      It's a good idea for a podcast, in theory (no pun intended), but I'm not a fan of hosts just reading Superchats for hours. I don't even listen to the EFAP Superchat catchup episodes.

      It’s not a show anymore. The people purchasing superchats are the creators at this point, and Mauler and Ryan make it happen.
      At least EFAP do superchats separately. Before that, they saved the superchats until after the media was done.

    I would like this podcast more if Theory was able to better explain why he enjoys something beyond the simple "it's cool/dope". Mauler and Ryan are just more nuanced with their arguments for good and bad and I feel like Theory is all surface level.

  • @JamesFodor
    @JamesFodor 2 місяці тому +37

    I'm surprised that Theory, someone who is so into Star Wars lore, does not appreciate how introducing non-force 'magic' substantially undermines the cosmology of the Star Wars universe, something that George always put great effort into. The Force is an energy field which permeates the galaxy and 'binds it together'. Living beings can interact with the force by learning to harness their midichlorians to perform feats that otherwise would not be possible. They can do this because they are harnessing the very field that underpins all of reality. It fits into a holistic account of the cosmology and metaphysics of the Star Wars universe. You cannot then just come along and arbitrarily throw in an entire new type of power which somehow exists alongside that. How does it work? How does it relate to the force? If it is force-based, how come Jedi or Sith never use it? It doesn't make sense because it has no place in the Star Wars cosmology established by Lucas. So why would Theory defend such nonsense? Because "its cool"? What a lame reason.

    It feels like Theory is more into the potential of Star Wars than anything else. If they introduce something new, he's going to approach it with a high level of optimism, which is admirable by itself. However, I think this approach leaves him partially blind to things that have the potential to be poor decisions within the SW universe from the get-go. That being said, I love his discussions with Mauler and Ryan. Hail Star Grift.

    TL;DR - Theory, with all sincerity, please wake up.
    I originally thought Star Grift was a good idea, and to a point I still do. However, it's becoming more difficult to listen to.
    Theory, I know you want to keep Star Wars alive and fun, but these standards you have are not good. I don't even think its healthy for your mental state.
    Please, stop accepting every idea with the name Star Wars slapped on it by Disney. You are free to fight to keep Star Wars alive, but this is not the way to do it.
    Theory, cant you see the more Disney adds, the more Star Wars loses its identity and the more it becomes sludge? Eventually, you cannot call it Star Wars anymore. All that is left is a husk of a dead name.
    Its like having a sandbox at a playground that was great to play in. Then, a new HOA leader arrives with new members/staff. He starts throwing cheap junk toys into the sandbox. After that, the person permits nontrained toddlers to do what they want in the sandbox. Eventually, the sand is replaced with a gross mix of fecal matter, piss, clay, and mud with a little mix of cat litter and sand. The only good thing about it is the faint febreeze smell.
    The sandbox is no longer a sandbox. You can no longer make fun castles nor trenches. Even if you try, it looks awful.
    There are only three good options; a) clean out the sandbox (which will need to be done frequently), b) remove the HOA leader and staff or c) build or find a better sandbox.

If we were to cut out all of the padding such as the pointless pauses, staring, walking, lingering shots, and fights that had no consequences, that show wouldn't have enough content to fill even half of a movie. In Ahsoka, so little information is conveyed that you can only barely figure out who people are, and such significant character contradictions are made (i.e. Ahsoka and Ezra not caring that Sabine betrayed THE GALAXY to find Ezra) that what little we get is entirely inconsequential.
      The fact is that Theory simply doesn't appreciate good storytelling for what it is. He's an idiot who is perfectly happy for anything to happen as long as he sees the colors and hears the sounds that he likes.

