Village is a hard one to rank. It is scary at times, and has the single scariest section in any RE title, ever, but because the game is such a grab bag of ideas, playing almost like an RE Greatest Hits, it also gets goofy and silly at times too, so the scariness levels are all over the place.
And yeah, obviously 7 was going to be in first.

On one hand, you fight a power rangers robot wars battle against a cocky german magneto in a giant mech who trash talks you, and on the other hand, you have to go through a haunted mansion that slowly builds up to a hallucination of a giant fetus that cries and laughs in a dark, red lit hallway, chasing you.

      @crazydud3380 9 місяців тому +36

@@thesnatcher3616 Yep, I understand some calling that tonal inconsistency, and they aren't wrong. My impression was that it was designed as Resident Evil greatest hits collection, with the wildly different sections recalling different eras of the franchise, so I kind of interpreted it as a bit of a victory lap for the franchise, while also continuing 7's direction of telling a story with more personal stakes. I personally identify more with a protagonist fighting to save his wife and daughter more than I do a protagonist fighting to stop a terrorist threat (same reason I preferred Claire's section in RE2 remake).

@@crazydud3380 I agree. I thought it was great. I love me some variety and I think the game did a good job hinting at the type of experiences you'll receive with each section with the personality of each lord in the beggining. Heisenberg is loud and over the top. Dimetrscu is sophisticated yet haughty. Moreau is pathetic and Donna says nothing yet her doll doesn't shut up(this inconsistency perhaps hinting that something is just off about her). It knew what game it wanted to be from the beggining I feel. The marketing just seems to have misled people. And let's face it, Resident Evil always had odd tonal shifts in it's games. You are in an antique and archaic police station one moment, and the next you'll be in a super high tech bio lab.

When I started the video I knew that RE7 had to at least be in the top 3, I was glad to see you gave it the correct spot at number 1 lol. I do have other favorite RE games over RE7, but I absolutely love the game and I think it easily takes the cake as the scariest RE game. The atmosphere is incredibly oppressive and trekking through the dilapidated mansion in first person is absolutely nerve wrecking every time I play it. The sound design is perfect.
My top 5 scariest RE games are:
    1. RE7
    2. RE2 Remake
    3. RE1 Remake
    4. RE4 Remake and Original (equally scary in different ways for me)

Imho RE4 (both the original and the remake) is not a quiet kind of scary like classic RE games, but a loud and hectic type of scary. Players constantly get ganked by a mob of parasite-infested-cultists, in which they need to pay attention to their positioning and decide which gun is best used for the moment (while paying attention to the amount of ammos in the inventory).

For me, it was the scarlet part of any game period. Such a perfect build-up of dread that starts as soon as you enter the foggy grounds before the manor with the mia hallucinations. It also has a great payoff with the fetus and red lit halls. There are so many little things as well that add to it, like the picture of the woman laying down that falls to make her look like she was hung and the quiet scream from Ethan after collecting the fuse. It was perfect like he was trying to hold it but just couldn't. It's also more personal given that the hallucination was tied to Ethans' fear of what Rose might become when put back together and the small bit of Donna we actually see is so eerie right before she picks up Angie again.
(TLDR- The Beneviento manner was damn near perfect, and I just felt like gushing about it.)

Definitely but village unfortunately has only one scary area. That is why village is a highly disappointing game. Not to mention, the game gives you too much shit in hand and at that point I looked back on how 4 actually was and I can confirm that the game was only popular because of Lady Dimitrescu.
Before the remake of 4 I even wondered if it was even possible to use currency for a resident evil game. While I do think so now, it almost felt impossible.

I had so much fun playing RE7. I bought it at Walmart on its release date about six minutes after midnight, went right home, popped it in, and I'm pretty sure I stayed up until around 6 in the morning playing that game. • @mikegamikega

I played the lot before RE7 and it was a return to form in the horror department. It is to me the most frightening game. While there are plenty of cheap jumpscares, there is plenty of substantive qualities to the game that make it genuinely difficult to play at times during a first playthrough. The family and enemies are terrifying for one. Being stalked by Jack is the scariest thing in the entire franchise to me. First playthrough I was on edge even after killing Jack, being totally unsure that he was actually dead. Not to mention the atmosphere is far and away the scariest, though the Gothic and Victorian elements of RE1 and RE Village also make a great scene. Everything on the property is in complete disarray and completely filthy. Little things like that go a long way in showing the depravity of the family and how unpredictable they are, whereas in a game like RE1 and RE2 there is still some order in the surrounding environment.

