not confessions its not hard. But popularity doesn't equal success. They are very similar in career success. Both of them have done things the other hasnt and never will do
Loved this video you gained a follower from me as someone who loves Beyoncé and I normally don’t care for male artist but Usher has always been my fav him and Beyoncé are legendary just Beyoncé has challenged herself and her music a lot more then usher has and maybe made better choices but still love him down.
I actually liked no limit 2017 thug was an animal Haha, good times But Ushers fall didn't have to happen Especially the way it did. And Coming home is imo a really good start to R and B for 2024 Its kinda amazing that 20 years later we get an artist showing he can still make decent music
I feel like Usher lasted pretty long in the mainstream but faded away because he wasn’t dabbling in different genres besides EDM in the beginning of the 2010’s. He’s become a 2000’s novelty act which is fine because he ran the decade. Beyoncé on the other hand was able to stay in the mainstream because she switched it up a lot during the 2010’s & beyond. Also her being Jay Z’s wife also gave her a leg up lol
If it weren't for her loyalty to the group, she wouldve been popping alot sooner. But im glad it turned out the way it did. She would've been competing with Ashanti, Aaliyah, Lil Mo, Mary J, back in the 90s, 00s.
Could we possibly do a musical comparison of actual siblings THE GREATEST SIBLINGS OF MUSIC: Michael and Janet The Jacksons (not to be confused with their group)
They are very similar. But his father was not over the urban department at Columbia like Beyonce’s dad. Also Bey made better personal choices image and marriage wise. To me, he actually has better songs, even after confessions but his fans stopped listening.
This is a very misogynistic comment. I'm not sure if you meant it that way, but attributing Bey's success to men by mentioning her father and husband is very derogatory and disgusting. I don't know if you paid attention to the video, but he makes it clear that their artistic divide happened during Beyonce's 4 era. I thought it was very well known that her 4 album was when she took full creative control after she had fired her father. Not to mention, Matthew Knowles was legit never employed by Colombia - he was solely Bey's manager. Lastly, of course you can prefer Usher's music over hers, but I think you're ignoring the fact that Beyonce has 3 of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 21st century - and even of all time. Then again, you did say songs. So are you saying that Usher is more of a singles artist while Bey is more of an albums artist?
Beyoncé makes real albums when usher just make a compilation of singles that’s why he fell off, compare renaissance with coming home u can see the stark difference in artistry nothing to do with marriage
I guess taking the misogynistic route is easier than coping with the fact that Usher has no clear creative direction and artistic vision in the making of his albums especially post Confessions/post L.A Reid, Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox behind him while Beyoncé took full creative control over her music after firing her dad almost 15 years ago now, actually grew and NEVER fell off since
? LOL I don't know where you heard that Mathew Knowles was over Sony Urban at Columbia back in the day but it's definitely not the truth. He was never the head of any subdivision of a major conglomerate. The only thing he owned and operated was Music World Entertainment, his management company and imprint that Beyoncé/Destiny's Child was under with allowances from the actual record label, Sony/Columbia. A black man that actually did run the Urban sections of Sony was Michael Mauldin, who resided over the black music division of Columbia for many years and who is "coincidentally", Jermaine Dupri's father.
Beyonce takes risks with her artistry. She also dives into her Southern roots to transcend genres. I think Bday was the era that would create the Surprise Beyonce album with visuals. Lemonade will become her most artistic album.Beyonce pulled from the music history of Louisiana and Texas while taking notes from Janet Jackson, and Tina Turner. Usher doesn't take any risks and I believe this is his weakness. Instead of blending in and doing songs that did not stand out from his peers; he became stagnant. Usher always reminded me of Bobby Brown. You could see some MJ influence in him but Usher was more street. Beyonce is a combo of Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Josephine Baker, MJ and Janet.
The chemistry they had while performing bad girl live and the sexual tension between them was either so obvious or I was just making things up into my head 😂 cause same
Usher doesn't write his music. Lol. The confessions album was about Jermaine Dupri's breakup, he wrote the record. Usher like Beyonce get their writing credits from vocally arranging the albums and adding a bridge or verse in their music.
Beyonce does write tho. You people accuse her of stealing music, but she literally credits every individual for their contributions, but according to y'all it's IMPOSSIBLE that she ever wrote anything
Beyonce has been stealing songs, videos, music concepts from other artists through out her career. Beyonce has crushed the careers of so many upcoming gifted artists, song writers, choreographers etc...check out what Tiffany Red amoung many others. Usher has not stolen from other artists and has built a successful career with his incredible talent and hard work collaboration with other artists 🎨 and evolving style. Usher is a gifted phenominal performer with incredible voice ! 🎵🎶🎶🎶 ❤ 💚
Beyonce doesn't have to embody all things MJ to be his equal. For instance, she can't write a song to save her life. The comparisons stem from being the best of their generation, having the best videos, tours, albums & performances. Huge career moments and dance imitations. Especially Impact and being an all around force in the industry with tremendous impact. Every MJ album is a huge career leap, and the same is true for Beyonce. The female MJ is obviously not Janet. Beyonce even sounded like a young Michael Jackson when she was a little girl in a singing group. Beyonce is a better performer than MJ if not equal and Coachella proves it. It's the most searched performance in Google history and it's live stream broke records. And I neglected to mention that Beyonce is a vocal Einstein, She uses her voice the same way MJ used his art of dance. A master of Dance vs a master of Voice.
@@cavalrystyles8776Oh, my days. You are RIDICULOUS. Nobody is MJ’s equal and not every Beyoncé album has an impact. She doesn’t even have an “Off The Wall” to begin with. It was impossible for him to outsell Thriller but not impossible to maintain his success. He also had a clear artistic direction with his follow ups
Dangerously is 9× platinum. It sold 9.5 million in the US
19:49 exactly and I want people to remember that Beyoncé stuck by R&B with 4, moved into more Hip-Hop led music with BEYONCÉ then started majorly shifting into other genres
Usher chose EDM leaned into Hip-Hop led music with Hard II Love and “A” and recently in 2024 just came back to making R&B with COMING HOME
The difference is Beyoncé is not going into popular genres but bringing genres to mainstream and reminding people of their Black origins
So I never want to hear “Beyoncé abandoned Black people” when her legacy revolves around Black Art with films such as LEMONADE and BLACK IS KING with The Gift Soundtrack
Usher’s focus musically is himself, even with COMING HOME he said he’s essentially coming home to himself, his motives with these genres aren’t to bring R&B back to the forefront but rather himself, he’s not stepping into Afrobeats to show some form of community but bc it’s popular
Usher is about what music can do for him
Beyoncé is about what can she do for music and her community
But bc she’s a successful Black Woman (who so happens to be light-skinned and bc oof the history of colourism they don’t trust her and it is a very minuscule part her success but also bc she works so hard, each member of DC has said this btw) they’ll choose to hate on her instead of him
Edit: I think another reason we see this shift in Beyoncé musically is bc she’s been undermined and with her level of success has been in rooms that Usher hasn’t been in where the talk just makes her wanna get Blacker by the second bc of the things she knows they do to undermine Black talent
Usher is a superior dancer
Beyoncé is a superior vocalist by miles.
Beyoncé has the edge over him for being far more versatile, revolutionary, and visionary with generally better music & singles also.
MJ was/is the only male beyonce.
@@cavalrystyles8776She’s not a visionary. People work for her and then she steals their work.
I really wish Usher performed Climax at the Superbowl. That song was a masterpiece!
i find the usher cameo in “naughty girl” (2004) and the beyonce cameo for the “bad girl” live performance (2005) to be very symbolic for the both of them. excellent video!
I Enjoyed the this video a lot usher is my favorite male artist and Beyonce is of course my favorite female artist and artist of all time love this breakdown and glad you said brother and sister in music I always thought usher and Beyonce were family as well as musical peers I’ll be watching again and love how you took your time with this one seen the title and thumbnail and knew it was gonna be a stellar video usher and Beyonce are legends in their respective fields they had the best teachers/instructors and they were the top 2 students in they’re Michael Jackson, James Brown, Marvin Gaye Tina Turner, Dianna Ross, classes this video just a reminder of they’re greatness and they deserve their flowers well done for this video can’t wait for the next one

