- Patrick and Chris break down the iconic (or ironic?) Metallica song that seems to be a fan favorite. Can they unravel the mystery of why people like it so much? Is it in fact the WORST Metallica song after all?

Thank you for watching and (hopefully) enjoying the video!
One is based off a book/movie called "Johnny got his Gun". When James read the book, the thought of being stuck in your own head terrified him. Glad you decided to revisit this song, I highly recommend reading the book or watching the movie as they are written and directed by the same person. Please do this type of video with other Metallica songs, these lyric/arrangement breakdowns will help you understand the structure of the song better in my opinion. Happy Holidays!

I can’t speak for anyone else but for me, I’m only 21 so I didn’t grow up with ...AJFA but I DID grow up with guitar hero and that game is a MASSIVE reason I love one. Every time I hear the intro, I’m immediately taken back to being a kid and playing my favorite guitar hero songs (Crazy Train, One, Raining Blood, etc.) but out of the bunch, one was more memorable for me. I hope you and the Chrises have a great Christmas 🤘🤘
You posted this on Christmas, you mad lad 🤣🤣🤣
Fitting to release this on Christmas with Chris looking like Rudolph 😂 Merry Christmas to all of you!
im not christian but merry christmas to you . To your health and wellbeing, Pat and Chris ! thanks for this treat
Well what a Christmas treat 😄
Merry Christmas Patrick 🤘👍
Hey Patrick, from Brazil I want to wish a Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and the Chrises. This channel is one of the best things I've found on YT in 2023, When I started watching your channel I realized I enjoy spending hours listening to music that I love being scrutinized by people who understant about music engineering way better than me (I understant some of the concepts, terminology and stuff but never studied it like you guys do). Keep up the good work and have fun in 2024 reacting to Garage Inc., S&M1 videos and the whole discographies from Pantrera, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Slipknot, Katatonia, Korn, Black Label Society, Slayer, Kreator, Helloween and all the other bands that I like (and even Sentenced/Poisonblack that I know you know). LOL I WISH
Brasil sil sil!
One is absolutely my fav song of all time. (My fav section is the super dense multi guitar part before the machine gun section- there is something like 4 different guitar parts going on at once). But I totally respect Patrick's opinion. It's interesting hearing a different take to what I'm used to.
31:45 The notiest note to ever note is the last note of the "Razor's Edge" guitar solo, in the Dream Theater song "Octavarium"
This is indisputable. Give it a listen Patrick.
He’s definitely going to hate that song
i heavily agree
Ocatavarium is just a final fantasy song
Merry Christmas!!
The 'hammer of justice' picture on the inlay card is pretty cool. It has the word fear written on the knuckles.
Hi Patrick, i would like to wish to you and both Chrises Merry Chistmas all the way from Czech Republic, i started watching you like month ago, and fall in love with your reactions to Metallica. But i think you guys would like my favourite band from Sweden - Royal Republic, and especially their newest album Club Majesty. They're mix of rock and pop, and i love it, plus it's not that long (35 minutes) and very funny to listen.
this a quote that explains the verse "now the world is gone i'm just one..."
"How could a man lose so much of himself and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because its a million to one shot. But yet if he does win you believe it because one in a million leaves one. If i'd read about a guy like me in the paper, I wouldn't believe it cos its a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves ONE. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds are a million to one, but a million to one always leaves one. ONE."
Also could be 'just one's i.e. I'm not special, just one of many. Let me die I'm just another number to add to the death toll.
Merry Christmas to all!
hey patrick, hope you had a great christmas!
just a note: in the ...and justice for all deluxe box, there's all songs with other mix which its better than the original, there's more high end from the guitars and low end from the bass and drum aren't as snappy. hope you hear it!!
its the one that says "work in progress rough mix"
Ooh can't wait to watch this.
Look, Patrick, you're halfway there. Just do a good live version of the song; do one of the S&M performances; and admit ”One" is the best so we can be done with this shit already. 😂
I guess I’m showing my age, because I’m used to possessing physical media and looking at the artwork. Chris saying he never saw the illustration of the band in a gavel surprised me because I’ve had the Justice album for over thirty years and that image takes me way back, especially since I have a tshirt with it on the back.
Patrick REALLY needs to see the video for “One”, seriously. He’d understand why some reactors cry when watching it.
I believe the song ONE was written by James, Lars and the guys prior to knowledge of the movie, Johnny Got His Gun (the 1971 movie that became a cult-classic, based on the book written in 1938). Keep in mind, Metallica did this music video 5 or so months after the release of AJFA - their 4th album and their first music video ever (thinking at the time they would never do music videos). Management came to Metallica and said - Hey, this song is very familiar to the movie ... they guys then watched the movie - bought the rights to it, then made the music video.
The song is editted/shortened for the music video (and audio wise for Rock radio air-play).
There is both a music video with the movie footage audio included, and a 'jammin' version' without movie footage.
In terms of similar song structures, I would say the song "Peruvian Skies" by Dream Theater follows that structure. It's probably one of their more "accessible" songs in general since it's pretty short in comparison to most of their discography. I doubt they'll like it, but I will always implore anyone to give their music a try.