Easily the scariest. I know a lot of people aren't too fond of static camera angles, tank controls, and finite resources anymore, but the fixed cinematic camera angles, slow deliberate movements, and knowing that you really can screw yourself by using too many resources really do make for tension that the newer ones just can't do anymore. Fighting waves of enemies with enough firepower to conquer a small country knowing each enemy is dropping more resources than you spent to kill them is fun and can be scary, but nothing tops going into a new room with a handgun and only three bullets left, and hearing a zombie moaning out of sight or god-forbid a sound you've never heard before.

Re4 original too, the way the people attacked and flanked you was so stressful and horrific. Now that everything has evolved, the new games stress me more than scare. I agree no other game in the series has had as much consistent horror and unsettling atmosphere than 7. I will say 8 has the single scariest section in the series with House Beneviento, but sadly the horror peaks very early in the game and the rest of it just doesn’t really compare to that portion. Fun gameplay and good story developments but the horror is very inconsistent and felt like a theme park for different styles of it.

Resident Evil Village is an amazing game. I don't know why it seems to be among the most disliked RE games.
The game is visually stunning. I don't mean the graphics here, i mean the surroundings e.g. the castle are beautiful. Art style is the closest word i can come up for it.
The only reason I can figure out why it's so disliked among RE fans is that some fans are very into the lore and the lore aspect is the weakest link of RE Village.

I played RE7 at night in VR while my parents were out for the weekend, and I happened to wear a white shirt somewhat similar to Ethan's. All of that combined made RE7 feel like a real life event rather than a gaming experience, it helped a lot that the game takes place over 1 night and is 8 hours long, so when I pulled an all nighter to beat the game for the first time it worked perfectly, the sun rised both in game and irl. So with 7 the game is generally scary throughout with the exception for me being the part where you play Mia where it’s just not scary at all but still enjoyable gameplay. But then with 8 I love the gameplay with the entire game even though most of it isn’t really scary but the house Beneviento is definitely one of if not the scariest sequence in the entire series so far. Of course all this being just my opinion but I also want to say I’m surprised for a video being about the scariness in the RE series, the Beneviento sequence was barely mentioned. But still a great video with great insight and I found your placement of the rankings to be generally close with my personal placement.

There is more than a personal interpretation, there are also several types of fear. Anxiety, a fear of anticipation, which will be brought about by the staging and the rhythm. Stress, which will be brought on by the present situation and the need to act quickly and well. Both will be perceived as fear by our brain (accelerated heart rate, hyper focus). Some Resident Evil are more stressful than others, some more distressing, but as such, i consider the introduction of RE7 particularly balanced and successful (but unfortunately not the rest, in my opinion).

I kept watching this horrified to see where Gaiden was going to be placed when it wasn’t in the bottom five, only to be relieved yet slightly disappointed it wasn’t included.

Not gonna lie, I think re2 remake is the scariest. Nothing worse than getting jumped in a hallway with 4 zombies, mr x, and a licker. Also the hostility and deadness of the environment is unmatched

That's a great point! RE2 remake has such a killer first half with the RPD... I think this single area in the game is the most tense area Capcom have crafted for the series yet.

I once beat Dead Aim in under 2 hours. I played it like 20 times and memorized the whole layout.

Rented it from blockbusters and beat it in 4 or 5 hours, single non-stop play session. I never bought it or went back to it but I enjoyed my time.

I would say top 1 and 2 are Re 7 and Revelations 2. Then it get less scary for my experience. Village has only 1 scary part really. But I don't know.

Im sad that you didnt rank Resident Evil The Deadly Silence, i get not including the directors cut as its not that much different but I feel the deadly silence was varied enough to mention a separate entry.

RE7 at one makes so much sense! I may be biased because it’s my favorite but it delivered everywhere I needed it to, it deserves the spot it got!

RE7 had the scariest opening out of all of them. After you get past the initial dinner scene though the game lost most of its scare factor for me cause nothing else compared to it. I’d say RE3 nemesis OG was the most I’ve been scared throughout the game. Although I was a kid playing it, now I’m an adult so probably has a lot to do with it. Nice video!

Yeah, RE7's opening was freaky AF! I agree that the OG RE3 nailed the tension with those Nemesis moments.

i not played ada dlc or seen it but why did they change her to get infected

I think to just give it so urgency. Her infection smartly sets up the confrontation with "IT", the cut boss from the original game.