They flee to the natives of the planet who are resisting the baddies; these natives have been implanted with a fake Messiah myth for thousands of years. Purpose of this fake Messiah myth is so that the witch order can weaponize it with a man of their choosing to go against the Empire when the time is right; Paul is one of many royal sons raised to be applicable to this myth should the order choose him in his lifetime.
      Paul's mom saving him and getting him to the natives goes off-script from what the witch order wanted, and his mom uses their own propaganda against them to make her son this mythical chosen one defended by a fanatical army who've resisted imperial firepower their whole lives.
      The actual story here is that Paul has been taught in his mother's witching ways and is gifted in foresight, and being on the planet that produces psychoactive mind-amplifying chemicals makes him one of the most prescient people currently living.
      While his mom wants him to be powerful so he can protect himself, and wants to avenge his father and help the native people; the more powerful he gets both socially and psychically, the more he realizes he'll need to overthrow the entire Empire, but doing so well start an unstoppable religious jihad that will spread his gospel whether he likes it or not to every planet in the imperium.
      Throughout the story he tries to temper this and make small changes to the future, but he realizes being more powerful doesn't make him able to change the will of this murder-mob he's cultivated; it just makes him more aware of the things he can't change.

    I like to think of The Force as a more scientific understanding of mana in the Star Wars universe. That said, it seems ridiculous that only the Jedi (and eventually the Sith) would find a way to tap into it when it makes perfect sense that this power has been harnessed in a variety of ways over the centuries. Neither the Jedi nor Sith have a monopoly over it, after all, and it could be argued that even they have a limited grasp of its potential. Granted, their ancestors were far more knowledgeable about its nature, and what has been passed down through their respective orders is a fractured understanding of it at best. (Much like how the Jedi, shortly before the fall of the Republic, lost the knowledge of true Force healing and so on.)
    Not that I care about Filoni's 'Night Sisters'. They're his unimaginative way to shoehorn in witchcraft/paganism into SW because his wife is a follower. He never cared about their original lore.

  • @terrasur4168
    @terrasur4168 2 місяці тому +22

    On Dune Part 2, a few points I'd push back on with the discussion here is that the film makes it very clear that the Bene Gesserit are in control, the Reverend Mother basically tells Irulan, "Yeah, I'm overthrowing your father, and yes I created the scenario which leads to his downfall. Your point being?" The Emperor in Dune is more like the Holy Roman Emperor in a sense and not the tyrannical absolutist of Star Wars, which spoiler alert comes later in the series to a whole other level of control, which becomes the point Herbert was trying to make. It's important to keep in mind that this came before Star Wars and inspired it and GOT in a way, though it leans closer to GOT in it's nature than SW more often than not being a more grounded political thriller with Sci Fi trappings.
    Another thing to note and I find strange is MauLer's connection to Rabban (maybe because it's Batista?) The character isn't really a character in the book or the movie, just a brutal enforcer for the Baron who get's whacked offscreen to make way for Feyd, they expanded and gave the character more screentime in the movie maybe to his detriment, I would have killed him when he was fleeing in the ornithopter even more bluntly than his actual death scene. The Harkonnen's won, they beat Atreides, that is also made very clear in the film. The Baron already played the long game and sort of sit's back and readies another against the Emperor, which is why Paul's realization that he is a Harkonnen so important, he abandons his Atreides mentality and embraces Muad'dib fully to use it as a Harkonnen would. He blindsides the other players and sweeps the board before they have their pieces set, this movie was the wrap up, the falling action in a sense. It's odd, but I view it more like the LOTR extended films, it needs to be watched back to back with the first and likely edited together so there are no credits between them for the complete experience.
    Connecting with Paul is difficult, because on some level it's supposed to be, sort of like Napoleon he is treated as a historical figure. He is remarkably human despite his god like power, which in turn makes him all the more tragic and terrifying because you are aware of it but most other's are not and the consequences are beyond dire though perhaps ultimately necessary in the grander narrative of the series. That's why I liked Chani's changes in the movie, and I know I'm in the minority on this point, but it sold the relationship that he was so vulnerable and open with her that she knew what he was and what he was afraid of becoming and was protective of him and trying to save him from himself only to fail.