Great video! Love both Beyoncé and Usher and so grateful to have grown up with them and see them both become legends!
great video Wayne - always looking forward to your content.
Interesting take.
15:53 His marriage to his first wife at the time along with his troubled relationship with his mother both played a role with the release of the album, which in my opinion I believe it affected the impact the album could’ve had. People were turned off by who he married considering it was his first public relationship since Chilli. It did good in sales of course, but it’s his least memorable album, again in my opinion.
great context. thank you!!
That situation will always reflect badly on Usher's fanbase. There's no reason he should've had to protect his wife from his own fans, a lot whom are Black women. Just terrible.
Imagine an Usher album explaining Black fatherhood
Like a LEMONADE of sorts where we are breaking generational stigmas of being affectionate and toxic masculinity to show Black children especially sons love from their fathers
Like that would be revolutionary
And if it came right after Looking 4 Myself we would’ve gotten an expansion in different sounds
I think he could do it with his next album but maybe from the perspective of how his new partner showed him how to love not only her but himself and better raise a family then we can do the fatherhood album bc we can’t do a jarring change in sound when he just had his major comeback
But yet again to keep people interested it might work not copying LEMONADE and doing his own Usher thing
Recently Earl Sweatshirt had a song called 27 braids which is oart of imo a beautiful era in his career that seems to be focussed on healing and celebrating his recovery
As did Jay on 4 44

Awesome documentary. 👍👍
Yes Beyoncé and usher everything to me 🥹🥹
Its simple beyonce has fans that will support anything she does do she was aloud to do anything. People criticize usher for doing anything not confessions its not hard. But popularity doesn't equal success. They are very similar in career success. Both of them have done things the other hasnt and never will do

But Ushers fall didn't have to happen
Especially the way it did. And Coming home is imo a really good start to R and B for 2024

GREAT REVIEW!!
Solid analysis.

I guess taking the misogynistic route is easier than coping with the fact that Usher has no clear creative direction and artistic vision in the making of his albums especially post Confessions/post L.A Reid, Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox behind him while Beyoncé took full creative control over her music after firing her dad almost 15 years ago now, actually grew and NEVER fell off since
@@creolito9600Beyonce doesn’t make anything. People write for her, she sings the songs and then steals the credits.
Looking 4 myself DID NOT sell 500k first week 😂. It did 128k. It only sold over 500k in total, not first week.