'One' recording from S&M2 is probably my favourite ever.
A7x does have a song like that, it’s a song off of their 2010 album Nightmare called “Buried Alive”
Oh yeah I love the development in that song.
I don't know if it's true but the drum beat is SOS in moarse code or it's supposed to be like gun fire
@19:51 this is the only portion of the whole of AJFA where Het uses his 'live tone'. You can hear it amidst the orchestra of guitars, the grinding, flat, nasaly-tone. He dosent use that tone anywhere else on this album that i have heard or know of. Het's riffing is so tight through the thrashing finale, you can't even tell that there are 6 guitars overlayed through it. It just sounds like... One. Astonishing!
Structurally, 'One' is 'Sanitarium' all over again. But, by Lemmy... they didn't just hit it out of the park on this one. They hit it around the world.
Nice. :)
The cover at the end... Hmmm... Cool. :)
Another thing, the fast snare hits in the later part like right before the main solo, are meant to sound like machine gun fire. Short, heavy bursts. Just to kind of add to the mood of war in this song
you should listen to Garage Inc, cause it's the most interesting for you because it has the whole studio mixing experience from 1983 to 1998
This video is so old now. Same session as Some Kind of Monster edit
Speaking of songs similar to One, Beyond the realms of death by Judas Priest. What a journey.
Child In Time by Deep Purple has a similar structure or musical concept. But it repeats the whole thing with soft verses and aggressive interlude twice. And it's not thrash metal aggressive, obviously.
You should react to the official movie video, which was Metallica's first. :)
It's funny. I know a lot of people consider this their best song, but never heard anyone even slightly say this is their worst song. It showcases the best of both soft and harsh Metallica. I often get upset that songs like "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters" get way more air time and attention. I understand some of the hate this album gets for its mixing since I'm an audio engineer too and can't unhear some of the issues, but this song is just perfection in every way to me.
Metallica Seattle '89 live should be your first live reaction. This will show you what Metallica is all about! 🤘😎🤘
Avenged sevenfold has a song called “buried alive” which I think has a very similar structure and subject matter! Definitely worth checking out as a comparison!
I don't want to be a person who advices people to read the book, but; as a person who read "Johnny got his Gun", everytime I listen One, song brings all the feelings I felt while I was reading the book and it was an amazing/emotional antiwar book. Therefore it makes the song the greatest metallica song for me. Addition to that when you consider the amazing riff and solo in the song, it makes the song the greatest metallica song BY FAR imo.
@@slightlySuperior are u trolling?
You guys gotta listen to I disappear and Turn the Page. Maybe I little later on if you guys are tired of Metallica, but they are so good bro.
Next up, Buried Alive by A7X. Direct comparison to One. It’s structured almost identically
If you haven't already can you make a video about Metallica's single for M:I-2 called "I Disappear"
Yes we can!
@@PatrickMusilek awesome man! Thank you!
Watch the video. The first time it aired on MTV the VJ guy at the time was like, wow… that’s depressing….
Such a killer video
Floods by Pantera kinda has a similar structure
Glad to hear that One won 🙃
I cant say one is one of my favourites ever, i can think of 4 on justice alone i enjoy more, but it certainly is a great song, written and structured exeptionally for the subject matter
When you will react to garage inc??
Looks like you've lost some weight. Good job!
The intro was like… you’ve been captured by Metallica fans to appear in a hostage video.
Cant wait for yall to listen to some live metallica, their music is a complete different animal live compared to the studio albums.
We need justice reaction bro come on
Also you're looking great Patrick! Have you lost weight?
Yes, but not intentionally. Its part of my "sickness" which we are trying to figure out.
@PatrickMusilek Oh damn. I'm so sorry to hear bro. Sending love and positive vibes. ❤️
You need to watch the music video there’s much in there to answer some questions you had. Listen to what’s going on in the video and watch what’s happening.
You should do the Megadeth albums
Kick ass song at the end…
If he listened to AJFA with bass, i think he would’ve liked it much better. Jason made this album with his bass.
Why didn’t they just watch the video? 🧐
This needs to be a mustache only show
We need all Megadeth albums
Would you guys ever consider reviewing Dream Theater albums that would be amazing !!!!
Iron Man (Black Sabath) kinda has this structure ... ish
Red nose again =) Ruckinrull !
24:20 😵💫
I think welcome home is a better song lol
There's just some mainstream metal songs that have been so overplayed that they are forever ruined for me.. to list a few:
Metallica - One
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction
Megadeth - Peace Sells..
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
Judas Priest - Electric Eye
Ozzy - Crazy Train
Actually I could go on, alas..
I think it's not the worst by any means but it's certainly overrated/played. The lame bassless production of AJFA doesn't help matters.
When I listen to a song idc if it’s overplayed or played constantly it’s still an amazing song at the end of the day
@@pedroa.c7902 Sure it's a great song but for some reason it never stuck with me like Fade To Black, Welcome Home or The Day That Never Comes.
Awesome outro. If you’re into this kind of music, you should check ZETA