      I agree, the Bene Gesserit are always in control. That’s why they have never actually “taken” any side during the war, it is all their doing to have the kwisatz haderach for control and bend the world to their will in an instant, rather than spending years in planning and execution. Also, yes the reveal of Paul’s heritage made it clearer that using the muad'dib persona will be their only way of survival, because that’s how the Harkonen’s have survived. However, to be honest I have seen the channel to knit pick on things which they don’t like and be generous to films which they do.

      Quite well put sir. i concur with many statements. Antihero and very dark turn of Paul was holly s***t they really went all jihad onto them. It was quite fast turn but after high DMT resurrection i can see that turn to be fully justified. Essentially i really cant see Paul as different from Harkoneens IMO. Although i can see dialogue could be expanded much more. But that is not Denis style and he fully embraced that. I m sucker for visual "show dont tell" and music background mood setting shots. Denis really can elevate otherwise quite reckless script into something too behold. Visual and music and folly design was 10/10. Plot was solid 6/10. Fair final assessment for movie is EZ 8/10.

    My take on Villeneuve’s Dune is that, as a big fan of the book (and the board game) is that I do really like his Dune movies but they’re not a good replacement at all for the book. It’s very much a “Dune lite”, the broad strokes are there but the essence has been heavily muted. I expect to rewatch and enjoy these films for a long time but there’s still a lot that could have been done better, and I’m a bit disappointed that I don’t think it will be done better - this is probably going to be considered the “definitive” adaptation for the foreseeable future. People are going to be scared to try again, much like how people will be scared to try Lord of the Rings again after Jackson’s trilogy, but Villeneuve’s Dune is not nearly as strong as Jackson’s LotR (to be fair, much as I adore Dune I’m not sure I’d put it at the level of Tolkien’s LotR either).

    Just because the percentage is high does not mean that (a) a lot of people watched it, (b) that the Star Wars fanbase all watched and enjoyed it, or (c) that it was a well-written show. From what I remember, Ahsoka had fewer numbers than Andor, and very few people watched Andor as it came out. So a tiny portion of fans watched it and drooled over it; yippee, Star Wars is saved…

    This is one of the reasons I love mauler. He’s the only one saying what I’m thinking about dune 2. The more I think about how much they wasted the characters the less I like it. Raban and the baron and the emperor were all wasted potential. Gurney was just thrown in like an afterthought. They brush past way too many important things like the atomics so they can have ANOTHER scene of Paul having vague visions.

    • @terrasur4168
      @terrasur4168 2 місяці тому +4

      Rabban was never a character even in the first film, even less in the book, I'm not sure what else they could have done other than kill him sooner. The Baron already won against the Atreides, he accomplished his lifelong goal and is moving on to a grander stage by using the Emperor's weakness against him and starting a civil war, he is disconnected from Arrakis in favor of planning his new scheme, we got enough to understand that in his talk with Feyd in the bathtub. He is reactive more than active in this section of the story because he is dealing with unknowns and later an enemy that can predict and counter his every move. The atomics were only ever a plot device and that's all they could be, they offered an explanation for why the Great Houses didn't just sweep down and take on Paul in his fledgling ascension because he threatened to essentially start a galactic dark age if they did. The visions are vital to the story, everything Paul does after the water of life is in the context of the visions of the future.

      One of Villeneuve's problems is his casting. He always picks A-listers coming off of recent hits, which makes their bargaining position strong so they can ask for $20 million or more per actor. He then directs them into delivering dreary, minimalist characters with little subtext to their dialog, so whatever skill and charisma they have as actors doesn't show up on screen. I don't like Zendaya generally, but she was playing the role as directed.
      Ask yourself this diagnostic question, "Could this role be played by Rich Evans?" Because people like Rich Evans can do the job Villeneuve wants, but at less than $1 million.

While I am not much of a Manga person, usually just stick to anime's, I have seen enough of Akria manga work through various videos and me just taking a look at them myself to know how talented this man at drawing Manga panels. His legacy has been immense on the Manga/Anime world. He created the template that literally every shonen story running today can be traced back to. Even people who have never watched Dragonball or DBZ or even anime in general know what a Super Saiyan is.
